Friday morning drove an hour to an estate sale with a pic of an old toolbox full of Snap-on tools. Got there early but wound up as #2… #1 was a tool guy I recognized. Then several other tool-guys showed up. I figured I’d be fighting a dozen hands emptying drawers so I decided to make a power move and spoke to the guy running the show and we worked out a price on buying the tool box with all the tools. Guy #1 passed on the whole-box price … There we’re some salty tool guys in the garage when I put a ratchet strap around the box drawers and wheeled it down the driveway. Here’s a couple of pics of the Snap-on sockets and wrenches I sorted out. Still have a bunch of other stuff to go through in this 34” old-school Yorktown toolbox.

That was a joke that I'm in a prickly situation with the plvmb box. I'm excited to have it and looking forward to filling it with tools over time. I paid $30 for it.

The color of that box is like blood in the water! :)

Wow. Now it's a "small collection". A few more and you'll have a "partial set." Well spotted, well done. Most unexpected!

no worries Honza🤣 I really do want that box but sounds like Don has first shot at it if you ever decide to part with it. The price you paid deserves a you **** for sure! Well done

Speaking of vintage plomb… I did pick up this stamped panel plomb tool mobile and wartime top chest from a local member. It isn’t a true garage sale find but I am sure no one will mind seeing it posted. Both are in need of some straightening and love but both are beyond cool!42087BE6-2730-49D2-B086-0CFFC25DB5B0.jpegC39B7030-F78C-44C1-969F-924B7FB59BD6.jpeg6FA10F12-8ABA-4357-8E38-2FC1B214E9B5.jpeg0DE8762E-B657-4DC8-89F8-203F3591D2C2.jpeg

On Saturday, I got a late start as I was waiting for a friend to finish duck hunting to go with me to a tool sale. In the end, he couldn't make it as he had a long Hunny do list, so I went off on my own.

It seems my delay cost me, as much of the interesting things in the ad had been sold by the time I got there. Oh well, so it goes. But, I did pick up a few things: Snap-on mag screwdriver case with some of the bits, Proto flying lady tray, misc Williams and Proto impact sockets, a large pack of acid brushes, and a little pouch containing one Stanley coopers punch. All for $8.

After that, and because it was raining all weekend, I drove up north for the second day of a sale that might have some interesting things:

A nice machine lamp, Fulton plane (no 3 size), heavy-duty brace countersink, and a Proto utility knife. Everything was pretty cheap, except the lamp, so I ended up paying $23. And it was pouring when I got home, so I didn't bother to unload until today.

I found this Plomb chest in 2019 and let's just say I wish it still was in my possession! I love the graphics on it. So I'm definitely keeping that 100HR box...

You don’t see as many of the red 9989 in my neck of the woods. I have a olive drab green one but never the red. Really nice box! Hopefully it’s proceeds helped you find some other needed things!

A nice machine lamp, Love the lamp and the Proto flying lady rack, Those alone are worth the time and effort. I have two of those lamps. Never seen the rack before, just lovely. I may have to start hating you now…the tool boxes are over-the-top crazy good finds.👍

Lugz , what post was that ?
I must have forgotten to post it. They were in my LEFT-BEHIND folder from a few weeks ago. I don't know anything about antique irons, and I had never seen the name before in my life. I was enthralled with the box and the marking, but he was asking more than I was willing to spend. If you're interested, I'll see if it's still there on Friday.

Here you go...

Agree, Smoke ***** bad for those boxes! I never see Plomb boxes come up for sale, I can only remember seeing one in the last year and I passed due to price. Won't make that mistake again!

If you keep an eye out long enough, you will probably find another good one. Just check your local classifieds and something will hopefully pop up for you in decent shape. I live in a plomb saturated area and I can assure you boxes like these don’t come up often so don’t feel bad!

That and PB Blaster. If I use either one outside or in the garage she'll smell it on my hands when I walk in the house.

The spring pin tool for brakes is sometimes included on one of the handle ends of the long brake tool for removing and installing long brake springs on drum brakes.
And my wife also hates the smell of Kroil and PB Blaster. I try to convince her that since it frequently works well that's the Sweet Smell of Success, but she not buying it. 😄

My Wife, as well as I hate the smell of PB Blaster as if I use it in the Cellar the smell lingers for days.

I switched to Seafoam Deep Creep after watching Project Farm's review of it and it has worked out great. All the power of Kroil/PB Blaster without that nasty smell.

Seafoam Deep Creep? I'll definitely try to find that. I fully despise the smell of PB Blaster, even more so when it fails to work!

Here is my haul from the past week, from a remote location, Denver. These finds came from Charlie's Tools, and Surplus Tools and Commodities, both adventures in shopping for those who have never been. For those in the know, Surplus Tools will be announcing a series of closeout sales, with an estimated closing in June. Property taxes are getting out of hand. How the heck you have a sale there is beyond me, their prices are already so low.

Anyway, on to the tools. From Charlie's, 1-1/2 visits, I spent most of the 2nd one chatting with the owner. Picked up a few missing items, but didn't have the time to really dig into all the stuff I wanted to. Was bummed there were no 1/4" drive Vlcheck sockets. A bench dog, some 3/8" 3" extensions from Thorsen, Proto, Indestro, 1" Craftsman, 2" SK, 4" DuroChrome. In the 1/2" drive 3" Craftsman, 2" Bonney, 1/4" drive 11/16" socket for my SK set, 1/2" Duro 19/32 & 11/16 for another set.
PXL_20211215_211518916-XL.jpg

From Surplus Tools: L-R Axe Sheath, weird socket drives, Sampson 4" inside calipers (bought 3), sliding breaker bar, 6" Moore Wright outside calipers (bought 4), Duro Indestro metric wrench pouch, 1/4" breaker bar, name ground off, USA made, 8pt 1/2 drive socket 9/16" circle B logo, Thorsen & Wright (ground off) 3/8" square 1/4" drive, Western Forge 5/8" spark plug socket Old Forge screwdriver, 9mm deep blackhawk & N11 mm 3/8" drive, brass leash snaps, Bonney LD-20, . SOT12 & 12 square sockets in 1/4" drive, 3/16" 1/4" drive grind off, (Wardmastr) *Made in USA

PXL_20211215_211624319-XL.jpg

Further from Surplus: 3x Stevens Walden End opening socket boxes, Still trying to decipher the label, and a bunch of odd sized screws, lotsa 12-24, and some 2-56, 3-40 and 4-40 sizes. The boxes were mud encrusted.

PXL_20211215_211528274-XL.jpg

More details will be added in the Walden, Pouches, Bonney, SK, Druo, and Indestro Threads later. As well as the Charlies & Denver threads if I can find them

The label on the postwar Walden box looks to me like maybe a military repack label. I think that place had a flooding problem that left mud in the tools. I think these FSN marked boxes came out of that location in Colorado.

Picked this up off FB marketplace. Has been posted for 6 weeks so I couldn’t stand it any longer. Unused Husky 1/4” set in a metal tin, made in USA. She was asking $15 and I didn’t argue, plus she told me her husband was getting ready to go through his late father’s old tools, so that might be another visit in the future. Yes, Surplus Tools had a big flood many years ago, and is the reason so many tools in there are trashed. Boxes of taps, breaker handles, etc, all covered in mud, or rust, or both. Heartbreaking.

repack coming from military to civilian life is what I am assuming you mean. Not repackage to sell to military.

Here are a few acquisitions from last weekend that I didn't get a chance to photograph:

Indestro 1/2" speeder, Proto LA 1/2" breaker, Craftsman Circle U 1/2" breaker. This and the next pic were 20 bucks, came from a sale where the guy was clearing out his dad's house.
IMG_3545.jpg

Most of the Craftsman combos I bought to complete a set, also grabbed a few other v and vv wrenches for the hell of it. Challenger 6024 combo, the little wobbler is Snap on, Armstrong 3/8 ratchet, and Plomb 1/2" extension.

IMG_3546.jpg

I headed back to the estate sale where I picked up the SK sockets to see if I could find the 7/8"...unfortunately not but did find a 25/32. The wobbler is SK, the other socket is P&C. Armstrong ratcheting wrench, Barcalo, Indestro, P&C, SK, and a couple Walden Worcester nut drivers. Finally the little Craftsman set is missing the ratchet and extension but all the sockets are there, I know I have extras laying around to complete this one. $8 for this batch on 1/2 price day.

Exactly. I’ve seen quite a few of the military repack labels. Tin Medic used to raid that place regularly when he was stationed in Colorado. I got the Walden cases from another collector in Tennessee that bought boxes and boxes of tools from there.

Tools in Ordnance Dept packaging with labels and dates ranging from 1947 to 1953, often called "repacks" among WWII collectors, were not packed like that for surplus sales. They were packed like that, often in preservative, such as cosmoline and wax paper, and labeled by stock number and date, for long term storage by the Ordnance Dept at several major regional Ordnance Dept depots (e.g., Pueblo Ordnance Depot, in Colorado, CO, Rossford Ordnance Depot in Rossford, Ohio, etc) with the intent of being available for use again by the Ordnance Dept. When those depots decided to get rid of things, including tools, by selling them as surplus, that is how they were still packaged. When surplus outfits, like the place in Denver, Army & Navy stores, etc, bought stuff by the truckload, that's how they got it. The Army did not pack them with all the stockage info and preservative in preparation for selling them.

Speaking of surplus, I just bought this non-repacked plomb it’s original war time box. I will never open it as I think it is way to cool! There are a few different sizes offered on the bay now

Here is the label from RTM’s Walden box posted on the vintage Walden thread. Looks like a late repack to me.

I was confused by your use of the word "late" until I re-read my own post. I'm sorry. Ignore the dates. That was misleading of me. I agree, 1956 is much later than what we tend to see on repacks, focused, as we are, on WWII, because the farther you get away from '47 and '51, major repack years, the shorter the odds that it was a NOS wartime tool that got repacked/restocked away in long term storage. The Army continually packed things away, though. All through KW. All through the 60s, too. RTM's red box is a great example. The Ordnance Dept was no longer buying green boxes from Walden for 41-W-2615 sets. Those were packed away long before 1956. The tools inside the red boxes would've been different in the 50's then they were in 1945, too. And the FSN changed. When the tools repacked in 1947, 1951, 1953, 1956, etc. and sent to depots like Pueblo and Rossford were actually let go by those depots to outfits such as Charlie's is not known. Years later. They got whatever they had, including at least two different generations of Walden midget sets!

Here's an old forged body hammer with an interesting way of securing the head. Anybody recognize the logo?

I added two more free trampoline frames to the supply pile for my upcoming firewood rack project. I didn't consider that each tramp frame would vary wildly in tubing width, wall thickness and hoop diameter. But with four frames on hand, I should have enough raw materials to make it work.

IMG_20211214_132435.jpg

Actually, I have collected five frames, but SWMBO already claimed one as a Christmas decoration.

IMG_20211212_164339.jpg

No good sales in the forecast here near me, but I won some auction lots that I'll pick up on Monday and report here. More to come!

Daily service announcement: Please remember to vote for both picker of the year, and next year's thread host.

Links to both polls are in my signature.

Now, where were we? Oh, yeah, our finds. On Thursday I went to an estate sale that said there was a metal lathe and some tools. Well, I am not sure if I just missed the lathe, totally possible with the scant tools there, or if they mistook a lathe for a metal cutting bandsaw. Either way, a bust. Not to mention, but it was the worst run estate sale I have ever seen. Anyway, after that, I hit two Restores and two thrift stores. I was lucky at one of each:
51752177398_886e7a8cfe_c.jpg
At the first Restore, I found the Snap-on KRA247 for $4 and the vintage light socket at .50. I always pick those up for lamp repair. At the first thrift store, I found the Kipling and the Dazor for $13.50. I will buy any Dazor for that price.

I mostly hang over on the Vintage forum, but as a warm up for 2022 I thought I'd post up my Estate sale finds from earlier today. Total of $2 well spent! I've also posted a couple of these items over on the Vintage forum in the appropriate threads.

An unmarked (other than size) kit wrench
Plomb pebble 3/4" combo
Challenger 4" Clik-Stop adjustable
Blue Point Boxocket XS1214 short offset DBE with 1929 date code
Bonney 2814 single offset Chrome Vanadium with 1928 date code

Beemer (and others near the coast in Oregon): anyone want to buy the contents of a garage for about twenty bucks (at the current bidding number)? There's admittedly a lot of junk in there, but also several trays of hand tools, and other stuff with some value.

Auction closes in three hours.

HA! I have been through that garage, everything left is ****. Oh, I am sure there is something in all of that, but not to the extent that I want to deal with it.
