A few pickups from the weekend…

The vise is an Adams Co #101, unfortunately the mounting base is broken. I figured for 5 bucks it was worth a shot. The Griswold #6 set me back another 2 bucks.

$10 from a private estate sale got me the Stanley 190 rabbet, Fleet DOE, and Nicholson files. The P&C combo and Cman DOE set were $5.

A garage sale yielded the Cman USA combo set, some random Cman combos, and a few little Proto metric combos. And of course I wasn’t going to leave the nozzles behind! $13

This last batch came from the flea, maybe $20 or so for this stuff? About half of that is in the Ward Master and Armstrong rats. I also like the New Britain NDF 82, I haven’t seen many of these.

Always try to stop at a guy's recurring tool sale when I go an hour or so south for a job and usually the guy has some unique stuff like ship mauls and 1890s-1930s stuff. This time he was pretty low on interesting stuff but I still found a few pieces though.

Tuffy screwdriver missing the detent and spray painted black, guy always paints bare metal which makes for an annoying restoration. Almost done with it now and noticed it looks kinda like a light sabre from Star Wars with the half ribbed handle and smooth raised panel that's the 90° handle for torque. Plus the brand has some interesting history.

Powercraft 3/8 round head ratchet with quick release. Second round head I've found with quick release, other being a Proto, but this one uses two bars to force the socket off instead of the same system as quick release pear head and so far appears to be a leading cause of missing 10mms given it launches the socket. Don't know much about powercraft other than their old two plate ratchets were made by Plomb so I'm curious who made this one.

Craftsman 4 inch adjustable wrench, can't tell if it's a keychain or actually a tool with the finish. Hard to see in the pic but it's satin chrome with polished flats.

Imperial refrigerant ratchet, no name 1/4 breaker with a few numbers, Fairmount wrench, Williams open end/flare end combo, mystery hammer with an odd symbol on the side, and a CTT 1/2 manual impact(that's been abused quite a bit) and the socket for it. Ended up being $15 for the lot plus $10 a piece on a Fiskar spade and 15 foot adjustable tree trimmer that isn't easy to get in a pic.

Need to try researching some of this stuff later on but for now everything is getting cleaned up and oiled.

The Powr-Kraft ratchet was made by Thorsen for Monkey Wards. The no name breaker looks Duro/Indestro to me.

Thanks for the info! Seems like decent quality on the ratchet other than the quick launch feature so Thorsen would make sense.

I'll check the numbers on the breaker with confirmed duro/indestro ones and see if there's a match when I get a chance.

My favorite find from this weekend. Swallow airplane co tuffy screwdriver from a retiring stonemason’s sale. Tip still in good shape despite signs of hammering on “the part that goes over the fence last” as my grandpa would say. Excited to use this, went down a rabbit hole reading about these, apparently the Phillips version is kind of rare. Here’s an interesting blog with more info http://sabertoothowl.blogspot.com/2007/01/swallow-airplane-co.html?m=10B9FA968-250C-4937-AD22-CE3CD1DDA272.jpeg

So, three weeks ago I picked up a Pyrene 1-Quart Hand Fire Extinguisher, posted here. It had the well-deserved tarnish of several decades, but was otherwise in great shape. Except... Except for the rough, crusty green-blue stain down one side of what I can only assume was a long-ago Carbon tetrachloride leak. It began to annoy me, so I tried very gently to wash it away. Soap and water, of course, did nothing.
I upped my game to Brasso. Nada. 600 grit sandpaper was showing a little bit of promise but even using care and a wood sanding block I was worried I would scratch it, so I stopped. Back to the Brasso with a little more forcefulness.

As usual, the combination of forcefulness and frustration led to carelessness. When I wiped the Brasso off, I saw some glaring brightness next to the stain. In the words of Ripley to Newt, "I made a clean spot here. Now I've done it. Guess I'll have to do the whole thing."

Grrrr. Went after the stain with the sandpaper then got out the red Tripoli, fired up the Block and buffed everything but the label. I've seen too many brass labels shining like the sun with no hint of ink/paint to bring out the print. I gingerly used a little Blue Magic and then nearly **** myself as all this black started coming off! Cursing, I quickly wiped it off, expecting the worst, only to realize it was just doing a number on the tarnish. Thankful but wary, I went even more gingerly, and stopped when I couldn't trust it or myself anymore. You can see the label doesn't have quite the luster of the canister--but all the black is there!!

Just thought I would share.

Since I'm in a sharing mood, I'll share two great gifts the lovely Mrs. Radar gave to me for my birthday.

First, the complete Archer series (so far). If you've never seen this, do yourself a favor--it's hilarious.

Second, and more relatable to our common predilection here at GJ, a very neat photo light box from Puluz. It's about a 16" cube, so massive scores and larger items won't fit, but it will be great (I hope) for detailed shots of smaller finds. It has a ring of LEDs on the "ceiling" that you can vary in lumens and warmth and you can shoot down from above or from the open side. It also has 12 different colored background drapes (black in photo) and a cloth "diffuser" that goes up against the LEDs in the event I want to "soften" any of the wrenches or other tools that I post. Definitely not something I would have thought to buy myself, but I think I'll get a lot of use out of it.

Nice work on the FE. If you're curious, that brass tag bearing the 2,347,548 patent puts it in late '44 or '45 vintage. If that's the faint outline of a "PAT. PEND" marking on the T handle, which is very common, it means the handle, and quite possibly also the canister, were from early war production and the brass tag was added after the patent was granted. In either case, these Pyrene CTC squirters are popular with WWII jeep guys as "motorpool" class FE's that the Ordnance Dept supplied as replacements for the "factory" class FE's that Willys and Ford supplied. Those were General Fire Truck/General Detroit Corp "S.O.S. Fire Guard" No. BF-100B and the Fyr-Fyter Corp "Fyr-Fyter" No. D-10-A, and a little harder to find.

Thanks Lugz! The mark on the T-handle is a T inside an underlined oval. No idea what it could mean other than possibly the outsourced maker of the cast T-handle.

BTW, I took this shot with a Xenvo 15x macro lens Mrs. Radar got me a couple of years ago. You just clip it on over your smartphone's lens. I agree, she's a definite keeper.

First off, I apologize for the photo quality. But, needs must.

Anyway, I was idly looking through Craigslist - tools, checking for anything interesting, as you never know. And when I spied this ad, a generic "tools for sale, in toolbox" I almost passed it by, as the box didn't interest me. But, looking closely at the first photo, I thought I saw a vintage roll for an ignition set. And then I looked closer at the tools, looked at the price listed, and perked up a little. I also saw that the ad had been listed for a month. Not sure that it would still be for sale, I sent an email off, and he replied that it was still for sale, and he would be available at pretty much any time today. So, OK.

It is literally 50lbs of tools. All 40s-'50s American: Snap-on, Plomb, P&C, Blue Point, Cornwell, Crescent, and who knows what all. See, I haven't had a chance to bring it into the shop yet, as my wife will kill me for lifting it (the surgeon has not released me for 10lbs yet) so it is sitting in the back seat of my truck.

In the end, I paid double for what he was asking, as he didn't have change for a $20.

My bank does $5's, but was out this morning. I meant to stop on the way, and get some Gatorade but forgot. And I don't think spending $20 for all of that was too much, even though he only asked for $10.

In any case, when my wife goes into the office tomorrow, I will bring it all in and take inventory. Probably do a thread on it in the Vintage section, as it is all so old.

We had one of those brass carbon tet pump extinguishers hanging out in the garage when I was growing up in the 1950s.
I think my Mom was the only one who used it -- for spot remover when she was doing laundry/ironing.
