On my way to and from the doctors today, I made a few stops. OK, the last one was a bit of a long way home, but that is how it goes sometimes with this hobby.

51421620907_956851c2c5_h.jpg
The first stop, a woodworking millwright, turned out to be a bust, and at the second stop, I only found the book on upholstery and the General jeweler's screwdriver. The third stop might be a go back tomorrow, as she had a whole garage to go through, although I didn't have the time I did find the Kromedge backsaw. The two Craftsman C-clamps and the kindjal can from an estate sale right around the corner from my house, while the Stanly Yankee PH2 came on my way to the last stop, where I picked up the Colombian 503 and these booklets from an aero correspondence course.
51422560933_87c4b18c8b_h.jpg
These are from about 1940, and I was able to get the first 10, but looking around online there are at least 58 in the whole course. Anyway, the vise set me back $40 and I paid about $15 altogether for the rest.

Here's some more pics of the kindjal:

My guess is it is your basic tourist version from a real Mideastern bazaar, probably about 1960ish. No import country stamp and the chasing is real and fairly well done, but the blade is certainly nothing special, nor is the workmanship on the sheath.

EDIT; used the wrong word for an Arabic knife. The correct word is Jambiya. Kindjal is from southern Russia.

The flea market was slim pickings today. Expected more sellers this weekend. Still good fun and found enough to make the trip worthwhile.

Clark Feather mirror, Bahco triangle blade scraper, small Sargent pliers, Craftsman black band, ABC Bitstick made in Germany bit driver (green handle should clean up well), Snap On nut driver, Wizard 1/8 screwdriver, vintage Craftsman shank for spade bits, Craftsman V 1/4 extension,Snap On 9/16 combo, Challenger 1-1/8, old “turnscrew”, Oak Leaf monkey wrench by WM ENDERS, St. Louis.

The monkey wrench has seen some rough days but works great. Neat logo, what‘s visible anyway.

The Snap On wrench was funny. I ask how much and seller say, “Oh, my friend you have a good eye.” I was bracing for an insane price and he tells me $2. Some people are good to deal with.

Back when I was 18, I bought a kit like this one. Still have it, but it’s 2200 miles away.

This one popped up locally, haggled a bit, got it for a song. It’s missing a few pieces, but I have fillers I can put in there until I can find the proper ones.

I love the 117 piece kit because it has the extra storage spot for other tools you might need for the task at hand (these kits are my junkyard boxes), so you don’t have to carry extra bags/boxes. Plus they fit nicely behind or under a seat most of the time, so they ride in whatever I’m DD’ing at the time.

Kinda stoked actually. These don’t come up too often for sale, especially the USA made ones.

I have a 99 pc. Metric set in a box like that with the sockets and drive tools on once side and just a set of combos on the other side with a panel that can hold all the loose stuff in when you close it. Its stuffed too, a second set of combos, pliers, thread file, even a 6" hack saw.

Its my road box, adn with it I can rebuild near anything on my Samurai or the 4X4 Toy van.

Not much going on out there, tool-wise. Lots of garage sales, lots of worn-out power tools, lots of cheap junk, but not much out there in the way of good tools. Anyway, I think I spent about $5 on tools and another forty on furniture.
51423881842_8c4f2f9574_h.jpg
From the forth stop, a very engraved Proto socket driver, Woodruff cutter, Williams SOE tappet, and a 5/16" chuck key. $2.
From the very last stop, a US American Fork and hoe hatchet 1942 for $3.

I did buy a fold-out writing desk along with a hardback of Ulysses by Joyce for $40. It was not from the thirties as the seller though, but rather the sixties and is a nice piece of, I believe, Early American revival.

And yes, it is still in the back of my truck.

Here is the Joyce:

And here is what I bought at the local brewery were I stopped for lunch on the way home:

Fred and WNYflyer both ****! Particularly like the Plomb finds for both of you!

Quick edit, freudianfloyd posted while I was writing…you **** so bad for those vises!!!

Yesterday I took the day off with the intent of driving down to Packwood WA for my first trip to the twice annual Packwood swap meet. I also saw an ad in near by Randle that had pictures of high end toolboxes so I left early to get to that sale right as it opened.

After a nearly 3 hour drive I got to the sale in Randle only to be severely disappointed. The tool boxes and tools in the online pics were nowhere to be seen, and in its place was a bunch of junk. I walked around for about 5 minutes and determined there was nothing of interest there. On leaving I chatted with another tool collector, he had talked with the sale hosts and was told that “the tool boxes are off site and we didn’t get to it”. Yeah right, what a bait and switch! Oh well, I was headed to the swap meet anyway and I wasn’t about to let a deceiving ad ruin my day. I feel bad for anyone that drove a long way for that sale though…

I only had 3 hours before I had to head back north, so I basically speedwalked through the entire swap meet. Everything of interest at first was $8-10 wrenches and $20+ ratchets so I was a bit worried I wouldn’t find anything. But fairly quickly I found a few $1 tables and other booths where rust was obscuring some nice stuff.

Here’s what I ended up with, I paid about $1 each for all of these pieces.

From the left, Herbrand, long C, Lectrolite, Barcalo, Plomb, P&C, Challenger, Indestro

All told, 6 hours driving and 3 hours picking. Had a chance to do it again today and elected not to…more to come on that.

My first stop today opened at 9, and supposedly some guy was there at 8, and bought lots, including a 65# anvil. No worries. When I got there, some guy was hovering over a vintage toolbox, priced @$35 for tools and box. After he moves on to a Freud safety dado set, I swooped in. Lots of auger and ships auger bits, a 1950s Disston saw catch my eye, and a UP labeled Slaymaker padlock. See some ephemera, it’s an UP RR book of rules, with some paper inside. Ok, I’m hooked.
Guy says, the box and tools $20. Gramps used to work for the railroad. Ok, lemme think for a second, I’ll take it. Guy even offered to help load it. I expected to be able to carry it 30 yards to the truck, but wisely decided to take his help.

got it home, spread it out to take pics, and found other goodies as well, the remains of a wallet with more company slips in it, dated 1950, an old skeleton key, marked UP, an abused hammer head, about 4#. No wonder it was so heavy. And it had no carry handles, on top or on the ends, so a bit awkward. This one will take a while to parse out. Couple of OK saws, hammer handles, average pliers, including one with the made in USA triangle. Snap on speeder, Black Hawk 13/16 combo, Yankee spiral driver, Stanley looking brace not marked.

PXL_20210904_191158414-X3.jpg

Also grabbed a bottle of Shinola, how could I resist, an Rtic ice bucket, and a single level recent Workmate , just needs a knob and some nuts to make it functional. One missing angled foot might be harder to source.

After yesterday I elected to stay relatively close to home, of course the first sale I wanted to go to was 45 min away:) As I was headed up there I got a text from a fellow collector I met recently. “Have you seen this ad? Full property full of tools and car parts…free!” But it doesn’t open until 11 and I’m raring to go after dropping the kids at Grandma’s for an overnight. So I headed north.

Well of course the sale I highlighted was a bust. “40 years of accumulation” stayed in the shop and they put the junk out for sale. Oh well, headed back to the “free” sale, was kinda kicking myself for wasting an hour and a half but whatever. Stopped at a TOO sale in the way back and came up with this for $5

Super rusty Dunlap plane, will be interesting to see if I can get this running again. No name Phillips until I can get the rust off, Plomb breaker, Proto 3/8 ratchet, P&C DBE. The bag of sockets are mostly foreign but I noticed a few hex drive in there and asked the guy if I could pick through it. “How bout you take the bag for a buck”

23B3ED25-73A8-46CC-B71D-F16B7A78BD50.jpeg

As I was driving down to the “free” sale I started to ask myself if this was the same hoarder place I’d been to 4 times already in the last month. Due to the magic of Google maps I convinced myself it was not, and off I went.

When I arrived it was the same hoarder sale that had been picked on for weeks…well ****. Now that I’m here might as well dig around a bit, after all everything is free!

I was there for about 2 hours, at one point this was the pile in front of me…

F954A4C8-D4E8-4FC4-A7AA-AAB9D0F26EDA.jpeg

Here’s the scene in the RV barn…

4A68036C-7E02-4FB9-91D9-04A72D917E19.jpeg

One of the reasons I stayed so long is that a bit of quick digging resulted in a Walden 1/4 partial set and a Plano box with a bunch of stuff in it. A lot of additional effort didn’t yield much but there were a few wins This is what I eventually left with for $0

At top are 4 hammer handles and a couple of Norton 220 grit wheels. Then we have cross pein, Walden set, a literal box of change, Plano box with a bunch of stuff including a Snap on ratcheting wrench and breaker bar of weird size (9/32?). NOS Petersen vise grip, rusty compass, Lutkin rule, cool Victor box. Finally a small Starrett tap handle, Duro Chrome speeder, random pulley, USN lock with keys, and the world’s smallest hammer

9016FBDD-144C-449F-BF11-A02800589B55.jpeg

After that I was tired and about ready to go home but wanted to check a couple more sales off. The only reason I’m posting these ones is I hope someone can enlighten me on these wrenches, I’m guessing Barcalo but not sure. 2 bucks.

I got this Disston D-23 crosscut saw; 26" blade, 10 teeth per inch, dates to between 1947 and 1955. It will need some cleanup but the blade etch is the nicest one I've found in the wild.

The radio is a Phonola. They weren't the greatest quality but they were built by Waters-Connelly in Rochester, MN so there's kind of a local connection, and I just liked the look. It needs work, it will power up and the tubes glow, but no sound.

RTM, I don't think that Snap-on is a speeder. It looks like a brace, is it a number 5?
Early Brace The No 5 is a Brace rather than a Speeder.

The difference between and Brace and a Speeder is the width.

The Brace has a deeper swing and has more leverage.

Shown above in the first picture is a No. 5 brace.

There are several variations in early and late braces.

In the lower photos the swing handle is shown. The top photo shows a pinched stop.

It in not clear to me if there are any with ball detent stops.

If so, these would likely be earlier.

The lower panel shows the bend in the brace stops the grip from moving.

This is later 1920s. The lower right photos show the squares.

Both have 3 ball detents, 2 high and one low.

It also shows the earlier square is smaller and the upper square is machined around the ball detent.

It is Texas, after all--and now any whacko can carry without a license.
Old Radar,

Living in TN I am not familiar with TX gun laws, but generally (and here for sure) you must be able to legally own a firearm to carry a firearm openly/concealed, with/without a license. That means you must be able to pass the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) check. NCIS determines whether a person can legally buy or own a firearm. This check is not perfect, but is a pretty good filter to find those who should not purchase, possess, or carry a firearm. Of course there are always people (criminals) who do not obey the law and should be given an extended stay in the gray bar hotel.

I walked to a sale up the street this morning and found a few rusty treasures but it was pretty picked over. I shouldn’t complain since I was allow to grab things the day before the first sale a few months ago. The gentleman doing the pricing I have known since our daughters played high school volleyball together and he let me name the price.

After I got home from that sale, my copilot and I went to a neighborhood sale in the Sherwood Forest area of El Sobrante, CA. Most of the sales were drive-bys but we stopped at one that looked slightly promising. I asked the regular tool question and the seller pointed to what looked to me like a Kennedy box full of tools. I asked it I could look through the box and he quoted a price for everything that was ridiculously low and I whipped out my wallet. We poked around a few more sales and found a few tools but I wanted to get home and see what I had bought. The seller had loaded it in the trunk of the car and I had to unload the box to get it out. It turned out to be a pretty nice Powr-Kraft marked box that I believe was supplied by Kennedy. The contents turned out to be a 50/50 mix of imported **** and vintage American tools.

Yup, I believe you are correct. But doesn’t it function just like a speeder, on steroids? I was laughing thinking it was a stubby “sawed off”version originally.

The box is slightly buried right now so I can’t dig into the fine details between the several versions they list.

$25, newer stuff than I usually go for, but I couldn't pass it up. I haven't finished sorting it out yet, more pics to come.

OK, so here is the story, as we all like tales of our finds. The second stop was an estate sale company's warehouse. They needed to clear out some dead items to make room for an upcoming sale, or something like that. I have found good stuff there at decent prices, but this time it looked like a lot of dreck; newer furnishings, brick-a-brack, nothing of interest. There were tools in a corner, but most looked like stuff I don't need and was too pricy in any case. But I saw this tub sitting on the floor, and from a quick poke, it looked pretty interesting.
BMWRD: how much for the tote of stuff?
salesman: well, there is a lot in there...
BMW: a lot of ****. (which was true, as there were some empty boxes on top.)
Sales: yeah... How much you thinking?
BMW: $20
Salesman: Make it $25?
BMW: Sold.

It turns out it was mostly MAC, with some other stuff:
51421416900_65300d8957_h.jpg
Ignore the random stuff on my bench, but this is all the MAC. Some new supplies in boxes, such as branded wirewheels, cylinder hones, brake tools, some larger body tools for repairing fenders, a wrench roll, a bunch of ignition wrenches, a full set of flathead drivers, headlight tools (4), 1/2" ratchet, serpentine belt tool, oil filter wrench, punches, scribes, Stanley tape replacement with MAC branding on the package, at least six picks, the list goes on.

But wait, there's more!
51419673327_d077b87ab0_h.jpg
a full set of Snap-on torx drivers

51421193904_ec80af423b_h.jpg
Set of Snap-on spark plug hole taps, USA knife in sheath, SK snap ring pliers, a magnet and mirror gizmo, a small Stanley plane, and a Blackhawk (NB) ratchet rebuild kit.

It seems the guy liked belt buckles:
51419688247_e19021626d_h.jpg

And here is what is left in the bucket:
51420701578_d4c6b54343_h.jpg
an ignition analyzer from '97, some hex keys, a Ford wrench, and in the green box is a 7/8" hex key from Holo. There were also some misc. punches and chisels: Mayhew, Proto, Craftsman, Malco.
Major suckage! I can't believe you pulled all that for $25.

My score today. $16 total. The ratchet set is a Speed Master, missing two sockets, but worth $3 to me.
Any info on Speed Master? Not run into that name before.

The other big score are the two waterstones. I'll have to find out what they are.

The cutters are Boenfu tools. No country of origin, but they look to be decent quality, and sharp. Also bought some other stuff, but nothing else too interesting.

They did have a Wilton vise, ~4" the art deco-ish one. But it had been broke and welded back together and they wanted $42 for it. I passed. Mostly cause my wife was with me. But if its still there on half price day, maybe?
As others have said- that particular speedmaster set was made by pennens- a plomb subsidiary. 40's era.

This time of year I try to concentrate on hitting privately run sales rather the professional estate sales due to the typically lower pricing. That being said yesterday I hit a promising looking sale like 30 minutes away that started at 8:00 am......DUD ! ughhh. Well at least I was on the road early for the 9:00 am start sales. On the way back went to a family run estate sale that ended up being another dud. Now I was bummed and started heading back to my city about 20 minutes away. Since it was only like a mile from my house I decided for my third and final stop to stop at a sale that basically mentioned tools in passing in their ad on CL and the local paper...what the hell since it was so close. Got there about 20 minutes after opening and it was very quiet, in fact for whatever reason yesterday was very quiet traffic wise. Anyways spied a table with good tools as well as lower grade brands in the seldom used tools, never would have expected the sale to have good tools but you just never know. So ended up the day on a high with the following.

Sunex hose pliers and Craftsman USA metric ratcheting wrenches $15

Snap-On and Cornwell SAE swivel sockets, Snap-On 1/2 drive deep SAE impact sockets, Matco 3/8 drive deep metric socket set, Snap-On Torx sockets.

Snap-On 1/2 drive 6 point deep metric impact sockets, Snap-On 1/2 drive 6 point short metric impact sockets, Snap-On 1/2 drive 12 point short metric impact sockets. $70 for all the sockets
Wow,
Major suckage on the sockets.
You bought the deep impact set at a great price,
and got the rest of the socket sets for free.
Well done.

I carried a 111B for 30 days while backpacking in the Talkeetna Mountains of Alaska, and again for an equally long trip in Wyoming's Wind River Range. It was vintage then, and heavy, but a reliable workhorse.
I just sent one, along with a SVEA to my old backpacking partner. I had been hanging onto them for far too long, but he has a young son to take out with him on his trips and could use them more than I could. But, you will never get my Coleman PEAK1 out of my cold, dead hands!

But doesn’t it function just like a speeder...?
Yes. In fact, they are often called "speed brace" or "speed wrench, brace type" or even just "short speed wrench" dropping the reference to the brace altogether. I have surmised before that the terminology has to be derived from its woodworking cousin, right?

As a quality over quantity picker, I don't mind coming home from the flea market with only two items, but they should be remarkable, and this trip (Lugz 2021_55) did not disappoint. I do not have the nipper in my Schollhorn collection (which now numbers 14 unique items...), and that socket is a Billmont. It's not marked, but it's unmistakable. I have two sets and several loose orphan pieces and I have never seen this before. The pins are more reminiscent of a pin spanner, but I'm guessing it's a valve lapper.

More later...

I had a pair that were so rusty I couldn't salvage them, didn't think to keep them for screws etc. I think Starrett also made a piano wire nipper that was compound action.

Good day at the flea market! Little Giant Ladder $60. Probably my Best Buy Ever! Hardly been used. Fini air compressor $20. Needs a new regulator.
