Swung by Qtown after a nonproductive morning of deer pursuit. The airmass was confortable and I was in a spot with lessquitoes, instead of mosquitoes.7BABB639-10FA-4FCD-B0D6-2AEE1B7FC0C8.jpegAside from bluejays and wood thrushes, this marbled orb-weaver was all I saw.
884B8E36-2D56-4017-9823-128B2A7A182C.jpegEither this haul was $17, or I dropped a $5bill somewhere.
The dividers, which I thought were unmarked, turned out to be PS&W. I’m unsure whether the Mcaig-Hatch is a dupe or not. The C’man underline DBE is not a dupe, though I thought it would be. Smaller Vixen file cleaned up well. Braunsdorf-Mueller adj made in ElIzabeth NJ had been hammered so it wouldn’t open fully, but I got it apart and smoothed it up. Schollhorn Newhaven punch. C’man adj, Williams adj, C’man 12’ tape. Bonney channelocks, 7mm combo, C1 chisel, partial screw extractor set. Couple Thorsen sockets, Stanley-made Western Auto stubby Phillips head. The small Buffum ballpein turns out to have a crack running from the name right around the ball. Bummer about that, but it was less than a dollar.

We had a major limb (8-foot circumference, at least!) from the top of one of our giant white oaks come down in August and I cut most of it up into quite a pile of rounds. So today I went to a business moving sale and made a down payment on a gas-powered log splitter. It is Honda-powered, and the owner, a professional welder, added horizontal splitter bars to the main wedge. It fired right up and split some logs just fine. The owner is going to put a new hitch coupler on it and air up the tires for me. I'll pick it up on Wednesday. We shook hands on a final price of $500.

Today's finds, from a variety of garage sales, estate sales, garage sales that wanted to be estate sales, estate sales claiming to be garage sales, and a stop at the used tool dealers shop. I only encountered one jerk, a guy who would leave his bag of finds out in the middle of where people were walking through the sale. I started to dig through it once as I had no idea it was someone's stuff, and he started to get gruff with me about it, so I apologized and moved on. Later, he leaves it in my path, so sorta flung it at him saying "don't leave your **** where people are walking" and moved along. I hate it when people act like this, gives us hunters a bad name and reputation.

Anyway, here are the finds, in no particular order of sales. Everything was so jumbled in my truck I didn't bother.

Mitutoyo dial caliper (missing the needle, but I think I have the parts and tools to fix), behind that and hard to see is the box from a vintage torque wrench, music book from a novelty band, two copper backed lamps that will go in my shop and replace the tube lights, a variety of 1/4" sockets (Bonney, Williams, Plomb) and a Snap-on 3/4 drive coupler.

finger joint wooden box with steel corners and a leather handle, some raised panel SK wrenches, cigar box, Bessey clamp, Stanley 82 scraper, Challenger sockets, and a Keen Kutter file box.

Not the best day for yardsales. The local lake community had a lake wide sale this weekend, but it got off to a bad start when one drug addict murdered a second one and went on the run. Police had the whole place locked down. (The murderer has been dealt with). Anyway, didn't buy a thing there today.

Went to one other sale and bought the following:

New Britain Socket Set $7
20211002_175023.jpg
Brand new Lenox hole saw - $2
20211002_175028.jpg
And then picked up this Stack On gun safe to put some of my cheaper guns in that are overflowing from my big safe. - $200 (not sure if that is a good deal or not, but it looked brand new inside.)

Haven't posted here recently and I will throw some pics up tomorrow but wanted to get this off my chest today.
I am in Florida and we do have a certain amount of older folks.. LOL. My wife and I were hitting a neighborhood sale in an upper scale neighborhood when I over heard and observed a "buyer" running a short change scam on an older lady. She handed a $20 off to a friend who promptly split. At which point I walked over and pretty much stuck my face into the transaction and accused the "Buyer " of short changing the seller. I asked the seller how much money she was supposed to have and she had no idea. They got her confused and took advantage. At that point I know I couldn't really do anymore for the seller and left.

I am not a confrontational guy but I spent many years being responsible for a cash drawer and experienced quite a few short change artists and remember how they used to confuse and even scare me. Then I wised up and learned how to handle them.
My wife was not close but picked up my "tone" and came over to keep me from going overboard.

We left the area so we wouldn't run into them again. I just wish I had thought/ been calm enough to take a pic of the thief to post on NextDoor.com Hate a thief, taking advantage of an old lady.

OK, rant over

Checked out the last day of an estate sale. Ran into CBacres at the sale. We had a laugh about a weird dream I just had that he was in.
In the dream I was at a big party with a bunch of friends from different eras. I was on a huge concrete front porch of a house, playing fetch with an odd looking massive dog, like a large but hairy great dane. I kept throwing a giant hunk of meat off the porch, and the dog would bring the meat back each time a bit more eaten. CB appeared out the door of the house like it was his dog and suggested throwing it plush toys like a football and stuffed animals instead. :ROFLMAO:
Now I can explain exactly why this portion of the dream took place. Yesterday at dinner the wife showed me a picture of a Weimaraner. A couple years ago CB and I drove to the Florida Chapter BBQ get together at member JCquick’s house. JC had a dog like that. On the way to the BBQ, CB and I stopped at a bunch of yard sales, one of which I grabbed a couple collectible stuffed toys.
Finally, a dream that makes sense!

These are the likely keepers from the sale. Bought a few other items I may sell.

The home owner was German judging by the books and other belongings.

Grabbed 3 German tools: the VBW pliers and two old Knipex cutters. Snap On screwdriver, General and Westcraft punches, Starrett pin vise. Rulers are Craftsman crown top, Fowler, and Pratt Whitney. 2 Kant clamps. A hole bunch of dremel bits, Brown and Sharpe booklet, German made dental burrs, Craftsman strap wrenches and saw blade, 3 sets of Austrian, etc made small files and a nice old Merit adjustable wrench.007FB15E-9986-4CA5-AD84-3E3475BE789C.jpeg

Today was one of those days where something you aren't even moderately looking for simply falls into your lap. I'm a hand-tool woodworker whenever I get some free time and have built a fair collection of user planes over the years. One model of Stanley that I've never even bothered to look for because of the prices they bring has been the 71 and 71 1/2 router planes. This afternoon I walked in the front door of the Restore and literally set my hand down on top of one... and for $7, you'd better believe it came home with me!

...now I just need to track down a 1/4" and 1/16" cutter for the little ******.

Anyway, enough story time. We all know we're here for the pictures.

Total pull today:
Stanley No. 71 Series 11 Router Plane:rocker:
Proto 5480 1/2" Speeder
Proto 9804 Flat Driver
Proto 7716-H Deep Impact 1/2 x 3/8
Plvmb 5216 1/2 x 3/8
Plvmb 5216 1/2 x 3/8
Plvmb 5218 9/16 x 3/8
SK Wayne 42470 (appears unused:headscrat)

Best regards, all, and happy hunting.
John

Nice gets, AK. I also do hand tool woodworking (mostly, I still use my drill press and scroll saw) and found my 71 the same way, walking into the Restore. The one in Napa, CA had a glass case under the register filled with older stuff, but they wouldn't sell any of it. But, one day there was a new lady behind the till, so I asked her what the price on it was, and she said she hated not selling stuff, as what was the point of taking donations and not turning them into money for housing, so she sold it to me for $10. Not as old as yours, as it is nickeled, but still works well.

When I only come home from the flea market with one item, it had better be noteworthy or I'll feel like I wasted the gas and time, and today's trip (Lugz 2021_59) was one of those days. BELL SYSTEM S first aid kit. It's much later than the rest of the BELL SYSTEM stuff (mainly A and B, some C) in my collection and the BELL SYSTEM B box that I am keeping it in, but it's a metal case with a metal clasp, not plastic, and won't look at all out of place. It's just the kind of accent piece that makes a BELL SYSTEM kit look authentically more complete and better. It's complete - and the contents were still arranged exactly as the instructions under the lid recommended, which is just the kind of seemingly silly thing that will keep me tickled for years.

And a Nicholson smooth rasp. It was entirely rust-clogged. As I have suggested MetalRescue might be a cure for such an ailment, I’m trying it out myself.

WisJim is right. I have a small galoot made router that uses an Allen key for a blade.

I think I’ve only bought 1 or 2 new blades needed for projects. I keep waiting for the rest to turn up at GS, eventually, usually right after I buy one retail.

Here's my small hauls for the weekend.
Estate sale Friday, had to run an errand over the hill, this was only 1 exit away. Not my favorite vendor, he runs hot and cold on prices. Grabbed 5 chisels and gouges, all decent brands, 2x Dunlap chisels, 1/2" and 1", 2x Stubai gouges, currently soaking in the evaporust, #6 & #9 sweeps, and a Berg 1/4" chisel, always a good day when you find one of these. I also found 2 folding chest handles, painted OD green, but not certain where they were used. And a rolling cart, built of 3/4" plywood base, 2x risers, and a 1/2" top. I think the PO used them as a drawer for tubs of hardware. The casters are held on with tiny Tek screws, so that will need to be updated. This might be the base for my storage drawer set up of 3x 4d wide x 10d tall Akro Mills organizers

PXL_20211001_220316688-L.jpg

Saturday's haul was a little disappointing, left behind a nice small SK box that they wanted $20 for, father son team, and son was embarrassed to tell me the $20 price for Dad's item. Rest of the stuff was reasonable. Unnmaed Auger bit, chest lid stay, Thorsen 10" by 3/8" drive extension, Adjustable clamp, Diamalloy S56 diagonal cutters, small phillips driver w wood handle, and a pair of folding scissors, with a bit of a nick in the blades near the tip. thought it was just an accumulation of junk, but there is a nick, in both blades.

PXL_20211002_181146047-XL.jpg

And I mentioned the gouges in Evaporust above. I managed to clean most of them, but the inside of the bowl of the gouge was just too pitted, so into the bath the went. Trying to not mess with the handles, I used this setup to minimize the volume required. The red one behind it is for long skinny things, like wrenches. Tipped when needed to keep the volume low. Going to pull them out right after lunch, I gotta go make a pizza right now.

Shout out to Catfishdan, love that stack of 4 drawer boxes, very nice.

Best weekend for sales in a while, a break in the humidity down here made a big difference!
Parker made No. 163 1/2 , wheelbarrow tire and rim, multi tool, and tape measure .
A small wood clamp (made on Essex St ? havnt researched this one), curved metal tool (no idea what this is for), PVC cutter and an Kraeuter #212 (no idea what this is for!), 2 Beasley corner clamps, Roberts trimmer, Handy Andy metal tool box , a Goodall Pratt valve seat grinder(I think) and a GoodPratt hacksaw with the neat front grip but a shop made rear (might scavge a handle from another saw), old old cast iron cornbread mold and a Millers Falls, Wilton and Craftsman clamp on vises.
And... some metal tip lawn darts !! May bring these to the next Florida Chapter meet up and see who gets hurt !

I'm usually suspicious of anything stamped twice as a maker's mark. I expect that to be an owner's mark. "F Heydt" turns up as a (Fred or Frederick Heydt) hardware business at 137 Essex Street, in an 1886 NY City directory. What is the inverted name?

wow, never heard of that type, sounds fun. Serious workhorse pair?
Yeah, I never saw anything like that. The ball bearing rides in a leaf spring, keeping the blades together. It is kind of unnecessary, since the firm grip one learns as a child accomplishes the same effect. BF1FE184-C85A-4516-A377-20EBB2C5D92C.jpegBut shape of the handle encourages a fingertip-only grip, so you actually do need the spring-assist. I don’t know enough about scissors to tell if they are meant for paper, cloth, or hair.

Put two of them on a straight stick, make a giant compass or divider. I have some with pencils on one side, this one can swap a wooden pencil in. Other sets have two metal points, can scratch a line, in wood, or Dykem on metal, or directly on metal.
Thanks for the info. It looks much better now as do some of my other Friday finds. I couldn’t find a makers mark on it.

Anyone knows if a US-spec 115V Drill Doctor 750X that was accidentally plugged into 230V can be easily repaired? I see there are suppliers of a so-called 230V "filter" for these machines. There was no smoke, only a brief flash from the switch. I am hoping this "filter" has just blown and could be replaced?

Could that be for left handers? Holding normal scissors with the left hand is really hard.

Ran into a member at a estate sale yesterday. Yep, it’s Three Bay,
I have no idea what you're talking about. There is no person in that photo who comes anything close to what I imagine 3baygarage looks like!!! Unless he's like 30 years younger than I thought! :yikes:
Candid photos? That’s creepier than my dream involving you, the weird dog, and the giant meat hock.
HAHA.

No. No it's not...

Only one find at the swap meet this morning. A nice 4 drawer organizer to add to my stack. I keep all my spare 1/4” drive stuff in them.

Very nice. Really love that Weatherhead one on the bottom!

Not the usual type of tools discussed here, but I found this at the local thrift store for $29.99. Very nice condition and with the necessary assessories.

usually if ground for hair, they will have lite serrations on one or both cutting bezels, about 50 per inch. That’s the best I know about them, I need to learn cloth soon, the GF has some that will need touch up soon.

cool shears tho. Finger tip makes me think hair grooming.

With a bit of a story in there. Rufus Bliss & Co was around from 1845 - 1850, when Rufus left, but the Company kept on without him, using his name. In 1917, J.W. O'Neil Jr. advertised as successor to the R. Bliss Mfg. Co. and maker of Bliss hand screws. Some time in between those dates, the guys were using both & Company, and Mfg. The guys were E.R. Clark and A.C. Bullock. (All of the above from the DAT, Directory of American Toolmakers, pre 1900 stuff). I think the F Heydt pins it down really tight, he only shows up on Essex for a year or three. Nice get.

Come on, we all think we’re 30 years younger than we are. 3bay just controls it better. He has a portrait hidden in his attic maybe?

Nice work all, here's my running around take from the last few days...

First stop was a hoarder house, a big one in a nice suburb. It was packed with stuff and people but I dug a few things up. Up top are a P&C hacksaw and a few hammers, a couple of which are Craftsman. Big stack of Craftsman combos, long C breaker bar, and big Plomb combo are the middle. Top left are sockets, a few Craftsman, Blackhawk, an SK or two. On the right are a SK and Snap on wrenches and an SK breaker. This batch was $10.

IMG_3377.jpg

Next was an estate sale where the tool guy knew what it all was and had it priced about as high as I was willing to pay. I opted to pay up for a couple pieces I liked and the guy gave me a few bucks off of some smaller stuff. $20 for this batch, most of which is in the Proto LA wrenches.

IMG_3371.jpg

This sale was a gnarly hoarder house that had been abandoned and squatted in. Garbage everywhere. Lots of stuff too though. I only had a bit of time so I quickly dug through 3 different outbuildings to find this. $10, at least a couple of the hammers are craftsman (Edit: just noticed I posted the cross pein and maybe another hammer twice, sorry!) and the plane is salvageable. The wrenches are pretty rough, I found the little Plomb/Proto combo early which resulted in me spending more time there than I would have otherwise. Little screwdriver is Millers Falls, can't remember much about the little wrenches or the Stanley bevel at the moment.

IMG_3372.jpg

This one was my favorite sale of the weekend, I walked up to a few tools and was poking around when the guy running the sale came out and asked me what I was looking for. Got any old wrenches? "Hell yeah I do!" he says, invites me into his garage and lets me dig through his wrench drawer. He was a really cool guy, rebuilds old guitar amps and was an electrician on large ships. I could have bought more but I was trying to restrain myself. I tried to grab all the Blue point I could find as well as the couple pieces of Plomb, and a Proto LA with the brand ground off.

One thing I left behind that I wish I had taken a picture of was a cool old Bridgeport pipe threader in an old wood box.

This stuff is from an estate sale, quite a bit of people were looking at the tools but I picked this stuff up as soon as I saw it. I think it was 6 bucks. The box turns out to be an Indestro, the sockets are a combo of Duro/Indestro and SK, there's also a Plomb wobbler and combo, plus Craftsman extension and wobbler. The bigger extension and T bar don't have clear markings but I imagine they'll clean up.

Finally, had a good experience with a fellow picker. Went up north to a day old sale and wished I had been there a day earlier. A guy had pretty well cleared out most of the good tools but there was so much stuff everywhere I wasn't sure which piles were which. Long story short I noticed a Plomb wrench in a big pile and asked him if he wanted to flip it. He gave it to me for the price he paid despite my offer to pay more...pretty nice of him!

The monthly flea market was pretty slow today. Not many vendors, and not many shoppers, either. I blame it on the nice day. Sunny and dry, with no wind. Started out a little cool, but warmed up to shirt-sleeves by 9AM. I think everyone was taking advantage of the nice weather to do outdoor activities before the rain sets in.

I have one vendor that claims to not be adding new stuff, but every month I find new stuff in his inventory. I'm pretty thorough in searching through it, so he must be adding things. This time the new stuff were some sockets, but on my second pass through on my way out, I dug through a box that was under the table and found a P&C combo and the Bonney spinner. Three sockets, a long metric Allen hex key set with ball ends, the combo and the spinner set me back $2.50.

Another vendor had some older wrenches on display. I picked out a Proto LA long 1/2" combo and a pair of 231 ignition pliers for $2.00.

A vendor who is usually way overpriced had the P&C N-90 DBE at his usual price level. He came down to an affordable price when I showed interest in it. Still more than I like to pay, but it fills a big hole in my N- series set.

Finally, another vendor had the P&C 4000 wheel puller set and the 4042 battery terminal puller. I paid $20.00 for them.

The Duro/Indestro marked D-I 1/2” drive set was made with several markings during WW2. I‘ve accumulated a few versions. The unmarked extension is S-K.

Thanks Don, I had a feeling you might know something about that Indestro box! Pretty sure I have the ratchet already, I’ll see how close I can get to cobbling together a complete set.
