$10 today for a large "quick release" wood working vise made by W.C. Toles......I thought I got a steal but it turns out I paid more than retail. They were selling for $6.50 back in 1896. After a good spray it seems to function perfectly.

That's some good stuff right there. It does make you wonder, "how did this get here?"
I have managed to pick up a few interesting US made tools over the years, how any of them made it to the West of Ireland I do not know. While we are currently a relatively wealthy county, that certainly was not the case pre 90s, so finding a nearly 100 year old bike wrench, in a small town, in a small county, in a small county, hanging onto the edge of Europe, well that just intrigues me

Bought 2 old tool boxes with tools and the usual detritus. This one is a keeper. Cleaned up well.

The furthest west I went to in Ireland was Limerick, as I was sick at the time along with being broke. I did have a longish train ride from Dublin after a bit of panic trying to get from one train station in the northern bit of town to the one that ran out west though and met a lovely person on the train who arranged a place for me to sleep when I got into town around 10 pm. This was in the late '80s and while I knew it was a bit poorer then, I didn't realize just how much poorer it was until recently. I watched a documentary called Hands, about local Irish craftsmen, and thought it was filmed in the sixties due to how people were dressed and what they drove. It wasn't until the end when I watched the credits that I found out it was more recent than my time there.

Still, a lovely country, and I would dearly enjoy returning.

Can we get some different views of the Craftsman vise? Looks pretty darn cool. Did you post it in the Vises thread?
I have not put it in the vise thread.

Patented Oct, 8, 1912, Trademark is "HERO" inside a Maltese cross...

I'm betting its for the folding handle

I covered a lot of ground today but was extremely picky. I left a fair bit out there either because of price or just couldn’t get the deals without getting a mountain of scrap with it. Just came home with this Snap on 5/8 and Bonney 3/8 for a total of $3.

Also from Antique trader.com

1631405524858.png

A Hero company made these, along with scores of other companies. Being of aluminum, it probably dates to the late 1940s into the 1950s.

These were used in many ways, especially for picnics, camping, etc. and for mineral water from spas such as the ones in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

I had about 8-9 stops planned for today, a couple looked really good, while some were just filler. They listed tools, but not very well, and no pictures of them. But I started at what looked to be the best, and I wasn't disappointed:
51448858277_914c3f7c20_b.jpg
Two sheaves, a Stanley Level and Rule #80 scraper, brass nozzle, Huskey BE ratchet, vintage Kent-Moore torq wrench, Pike saw file handle, and an unmarked draw knife - $10 and there was a lot of good stuff left, but I didn't want to be greedy and you never know what prices will come down.

The second stop was OK, and I picked up two Proto mfd deeps and a Thorsen deep for a buck. Forgot to take pics though...

The next few stops were duds, either not a good address, or just junk tools. The fifth stop, on the other hand, was good.
51450394584_e2b7d6b4a9_b.jpg
It was a weird sale, some household stuff, some memorabilia-type stuff, and some machining stuff. As I was looking at the bin of reamers, which was marked $20, the woman said everything was half price, so I didn't even hesitate. I also got these stones in the box:
51448892227_4fca7ce6f8_b.jpg

And then I saw the books:
51450561794_519cb86114_b.jpg

51450077523_f3ded4ef6a_b.jpg

51450079148_060d394ebc_b.jpg
And I am a sucker for good rail books, so those all came home with me. All told I spent $15

The next two were duds but the final stop was OK, where I picked up this Disston back saw for $2.
51449921233_5bd9cca149_b.jpg
And there are the three deep sockets from earlier!

Last point (sorry I get stuck in something I have to run it down):

U S patent 740649 A is attributed to Hero Glass co for an insulating handle. I think you were spot on about that! The patent shows the handle on a coffeepot, but the owner's description specifically designated it for any vessel containing hot beverages. Hope this helps.

This one is NOT aluminum, but plated brass. I think nickel; I've seen claims it is silver? I don't think so as there is NO corrosion like silver gets. Mine also had the stack "inverted" compared to Cguys...

Only thing to show from the few sales I hit this weekend, government issued tubing wrench set. Wrenches are stamped made in the USA and also stamped with an "S" which from my googlefu perhaps means made by Stride. Looked to be little used. $10

Those collapsible cups (conceptually) remind me of the plastic ones that BSA sold in the 1980s for backpacking. If that design idea goes back into the 19th century, that really would be impressive.

I had a few sales planned but we ended up only going to one. It was an estate sale a few miles from home put on by a company I’ve dealt with before. It seemed as if his prices had increased quite a bit but he was still willing to negotiate. Username had asked me to keep an eye out for a draw knife for him since I had found the folding one yesterday and this sale had a nice one which I picked up for him. Maybe he could find his own tools if he wasn’t lying on a beach in Kauai. The S-K set was missing one extension and of course the Craftsman =v= set was missing the crossbar.

Did some more poking at the history of collapsible cups and found a couple examples as early as the Civil war. I also found a reference that there were over 300 patents for collapsible cups! :wtf:

...they finally posted a CL ad for the local Flea,
This confuses me. Please explain the connection. Out here sellers just show up with their stuff. Sellers in your area are advertising on CL the stuff they plan to bring to the flea market? And shoppers read those to decide if they're going to go or not?
Most all is Craftsman long C,...[ ]...Oh YES! the tag with a string? It's from Sears,...[ ]...and the tag has a form date of 1943!
That's an interesting form date, since the box has a Heritage badge. Speaking of which, I never see those blue Heritage badges, always red. It pairs well with the blue box.
Private Lugnutz:

I have that same driver that came in a set my grandad gave me. Unfortunately the pouch nor the other components give a clue to maker or COO
Wow. That is in great and complete condition.
Last point (sorry I get stuck in something I have to run it down):
You'll fit in well, then!
Those collapsible cups (conceptually) remind me of the plastic ones that BSA sold in the 1980s for backpacking.
And they were still pot metal in the 60's and 70's.
Maybe he could find his own tools if he wasn’t lying on a beach in Kauai.
Snerk.
Don’t hate on me too bad! I’m drinking a Mai Thai on the lanai right now.
If you're not too hung over, I hear from a good source (Joe Friday from G503.com) that there is a flea market down near Pearl Harbor on Sunday mornings. :)

Also PATENT SEARCH EXPERTS - I'm striking out for anything on the Collapsible cup:

I've posted this before in a few threads, and I have now put it in the Sticky FOR FUTURE REFERENCE...

(1) Google "Annual Report of the Commissioner of Patents for the Year [YYYY]"
(2) Click on the link that results and it will take you to a digital online copy of the patents report for that year in the Smithsonian Libraries system.
(3) If you have a manufacturer's name, use the alphabetical index of patentees to find it. That is in the beginning of the document. If the patent has been assigned (if the mfgr is not the patentee), it will cite the assignor's name. Use the same index to find it.
(4) If you don't have a mfgr's name, use the alphabetical index of inventions or designs, by name, to find it. That is at the end of the document.
(5) As a last resort, you may use the magnifying glass search function. Be as specific as possible. Trying the index of inventions or designs by any and all possible descriptions is your best bet. If you have to use the search function, down below it will post blue teardrop-shaped bookmarks indicating the pages in the report for that year that contain your search term.
(6) Click on the blue bookmarks
(7) The search term will be highlighted on the page in yellow.

The patent (1,040,652) was for the befitted bevels that purportedly kept the sections together better. I made some excerpts for you. Patent linked here.

Wow, that's an incredible history for those collapsible cups!

Never ceases to amaze me how many things we use today were designed so very long ago. That's one of the big things I've learned since following this and some of the vintage threads here.

@d42jeep: Those SK and Craftsman sets look great, and the Waterloo cabinet looks amazing.

Picked at swap friday, W&B, Whitman & Barnes S wrench. I believe this was retailed as semifinished or maybe raw outa the dies. Other side marked "hardened".
Decades ago collectors assumed PS in Keystone logo made it Pennsylvania Railroad connected.

Their schedule is very irregular. its not weekly, its not monthly, sometimes its Sat only, sometimes Sat/Sun, Sometimes Wed-Fri...

So without a CL ad, or a drive by, you just don't know...

its the ONLY unpredictable Flea I've ever seen, other than some organization (church, school, whatever), that just does a random one maybe once, maybe every 2-3 years...

And Lugz, thanks for both the Patent posts: search mechanize (again, Saved this time..) and the patent detail!

Finally made it through the wrenches in the tool lot I bought. I really like the Dodge Brothers wrench as we are a mopar family. There is still a small box of unknown makes and also some Japan doe wrenches. 0D1E8979-771F-41B7-AE67-68F9C267C7A4.jpegD7DE41EC-4916-4BBD-BDA6-17397F32B064.jpegAE6C0149-97FF-447B-8A3E-BA90D554277F.jpeg296608AA-32BF-4BAD-A044-EB5E95D638E3.jpeg40AFD003-3CB8-4D5C-9834-A0E008B5C8ED.jpeg
