Happy solstice. I know I missed the exact moment by an hour (in the middle of work), but today those of us in the northern hemisphere can look forward to the slow return of the sun from its sojourn among the antipodes, and the eventual opening of outdoor-venue sales. Unfortunately, some of us will have to endure the chill of winter months until the thermal flywheel stores enough energy to warm our days.
Best wishes in this between season to our current host for a job well done, and to our future host, whose confirmation is only a few short days from now.
More time for reflecting AFTER that anticipated announcement!
Merry Yule, y’all!

OR Nice haul! What are you using to put the shine on that Wizard socket and speeder? Do you have any parts sources to fix the latch on the Wizard toolbox? Just asking, sadly I don't have any parts to help you.

Thanks, Tex! I just used a hand held wire brush on them both--nothing applied. I used a very fine wire end brush, my drill and some degreaser to gently scour the outside of the box. The paint is really pretty shot and as I was applying some Johnson's paste wax I was reminded of the phrase "you can't polish a turd." As for the latch on the right side, I thought just to find some steel wire and bend it into shape. The latch itself is easily bent back into shape.

Really nice lot that I found on Facebook marketplace. A Stout battery powered bandsaw, with case, two batteries, and charger. A Craftsman miter saw with laser track. And a 3/4 HP block grinder in really nice condition - even has the quench tray.

Paid $100 for the lot

Restores are really site-specific. There are half a dozen or so around here, two are completely useless, one is great, one is almost always useless, and two or three usually have good stuff. I know they are all individually run, but it seems to be all over the place as far as what you get.

One trick though, you have to check the good ones as much as possible. There are sharks (just like us) who are in every day, seeing what pops up.

BlueBomber, I'm pretty sure that the "20" farm wheel" is a front wheel from a 1939-1947 Ford 9N/2N tractor. It should have a 4.00x19 tire on it. Nice picking!

I saw an ad listed for some Corvair parts. In the pic I see a rare part that is not reproduced. The part I have on my car is incorrect but 99.8% of people would never know. I drive 4 1/2 hrs to get the parts. The lot was cheaper than a repop grill.
I plan to keep the parts correct for my car and try to sell the rest

Techteacher, I've owned dozens of cars including a number of sports cars, but the one I wish I had kept was the '65 Corvair Corsa. The earlier Corvairs I ran in ice races and I feel like that was where they belonged.

Flea markets and estate sales may be slowing down this time of year, but I finally captured a unicorn I've been wanting for a while off of Facebook Marketplace.

Coats 40-40A tire changer--certainly worn and dirty, but fully functional (except for the gauge). An old mechanic wanted this out of his shop, since he had a newer one doing all the work. I got it for $200.

They used a Bobcat to lift it into my truck bed, and I got it out with my engine crane. Even set it down on the dolly I got in the auction on Saturday. I'll clean it up over the winter, and then decide where it will live in the new garage.IMG_20211222_100417.jpg

I got real familiar with one of those in my college years when I was a tire technician. I could mount and dismount tires in a matter of seconds!

Sounds like you have an early. I used to drive a '64 Monza coupe. Awesome little car.

This one seems a little tired compared to the ones I just watched on YouTube, which are likely running at the speeds you remember. After Christmas, I'll open it up to service the cylinders and lube everything to see if that speeds things up.

Congratulations, Old Radar, as the next GJGS thread launcher and host! Your participation on this annual thread, both in posting great finds and thoughtful engagement with your fellow pickers, make you well qualified to be our ceremonial figurehead next year.

And finally, congratulations, bmwrd0, on a successful year as thread leader. You guided this band of the usual suspects and newcomers through yet another interesting year with aplomb. Welcome to the ranks of Thread Host emeritus!

Woo-hoo! I won I won I won!
Thanks to all who voted. It was very close, wasn’t it?
Congratulations to Old Radar, for whom I have the highest respect and in whose threadmastery I trust we will enjoy another fantastic year.
A heart-felt THANK YOU to bmwrd0 for the exemplary hosting of this year’s thread, and of course, the creation of our first wearable, protective POTY trophy. I cannot wait to try it on!

Congratulations LS, for a well deserved win as Picker of the Year! Wear the title and the trophy proudly!

Beemer, thanks for a great year as Host--you and the other Host emeriti have been inspirational to me and I will strive to live up to the standards you have set!

To all the garage and estate sailors who voted for me, I'd like to quote Bill the Cat and send you all a slobbery "THBBFT!!!"

Pretty tough to top these points, so I won't even try!

Congrats to all, and thanks for all of your amazing contributions.

It's humbling (and more than a little embarrassing) to be listed in the same poll with you guys!

Congrats LesserSon on the Picker of the Year! Well deserved!

And Old Radar, I'm thankful that you're our host for next year. I know you'll live up to the large shoes that Beemer left behind!

Merry Christmas all and Happy New Year! Now when do those damn sales start running again...

But wait: the year’s not over!
I had a 1:45 drive to a “local” pickup eBay item this morning, which put me so close to Columbia PA, I just had to stop at Bootleg Antiques. Mrs LS kindly took this pig in sh1t photo at the best booth. AB9F5079-B62E-41F9-ACB5-29E10559C81A.jpeg
Best item, though, was priced beyond my interest.

I have a pair of these dikes in better condition, but I don’t think they are stamped. I don’t see a mfg on these, but the Forged USA is encouraging.

Yeah, the heritage box at the top right caught my eye, but the bottom was mostly holes; not just surface rust on the rest. We went through two other emporiums before that. I nearly buckled to a 5” Parker, but a 6” Reed sobered me. The place I had intended to stop is closed for the holiday until Wednesday.

Wow LS! I definitely agree with Smoke on that booth!!! Did prices generally run pretty fair or did it vary from some decent deals to overpriced?

I should have taken pics to augment my memory!
I think the Parker was $225, I am now less certain it was 5”…I think so, but maybe 4”. I’m inclined to think it was a 10X-X, so 104-4 or 106-5? I’m sorry; I looked at a LOT of stuff today, probably a dozen vises. It was in a place called Tollbooth Antiques. So was the Reed, but on a different floor, I think. Several places in Columbia are meandering industrial brick buildings from the canal/rail era. Just the remains of the original purposes are worth looking. I liked this choose-your-power panel in one. 2BEA2B85-370B-4B2C-866C-A7AFB9A85706.jpeg

The prices at the booth I purchased from start at $5ea for most wrenches, pliers, almost regardless of size or brand, so I picked a few things that were worth that to me, which in an open flea market, I would get for $1-2. Vise Grips $8. Ratchets ranged up to $20 (there was one with a drive plug, maybe Mossberg or Walden, for less, which I forgot to grab). The abundance, though a little picked-over (no Snap-on I can recall) is a bit mesmerizing.
