Nice finds bmw! You **** on the Stanley #3 and RJ bits for $18!!! Those turnscrews look like Footprint from Sheffield. I picked up a set of 4 of those earlier this year. Very solid drivers. Never having seen a side load rifle that looks awkward. Nice pickup!

saukit You also **** on that haul for $50!! That Ohio wooden plane looks to be in great condition and the Stanley 5-1/2 will clean up nicely. Getting the 5-1/2 was worth the $50 everything is gravy.

Lesser Son is correct on the Saw Knife name. I’ve got it pictured in an off line Disston catalog somewhere. Kitchen accessory. I’ve seen a guy using one as a rigid foam insulation cutter at an industrial site. Heartbreakingly trashed with glue etc.

Couple of nice scores this morning. Semi-complete Craftsman socket set in really nice Oslatools magnetic trays.

And some nice ratchets. One is a Duralast and the 15” is a Matco. Paid $60 for everything. Also, a set of pipe taps for $5. Some Greenlee.

I hit two estate sales today, along with going by the restore.
One estate sale was a dead end, but the second was quite nice:
51739248480_01c1ae99a0_c.jpg
Stanley #3, series 12 Sweatheart, and an unused set of Stanley Russell Jennings bits. $18

Oh, Beemer--you definitely **** for those auger bits! Congratulations! I've always liked the style of Jennings over Irwin.

Stanley #3, series 12 Sweatheart, and an unused set of Stanley Russell Jennings bits. $18

After that, I hit the Restore on the way home (after buying a Xmas tree), picking up the following:
51738363731_0ff3db1d3c_c.jpg
Three English screwdrivers, a Duro speed brace, a Snap-on driver, and a tube of caulk for my bathroom remodel. $13

Yesterday, though, I drove out to shop sale which looked pretty promising. And there was a lot of good stuff, but the guy knew his body hammers so they weren't cheap, I didn't need any drill bits or another SK ratchet, and carburetors don't excite me anymore. But I spotted an older air rifle to the side.
51738367531_3a18eed554_c.jpg
Now, I don't see too many side lever rifles, mostly cheap pumps or break barrels. This was in pretty good condition, so I ask, how much? "$100" Sold!
51738369151_d451aa130e_c.jpg
It's a Diana 48/52 made in '86. A rear tack driver, it runs at about 1100fps. Diana is one of the oldest airgun manufacturers, starting in about 1890. Pretty happy with this find!
I don’t know much about air rifles but that is some rare looking lever action. Nice grab! Looks like you are carrying on the family tradition 😉

Yeah, I thought of those as I made that comment. Never liked those and have never owned one.
I have a half dozen air rifles at this point*, and only one is a pump. The rest are break barrels. I much prefer them.

*After the last two years, it is much easier for me to go to the basement and shoot, as opposed to the shooting range an hour away.

Only ONE sale worth going to today - and I got there an hour after opening - NO tools (I asked and he said several guys had asked) except for a small soldering iron/station that I wasn't interested in. The guy had a nice 50's Chevy PU project in the garage, and a bunch of "left over" stuff from that in the drive. This was the only camp gear - a 228 Coleman lantern, barely used, with a pack of silk-light mantles and a rare original amber globe, which was the driver to buy another "green lantern". At least it's also a 228 (wide brim) Box is in fair shape, all the paperwork is also there.

Date on the bottom is 4 - 65 - (birthday lantern anyone?)

Thursday night I noticed a Craigslist estate sale ad that had a photo of a hammer with a distinctive octagon-shaped handle, so I showed up there early and was #2 in line for the opening. I saw some interesting stuff in the garage before it opened, but determined that the hammer was in the basement of the house, so I went down there first. Sure enough, the hammer was what I thought it was, and I found a few other interesting items down there as well.

I thought the garage would be picked over by the time I got to it, but that was not the case. I was really surprised that the Craftsman socket set was still there. I got out of there for less than $40.00.

Photo #1 is a SK-Wayne 9720 4-way lug wrench and a "clam rake". I use these rakes to clear debris from irrigation ditches, so it will be put to use. The lug wrench was in a corner of the basement, and the rake outside leaning against a fence.
Lug Wrench and Clam Rake.jpg
Photo #2 is an overview of the rest of the haul. I've noted what else came from the basement.
Estate Sale 1.jpg
Proto USA 1448 rubber/steel hammer (Basement)
P&C 1814 14" pipe wrench
Snap-On awl
5 lb. of 1-1/4" hex brass
Husky CS 43 Ratchet
Husky 13/16 deep socket
Craftsman =V= 1/2 dr. 12-pt. socket 1-1/8 (marked "Seattle Center")
STW 1/2 dr. 12-pt. 7/8 socket
New Britain 1/2 dr. 12-pt. 13/16 deep socket
Delta 711 Sanding Attachment
1/4" insert bit short screwdriver
Champion Los Angeles brass hose nozzle (Basement)
1/4 drive Craftsman socket set with extras

Photo #3 is the contents of the Craftsman socket box:
Craftsman Socket Set 2.jpg
Non-Craftsman items are the Proto 4749 ratchet with the drive on the selector side, two Proto 5256 1/4 to 3/8 adapters, and a P&C 7/16 deep socket. I think the very short extension was not part of the original set, as well as the spinner, wobbly, and deep sockets. The set should have had a ratchet, hinge handle, and a tommy bar. I'm not sure if all the sockets are there. It has 6-points from 7/32 to 7/16 and 1/4 and 5/16 8-points. The spinner is marked with a V in a circle.

Photo #4 is a close-up of the lug wrench markings:
SK Lug Wrench.jpg
Photo #5 is a Ford Model T band adjusting wrench that I gave to a friend that drives his Model T all the time. His son took the first one I gave him, so I knew he needed it! It came from the garage.
Band Wrench.jpg

I don't know what the Delta sanding attachment fit. Perhaps used in a drill press?

I'll have to put that hose nozzle in Outlaw's thread.

Local monthly flea, I picked up an empty SK 1/4” tin, an SK 3/8” breaker, a bent but good MATCO 13mm combo, and a Bonney brake spring tool. Total was $4 for all of it.

Nice finds Prov!

But unless my memory is completely gone, I don't remember a thread? :dunno: :ninja:

I'm Slacking...
So that is why I couldn't find it! I remember you saying you would start one.

This one is pretty interesting. I'm going to try it out and see if it works better because of the long taper. I think fire nozzles had that long taper, and assume it was for that reason. This would be a good discussion for a dedicated nozzle thread.

That style does shoot water out pretty far. I have 4 of them and they are good for a pretty high pressure stream. One has threads on the outside of the tip, so probably came with different tips?

I have the short version as well and that seems better if you are trying to clear a drain from the clean out with a hose, if only from a less mass perspective.

Provinical, IIRC, the 1/4" set should be a mix of 6 and 12pt, with either 2 or 3 8pts (1/4 & 5/16 for sure, forget if there is a 3/8)

Found a leather work mallet(?), 2 SAD irons with a trivet and a small cast iron ashtray/promo item.
Thats a Starret No.1-5 1/2 nippers, look to have never been used. Also a Starret metal gauge and 2 neat old clamps.
And a curved brush that just felt good in my hand.
And the best is this Cleveland Twist Drill Co. drill stand. I paid up for this piece, $40 but it just looks great.
I dont know if the pics do it justice but I am keeping this one.

I appreciate all the finds that get posted, but I seldom am jealous of them the way I feel about those Jennings bits that BMW found. And that Diana air rifle is a gem, too. Bought one new for a son about 25 years ago and it's a quality piece of work.

Swung by a surprise garage sale on my way home. Came away with this pile for $4. I think I have a weakness for busted up hammers. I added this Plumb to the pile waiting new handles. Picked up the Saxon wrench out of curiosity. The extension is 1/2" Craftsman. IMG_4535.JPG

RedVise, if the drill stand had all those bits in it when you bought it, that qualifies as a "you ****." I like the other items, too. I know that I am partial to wire brushes that fit the hand, because it seems like I get more done with them.

Don, you’re killing it.
Picker of the year contention in my opinion.
Thanks, I appreciate that. Actually the pandemic has really changed our approach to sales. We are no longer willing to stand in any lines at sales, even if it means missing out on some “good stuff”.
I spotted a “block sale” in Berkeley on Craigslist (actually three houses) but we found goodies at all three. The first sale had tools from a retired plumber and the price was 1/4 of what I expected to pay. The screwdrivers are Millers Falls, Proto LA, Vaco and the spinner is Powr-Kraft. The wrenches are Barcalo and Craftsman.81C4388F-0E55-4B2F-9918-B7B32F158608.jpeg
We walked across the street to the second sale and I spotted a nice high wattage Weller soldering gun set along with a little hand wire brush. Most of the soldering guns I see are pretty light duty.AD0D2EE9-FB09-459A-B29E-6D9A924B1593.jpegWe walked three houses to the third sale and I didn’t see any tools so I asked the seller and he said that the only thing he had was some socket racks. They turned out to be Craftsman and were ridiculously cheap so I picked them up.

I haven't posted much this year. So here's at least a small summary what I came across this year.

I'm pretty happy about that Plvmb toolbox, but it leaves me in a prickly situation as now I have to be looking for plvmb tools!!

That Reed 206R is extremely clean.

Craftsman socket set that I'd love to find in a catalog or date better. Ratchets seem to be made by plomb, no markings

The SK socket set came from a local estate sale and I filled in the missing pieces from ebay.

A few from today...went looking for a half price tool box and got beat...here's the scraps for $15:

Empty proto box but in great shape, no rust!

IMG_3537.jpg

A few Craftsman DBE's, Thorsen Speedhed cause WTH, Blackhawk fixed breaker, and Blue Point ball peen. The drivers all came out of a bag that I bought cause I fixated on the 1! Snap on in the bag. That's the shorty up top, the rest are all foreign and epoxied in. Might have to put these ones in the personal kit:)

IMG_3538.jpg

Next I went to a sale that pleasantly had a lot more tools than advertised. I was there a few hours after starting and despite having to get on the list, I only waited a few minutes. I was waiting right in front of the garage and dudes were in a bit of a frenzy so I didn't figure there would be much left. There was a lot of stuff to dig through though so here's what I bought...$25, yay first day prices.

Top two are long Craftsman 1/4" extensions that I figure might be useful for sets. Barcalo DOE, Duro Chrome combo, bent Mac Sabina, Penens, a few SK Wayne, and two Long C Ci's. The combo square is a Starrett and the main reason I paid up for this lot, the SK sockets are in really nice shape and I'm pissed I missed the 7/8"!

IMG_3539.jpg

Last trip I drove for a long time, this was the 2nd weekend of the sale and there were lots of tools but frankly it was really overpriced. I dug a few pieces out of the bottom of the bins for 8 bucks if I remember correctly.

These came in bunches, the four at top right are likely BS except the top one which I need to figure out. Then DBE's...superrench, lectrolite, SK, Barcalo, Plomb, Barcalo.

Wind made the upper 30s feel like the lower 30s this morning at Jake’s flea. Got there before daylight, then a cloud bank blocked the dawn. Of course I forgot my flashlight, so I started out using my phone, and plucked some treasure before the sun was up. $15 plus $17 later at the Weil Antiques parking lot flea brought home this mess, partially sorted.
1 Grube-y find is mostly hidden, but maybe the beady-eyed will spot enough of it to identify. 9707C45C-19C7-4418-8025-8922D543B15E.jpeg
EDIT - the detritis on the right yielded screws, bolts, etc that will find some use or be tossed. The **** screwdrivers will scrape rust or be recycled with the **** wrenches.
Here are a few closer views.

EDIT - C’man grips and a crowntop carry box (my shelves fit two of these side-by-side, so I have eight or so.

EDIT - Blackhawk 1/2dr ext, Utica 1/4dr torque wrench, Disston coping saw, Stanley Hurwood awl, Indestro Chicago kit wrench, Bonney battery dbe, Bonney long 8/16 combo, Bonney 114 15° dbe with one end user-bent, Herbrand /Triangle 8-19mm doe set, Stanley spark test screwdriver, GE 4x nutdriver, Bonney 3/8dr 5/8” crowfoot, 1 Bonney and 2 Duro electical wrenches, Wizard monkey wrench, Worth *(PS&W) 14” Stillson, Walden Worcester 1731A doe. The hidden gem is a Gruber #1 (9/16”) socket wrench, my third (no dupes, yet!) since Lugz first posted his 9pc set in Mar2020. I am already in just a dollar less than he paid for his whole set, so I’m not likely to make out quite as well, if I ever complete a set. Here’s an indoor shot of my faves today:36CD544B-53E7-4672-AEE6-D3E08CFEED5E.jpeg

EDIT - The Champion carpenter’s wood vise. I’ve been on the verge of bidding online for one of these several times. I would prefer the swooshy Champion logo, but I think it is a later development, so I’ll be happy with “pat applied for.” From other styles of vises, clamps, and cabinet hardware with the swooshy logo, I am pretty sure Champion was acquired by Stanley.

Did you see that wooden SAD salesman's box I posted?
Picked up the Saxon wrench out of curiosity.
If you're curious where all the self-adjusting crescent type wrenches came from, check out the "Speed-Nut" thread down on the Vintage Discussion board. You can find it in the A-Z thread index in the Sticky at the top of that forum. And if you need more enticement, note that Ryan, GJ's founder, is a descendant of the guy who first manufactured them.
I'm pretty happy about that Plvmb toolbox, but it leaves me in a prickly situation as now I have to be looking for plvmb tools!!
I can help you with that problem as I am letting a mess of wrenches and extras go. PM me if you're interested.

That plomb carry box is a hell of a find! Not common. You looking for anything craftsman or some other trade ? In terms of the ratchet, it most certainly is plomb made.

That was a joke that I'm in a prickly situation with the plvmb box. I'm excited to have it and looking forward to filling it with tools over time. I paid $30 for it.

I already tried to pry that Plomb box loose with no success
The color of that box is like blood in the water! :)

Wow. Now it's a "small collection". A few more and you'll have a "partial set." Well spotted, well done. Most unexpected!
