It is very odd in the P&C front. I would be curious the timeline of events. If Eagle's patent was applied for after the other manufactures started making the design. The other manufactures could have invalidated Eagle's patent based on prior art. Maybe they thought P&C was naive to the prior art?

Eagle could have obtained a patent on the concept as the USPTO doesn't check for prior art outside their office (or at least now a days it is that way).
Hi Roy, Mr. Patentee Hisself! :)

Mr. Eagle was first. He patented (1,380,643) what we all think of as a flex or hinge handle (or, more colloquially, and much more limitingly to its purpose, a "breaker bar") with the drive stud pinned in between a forked shank in 1921. Plomb and others started making them like that later in the 20's. Others, including P&C, and apparently TRUTH, perhaps respecting the patent, perhaps completely ignorant of it, made them with the drive stud forked around a straight end shank. Eagle sued P&C in 1935 when they started making what they called the "Inside" version (Eagle patent, how they're all made today...) as an alternative option to their first "Outside" version. He lost. I have never read the litigation, but the summaries sound to me like technicalities. In other words, my impression is the poor guy got burned.

I have a williams 5/16" hex male drive beaker bar and 5/16" hex drive female socket. I have not seen any others before.
Williams got the idea from Husky. In fact, they partnered with Husky to launch into the midget line (radio, ignition, etc) business.

Lugz, I too have a fondness for the push drills with bit storage in the handle, but only for a specific one from Sears from my youth. My dad lost it years ago and blames me to this day of taking and keeping it when I moved out 30+ years ago. I really don't believe I did that, and have never seen it since, so I don't know what he's talking about.

I keep thinking I should buy one and give it to him, but then he'd just tell me he was right all these years... not that I have to be "right" but I don't want to perpetuate his notion that I was a thief!!!

Mike

I have that same push drill, as well as several Stanley#41s . I bought the Craftsman new in 1986 as a required tool in my Carpentry Apprenticeship School, each 6-8 week class we were given a list of tools required. That push drill was used, along with a brace and expansion bit to install locks and door hardware. My "door " was an 1-3/4" thick x 6 inch x 24 inch slab of poplar, held in a bench vise.

Thanks for the timeline.
That's a bummer for eagle. I know verbage in claims is super important. Being hit on a couple technicalities would be rough in this case. 1 word can make or break an infringement case. It pays to have a good patent attorney. I have luckily never had to go to litigation but have had the experience being on both side of a cease and desist.

Mrs No_Garage and I went Antiquing today in PA. We saw some cool stuff and I picked up something for myself.

I picked up a 5 drawer Steelmaster cabinet for $20. After a quick cleaning of the exterior it's really nice. I haven't done the faces of the drawers yet . . .

I also saw this interesting adjustable wrench. The movable jaw is held in place by a pivoting arm with jaws. I didn't check the picture so make sure the manufacturer's name was legible :lol_hitti

You pull the curved end back against the spring at the bottom and it releases the dynamic jaw to move. It seems that pressure on the jaw would move the dynamic jaw, which isn't that good a design.

Cheers

Jim

Finally putting some points up on the board. Had a guy I meet this summer at rummage sale mentioning that they are cleaning out his father's estate and he had some tools if I wanted to come look. Who could say no with no fleas or auctions going on.
With just over $100 here is what I picked up.
1. Bonney Fridge set that looks mint. Even has the cross bar. Decal is amazing for the age.
Curved buffalo queen 4"er has to be cleaned.
Krauter button pliers
Snap On Tee
2. Close ups
3. Old SK box with Snap On, SK, and various others
4 & 5. Close upsIMG_20210208_194305591.jpegIMG_20210208_194309725.jpegIMG_20210208_194339086.jpegIMG_20210208_194355836.jpgIMG_20210208_194359714.jpeg

I hit a couple estate sales today when I had some time early this afternoon:

First one was the most interesting, stuff everywhere but I couldn't find much in the way of tools at first, which was odd considering the number of old hot rod magazines that were there, I am guessing the family took most of it. But I did find a pile of older stuff in the attic, which you can see above. A complete set of SPARTA metrics, misc. D-I, Plomb, Walden, and P&C 3/8 sockets, along with some 1/2. Also an early P&C drag link socket! A little leather pouch containing hex keys, two ratchets (SK and International Forge-MDF), a geometric C Craftsman driver, a ChromeXQuality breaker bar (male ends at both ends), and a cute little Truth breaker bar, which much to my curiosity is 5/16 drive. Double checked it just to be sure, as I have never come across that before. $8 for everything.

I think I am going to hit that first sale again tomorrow AM.

Dont know if you are aware but that International Forge ratchet is the less common version of the Craftsman version made by Miller Drop Forge

For me, it's been "too much other stuff going on". I'm putting heat in my high-bay garage and spent the weekend putting a ceiling up 14-feet above the floor. I tell ya, having to move a car out into the cold weather so that you can cram all the movable **** from the other garage into that now empty garage bay is a powerful appetite control. In fact, it reminds me of how much I need to sell or otherwise move along.a516c915d46ca47464c8436be7a1c647.jpg751827b57c970a724396e00c8f1f08bb.jpgc46b8a39203b9cca990be2283793ae2c.jpg

Wow, nice setup. Looks like you need a lift to get the panels onto the lift!

I'm not finishing my walls or ceiling, but have been in a longer-than-planned garage reorganization project myself.

It's starting to look like it is going to be extremely cold in many parts of the United States and Canada over the next few days, with some serious power production issues.

Everyone, please stay safe, don't do anything foolish, and take care of the ones you love.

I picked up these solar panels, inverter, batteries and misc wiring at the end of December but didn't get them set up untill mid January. I charge all my cordless batteries with it, I even switched out my mower, line trimmer and blower over to rechargeable batteries. This is the temporary set up untill I can get the batteries under the bench and panels up on the roof.

Warm CA thoughts to all those out there needing them at the moment.PXL_20210216_162519568.jpgPXL_20210216_162529789.jpg

Nabbed this staple puller from a dumpster at the end of January. The jaw was frozen, but a little oil and persuasion has gotten it moving freely again. Handle was repaired in the past but appears to be perfectly functional.

Warm Cali thoughts to all you out there in colder than ice weather.PXL_20210216_162334718.jpgPXL_20210216_162318698.jpgPXL_20210216_162323281.jpg

Grabbed a disassembled engine hoist minus the ram from the curb two weeks ago. Also got 3 more mowers to fix and pass to new homes that week. Picked up a ram at the local scrap yard for $10 last week. I just need to clean it up and throw some new seals and oil in it and it should be perfect for the hoist. Flipping mowers keeps them out of the landfill and gives me a bit of spending money for more tools!

Sending 'cold' california weather (51f right now) to all those out there needing a bit of warmth. Stay safe!PXL_20210216_161939386.jpgPXL_20210216_162019869.jpegPXL_20210216_162044324.jpg

On Friday, finally managed to meet up with a guy I had been messaging. Picked up a ton of stuff (8+ boxes) along with a Kennedy 527 a 2-drawer mid box and a 520, all full of stuff (mostly Starrett, a few Mitutoyo, B&S, and a few China).

Pictured below is just the endmills(120+) and lathe tooling. Overall walked away for 435, and have already sold $120 worth to make my money back off of extras. Expect to see some stuff hitting classifieds soon.IMG_20210207_162145_01.jpegIMG_20210207_162159_01.jpegIMG_20210207_162147_01.jpeg

Cruz, that's a nice haul on the mills & bits alone .Check scrap prices on carbide, may be less hassle than piecemeal insert sales to someone with the right toolholder

Mostly rained out this weekend but did find one covered table at a local flea with a few items worth rescuing. Got most of a 1/2 drive set of SK Waynes, a 7/16 placeholder, a Williams 1/2 female to 3/4 male adapter, and my first pebble!

Seller wanted $3 per socket and $10 for large wrenches, gave a total of $40... hemmed and hawed a bit while I stood there looking speechless. She said “naw, how about $28?” (Weird, random number). I offered $15 and she took it before I’d finished speaking... guess she was getting cold!

Not a steal but I’ll take it.

Picked up this 8” Columbian 508 for $150. The end of the screw is bad and the vise is frozen but I bought it anyway.

bagged!
“The end of the screw is bad...frozen”...that’s IT? Heck, the slide isn’t even split.
$150 for an 8” vise is a “you ****!” in my book.

Very nice vise! Can the screw be cleaned up (to keep it original), or does it need to be replaced?

Yes, bagged, that is a ****!

The stuck slide isn't that big a deal. Here is a link to the Vise Repair thread where I unstuck a Reed 305-1/2. It starts on post #5343.

I had trouble getting your link to work, so am trying to provide another way for folks to get there.

The big question: is the nut in good shape? That is a hard part to make. The screw can be made on a lathe.

I had a look at it today and it looks good. I have someone to cast me a new nut for a good price if it needs one as well. And if I didn’t find someone, I would just change the thread to a standard pitch acme thread and weld up a new nut using an acme thread coupling.

Thanks. I’ll check it out. I’ve unstuck many vises using electrolysis but this thing is twice the size of anything I’ve restored that was this rusted.

Gotcha. Looks pretty pitted in your pic, wasn't sure if that would affect the operation.

Pawn shops today and the Restore on the hammer.

Heller #2 $3
Williams BTW-1RC and S-53 $30

No steals but I really wanted that S-53, most of them I have seen have been trashed and this one is very nice. Does any one have any experience with the Williams torque wrench. Its an inch pounds 3/8 and I cannot find info on the web. Dont know if its a keeper or not.
