Just to re-emphasize, because it cannot apparently be emphasized enough, it's not my approach. I'm simply describing the way it has always been done.

Lugz is right that process, other than the second year host I think, is exactly how it evolved (2nd year Host volunteered IIR?)

For POTY, I think BMW's name Host or not MUST be in the lineup! Last year was extremely close, and no one was more surprised than I that I was in the running, much less that I won!. BMW was who I expected to win. Hes been posting great stuff all year and deserves a shot!

I've seen those chromed craftsman chisels at the fleas from time to time. The Craftsman ones tend to be even more beat to death than your average bottom of the toolbox old chisel. Saw one just on Sunday that had been hammered directly on the socket until there wasn't much of a socket left. Since the only manufacturer of decent chisels with chrome plating that I know about is Greenlee, I've wondered if that is where Sears got them. But, that is pure speculation.

I'm mostly a cheerleader for all of you guys who actually run out and find all the cool stuff, LOL.

That is actually one of the more important qualities of a good host. It would certainly be unusual that you're not an avid picker yourself, but not at all a deal breaker. Might even be interesting. And on the plus side, you wouldn't have to worry about having a great year and not being eligible for Picker of the Year, which has been a bit of a Murphy's Law/Alanis Morrisette scenario since 2018! Recusal is part of the job description.

OK, now that I am back from a day at the pharmacist, dentist, and barber, I can firmly say that we will use the method remembered by the majority here, that I apparently and utter brainfarted on. No feelings are hurt, no toes have been stepped on, the only damage done is that people who have already voted will have to vote again! (remember when I said, "vote early, vote often"? Ha, you thought I was kidding!)

I think it's more than pop culture. The best leaders care about their people. As soon as they lose sight of that, failure usually IS the only option. I personally believe that humility is a critical part of being a good leader (not everyone agrees, of course). Not sure if/how that applies to this thread, of course (it's late)...


BTW, even though I missed the technicality the first time, that was one of the funniest uses of "vote early, vote often" I've ever heard, Beemer!

Nice haul RTM. Have you been able to date those Disston saws?

The D8 thumbhole 4 TPI rip medallion is a Disston & Sons Philada, which puts it at 1896-1917, slightly newer than my current 6TPI user, and coarser, so it should be a real beast once it is sharpened up.

The D15 medallion is a Disston USA, with straight upright sides, so 1955 - 1990. Based on the slightly comfortable handle and decent etch, I am hoping its on the earlier side. It was older and nicer than the other 2 I left behind.

RTM—I’m trying to see through the muddy waters concerning your D-15 saw.

Going backward through your posts you say “The D15 medallion is a Disston USA, with straight upright sides, so 1955 – 1990.” If you mean the medallion’s profile has a vertical interior wall that then crests and slopes smoothly to the outer edge; that medallion was produced from 1940 to 1947. The ’55-’90 medallion has flat inner sides that angle outward at 45ish degrees. The central keystone is surrounded by a ring of open circles. This is the ubiquitous HK Porter medallion and I doubt seriously if it and a D-15 ever crossed paths.

Next you cite a “decent etch”. A picture of this would go a long way to help identify the model and year.

The saw handle pictured in your original post looks like a D-15, but according to The Disstonian Institute, the D-15 & 115 handles were made of rosewood except during the war years when they switched to walnut (also a dark wood) and then to a laminate until the supply of rosewood was re-established. Your handle is not rosewood. If it is NOT a laminate, I think it is a D-23. The Institute notes for the D-23 that “Earlier handles are applewood. Shortly after WWII, the handles were changed to unidentified hardwoods with a lacquer colored to look like applewood. The species of some handles appears to be beech, others cherry or birch.” All light-colored woods. Regarding the D-23 carving, they say: “The carving is a little more extensive on the pre-1947 saws, with extra wheat carving above the medallion.” Yours has this extra carving above the medallion. If your medallion is as I described above, I would say it’s a good bet that you have a 1940-1947 D-23 and not a D-15.

Hit an estate sale out in the Hill Country this morning. Enjoyable morning for pickin'. First item I nabbed was a Columbian 604-M3 vise. A full gallon each of acetone & mineral spirits. The remaining tools: Klein long-nose pliers & diagonal cutters, Disston 50' Super Chief tape in great cosmetic & working condition, deep socket carrier, Craftsman -V- breaker bar w/ Indestro 2" ext, Craftsman 1/4" ratchets (2), Plomb 7/8" combo that looks like it was spray painted silver, Ford ratcheting wrench 5-Z-829, Snap-On 3/8" combo, Craftsman 1/4" -VV- ext, Walden 3117 1/4" breaker bar, Craftsman -V- 1/4" & Husky slide bar handles and a Craftsman 4-pc chisel set. I should have passed on the more recent Craftsman 1/4" ratchet. Didn't know these were Asian made but at $2 no big deal.

I’m not sure if I’ll use the blades but for $10 I couldn’t say no.

In general, any Signal Corps part number with a "/U" suffix is postwar.

Hmm. Are they Schollhorn BERNARD? Or Sargent BERNARD? I'm not sure I've ever seen chromed Schollhorn pliers, intact or peeling. They were either nickel or blued.

A sniff test on the tank might tell you more, quicker? Alcohol, White gas, or even Kero are possible

I ran to an estate sale this morning in the deep woods. Everything had been sitting neglected in a wet shop for years but I managed to find an Atlas 6" lathe for $150. Everything works but the half nut for threading is frozen. Soaking in Kroil for now. Also an arbor press for $10 and a variac for $5. On the way home I stopped at a popup sale and found a Mini Hang up vac for $5. I had one that I inherited from my father, but after my wife used it, she confiscated it.

The Craigslist ad mentioned tools but when we arrived the seller apologized and said he didn’t have time to put them out. I did some polite but major league whining and he finally took pity on me and hauled them out.

Nice score on the Atlas Seber. That one is called a mk2 if I remember right. I am not sure if that makes a difference of half nuts, but it does have the attached motor.

I’ve been relegated to eBay, probably until spring, but I’m still making frugal and frivolous progress. Latest to arrive is a Snap on TM 11/32 E dated socket for my slowly growing 1944 set, and a Snap on 5/8 flare nut combo to add to my user set.

I'm going to my little brother's surprise 60th birthday party tomorrow night, but nobody in the family knows I am showing up all decked out in 1961 fashion, including an oversize newsboy hat, Haggar plaid slacks, striped shirt, flowery neck scarf, Chukka boots, a green leather jacket, one of my leather-clad smoking pipes tucked into the pocket, and a Vote for Nixon button - ALL of it from a flea market. His presents are a Tona socket set, Made in Czechslovakia (our heritage), found at a flea market, and an orange hunting/ball cap from Cabela's with an embroidered "[Since 1961]" patch. I sewed a "[PAUL]" patch over the embroidered "Cabela's" and pheasant. Also from a flea market. (Don't be surprised if I go full hermit or Nomadland and start doing ALL my shopping there!) It's going to be off the hook, as the kids say. Best of all, my 27-year-old son is the designated driver.

ok, I have to admit I really just phoned that one in. As it was a USA, and thus fairly late in the genealogy, didn’t think much of it. I swore I saw a 5 on the etch / label on the blade, saw the bolt pattern matched, agreed and moved on.

but since you are interested, I will bring it in the house later, and do it right, with a magnifier, caliper and more pix.

Anywhoo, I hit four sales yesterday, the first of which I would have missed as it was only listed on a service I don't really use, but I was tipped of by a friend. It was a couple of old bikers clearing out what they don't really need, and I picked up the following:

I picked up a small canvas bag that contained the handful of Plomb 1/4" sockets and a Proto LA ratchet, Snap-on 11/32" nut driver, BOG, Mossberg, Vogel, and Herbrand ratchets for an even $20. Nice guys, and I may swing by again today.

The next sale was out in the country, didn't look too promising, but was kinda in the same area as the first one, so I swung by. Big fat zero. So, on to the next one, which was pricy, but there was a lot of good stuff, and I went over budget:

Stanley 80 that I was able to talk them down on as it is missing the blade (which I have a whole box of), and a Stearns dowl cutter. Also, I picked up a reprint of Stanley catalog #102



But the cream of the crop was this

A framed and glassed South Bend decimal equivalent chart. This will go nicely in my office.

Two Ho-Hums, one Special, and one Very Special in today's small haul (Lugz 2021_75).



- Kraeuter combination slip joints with a stylish, art deco flair on the shoulder I have never seen before

- GMTK-spec carbon scrapers are not rare, and I have found several over the years, but I have never seen a Herbrand before

- The hinge handle is a Plomb WF-37.

- The leather pouch is a Schrader. It's empty (but I sure know and better yet have what goes in it) and the stitching is loose (but I can mend it) and it's probably one of my personal best finds of the year. Also a great example of why I love flea markets with lots of house liquidators. Not only do they not have the time or inclination to know all the merchandise in their loads, with dozens of people pawing through everything or asking for prices, they don't have the time or inclination to look at the marking on the snap of a little innocuous leather pouch, especially when it's presented to them with a bunch of other red herring dollar items (not shown)!

BMW, you **** on the Vogle ratchet - Guys that is a 1/2"X 3/8" drive (two sides) in a long handle 3/8 Proto frame!. hard to find, and pricey when you do! - -is the gear intact? the long handle is hard on the gears -especially using the bigger 1/2" sockets..

I also like that framed decimal chart! White on black looks cool and its easy to read!

Lugz I know what you mean on the odd sheath! I've gotten lucky a time or three!

Slow here (One stop), but a few things: More than I usually spend, but Its better and harder to find stuff than usual also! Got one more Stop that I bypassed as it was WAY over crowded!

A Kennedy 26" Mid machinists box, 2 drawers, WITH a key! I've wanted one for a while for under the 11 drawer...

Two 4-1/2" and Two 3" Kant Twist clamps, and the hole de-burring spinner was thrown in with the box.

OK went back to the passed Estate sale, and yes, somewhat picked over, not not completely (It didn't look it have a great selection to begin with), NOT shown (still in the rig) a lightweight folding Wheel chair for my Mom (by her request...)

And: Sandvik hacksaw (these are really nice frames) A Plvmb 5/8 (Plain, of pebbles, USA not LA) and a SO impact swivel, adapter, no date code, but seems to be an older design with that retention collar? P/N IMBF 80D -No luck on Google or Eprey for more info (only one on Eprey completed...)
