OR, you got me....I left out the [/Sarcasm] at the end of the sentence about the personal attack. After graduating from HS in NJ I have a pretty wide sarcastic streak.

Old Radar is so good at extended dry sarcasm that newcomers who don't know we actually like each other in here may need a warning and even old timers had better recalibrate!
I've been called worse things than sarcastic--a few even true--but as recognized by Lugz, I do have a pretty wide streak myself. I'm therefore usually pretty good at recognizing it when I see it and almost always respond in kind. The uninitiated would do well (and i would sincerely appreciate for them) to take a good second look at anything I write that they may interpret as a little harsh, cutting or implausible--preferably with their humor detectors fined tuned to sarcasm.

Well it was 78 degrees yesterday and the wind chill is now 19 degrees. For some reason I feel compelled to go to Bussey's Flea Market this morning since there are no estate sales going on. Hopefully it will turn up something interesting besides frostbite.

I don't think there is a single garage sale within 500 miles of me this weekend. It was -11deg yesterday morning, and -16 this morning. Not many will brave that cold.

GP, I've never come up with an M51. Jackets and coats, yes. and Lugz, I once had an Eisenhower Jacket - Given to me by my best friends father, as his son was much bigger in the shoulders. It ft me well, if a hair tight, but it WAS supposed to be that sort of fit. It was stolen at the race track in my first year of racing. I miss that jacket!

I have had for years an Army wool long coat (very warm), and a couple of the black lined rain coats. I routinely wear the filed jackets.

I also have a German light field jacket and like that one in particular for its inside pocket (for my wallet). Not so good for real cold weather or wet, but for just cool days its great.

I don't have much going on here either. and CL changed its options on me and for a while all I had was map, no postings. I finally found the map options button and got the posts back, - what there was of them - BUT you can't do specific towns anymore? only "X Miles from a particular zip? I hate that...

#$&$, more “enhancements“ that are really gonna lists me off. Those mileage things are such a pisser from where I live, cities over the hill can show up before things that are reasonable close. Even stuff across the bay some times if I use the home zip code looking for a vendor.

Nothing. But it was close on the frostbite. The booth where they collect $2 for parking was empty with a free parking sign--they probably lost out on $20. Only a few shop keepers were open. Almost no regular booths were occupied and the day trader tables were completely bare. The site's structures funneled the 25kt wind causing a venturi effect that compounded the wind chill, so I can't really fault the natural born Texans' decision to wait for more temperate weather.

I am not a good Fleamarketeer
I don't get there early enough
I lose focus easily looking at row after row of junk and ****..... so I have a tendency to walk past stuff
I also pay too much. I don't dicker over a dollar or two. I figure the seller can use that dollar more than I can.

So, I don't find much
But, it sure is FUN!

Had a house full of football fans who I had to get away from.
The yelling scares the poor dogs. And me.

There was a small, local swap nearby this morning, one that happens the first Sunday of most months. I try to go when I can, but I made a point of it as I wanted to see how full it was, table-wise, and I was also jonesing for some swap action! Now, it isn't really a swap of locals trying for one giant garage sale, but more in the vein of small-time antique dealers, local artisans, and that sort of thing. I know Provincial tries to make it each month as it is even closer to him. So, without further ado:
51796227509_5dfb0aedea_c.jpg
A Marple's cleaning kit, Stanley claw hammer, brace bit chuck, fancy driver handle, Snap-on 12mm socket, and a push-button switch.

I had also hit an estate sale on the 31st of last year (I know, I know, I shoulda posted) but when I got home my neighbor had a keg of beer going, and you know how that goes... Anyway:

Snap-on Pliers, Plomb DOE, Bluepoint 8mm combo, Swingline stapler, and a pair of carved antelope.

Maybe it’s the angle of the photo, or artistic license of the carver, but those look more like okapi than antelope.

If I had a dollar for every Size 38R Eisenhower jacket I ever looked at! 38! WTAF? The last time I fit in a 38R jacket I was 12 years old. And I'm not a big guy. 5'10" 200 lbs. All I can say is WWII apparel sizes and the distance between a Willys MB steering wheel and the seat are consistent.
Just the other day I found the draft cards for 3 of my grand uncles which were brothers.....they were 5'7",5'8" and 5'9" and all three were in the 130's lbs.....probably would have fit

Wow, that's amazing. Did they all come back healthy from the war?

My family is full of WWII veterans (all passed by now), but we had nothing like that, unfortunately.

Time for me to start playing. I was able to make some significant additions in the final couple weeks of last year to complete a couple quests and that left some room to begin paying attention to some other sets I am working on.

Due to the lack of flea market and estate/yard/garage sales in my area, I’ve pretty much been looking on the auction site. Keeping in mind my “Raineman mizer plan” I’ve been able to make some frugal snags there (if there is such a thing as frugal on eBay).

First package I was able to get my hands on arrived today (purchased closing days of 2021) was a multiple item purchase from a single seller.

Adding to my Blue Point Supreme DOE set are,
S2024-5/8 x 3/4
S1820-9/16 x 5/8
S1416-7/16 x 1/2

Also added a Bonney RF45A refrigeration ratchet to my RF tin.

Feels good to get on the board. D5FF88FB-85DB-40EF-B2B6-50EB9A362B1D.jpeg7213B62C-0124-4F1E-8C0F-83550E41E73C.jpeg

Oh, brotha from anotha motha, I am well acquainted with the virtues of the M51, Shirt, Field, Wool. Here is mine, Olive Drab Shade #105, made in 1953. Never issued. I wear it over another shirt from November to March for anything except standing around.
When you got that M51, did the seller thow in a Jerry Can ?

Well, I have a swap meet to go to tomorrow, so wish me luck!
I was gonna ask you where but once you mentioned Provincial, i figured it out! Glad to see you got out...I can't wait for the one in Vancouver at the end of January.

Found this old window on the craiglist free section. said it was from a 1930's era home on Lake Nokomis (minneapolis). it is just shy of 8 foot tall. should be a fun spring project, not sure at this point what my plan will be.
last year i found an old window that was dumped along the road. not to long after we had to put the dog down. so i did this with it.win.jpgwin1.jpgwin2.jpg

Smoke, thanks for going there!

I've been doing a little research into one of the more prolific jerry can producers, Wheeling (from WV). The big question is which Wheeling actually made the cans...apparently over 8 million of them! Was it Wheeling Steel or Wheeling Corrugating? Does it really matter at this stage? No, but the lessons from this thread, and others, which Lugz and others have doled out about industrial research are somewhat inspiring; that rabbits like this MIGHT be able to be tracked down. The jerry can contracts were clearly with Wheeling Steel, but (about 1/2 way down) this site says that Wheeling Corrugating actually did the work: https://weelunk.com/help-solve-historys-mysteries-patriotic-wwii-workers-edition/ These contracts ran from Jan. 1940 to 1946. Wheeling Steel had a total of 9 plants with over $124.7M in total contracts, of which $14.3M were related to either gasoline cans or steel drums.

Wheeling Steel was the parent company, and Wheeling Corrugating was a sub-company. Both now long since closed up, but the Steel Co. remnants made it to the 21st Century before their final throes.

Knowing how far afield this post is for the thread, I'll close by pointing out that the Wheeling MFR mark on the bottom of the can sure looks like the Wheeling Corrugating red label, in the lower right, here:

https://flic.kr/p/aBhqGx
Not my pic, but lifted from another forum, to show the MFR mark:

Happy New Year, my picking friends!

...and for your voyeuristic viewing pleasure, a little back story to the current post:

Living full-time in an RV in SW Montana in winter leads to an almost unconscionable consumption of propane. Propane, let it be known, that never runs out in all-and-sundry tanks until the precise moment that the thermometer begins reading on the negative side of the scale. That's below the 0 for our balmy weathered southern folk.

At any rate, the propane ran out, the pipes froze, and yours truly began searching around the small town of his residence looking for anyone who might take pity on a partially frozen and heavily bundled troglodyte wandering around their parking lot and muttering to himself. Myself, that is.

Unfortunately, both purveyors of liquified petroleum gas within reasonable distance were either out... or INOP due to the cold! This dire situation necessitated debouchment for further locales wherein the highly-necessary petroleum product might be found. Which, 2 hours later, found oneself and one's Bride in the thriving metropolis of Bozeman. Enroute to the aforementioned propane seller, my Bride pointed out the existence of a previously unexplored pawn emporium which, oddly enough, was open on a Sunday afternoon. After sliding sideways across 2 lanes of icy roads and wildly spinning wheels both steering and rubberized, Ol' Blue was parked in a snowbank and I was running coatless for the entrance with visions of rusty treasures dancing in my head. A 15-minute scramble through a shop where the dangers of both Omneekron and Tetanus ran rampant netted the following:

Unfortunately, I will likely be doing more watching than posting for the time being as we are pretty much back to shelter in place trying to avoid the latest variant. At least the internet is an alternative, albeit expensive.

Stay safe, Don.

And while it might not be the first choice, it looks like you're working the internet to your best advantage judging by the GMTK you've been putting together (y)

I think about this from time to time. "Expensive" in many cases is relative. Considering mostly the cost of fuel and the free time taken away from taking care of things I am supposed to be doing with my free time, finding something on the auction site (especially something you have been trying to find for a while) might actually begin to seem like a bargain.

But as we all agree I'm sure...where is the fun in that?

I've caved more than once on a quest and just pulled the trigger on the interwebz (in other hobbies as well) to get something I've been searching for for a long time. Usually I'm happy with doing that, and it usually triggers a sudden flood of availability of the exact item I buy.

The "search" or "hunt" to me is the most satisfying part of collecting, but sometimes the juice just isn't worth the squeeze and you need to hit "Buy it Now".

Indeed. We got a full and very regular helping of the latter last year, but the former was kept under wraps. I sense a resolution.

Um, what?! Either I missed it last year, or this is new! I had no idea you were a nomad. And trust me, Nomadland scenes were running through my head as I read your post. Now I have a million questions. The tonnage of Plomb you consisently find no longer surprises me. I get it now. Oil fields and mines. But where the heck are you putting it all?

I actually "purchased" this on the big auction site at the end of 2021 but didn't check the mailbox until yesterday. So I'm counting it as a 2022 pick. I'm trying to build a Stanley No. 750 chisel set. This 1/4" was a welcome addition in great shape and I still have all my extremities. If anyone has any spare No. 750s or 720s I'd be interested.

Ah yes, the RV life...

A Covid-related job loss in Spring '20 necessitated our rapid relocation from Alaska, and led to the purchase of a rather large pull-behind trailer with room for 4 plus a 100 lb. dog. We ended up nomading our way across 29 states and untold job applications before landing in a breathtaking little slice of heaven in SW Montana.

Tools, toys, and various projects get stored in the cargo trailer parked alongside. All in all and despite the various attendant headaches, we're dang thankful for our little home on wheels, ownership of which allows us time to save and plan for a more permanent structure.

Best regards,
John

If you guys enjoy that sort of tale, this is my mother and her husband's website for their RVing life. It's a little bit different, as they have shipped one of the smallest RV's to five continents at this point.

A little of both. I’ve got a 100lb tank pigtailed into the selector valve that had 15 or so pounds but too cold to pressurize. Where I utterly failed to be properly prepared was in allowing the 2 mounted 30lbers to run empty prior to switching to the big tank… lesson learned.

How long does 100 lbs last in those temperatures?

Is your RV not set up for winter (with heated pipes, added insulation, etc.)?

Sorry for the thread tangent. I'm an RV guy (not full time yet).
