hi guys! Happy New Year and stuff. I haven't been on much as this has been a crazy last 6 months on this end. I have gotten a few things here and there as usual. but I wanted to share what I found. My good friend is buying houses to rent out and become a slumlord. The newest home he bought had a big added on shop FULL. The man that lived there was a machinist and ran a small shop at his home. The seller asked if he would like to buy the contents of the shop as well for an extra 2k. He agreed then called me to come help with the cleanout and sorting. So this is what he has after 3 weeks of hauling **** off. 18 loads to the dump and 1 huge roll away thrown out. It's all going up for sale in a month or so. Of course, I have found a ton of neat stuff in there! Atlas Lathe, cheap Mill but TONS of Tooling EVERYwhere. Tool grinder, band saw, 2 full Kennedy boxes. Full Hout Box and about 6 or 7 files..... Im gonna have a hard time trying to decide what to buy....

What kind of stuff did you guys throw away? I got a lot of grief here for doing that in a basement cleanout last year.

I don't remember that. I've never understood it, either. "One man's trash is another man's treasure" goes BOTH WAYS. The whole point of picking is being picky. I'm not altruistically out to save everything that's old, just the stuff I value or that I know others value. But everyone can't know the value of everything, so of course a lot of stuff gets scrapped. And sometimes even when I know something is valuable - a big vise, a machine, etc, I will often leave them behind simply because it's too much hassle to transport and flip. I've never looked through anyone else's pile and said, "Oh, you missed that." No, he didn't miss it. YOU missed it by not being there. HE didn't want it. That's the way I look at it, anyway.

Strange trip to the flea market (Lugz 2021_13) this morning. The tables were still full of snow (we had 10" to 12" a few days ago...), as were the walking lanes. So people were set up in their trunks (like Boot Sales in England) or little card tables or right on the macadam in the parking lot. That caused some shouting matches between buyers browsing from their barely idling cars, buyers looking to park, sellers looking to find a place to park, etc. When things calmed down I managed to enjoy myself and come home with a few wrenches.

No idea on the "K.G. Co" tank wrench at the top. The Nickel-Moly DBE wrench under that is an unmarked BHM. That early pressed steel type DOE with the 22-1/2* angle under the orphan adaptor (1/2" male hex to 1/2" female square drive) is also a BHM wrench, marked with the monograph. I am used to seeing those as Wakefields. I was surprised to find a MADE IN ENGLAND stamp on the rusty implement wrench at the bottom, which is the only reason I bought it. Can't make out the logo. Above that is the pick of the litter. A VISE WRENCH NO. 1. I have a No. 2 already. It's for a swivel base nut. Charles Parker.

Speaking of trash, treasure, and another man's gold, I hit an estate sale that was packed to the gills with... well, much of what I thought was trash, some of what I thought was treasure, and a lot that other people were going nuts for. A warren of little rooms, all stuffed with vintage radios and radio parts, books by the thousands (Woo-Hoo, kinda) some tools in a little work shop area, and so on. It looked like there was vintage camping gear, reloading equipment, vinyl, and I do not know what else. Here is what I picked up for a few bucks:

Snap-on 5/8's combo from '51, unmarked perfect handle, misc sockets including Mossberg Blackhawk and early P&C, and a nearly complete '30ish Indestro socket set.


Missing only the 9/16" socket, the ratchet, and a short drive coupler. I am pretty sure I have all of that here at the house. But I could not pass up a decal that nice! Also:

A 4'x6' topo map of the Portland metro region from 1982, showing all counties and cities, along with a lovely copy of a book by chess master Richard Reti, considered to the founder of the hypermodern style of play. Also, a master of multi-game, blindfolded play, once winning 21 of 29 simultaneous matches. He died in 1929, leaving lasting contributions to the game. $28 for everything.

I made a couple more stops at interesting sales, picking up:

an SK roto ratchet and an unused heavy duty work belt for $10 at one stop and


a nice working Simpson 260 for a song after I showed them the tambor was missing - $6

We had 2-3 times that. I haven’t been out. Didn’t help that I messed up my lower back installing a new dishwasher (that’s what I’m blaming - don’t suggest otherwise to MrsLS) just before the snow hit.

Nice looking Indestro 1536 set! Both paint and decal are much better than mine I found late last year from the late '20s-early '30s (with some generous contributions from Lugz and Don). Mine has 4pt sockets vs. your 8pts. I'm still missing the 19/32 6pt.

Meanwhile, I broke my dry spell yesterday with an hour drive west of S.A.

The big find was a partial set of Truth 1/2" sockets and speeder. Sockets are 1-1/4, 1, 15/16, 13/16, 3/4, 11/16, 9/16, & 7/16. Speeder is R8.

The Craftsman group has a BE 1/4 hinge handle with =v= sliding T, Ratchet, universal and 5/16 hex. 3/8"drive =v= 1/2" swivel, 13/16 & 9/16. 1/2"drive =v= 7/16 hex.

2s & 3s of Snap-on, S-K and Thorsen

Orphans are a NB deep 25/32, Plomb P.W.A. universal, Blackhawk 1/2, Walden W. 1/2 and an Indestro Super 7/16.

Rounding things out are a Stanley 117 Awl and a Proto L.A. 818 Pipe wrench (for tin medic)

BMW, what's a "tambor" for that meter?

Lugz, I was cleaning out my parents' basement (which was previously my grandparents' basement and still had a bunch of their stuff in it). One of the items I kept was a large metal multi-drawer organizer, full of all kinds of junk. When I mentioned that last part, lots of folks' radar went off here, asking for pics of the contents, etc. It was truly old junk, I doubt any of it was worth the postage to ship it to anyone.

But, I do know where I've inherited this horrible habit of never throwing the extra pieces away (like when you buy a generic plumbing repair kit, install what you need, but can't let go of the other bits that are made for some other model of toilet, etc.)...

Garage Sales and in person Estate Sales are out of season here right now.

I did find a Kennedy MC22 riser on FBMP for $60.00. I have 2 Kennedy's and 1 brown Craftsman machinist chest, any of which will fit on it. I just need to shuffle things around in my work area to find it a permanent home.

I cleaned and siliconed the slides and it opens beautifully now. It "stuck" when opening originally.

I think I paid more money for this riser than any of my other "krinkles". I buy things cheaply when I can find them.

Definitely a tank wrench of some kind. Has some style to it. The ID has so far eluded me. This MADE IN ENGLAND multi-wrench is just as elusive. What a rabbit hole these things are! Even the ebay listings can't determine who made these.

The "Musselman Universal Bicycle Wrench" is a close fit too (different bolt/nut holes).

Thanks, guy. Good leads, especially knowing the number is "1322" not "1722." I just looked through DATAMP and also Wrenching News. No dice. I did gather a bunch of potential maker's names on eBay. But I'm not going to kill myself on this one, either. Seeing how common they are makes me lose interest fast.

Never knew that, thanks. I honestly can't believe that any meter ever came with such a thing, that's really cool!

How accurate would a really old meter actually be? Does age and oxidation of the internal wiring and components negatively affect them?

Simson 260 meters were the gold standard before Fluke came along in the seventies, and being a series 7 this is one of the later models. This is, as they say, dead nuts accurate. As far as age and oxidation go, all of the internal components are subject to the same deterioration that any older electronic device has; diodes and resisters break down over time, any extra oxidation or corrosion on a wire places additional resistance on it and that can degrade the performance over time, certainly. And the same thing can happen to my beloved Fluke. This is why we calibrate our meters and check them for function on known voltages and resistances regularly.

Here is my pickup, from a street corner down the street, just after the rain decided that Pelting was a good number for the next 15 minutes. Left behind a 2’ square, 6 ft tall, probably home made plywood beauty , just could think of a space for it. And I didn’t think I could get it in the truck easily with these two. 16” deep, 18” wide, about 2 feet tall each. They were steamed with the cabinet in the bottom, which looked a bit odd.

Think I will put a wood base down, then the drawers, then the cabinet, see if I like it. Easily reversed until they are full. These will go into a void between to rolling cabinets, maybe they’ll get wheels too. Guess it depends on how I can fasten them together.

Need to bang out a few drill blowouts, bent pulls, etc

It’s odd that the label is on the outside of your box and mine is on the inside.

I hit the local flea market during their setup today. I only bought from two booths, but it was worth the trip.

The first item was the Woodbury & Company catalog at the top of the photo. It has a copyright date of "1950, 1951" as shown in the second photo. It is full of interesting information, including listings for many interesting tools. I'll be posting several items on the Proto Picture thread.

The Craig’s list posting said old tool garage sale. When they opened the garage door I was there to great them good morning. Had the place to myself for a good half hour. Got some Snap-on 1/2dr SAE’s in chrome & impact and some 3/8dr SAE’s. SK 3/8dr metrics and really nice SK 1/4dr socket set. A Blue Point puller, Snap-on bearing collar & press and a huge SK adj wrench.... and some Craftsman Pro DBO wrenches in metric and SAE.

Not a great weekend to find stuff this weekend, but did manage a couple scores. A buddy of mine cleans out barns for a living and had some tools he had found in his last clean up. Deals mostly in old signs, cans, and antiques. Went through an old tool box and saved the following for free! Metal battery terminal cleaner, 1/4” craftsman extension, indestro 1/4” drive 5/16” socket, indestro 3/8” drive 9/16” socket, Kraueter 3/8” drive 9/16” socket, SK 3/8” drive 11/16” deep socket, and a bit drive. While not garage sale finds, I went to the Hardware Exchange in Delaware, Ohio and picked up the last enderes 2 in 1 stubby that the had, and while in Ace picking up a replacement hammer handle, I found the Stanley Lever Lock on sale for $4.99.

Starting with my yard sale finds from the weekend. I saw a yard sale sign and stopped. A couple women were clearing out their mom’s estate. Stuff in the driveway, more in the house. Nothing great, costume jewelry and household. One small box of broken and beat tools. I asked about the garage as it was open, and they let me look, but one sister admitted they already removed anything good.

There was a Western Flyer bicycle in rough shape. The woman said it was a $2000 bike and she would take my number. I figure maybe a $50-$100 bike.

With that I left with Garfield and Gator Grip for 2 bucks. I always liked Garfield. The can is dated 1978 with an old Toys R Us sticker on the bottom.

The flea market today, found a few small items, and also went to battle negotiating with two of the toughest vendors to buy from.

Here’s a teaser pic of my big purchase still in the bag.

It was a tense negotiation. The seller was packing early, the weather whipping up, and I was even slapped in the head a few times by a fluttering tarp. In order to get this at a price I was willing to pay, I thought to try bundling it into a larger deal with some new Snap On he showed me. That was my best chance and I came out alright in the end! Probably going to offer the SO up for sale.

The Snap On mug was free from a box of freebies another vendor had. I took a couple tool and hardware items and passed them on to a favorite vendor of mine who threw me a freebie tool earlier.

The other negotiation was for this kit.

Had to do some tough negotiating with the seller and his wife. His prices make it very difficult to buy from him.

A nice leather zipper case. Sort of a hodgepodge of tools. Maybe it was an electrical set at one point? A couple Utica pliers in there, Jensen and Vaco drivers, Armstrong and Bonney wrenches. Looks partly cobbled together though.

I was really after the item in the top right pocket. I don’t think they had a clue it was a Snap On, they seemed fixated on the case making it a valuable set.

Nice little stubby magnetic driver, like brand new.

Thought you are a bit of a bike guy, wish i had a picture. The bell was solid rust, the seat was i don’t know what. I wasn’t interested in it but just curious. Sometimes it does hurt to ask!

Don’s answer to Outlaw is right about that “storage” being empty: there are several new and used sets on eBay, and none have anything in there. But it does leave room for speculation - storage for what? Another extension or a shortie driver, maybe?
I have a few of those Bonney spark plug sockets, but the ones in that Champion kit are fantastic!

MrsLS & I had planned to hit some antique stores today, but an additional 3” of snow dissuaded us. So, given the dry air in the house, I spent some time rehafting three hammer heads that have been sitting around. Then the Tom Brady show.

The talk about bikes reminded my of the 1950s Schwinn with 3-speed hub my dad had. I guess it was a Traveler. It survived from his teens to mine, but I cannot recall what became of it. I was cured of bicycle passion while collaborating with a guy who had access to a warehouse that was being used to store hundreds (seemed like thousands - maybe it was) of used and donated-new ones. The sheer mass of it simply dried up my desire. At one point before the cure was complete I had two tandems and a number of others.

I love these SK sets. I have all of them (1/4, 3/8, 1/2"). That 1/4" set is about $300 new I believe. Also, I'm pretty sure the thumbwheel adapter will fit in that spot.

Sunday at the local Flea Market turned out to be pretty good! Because of the pandemic and a problem with the main building at the venue, there was a much smaller turnout of vendors. A smaller, unheated building was in use, and it was dimly lit. I ended up going back to my truck and getting a flashlight! I only spent $30, so it wasn't too bad.

Almost all of my finds were from one vendor who had done a house cleanout. He said that the garage had been packed with older tools. I got the impression that the best stuff had already been taken before he came to the Flea.
