GForceJunky, I found a B&D #83 grinder last July. It also is listed as 115 volts, but like yours, it shows the amps as 14.6/13. This is 50/60 cycle ratings. A modern single phase, 60 cycle, 1 HP motor draws 16 amps. Either the B&D is VERY efficient, or it isn't a full 1 HP. A 3/4 HP modern motor draws 13 amps at 60 cycles.

That said, my grinder is very powerful. Probably much more powerful than a modern 3/4 HP grinder with the same amp rating. Mine is extremely smooth and quiet. It didn't come with the spark guards and tool rests like yours, but I got 5 new wheels!

I'd be very interested in photos of your tool rests and guards. I can guess about the spark guards, but dimensions on the tool rests would be a great help.

PS: Search archive.org for the 1953 and 1959 B&D catalogs. This grinder is shown in both.

Thanks for the tip on the catalogues. Looks like this setup would've been around $188 in 1953. Not cheap whatsoever. Interesting too that there was a 25 Hz version...not sure who was running 25Hz 115 or 230 but it's listed. In the 1958 catalogue it specifically mentions that you have to specify 115 OR 230 and that it's not reconnectable. I'm curious to see how things are wired when I open mine up - hopefully tomorrow night I can get into it a bit.

Unfortunately the guy I bought it from didn't have any extra/new wheels but hopefully I can snag some up from 'Hot Deals' or CL/FB MP.

As for pics and dimensions - happy to help with that. If you can, shoot me a PM with a cell # and/or email and I can send you more info when I get it out of the trunk and set up.

Glad to hear this thing is a beast - that's what I wanted. Planning to make it mobile as my garage is small. Thinking I'll screw it too a moving dolly or something similar but homemade that rolls easily but that I can also lock down when I need to grind.

Well, after a long period of not buying anything, I finally got some luck this weekend. The tools are stuck for a weeks in quarantine before I will start cleaning them.

Got the lot from the sale of an old mechanic and gunsmith gentlemen. The sons were selling the tools. Was not the first one - probably missed some good staff. There was an old Huot box with taken off lead and a stuck drawer. Decided to help the owners to open it (somebody left BluePoint tap and die set in open position in wrong direction - worked payed off - bought it for $5)

Estate sale for a plumber/handyman that was already picked over. Found a few items I could use, and a couple of "why not".

• New 15 tine bow rake with fiberglass handle.
• Old pick mattock
• Hatchet marked "Sweden Drop Forged" and some stamps, can anyone identify?
• Block Grinder 1/2HP 397.19340 missing one eye shield and side cover. Looked rough but bought it for the original light and quench tray.
• Grinder was on lightweight stand, I've now got two of these stands that came with block grinders, was this a Sears accessory?
• Two Spare Tire Carriers the right size for my boat trailer.
• 8 feet of heavy galvanized chain.
• Three spools of 10 AWG THHN stranded copper wire. Not sure how many feet were originally on each roll but it's a lot of wire.

damon18 it looks like those are 500 foot spools. At least 250 ft. if the core of the spool is large diameter. Either way, you **** for that haul! Check the price of wire currently, you will be shocked!

Minor acquisition today, but it was one of those things where timing is everything.

Last weekend I had decided to fell a 12" diameter Mountain Cedar that was mostly dead and leaning over my neighbor's fence. In preparation, I asked my pool of friends if any had a come-along I could borrow for the task. No one had one so I bought one ($41) but ended up not being able to use it due to the anchor tree in my yard being too far away for the combined lengths of chains and strap available. After resorting to the strength of four friends to hold the tree, we got it down and I returned the unused come-along.

Today I bought a barely used (probably once!) come along for $5 so now I'm ready for the next tree and I have an extra $36 in my pocket!

The Plomb 12pt 7/8" 5428 socket was $1.

Speaking of come-alongs, I was at a garage sale a year ago where the seller was moving and getting rid of extra stuff. He had a bundle that included a like-new come-along, T-post pounder, T-post puller, and stretcher bar for woven-wire fencing. He was asking $15.00 for the bundle. A young man was trying to talk him out of the come-along, without the rest of the bundle, but the seller wouldn't split them up.

I asked the young man if he would pay $5.00 for the come-along, and he agreed, so I paid the seller the $15.00, sold the come-along for $5.00, and kept the rest. I use the post pounder and post puller regularly. I don't use the stretcher bar, so I'll sell it for $5.00, which will leave me with $5.00 invested in the remaining two tools that together cost almost $60.00 if bought new.

The seller got his full asking price, and everybody else gets a great deal!

I have been off my game so far this year. Seems like I'm always finding postings just as they have sold. I have even been stood up on a deal. I'm not surprised what happened today. I reached out to a guy about a 12" Craftsman / Atlas lathe just as he had posted it yesterday. We agreed to meet this morning at his shop. I arrived on time and sat in the truck waiting for him thinking he would come outside. Ten minutes go by I decide to knock on the door. A lady comes to the door. I tell her I'm looking for "Billy". She smiles and starts shaking her head and said he got locked up last night!

That's my luck this year!

A bit of humor is the lady had "Billy" tattooed on her neck. I'm telling myself that if his name was on his women that more than likely it was engraved all over the lathe too!

The Liberty Tool Company in Maine is up for sale, for any of you contemplating retirement to the tool-rich New England coastal region. Reading the linked letter below cemented my plan to stop in when I go up to visit my daughter soon. For the tool deals, sure, but I want to meet the owner! Note at 72, he's selling the business, to include all the inventory and lessons in tool picking. Also note that he plans to continue picking indefinitely, so I wonder whether a delivery contract or a non-compete clause are part of the deal, too!

This person is definitely one of us--this line is in the contact section: "Otherwise leave a message at 888-405-2007 and I will return your call from my truck while tool picking on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday."

A small $2 haul, but I have a lot of questions...



I've answered a few myself, like the KEN Tool G14--What is it? It's a Drain Plug Wrench. Earliest KEN catalog available is 1950/51 which has the "improved" 10-lug version where the lugs were turned 45 degrees for easier use. I count only 9 lugs on this one including the one that was sheered off on the top right. Anyone know when the "improved" version hit the streets? I'm guessing immediately post-war. The lugs on this one are--roughly: 11/16, 5/8, 9/16, 1/2, 7/16(missing), 13/32, 11/32, a blade that is 3/16x 7/8 and a tapered lug on the end that runs from 9/32 to 3/8.

Both the Craftsman Cold Chisel and the punch have WF on the front but on the back the chisel has a D and the punch has a C. What gives? Western Forge or C--Stanley Works (Taiwan) and D--Kington Chinese?

The Snap-on Universal is an F-80. It has a G date code which would make it 1945 if the font didn't look so much like the 2006 code. I know this isn't only 15 years old. I checked ebay and three of the five F-80s have a G code and each of the universals looks different.

One looks like mine and has knurling and the G is in a sans-serif font.
One has knurling and adds "Made in USA" but the G is in a serif font.
The last one has no knurling but has three rings, Made in USA, sans serif and it's chromed. This one also is stamped F-80-G whereas mine and the others have the G off on its lonesome. So as much as I would like to think I have a 1945 universal, I suspect the G is some sort of model designation and not a date code at all. Comments?

Finally, I hear a lot of talk here about double stampings. Does this count? Big deal or not?

New in the box Stanley push drill and push screwdriver! I am a Stanley ****, so this was nice, although I wish the boxes had the labels still. All of that for $43, with most going to the Stanleys.

That Ferret u-joint is 1945 for sure. A lot of wartime date codes were stamped by hand and they can be anywhere. On yours, it looks like it came out too light so they hit it again. They were using whatever they had on hand up so styles definitely varied. My second picture shows a socket dual stamped with ‘41 and ‘45 codes.

Radar, your "mystery" Ken tool cracked me up. I look at it, and say it's a multi-size wrench for internal square head fasteners. You found it called a drain plug wrench.

I've been amusing myself recently, observing how so many people/companies name a tool based on a specific item it'll be used on. My recent favorite is looking at how many ways hook/pick sets get renamed as "o-ring removal tools" or "cotter pin removal tools" etc. It's a hook on a handle, until marketers get involved!!!

I'm not sure this was a hand stamp, though. When I ran it under my Scanning Electron Microscope it reveals evenly spaced second strikes on almost all letters and even a ghost of a third strike on some. I don't know how these stamps are impressed, but I assumed is was on some sort of a roll press so I can't imagine how a back-chatter strike--much less two would have occurred.

As for the various styles of not only the G but the differences described above in the three sockets themselves that all have Gs, I don't know how they could all have come from the same year.
