Daily service announcement: Please remember to vote for both picker of the year, and next year's thread host.

Links to both polls are in my signature.

Got nothing happening around here close by, and the weather is nice, if a bit brisk. I'm living vicariously though you guys! Glad to see all the scores and some suckage going on! (I know, I know... :wtf:)

Wow. I haven't really been paying attention to the polls until now.

Looks like Old Radar is in position to potentially pull off an unprecedented feat in the long, storied annals of Garage Sale thread end of year voting: The Twofer!

He has 2022 Host in the bag. And right now he is leading, by one vote, in the 2021 PotY race! New Host has tended to be a "consolation punishment", but it looks like he has a legit shot at the ViseHead Safety Helmet, which might come in handy as he's whipping us troublemakers into shape next year.

2021 coming to an end, and I almost got through the whole year with no good finds. Until yesterday...

We're upgrading the cleanroom-quality compressed air system at work (going with a much larger unit due to demand). Two of these were headed to the dumpster (I kept the one with the newer compressor head and fewest hours)...

Compressor is currently wired for 480 volts, but can be configured to run on 208. I have all of the manuals and diagrams.

5hp oil-less scroll pump
15.3cfm @ 100 psi

Tank is 60 gallons, epoxy-lined.

The whole setup was new in 2015.

Not sure if I'll keep the desiccant air dryer, but that's probably only about a year old.

This will probably live in the garage (unheated, no AC), so it won't have the "cushy" indoor treatment anymore, but it'll also rarely get used. Main use will be to blow out the lawn irrigation system each year.

The compressor is stupid-loud, but belt-driven. As I see it, I have several options for a path forward:

Replace the motor with a 120 volt unit, or even a gas engine.

Replace the entire head with a quieter one.

Mount the whole thing on a trailer.

Maybe put it in the basement, and run a pipe out to the garage?

But, letting this go to the recyclers was DEFINITELY NOT going to happen, LOL...

And, free is my favorite price, even if this will cost me a little to make it useful at home!

So I poked around outside my usual short range, and found a HS Flea I decided to try. 2 hour round trip... Once a month deal and not bad at all! Probably crowded in warm weather! Easily double or triple the size of local HS Flea that stopped as of the pandemic.

I had several "left behinds" for various reasons. one was the smaller SO carry box that has one drawer and a removable tray - date was '62 , Not the midget box, maybe one size bigger? not even close to a regular carry box size.. Too much $$ for me, at least today.

So several smalls came home: A small 2 blade pocket knife, (pretty darn sharp too!) "Hammer Brand" and yes, the Arm and Hammer logo! Patent No 2087943 (1936) on each blade which oddly is for leather scales, not what this knife has. The patent holders are from Solingen Germany So I suspect the same origin for the knife. ! adn I liked the black and green streaked scales (No cracks, chips or scratches!) Main blade is not even 1-1/2", (but might have been new?).

Ratchet wrench is a 7/16 Craftsman, Sockets are SK, Bonney, "Vanadium chrome" in 24mm, and a Williams.

The small socket rack bears a Duro assigned patent No. 2065340 1935

So let's talk about this.

First, is it too early to start whining about a recount and voter fraud?
Secondly, with barely a week to go in the voting, only 37 and 34 members, respectively, have bothered to enter a few clicks to cast a vote for Host & PotY. I figure with a concerted effort we could mount a flurry of ballot box stuffing and either RTM or txlonghorn could pull off a come-from-behind win!

Believe it or not, that's actually pretty good! Might be a new voter turnout record. And I'm being dead serious. The thread has always been very active, moves fast, and always draws a hundred or more participants. But the overwhelming majority of those have always had less than 20 posts. Maybe only 20 guys with 50 or more posts. And maybe 12 "regulars" with 100 or more posts. We've had 20 total votes pick a new host before. It doesn't feel that way, but there really aren't too many guys on here every day and they probably all voted. I don't get it either. It's easy and all in good fun. But we've never had big poll numbers.

I thought that we would be shut out this weekend with so few likely sales on Craigslist and Estatesales.org. A local sale popped up that Google maps said was 4 minutes away so we checked it out. Prices were slightly high but travel costs were minimal.

I hate the new Quoting system...

I had this thought today since I drove so far roday, was that an excuse to "go big"? :dunno: I spent more in fuel than on what I got..

WOW!!! MikeinRI in for the kill at the end!

Great score MikeinRI!

You ****! Looks like a nice unit.

Suckage confirmed! Dang, if you don't invest in a few air tools, your missing out!

Mike Monumental suckage there!!! Congrats!

THANKS GUYS!!! Go big or go home, right??? I definitely appreciate the suckage awards from you guys!!!

My first challenge is going to be making room in the garage to get it indoors. It's currently "stored" on the trailer under a tarp.

From there, I'll need help figuring out where / how to set it up to get the most usage from it. I'll set up a separate thread for that.

Funny thing is, everyone at work knows I'll take anything not nailed down (I've scored work benches, shelving cabinets, filing cabinets and a Jet JMD-18 mill/drill over the years), but NO ONE mentioned offering this up (they were content to PAY to have it removed, apparently).

When I asked about taking it, they looked stunned that anyone would WANT it. I think they convinced themselves that it was junk because it ran a lot.

I would have taken both units (to have spare parts at a minimum), but the pumps weren't identical. And, I didn't want to sound greedy. But, I watched them put the second unit on the truck to take it away, and felt pretty sad about that!

My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard.

Lugz is right, there is never a huge turnout in the GarageSale polls. I have no idea why, but there it is.

On Friday, I hit two estate sales and one Restore.
51754984573_bfe48ee9b7_c.jpg
The first sale only had a small number of tools, and I pick up three Vlcheck nut drivers (1/4,5/16, 11/32) two SpinTites (3/8, 7/16) an SK raised panel and a very small hollow ground driver. $4.25.

The second sale was OK until I let my guard down, and not in a good way.
51754740971_329495cc96_c.jpg
Craftsman metric sockets in both 3/8 and 1/2 on Craftsman racks, and a Goodell Pratt box (which came with a dozen brace bits for some reason). But, as I was walking out, I spyed this:
51753916007_3011e18592_c.jpg
51753916682_ec5796c248_c.jpg
a 1957 Erector set #8a, the Ferris wheel kit. Beautiful decals and I have seen Erector sets at other sales go for big money, so I picked it up, looking to flip it. I get it home and start to check the price, and it turns out this is the most common set made. And I paid about twice what it is worth. I guess I need to start working on my son getting me grandkids, and quick!

No way I can compete with the total suckage of a free awesome air freaking compressor, but I’m gonna keep swinging in preparation for an epic 2022.

Yesterday’s pawn shop run resulted in my earlier posted Cornwell JR30. (Thanks for the information on that one).

What I didn’t tell you all about was that I left another Cornwell 3/8 ratchet there. It was locked up tighter than…well…it was frozen solid.

I went back today and agreed to their price in hopes I could revive it or rebuild it, or that the Cornwell gods would smile upon me.

When I got home, I decided to try the Seafoam Deep Creep that I recently learned about here on this site. Wow! 2 hours later, she was spinning like new. VERY impressed with the Seafoam and will be cleaning and servicing both ratchets tomorrow. 9337B8F4-FFCD-4F45-BEB7-DCD035663A89.jpeg

I'll echo the suckage for mikeinri, nice score!

Here are the somewhat meager results of the few estate sales I was able to hit. I'm much more excited about the stuff I picked up at an estate auction but not sure if that's applicable to this thread? If so I'll post that up too. In the meantime, here are the non auction items:

This was a first day sale and I kinda paid out the nose but I like all of this stuff so I did it anyway. $35 for the lot if I remember correctly. Top items are all Plomb, 1 1/4" 3/8 socket, WF-8 breaker, 5265 breaker, and 5260 extension. The combo is Proto LA, the three DBE's are Williams superwrenches, the speeder is Snap on (marked K4), and under that is a Snap on socket that is marked "E" if I'm not mistaken. The other two sockets are long C 3/8 Craftsman.
IMG_3548.jpg

The next sale I arrived in the last 1/2 hour of the sale and it was thoroughly picked over. I couldn't leave behind the Indestro offset DBE's and the little Ford wrench I grabbed for the same reason. I was pleasantly surprised to find the little Plomb DBE in a box full of dreck. $7 for this batch.

IMG_3550.jpg

The last sale was a privately run estate sale, and there wasn't much left in the way of hand tools. Picked up this Indestro box because I liked the label, the Proto 6128 just because, and of course I couldn't leave a giant Plomb 1240 combo behind. $10. I almost scored a box full of salmon plugs, which new go for $10-15 each. This tackle box had probably 15 of them in there. Just my luck, the gal running the sale sent me to her husband for a price and surprisingly he sent me back to her. When she saw what was in there, she said "Oh I wanted to keep all my dad's old fishing lures!". I couldn't begrudge her that and I left without the plugs.

That Indestro box does have a great label, and estate auctions are perfectly good here.
Now if I can just get the box cleaned up without ruining all the adhesive on the label...it's already pulling up a bit.

Here are the auction lots, the box closed at $24, the misc wrenches at $15, and the Plomb at $10. After fees and taxes it was $68. I would have gotten the Plomb lot for $5 if the seller wasn't blatantly shill bidding, no one else even bid other than someone with the same username as the email address for the seller :cautious:

Duplex machinist box, this needs some work but for some reason I like these boxes a lot. Looking forward to cleaning this one up.

IMG_3557.jpg

IMG_3556.jpg

Misc wrenches, I primarily bought this lot for the VlChek DBEs and the P&C

IMG_3551.jpg

Here are some more of the misc wrenches, some older stuff on the bottom half...

IMG_3552.jpg

And here's the Plomb lot

Today I hit two uninspiring estate sales and two Restores. In no particular order:
51756180444_8130c40f94_c.jpg
At the first sale, I found the Stanley marking gauge and Colombia vise jaw inserts, along with two books on wood projects. $3
The next sale yielded the small Stanley claw hammer and tack puller for $3.50. The first Restore was quite nice, and I picked up the incomplete Tru-Test set (most of which I have), the Triplett 666, Vlcheck 7/16 nut driver, and the dual bulb fixture I was needing. A little pricy at $17, but not too bad. The final Restore was where I found the New Britain hex set for $3.

I got this load on September 25th and was hoping to clean and restore them all up and eventually post here. This is the motherload by quantity from this year. However, with the life getting in the way and some other tool acquisition since that time (and restoration of some of the tools), I am way behind and will post only what I cleaned at this point, what I photographed plus the list of the tools which I documented going through the bin (had to document the sockets as no name+Jappanese+Taiwan+modified sockets were not worth the time and were sold for $7 yesterday). There are still plenty of things left in the box which I did not catalogue, but I have to let something slide since I will not finish cleaning it for a wile....
I will copy and paste the story from my previous post (Bonney pouch is much better and wrenches are cleaned, but I will post it all together once the pouch is cleaned to the best of my ability in original post..."

"Well, will give a small story first. I bought a lot of dirty and rusty tools (not added to a proper thread yet as I would like to make picture of cleaned up ones, otherwise you will suspect I am buying mostly junk). When I originally visited the sale on my way to work, I bought some tools with this Bonney set which was not complete. I arrived at work, decided to look at the set again (it was missing 2 wrenches) and vaguely remembered in the pile of old rusty tools in a different part of the garage a tiny wrench which was similar in shape, but very rusty and I did not even remember if it was a Bonney. Postpone many hours. On the way back from work my OCD kicked in - drove by the sale - people were closing it. Could not see it right away, but bought more tools (danger of having more time and not in a rush to get to work) As I bought more, they gave me even more rusty tools in a contained so they would not have to throw them away as nobody wanted them. Well, I got home, went through tons of rust, dirt and everything that was there and found not one, but both missing pieces!!! The one I remembered is on the left)"

Everything here + what is still awaiting cleaning and being listed in my garage cost me $11...

There is still a lot in the box including old Cincinnati C-clamps, more wrenches (some modified), screwdrivers, etc, etc. I decided that since we have only 11 days left and I still have tons of cleaning and restoration on other purchases from this year, I will just post what I have and consider adding it to this post if I remember once it's all done (I am catching up currently on one of my later acquisitions which has a lot of tools and sockets which fill spaces in my SK wrench and socket gaps, etc...)

How I spent $71 this morning…

Today marks the last day Jake’s Flea Market is open till April, so MrsLS & I headed down Rt100, arriving around 7am. Overnight rain, near-freezing temps and a 17mph wind seemed to have convinced many to stay home, but a few reliables were out in the field, and my main objective was a shed where I had spotted the heritage box and circle-U 1/2dr set a week ago.
My personal favorite is the zipbag of steel corner reinforcements. I have paid 4/$1 for these on occasion, but this bag of dozens - none rusty - was $1 total!
Back home, I crossed the street where a neighbor was running a porch sale and picked up a handful of mostly parts saws and other smalls.
EDIT - update on the “for parts” saw - turns out to be a Woodrough & McParlin Conncinnati. Nickel-plated brass Glover patent nuts and the skew back lead me to suspect it is from after the Disston takeover of National Saw Co, but I really don’t know. The medalion has more letters, but so worn in the center, I’ll have to search more to learn what it says. Thanks to Mark Stansbury’s trowel blog for the info. 1875BB8D-1483-4AA8-A55A-8CF2346EC75F.jpeg
