A Tale of Two Boxes, Decisions, and Choices
On Saturday, I had some errands to run, along with meeting an old friend for beers in the afternoon. So, I checked if there were any interesting sales in the area I would be in, and it looked like a couple filled the bill. So, off I went.

The first was the home of someone with varied interests, and it looked like some interesting tools and radio stuff. Well, the radio bits were priced higher than I would like, and it looked like the tools had been gone over pretty heavily before I got there, along with a roller cabinet marked NFS. But I managed to pick up some interesting things:

A 60's vintage Craftsman pruning saw, some Kroil and cutting fluid, a chart of decimal equivalents, an early Yankee push drill (forgot that for the pic), and a Barcalo wrench roll. I will always pick up a decent one of those!

After that, I headed out to the other sale, which was described as a "gentleman farmer." Should be good! Well, it wasn't that great. But as I walked back to the tool shed, something caught my eye. Is that a P&C logo on that old toolbox? Why, yes it is! And so I rushed over to it, admiring the logo the whole while. Well, the box was a little beat up, and a little pricy! But, it was mine now, and it should be worthy of a restoration.

But, next to it was another old box, one I had seen before, but I couldn't place it. And it was priced a little higher. So, I looked it over as best I could in the half-light of the shed, not seeing any identifying marks. Looking back at the P&C box, I pull out the half-dozen bits of distributor guts, old magnets, and other heavy detritus, and ask the fellow working the outer section of the sale to hold it for me, while I look around. I immediately head over to that other box to look at it one more time. It has a front drop-down panel, two drawers with metal loop handles, a carry tray, and a hipped roof. But I still cannot make out a logo. And it is missing a carry handle on the top. Well, I don't walk too well, use a cane as a matter of fact, so I left that one on the ground where it was resting.

Now, I don't carry that much cash on me, as it forces me to stay on a budget. So, I had enough money on me to pick up just one, and I chose the P&C. I paid, took the long walk back to my truck, and I headed out to meet my friend.

But I got to thinking about it on the drive and took a good hard look at it while waiting for Doug to show up.

That is a pretty beat-up box. No carry tray, the handle and latches are pretty rusty, as well as the corner pieces, and the hasp won't move. What was I thinking? This is starting to look worse and worse. And I started thinking more and more about that other box. So, when I got home that night, I started doing some research in earnest. And I realized what I passed up.

Rick Higgins and I both have NOS complete versions of the set that came in the Barcalo roll. The mystery box looks like my wartime S-K carry box.

I thought about that box all night. It didn't keep me awake, but it was in my head as I went to sleep, and on my mind when I woke up. I looked at what time the sale opened today, and I tried to put it out of my mind. Someone would have seen that box, known what it was, and paid the amount asked. There was no chance it would be there the next day. So I tried not to think about it. But, what if it was there? I couldn't let it go that easy. It isn't too far to the sale.

And so I went back to the sale.

It was still there! And it was now half-price to boot.

So, I paid the ten dollars, pulled my truck in close, and loaded up. Because when I gave a super close look in exactly the right area, I found the logo, heavily obscured by dirt, rust, and a shoddy repaint.

A mid-thirties Snap-on K21. It has some surface rust, has been repainted at least once, but it is pretty solid and it should clean up well. I got lucky, at least in my eyes. Now, I am going to need to do a full restoration on it. And find a leather handle.

Haha! BMW, that so SO close to how I got my K-21! Less the second day comeback.

Estate sale; the box was full of old tools; I wasn't sure I wanted another project, but I managed to spot the SO and reality sank in. At that I had to haggle hard to get it, and did well enough that the box was essentially "free", as the cost was easily absorbed by the tools I got!

Great story, and glad you got lucky and picked it up on day two!

Last descent into my buddy’s father’s cavern of wonders, before the cleanout crew empties the place. This is all stuff I refused before, thinking it might sell.
Came away with two bucking saws, a Littlestown wood vise, a Luther clamp-on hand-crank grinder missing several important parts, two pick heads, a Fairmount adjustable square hermaphrodite plug wrench(?). Craftsman underline jigsaw, a possibly-deceased Dunlap 1/3hp 1750rpm motor. A bucket of sundries including a P&C 2232E round beam double box and a Gardner 41W624 shorty double box end, a Bell System electrical screwdriver, a KD oil filter wrench, a Williams 1/4 inch M106 spinner. Innumerable aluminum nails, scrapers. Original operating instructions for the jigsaw and long-gone legset. A Black & Decker drill kit instructions, drill including a circular saw attachment. A “Wise” ratcheting screwdriver kit, missing most of the sockets. 1x24x40“ slab of oak butcher block for a project. And a small Crockpot I forgot to photograph.

I stopped at the Restore Friday and found a few interesting pieces.

I like to visit the Restore but never find tools there. I wasn't going to post this find but it was unusual. They had a bunch of brand new work wear, shirts and coveralls. I noticed they seemed to be really high quality, but don't know much about high-end work clothes.

Sizes are always a problem for me at 6' 7" and long arms. They had the shirts in 2XL but I usually need an 2XLT. Figured it wouldnt matter working on the car if the sleeves were a little short so I bought 3 of them at $5 each. I really wanted the coveralls but they only had 5XL and 6XL!!

Anyway once I tried on the shirts they were great and sleeves so long I don't think many people could wear them.

Some company spent a lot on these, the embroidered american flag patch alone would be $5.00 easy.

I'm pretty sure that's a salesman's sample of a battle mace. It has interchangeable bits depending on the foe you're up against--spikes for armored kniggits, blades for peasants, studs for sparring practice, etc. Quite rare and valuable! Congrats!

Damon, you got a real deal on the shirts - can not beat the price!

BMWRD0 - that's a super deal! Please post it once restored. A while ago I got one missing the drawers with bunch of tools and even more dirt. Could not find the drawers and decided to sell it (forgot what I asked - I think around $20). A guy who bought it was building a custom RV and found a very unique use for it - he planned to install control panels for multiple RV controls inside it.

Yes. I have never seen a Fairmount before, though, only the Blackhawk "Adjusto." That's fairmountly rare.
I don't think so, too precision for drain plugs. Maybe tap or ream handle.
A tap or reamer handle would not require an adjustable square male stud. Each of those female openings, intended for male drain plugs, has a square male bung exterior, intended for female drain plugs. And the "Adjusto" was advertised that way explicitly in the 1935 Blackhawk catalog, when it was first introduced. I have one. I also have a similar tool called the Xcel, made by Park Metalware in Orchard Park, NY, in 1924. That was iintended for square nuts and bolts. Before they became known as Xcelite, and focused almost exclusively on nut drivers, they were focused on adjustable wrenches.

Dudley,

That Thumbler’s Tumbler is designed for wet tumbling using stainless pins as media. Lots of tutorials on line. ...and as previously noted, you do indeed ****!

Best regards,
John

Thanks for the info on that tumbler. I had no idea it was that nice. I had fun watching the videos.

I went through the Kennedy 620 today, and there were no tool surprises inside, but that thing is MINT! (FYI the front is there just not in the picture)

I hope to get through the other boxes tonight!

LS, I did more research on the mystery sockets from post #707. I may have a good lead on the source.

I have one (and only one) Bog socket. I compared it to the 25/32 mystery socket, and the knurling matches in shape and location. The overall socket shape matches, as does the broaching (with the relief at the base of the hex), and the fractional markings seem very close.

Perhaps the sockets were made by the same supplier, or Bog made the mystery sockets to be sold under another brand?

See the attached photos.

Prov,
I think you have a match. A quick refresh from AA site shows the same width band of knurl pattern - 3,4,3,4 diamonds, etc. I’d venture Bog made them. Possibly unbranded for sale by retailers other than Western Auto?
I rarely encounter Bog, or maybe I do but don’t realize it.

Well done sir! I think Lugz cleaned up a similar snappy box in the barn find tool box thread. Very nice p&c carry box as well!

Just picked this up last night. Really surprised it lasted almost a month on CL. Seems to be in pretty good shape, PO says the only issue is the release gear needing to be reattached at the bottom. He suggested tack welding the gear on the shaft of the bottom of the handle. Looking at a breakdown, it seems like it is just missing a jam nut. Probably going to reach out to Mattblast so see if I can get new labels made. Very hard to see, but the cover over the pump (right half of the base) has Hein Werner embossed in it. Should clean up really well.

Oh, and it only cost me $30. Looked it over quickly when I went to pick it up, and had money out when the guy answered the door.IMG_20210301_182704.jpgIMG_20210301_182716.jpegIMG_20210301_182723.jpeg

Bought this on marketplace for 25,-.
I find this to be a weird set, hex wrenches with some triple squares? Only two long hex too and no short triple squares. Could this be a specialised set?
Still, neat to own.

That's awesome. Right before Xmas I picked up a 4 ton Hein Werner off CL for $20. It holds but will need a rebuild. The embossed cover is damaged as well and a new one would be nicer than straightening this one. I found the rebuild kits for $95. One of these days I'll get to it. These SOB's are HEAVY.

Small haul (Lugz 2021_15) from the flea today. The keyhole saw has an 1877 patent date on it and a Disston saw blade inside. Guessing Disston, but I didn't look it up yet. Wartime (1942) Ferret speeder. No idea who the blacksmith is, but I admire the frame.

Here's a closer look at the markings on that keyhole saw. I posted more photos on the Handsaw thread I just bumped. And here's a better look at the burned in anvil, tongs, hammer, and horseshoe artwork on that frame.

So you rolled the poor guy just for his frame?? I was actually looking forward to you finding an obscure date/name/reference on the back of the picture that you would would do a deep dive into and come up with an incredible story about him founding a tool empire!

Funny you should jest like that. I actually did feel a smidge of remorse separating the photo from the frame. Somebody felt a great deal of admiration for the subject of the portrait to adorn the frame with their handiwork like that. I can only hope that its next subject - whatever or whoever that may be, lives up to it.

Here is the Coleman Canada 500A stove I bought off Eprey last W/E got here a day early!

A bit of a project, but all parts are there. I need to fire up the E tank... and this may be my first nickle plating project for the collar...

Got into my Habitat purchase from last week. Stopped in at a good time, because there was some new inventory.

Found a nice bunch of vintage Craftsman. Three hammers, a nice Crown top tape measure, wire gauge, a mini screwdriver and nut driver set that I don’t see too often.

Then when about to leave, spotted a sad ugly tool box on a bottom shelf. Bluegrass decal, okay, you had me at hello!

Too bad someone marked the price in such a place. I tried to remove it but could only lighten it some.

Forever the 9.99 box I guess, but it actually only cost $6 during a 40% off sale! :rocker:

That's "66.6" upside down, 3bay. And since it's cursed, you should just send it to me.

Seriously, I have exactly one (1) Bluegrass tool, a ball-pein hammer, but I don't have to tell you that if you're not keeping that, there are guys with dozens of Bluegrass tools who would open up their wallets 10x $10, at a minimum, for a box with that decal. In fact, a friend of mine in Tennessee.

Nice find.
