2021 Garage Sale Thread

Hit three sales today and found a little at each one. The first lured me in with photos of what appeared to be a large red Proto cantilever box and a Craftsman Block grinder. The toolbox turned out to be a nice Duplex, but I've been trying to be more selective about toolboxes and at $60 it was easy to leave. The grinder was 1/3hp but was connected to a large and rough home-made stand that included an old G.E. electric motor with a wire wheel on its axle. They wouldn't separate the grinder and at $140, it too, was easy to walk away from. I came away with only the fiber wheel, Blackhawk combo and the Eagle "Double Locking" padlock--no key. I may go back Sunday to check on the grinder.



Second sale was a barn sale and looked promising but the surviving family swooped in during the wee hours before the sale and carted off a lot of the good stuff--including most of the Snap-on tools. I still found onesies and twosies as pictured, along with a Thorsen 77MC 1/4" ratchet and universal. The Kawasaki DOE might pay for a good chunk of today's haul.



Scrounging through several bins at the third sale turned up most of an Action 3/8" set, including the 77JA open tooth ratchet--with cover! The 5/8" deep socket is a Thorsen. Also found an Indestro 5/8" deep and an Indestro Super 4" adjustable--I just can't help myself from picking these little guys up. Just under $20 for the day.

Well, there were a couple toos in there that I was interested in, a Starrett hook ruler and a curved spokeshave with a box of the special bits for it.

That is a leather worker’s, usually shoes, shave. There are many weird shapes used in leather working, never found one at a price I could afford to see how they work on wood. But usually leather requires super sharp, so hope those bit are nasty sharp.

I'll say! Just the Plomb midget stuff and the camping utensils, but the pliers are very unusual. I'm supposing that the S&H is Smith & Hemenway, and I have a small collection, some branded RED DEVIL, some S&H Co., but I have never seen that fanciful "S&H" monograph on the grips before.

You didn't even mention the two things that caught my eye: the antique Mickey Mouse wingnut and the V-Block clamp. V-blocks are funny for me. Like shoes in the middle of the road, I only ever seem to find one at a time. In 12 years I have never come home with a pair. And almost never with their clamps.

The only sale on Craigslist that looked worthwhile was an estate sale in Mill Valley, CA. Unfortunately, all of the tools had been stored outside in a backyard workshop open to the elements. There was what looked like a large tray of Craftsman VV USA made tools, all with enough rust to convince me to leave them behind. We did find some interesting tools many of which are in the evaporust overnight. Had I realized that prices were going to be so low, I might have grabbed a few more rusty treasures.

Here is what we brought home.
Some Powr-Kraft tools badly in need of cleaning.
The Craftsman nutdrivers cleaned up pretty well.
As did the Powr-Kraft ignition wrenches.

Hopefully, some more of the tools will be worthwhile after cleaning. I’ll find out later today.

Hello all. I’ve participated once or twice in the GS threads, but hope to ramp it up a bunch.
Friday the 22’nd will be my last shift of a 33 year fire service career.
I‘m in a corner of the PNW swimming with P&C and Thorsen, with nary a Cornwall or Herbrand in sight. My particular GS targets are Proto/Plomb/P&C, Snap On, Axes, Anvils, Vises, Consumables, and tools that are ridiculously oversized by modern non-industrial needs. I don’t pick to flip, but I will pick metals to recycle at a profit. My grail, at this point, is the P&C pebble 4-way lug wrench.

Todays tiny haul is a 16” Crescent and a 28” Hitco screwdriver, for garage defense i guess.

Excellent eye! No, but I’ll give you the pass; it’s a No40, seen on p9 of the 1886 catalog. $5.50 back then, but I paid nearly 4x that.
Or rather, it’s parts of a No40. The bolt and lever are long gone from the track in the bottom, as well as the removeable swivel jaw. And the dynamic (back) jaw has most of its grip broken off where it wraps around the slide, something I failed to note before making my offer.
Ah, well, I guess it’s a start to a new project. The screw and static/base are very solid.

I had a Great First Stop, and the rest was a burn except for the very last TOO. I seemed to be the first serious "tool guy" in the garage of a living estate sale, adn the guy had LOTS of tools!

I was shocked to see the wrench box listed at 15c Each! and the pliers adjustable at 75c each! Total came to $12.50!

A grind off, A Pebble DBE, a set of Blue Point Supremes (one cut), 2 Long C, 3 Tru Fit, and a MAC:


2 Duro Crome/Indestro, 4 no-names, 2 metrics (Neon? and Dowidat), CL 420's, PS&W gas, and a No-mane multi tool.

The "big" knife is a Camelus "Sword Brand", and the Swiss Army; a tape refill, 2 Starrett punches, and a Truth Punch.

I'm liking the Camelus despite the cheap scales it has. thin blade, good steel, sharp and well cared for, despite obvious extensive use.


NOS B&D 7=1/4" panel saw adn a pack of center adapters, an aluminum bottle capper, a steamer basket (need a new one in camping) and a 2" Vacuum gauge (hard to find this size, I've been looking!)


the "Big" mallet is to Scale the Smaller - A Stanley 592 - the "Big" one was my smallest till today!



And from the TOO for a couple of bucks: Small file handle (Needed one this size recently) 2 SK Wayne 1/4" combos, and an SK 1/2" Deep

Went to the second day of a sale I couldn't get to yesterday. Not much in the way of interesting tools but found this big Giller box in near mint condition--even the bottom is almost pristine. I'm not much of a Giller collector but who could leave that beautiful box behind--especially for only $6.50! I'm guessing it supported a 3/4" or 1" socket set but would be happy to hear other's opinions--especially if anyone has any documentation of what it might have contained. The box measures 23 x 8.25 x 3.50 inches.

The ubiquitous 8' tape measure, this one with Millers Falls branding, was $1.50.

Old Radar, I’ve often come across a smaller version of that Giller box with 1/2” drive sets inside, I’d tend to agree with your guess of a 3/4” drive socket set.
To me, Giller=Vietnam War, but that’s from my own collecting experiences maybe.

ctual--The "Old Original" is a saw set for setting the angle of teeth on a hand saw. From what I saw on the net, others have interpreted the model number as I.M.O. Can't help you on manufacturer.

i did pretty well at two sales toady. At the first, there was lots of OLD woodworking and machinist tools. Example: a 1950's era Delta drill press and belt sander, a Bridgeport lathe, and plenty more. Great stuff, but I don't have the space for more just now. I did buy a nice cast iron stand made by Valley Electric Co. of St. Louis. There isn't much information about the company online, but it looks like they disappeared around 1942. They changed their name from "Vally Electric Co." to "Valley Electric Corp." in 1938, so the stand almost certainly pre-dates that. It should make a nice grinder stand.

The other items were a no-name regulator/filter, a transfer punch set (that's sawdust, not rust on the tips), a Proto 1/2" ratchet which looks rather ugly, but actually works nicely, and a Williams SuperRachet. The "wrench-handle" was made by someone who appears to have been just learning to weld, but I can clean it up and find a use for it.

The other stuff I purchased separately at Jacktown this morning.
I’ve seen halves of 3/4” Pony pipe clamps, but finally found a whole. Plomb LA long socket, Bell Systen linemans wrench, Vulcan stamped wrench, Forsberg screwdriver, 3 Stanley wood-handle screwdrivers (one is PatPending, two are PatNo), unbranded NewBritains hexdr socket on a hex uni, 8” plain steel CeeTee slipjoints, Bonney ULapprvd pocket screwdriver, T12 Bonney socket, MF 1/32” nailset, Bonney softface hammer (escaped the photo, as did an LSStarrett bevel minus awl), file handle.
I’m pleased that the 1/2sq L-driver fits my orphan Duro handle.

The C’man crowntop carry box paint was so shiny under the lid, and the badge so unscratched, I forgive the fasteners’ rust. I have shelves at home that fit two of this model side-by-side, so I keep home repair stuff sorted in them. This is an upgrade to one of them.
This one looks like it was used for some light bathroom work through the seventies, and retired circa 1980. Latex tub caulk, wow. Hechingers. I actually think the stencil letters sold this to me.
New fun game, to figure out what word or name they were used to make with a black marker…
And the rest of the contents, minus dirt. Some will find use.

After dragging that around and depositing in my car, I met up with GJer bryanrj, who last posted on this thread in June, I think. We sat on a bench, watching a sawmill demonstration and chatted over Bonney, Spintite & SK while a balcksmith worked behind us and steam tractors chugged (occasionally tooting) around the pathway.
We may cross paths again tomorrow at Jake’s. I had thought I would stop at a couple yard sales and the Blue Ridge flea afterwards, but opted to head home and get a coupke other things done before the rain.

Some days go wonderfully, some... Not so much. It seems that every time I turned around something wasn't working out for me. Either I went to the wrong stop first, didn't have enough money on me, an ATM wouldn't work when I was far from another, and so on. So, a lot of miles and not much to show for it. I only found something at one sale:

A nice wooden box of decent size, probably for an art easel would be my guess, a nice reel in the box, and a Cornwell wrench roll. $11.25 and she was very clear about the .25.

Feeling a bit discouraged, I stopped at the used bookstore and picked up a couple Maigret anthologies and a nice older book on model railroading (1938).

I hear ya Beemer, I spent all afternoon driving around today with very little to show for it. Went to a number of sales that advertised tools but when you walk in the garage you know at first glance that there’s not going to be much worth buying.

Here are a few pickups from yesterday, I took the afternoon off and was surprised to see these pieces left behind in a very picked over garage. $8 for the stuff in the pic.

The two big pieces won’t even fit in my Evaporust tub, they are a P&C DBE and a long 1/2” Snap on extension. A couple Plomb DOEs and a few other pieces that need rust removal before I can identify them.

It is a Credo. Not exactly a household name but they may have made the Craftsman ones. I spent the afternoon cleaning up yesterday’s rusty finds.

I think a buddy of mine bought the Delta belt sander. He's got it in pieces, found a few needed repairs. Looks like a fun project. I'm hoping to get up there in the morning.

$20 bottom box. Nice and straight but will need a repaint.
