Beautiful weather, just a great weekend.
2 clean clamp on vises, a Littlestown and one I havnt deciphered the name of yet. Small red plane came with them.
A parts bin for $5 which might make a small dent in my organizational dreams. And a Lodgr cast iron skillet that needs a little attention. A North Bros chain drill and small cast iron pot the seller assured me has not had lead melted in it, likely will teat to be sure. A croquet set and some cast iron barn trolleys or pulleys . Ah, and a Stanley circular plane, very cool.

Saturday morning hour and a half journey into New Jersey for an estate sale netted me all these! Some Snap-on sockets and one 15mm combo wrench. Bunch of SK and Williams and some Craftsman. Three compression testers (Mac, Snap-on and no-name), Craftsman tri-wing ratchet (sure is loud), Cman V-selector, SK and a Snap-on 3/8 dr breaker bar with female 3/8dr in the handle base.

Rick, one of the breakers has the drive pocket for using it as an extension; good find!

Edit, and If I had finished reading its the 3/8 SO! even better! The 3/8 are harder to find in 3/8 IMO!

The construction details look identical to the LittCo, making me think it could be a retail house-brand, but it IS hard to make out what. “P” maybe, and a long-underlining “A” I think, maybe an apostrophe near the end?

Here is my haul from the weekend. We (7 buddies and I) went to a big Antiques Flea Market (Alameda Point for the locals), and scored a few things. My haul included a Wilton Shop-King 635, 5", with the pipe jaws, only real damage is the pivot lock sliding rod is frozen. Will probably have to disassemble it to remove the lock without damage, then dunk that in evaporust. Everything else looks like Barn Find dirt. Also ran into a guy liquidating a machine shop, and unfortunately he knew what he had. HE pulled the two Albrecht chucks out of my first pile, said $200. I whittle the pile down some once I got his prices, but afterwards, regret set in, I should have kept where I was.
Lots of fun machinist stuff, including 2 pairs of telescoping gauges in the largest 2 sizes, a bunch of lock screws for combo squares, hermaphrodite calipers, V block, extra clamps for V blocks, a rule joiner, and a Starrett 245 combo thickness gauge, wire gauge, and feeler gauge. Also a Moore ad Wright center finder, 830-A hole size finder, and a tiny Jacobs chuck. Nothing was a steal, but much better than an auction I watched close early Saturday morning, everything went 2-3x my bottom feeder pricing. And a vintage bottle of Pelikan Ultramarine Blue ink.

PXL_20211206_001335406-X2.jpg

This is the haul from our whole group, one guy brought honey for everyone. Fresh and local, doesn't get much better than that. The guys scored punches, ratchets, more machinist tools, a Roper Whitney #5 Jr punch set, complete in a metal box, etc

Thanks Gentlemen! Although...
......

When I degreased the main nut and got a good look inside is when the real disappointment/happiness hit me. All except the front inch and a half of the threads are just--gone!

I cannot imagine how that would happen. It can't be rust--there are some sharp edges that the shear forces left. I would think someone used a cheater bar on it but how would the front threads escape damage?

...........

26 Nov 21-1-2b.jpg 26 Nov 21-1-2a.jpg 26 Nov 21-1-2.jpg

Early vises did not have machined threads inside the 'screw box'. There was a coil of material brazed into the inside of the box. Picture a helicoil brazed inside of a tube. Sometimes the braze failed and the 'threads' simply broke out or fell out.

Thanks leg! Looking at my screw box interior, it seems that it may have had the material brazed all the way to the end, but I still cannot imagine an event that would cause the back part of the threads to fail but leave the front intact. Is it possible that the coil was only brazed on the front portion and is still as whole as it ever was? I just don't know enough about these vises to guess.

My latest auction site grab finally showed up. Snap on TM-4-E. Unfortunately it does have a cracked handle that I initially didn’t notice before I hit the buy button, but it was priced right compared to the other ones that have been listed forever and its still tight.

Quick story about last night: Everyone was supposed to be there (the Rec Room of the Conshohocken Brewing Company in Phoenixville, PA, by the way - great place!) by 5:45, my brother and SIL arriving at 6:15. We left the house at 3:45 and were 20 minutes into a 2-hour trip when it struck me that I forgot the gift! After a few minutes of debate and calculations, I turned around and went back for it, now needing to make up 40 minutes. I Mario Andrettied my way across the state and up the PA turnpike and off at Rt 29 and we're pulling into downtown Phoenixville at 6:09 as my nephew is texting my son for an ETA and warning me not to blow it because my brother and his mom are probably looking for parking somewhere, too. So, I drop my son off, grab my phone, and I text my nephew, "No worries. I'm in disguise!" He texts back, "???!!! LOL" I find parking and make my way warily to the Rec Room on the sidewalk and a few minutes later, just a few minutes ahead of my brother and SIL as it turns out, I walk up the steps and turn the corner into a room of normally-clad group of family and friends all hushed and waiting for the big "surprise" moment. NOBODY recognized me at first. And EVERYBODY went berserk when they did.

Lol, nice. I can see you pulling the "Barry" from Storage Wars and showing up to the flea market in different disguises to fool the vendors.

I don't watch that show, but I can just imagine. That's hilarious. Seriously, it wouldn't work though. Everyone is very familiar with each other, by voice, mannerisms, and of course, tool predilections. :)

Believe it or not, I do know guys who intentionally dress ratty so they don't look like they have money. Which I don't think has much merit. In my experience, the buyer's potential tax bracket status has very little to do with price. I'm not saying vendors don't "size up" buyers. They can spot an easy mark. I just don't think attire has much to do with it. I'm kind of a bummy dresser, anyway (I like old things, regardless how faded, frayed, worn out and holey, and it takes me a long time to get rid of something, and when I do, it's three lifetimes past suitability for GoodWill), so I guess I'm covered just in case I'm wrong. :)

You're not missing much. Barry is the only one worth watching, IMHO. The rest are just too predictable, LOL...

As for your personal wardrobe description, I need to remember that! I feel the same way, otherwise I'm not getting my money's worth!

While I won't drive something that's unsafe of banged up, my attitude towards vehicles is similar. I don't want a loan, don't need to drive new (or new-ish) cars to make myself feel better, and if I don't get to 300K, I get very upset.

First of two sales was a bust but the second was not bad. $10 for everything.

First thing I found was the Duro-Chrome 4550 hinge handle. The Duro-Chrome sockets were mixed in a pile of other sockets that I sorted through to make sure I didn't miss any. Obviously a partial set but I haven't yet found what set they may have been part of. The sets I've seen so far on archive.org don't have 12pt sockets along with 4pts. One bonus is that I found a D-I 3/8dr partial set a few weeks ago that had a tommy bar that fits the 4550.

09 Dec 21-1.jpg

Remaining items:
--Two S-K 1/4d sockets
--Four CM =v= sockets and one BE
--Challenger 1066, 1/4d extension
--ChromeXQuality 1/2d 11/16 socket
--Millers Falls 801, 1/32 nail set
--Proto ® 996, 6"Combo Square--interestingly the ® is below and between the P & R. Haven't seen that before.
--Starrett No. 310 rule

Along with Lugz's commentary on dressing for success at fleas, that's why I drive my 24 year old dull Acura sedan to estate sales instead of my shiny 33 year old Toyota Supra.

Well here's Barry, and him in disguise. I remember the episode where he was all done up as an old lady in a wheelchair. I think he was bidding the heck out of something and the crowd was like Huh? It was hilarious.

The other one I think he was dressed kind of ratty but they knew it was him. It's been a while.

Got to love Barry. I miss the good old days, dont watch anymore.

Finally got out of the office and off the oil truck to do what I was actually hired to do and in my travels I found an estate sale. Lot of tools but not much quality and what was quality was priced way high. They admittedly held back some premium stuff that they want to eBay. I discussed the advantages of selling to me and I think when I go back for the final day I might be able to convince them. I was able to get out of there with an SK 3/8 ratchet and a little Blue Point ball peen for $13.

There were only two likely estate sales listed and we opted for this one in Alamo, CA about a half hour from home. I know from experience that this estate sale company is on the more expensive side so I left a few tools there that I otherwise would have grabbed.

Took a bit of time off to hit a few sales, first day prices so I spent a bit but got some interesting stuff for $50:

First off are the planes, the wooden one has an Ohio Tool Co iron, it's in really nice shape. A friend was looking for one as he remembers his dad using one so I figured I'd grab it. The Bailey 5 1/2 also seems to be in good shape other than the rust, really hoping I don't find any cracks in this one!

IMG_3530.jpg

Next are a few random pieces, a couple of file cards, Starrett dividers and rule, Challenger combo, Proto 1150 DBE, and an interesting old Disston that seems to be a saw on one side and a knife on the other? Would appreciate if anyone knows any more about it.

IMG_3531.jpg

Finally some wrenches, starting at top are Barcalo DOE, Williams combo, Bonney DOE, Hinsdale DOE, the offset DBE is marked Super Hex. I'm not familiar with that one or the next DOE which I think is marked OTC (Owatonna? Ohio Tool? Not sure). Then there are a few Craftsman pre V pieces, a New Britain combo, and a tiny hammer. Oh and the nozzle which is a cool one, marked BostoN.

Haha. I did not. And I also drove mindlessly right past the Tractor Supply, forgetting I need more Evaporust.

These aren't uncommon, and they grow on trees in the PNW, but it's just bizarre to one fell swoop this many, twice, two weeks apart, and have no dupes.

You'd be surprised how many DE, MD, PA, NY, CT, and even VT plates we get. The fleas have always been famous here. Original industrial state with the highest population density (1,200 people per square mile) and a lot of style and attitude will do that. That's alot of houses and garages with antique and vintage stuff in them.
Lugz, they don’t grow on trees here, they fall out of the sky like raindrops😂. I may have a few spare combos if you are looking for some?

Hey, I had an’88 as well. My favorite car I have ever owned. Bright red with gray leather interior. 5 spd. Love that car!

I hit two estate sales today, along with going by the restore.
One estate sale was a dead end, but the second was quite nice:
51739248480_01c1ae99a0_c.jpg
Stanley #3, series 12 Sweatheart, and an unused set of Stanley Russell Jennings bits. $18

After that, I hit the Restore on the way home (after buying a Xmas tree), picking up the following:
51738363731_0ff3db1d3c_c.jpg
Three English screwdrivers, a Duro speed brace, a Snap-on driver, and a tube of caulk for my bathroom remodel. $13

Yesterday, though, I drove out to shop sale which looked pretty promising. And there was a lot of good stuff, but the guy knew his body hammers so they weren't cheap, I didn't need any drill bits or another SK ratchet, and carburetors don't excite me anymore. But I spotted an older air rifle to the side.

Now, I don't see too many side lever rifles, mostly cheap pumps or break barrels. This was in pretty good condition, so I ask, how much? "$100" Sold!

It's a Diana 48/52 made in '86. A rear tack driver, it runs at about 1100fps. Diana is one of the oldest airgun manufacturers, starting in about 1890. Pretty happy with this find!

interesting old Disston that seems to be a saw on one side and a knife on the other? Would appreciate if anyone knows any more about it.

I do not see it in the 1873 Shannon catalog. 1891 Graham catalog lists “saw knife” on p22 (print) / p28 (scan). 1918 Disston catalog lists “saw knife” on p181 (print) / p39 (scan). I do not see it in the 1932 Disston catalog.
My grandfather had one, now in my uncle’s possession. It is a butchering tool: knife edge for meat, saw edge for bone.
Maybe intended for home use, as the 1923 Atkins catalog, p242 (print) / p247 (scan), describes a similar model as “a household necessity.” The 1895 Atkins catalog lists “saw knife” on p88 (print) / p90 (scan). From these few glimpses, my best guess is it was popular 1890s-1920s.
Along with several models of meat, horn, and bone -cutting saws, it is sometimes advertised by sellers as a Civil War surgeon’s tool, but Genuine surgeon’s saws don’t look anything like it. I would guess the tooth count is much finer on those, the blade much thinner.
