Only one sale today and only $1 spent.
Three 1/4" shank HS rotary files. Only the center one is marked--Fullerton JNR. The other two appear to have been dipped in some plastic-like material--it doesn't look like Plasti-Dip. It's hard, not spongy. Both have use marks on the shanks, but the price was worth the risk.

Would love to see more pics of the bicycle tools.
Yes, I will get them up soon. I'm in the middle of garage reorganization and I have everything stacked all over the place. I have a huge haul from another estate sale sitting in bags on the floor I have to go through.... That ones got a good story!

Speaking about bike tools....when I went out to an estate sale the other weekend, buying a bicycle was the furthest thing from my mind. I thought I'd check on the last day of the sale to see if some Indian artifacts were still around. A guy was already fondling them just as I got to the table a second too late. I see a dusty old bike in the garage, and upon closer inspection, it's one of the nicest custom bikes I've ever seen. Back in the day I had a couple of Hetchins bikes and a Schwinn Paramount. The garage guy notes my interest, I ask and he says $1200 firm. I say thanks and putz in the garage some more. He goads me into making an offer and I throw out $600, thinking they'd tell me to get lost. We go to the head guy inside with the offer, garage guy tries to counter, main guy looks at me and I say "$600, that's it." Main guy says deal and then we talk about bikes, his riding, my riding, my electric bike, etc., etc.

Look at this bike! The Ideale 90 seat and Phil Wood hubs alone are worth $600!

That is a beaut! The lugs on it are spectacular, and can you show us a pic of the head badge?

Yes! When I saw the lugs I thought OMG! someone spent a LOT of time on this frame.

Head badge is just a decal. Apparently James Pickering was a limited production builder from Tucson AZ and only built frames for 4-5 years in the 70s.

On my way home I wandered over to the local Restore, hoping to turn up something interesting. Well, after going through all the tools and hardware and not finding a thing, I decided to take a look from another angle.

A Stanley no. 5 sweetheart and a tommy bar. The plane is interesting as it has a brass tote(?) Does this ring a bell for anyone?

Interesting No 5 bmw. I've never heard of a brass tote. Post it in the 'Show your handplanes' thread. Maybe RTM or CRSINMICH know something.

I'll have to give the full lowdown on this haul (Lugz 2022_3) later, but the highlights are the leather toolbag (honestly, I'm not sure what it was for, but it's heavy duty with side clasps that I have on a later, canvas Signal Corps toolbag, and I can't imagine what else it would be used for), the railroaders tariff book, the "USN Magazine" lock (no key), and the French ignition wrench set.

oooh that padlock
I'm glad somebody is paying attention! :)

It's a little beat up, but it is a beaut, Jeff. (I think I sent you a very similar one in exchange for your services on the stubborn, ill-fated BELL SYSTEM lock, no?)

Finally on the board for 2022...

Spotted this on Craigslist, and responded within the hour. Almost all of it is Craftsman, Mostly G-G2, with some -V- mixed in for certain items (RHFT ratchets, crowfeet, etc). The 3/4 dr are Craftsman Taiwan (but up to 2 3/16"), as well as the impact sockets are off-shore. Not shown are two Craftsman 7/9" grinder/buffers (handheld). Will get a more accurate count in the AM, but it seems like there is almost a full set of shallow/deep SAE/Metric stuff in there. The roll is cold chisels, and is covering a magnetic indicator base.

Total asking price was $75, so figure I will easily get money out of it. Some will be going to friends to help complete their sets, but full sets are easy to sell.

Edit: Pics were from the CL listing.

So finally had a chance to go thru the toolbox. Below is a list of the total stuff in the box. Still no idea of the maker for the toolbox, wondering if it was a manufacturer box for parts.

Circling back on the rest of the haul from this morning, everything else was posted down on the VB, but I have no idea what the No. 2 tool on the far right is. It looks like a dresser, but it has a grinding wheel in it. Not sure what it's for. See Pic 2, 3, & 4. Everything else was posted down on the VB.

Rotary files, burrs, mills, etc. are often dipped in wax or a similar product to keep them sharp and prevent rusting. It should just crack off when you're ready to use them.

Sometimes you get the bear and sometimes the bear gets you. Today the bear got me.
Pictures of the sale items looked very promising--big 40'x32' workshop; tons of woodworking and mechanic tools, both power and hand; precision measuring tools; tool boxes and chests; antique industrial Singer sewing machines; several antique wagon wheel hubs and even a whole antique wagon. Definitely looked good enough to spend an hour on the road each way.
Got there 30 min before opening and was 12th in line, with four ladies in front of me that were sure to search the house first. At opening there were 40-50 people in line.
Instead of letting 10-15 people in at first--which has been the Covid custom around here--they let everyone in at once. I went straight to the precision measuring tools and was immediately disappointed at their poor condition yet Ye Olde Antique Shoppe prices. While I stood there re-calibrating my expectations, the other 30-40 tool shoppers jammed into the place and started Hoovering things up like it was the 75% off day.
I'll be the first to admit I like a bargain and may even be a cheap-skate, but apparently the same can't be said for these Hill Country ranchers. $50 for a so-so Stanley #5 plane--Sold! The wagon wheel hubs looked dry-rotted but were $100 each. I kind of wandered around watching in awe as items with $400 price tags sold. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for the estate--I was just bummed that I drove all the way out there instead of sleeping in.
My "haul" consisted of the $1 Starrett No. 603 rule that I found on a bucket of bolts (it had the no-name US-made metric pocket rule in the sleeve also) and the $2 home-made paddle strop. The 8" steel tube and 10" C channel pieces were $1 each and will be sacrificial parts for my e-tank.
Total $5 but at least $15 more in gas.

14 Jan 22.jpg

One of the few reasonably priced (in my view) items was this 3/4hp CM Crown Block Grinder. $50, but it was so ugly I had to take a picture.

OR That *****! I was wondering if you hit that sale. I'm still waiting on my Covid test results. If I'd had a negative report already I would have been there and been even more bummed after making a 2-hour drive to the sale. Did you happen to see and remember what they wanted for the Craftsman gray & red toolbox stack and either of the two anvils I spotted in the sale pics?

Sorry to hear about the Covid exposure! The Craftsman stack looked okay and was listed at $100 on the top box. Can't say if that price was for both. On the down side, neither I nor the agent could get more than one of the roller's drawers open. The 112lb anvil was priced at $400. The 15lb anvil was only $20 and I missed it by less than a second. I thought of you when I saw the planes and chisels. The planes were in decent shape but at $45 for the small ones and $65 for the larger, too rich for me. The chisels I saw were from off-shore.

Too bad, OR. It's rare to see so many eager buyers paying top dollar for schlock, but maybe that means stuff you're buying to flip will go for more on the Craigslist/FB Marketplace apps. That block grinder is garish, indeed!

No good prospects nearby for me, and besides, spending the last week trying to get my garages organized and cleaned out has been a powerful appetite suppressant. I just finished making a pile in one bay of all the **** I want to sell/flip, and it'll likely take me a full 8 hours to sort, photograph and advertise it all. Almost makes me want to put out a free-at-curb-side box just to get some of the lower end items out of my way.

Friday Goodies !

This seller always has quality stuff so I got to him early in the day.
Picked up a Jowika Camper's Knife, made in Ireland and 2 die makers squares.
A Starrett and a Moore and Wright, that one was made in Sheffield England and is going to The Craptain.
Took home the group of gimlets and a real clean plumb bob and 2 clean oil cans.

I have bought from him before and he remembered me and gave me a good price on all of it.
$40 , I love the Fridays sales.

Yesterday I hit an interesting estate sale, not tools so much, but the accumulated whole just looked interesting. Picked up a few items while I was there:
51820081372_10af7a35e3_c.jpg
Tea crate, interesting saw handle, lamp parts, homemade screwdriver, Mexican salt and pepper shakers, Atkins keyhole saw, Edison Mazda lamp tin, punches and sets (Starrett and Stanley), Morrill saw set, leather sewing awl, and an old leather belt for scraps.

Today I started at a hoarders estate, which was pretty disappointing, as it was mostly harbor freight level junk. I did manage to find a few things though:
51821155478_9afb1d21c7_c.jpg
Small Stanley stapler and staples, dragonfly eye viewing glass, Williams adjustable, Wizard DBE, Armstrong extension, Kraueter and Indestro sockets, and a set of Dunlap needle files. The Plomb speeder came from a garage sale I stopped at afterwords.

I then hit another garage/vintage sale. Decent prices but not too much I was interested in. I did manage too find the following:
51821157383_15e6862567_c.jpg
Antique folding chair and vintage desk lamp.

My favorite used book dealer is having a massive consolidation sale, so I swung by, where I picked these up:
51821167173_1ee48274f2_c.jpg=
The Wells book is from 1925, and the Williams catalog is from 1937.

I also spent a bit of time over the last couple of days looking at antique malls. Not to shop in, but to set up a booth. I love garage sale hunting, and I might as well make a profit at it. So you probably won't see me list what I paid anymore because I don't want to jinx myself.

I'm finally on the board for 2022, it's been a ghost town around here for estate and yard sales. I had to resort to Offerup for this tool box, I was pleasantly surprised when the seller was communicative and kept his commitments, my experience up to this point on Offerup has not been good.

Anyway here's the box, an old Craftsman heritage roller that's been unfortunately spray bombed. I got it mostly disassembled today and all of the sheet metal is in pretty good shape, the worst spot is on the top where the PO caulked a pad to the top which trapped moisture. Still mostly just surface rust though! Now I just gotta figure out how to get this stupid black paint off.

The PO of this box was a Boeing employee, he definitely had a penchant for modifying tools and he also screwed a bunch of trays into the drawers of the box.

IMG_3666.jpg

IMG_3668.jpg

It had some stuff in it, here's a few of the piles of stuff, the top pic I'll keep for the most part other than the interesting aluminum gizmos which I assume are aviation specific.

IMG_3651.jpg

IMG_3657.jpg

Here are the two boxes of stuff going to goodwill:

IMG_3656.jpg

IMG_3658.jpg

And last a couple of kinda cool pieces of Boeing ephemera along with a Sturtevant torque calculator and an old book of matches from a long gone grocery store.

Looking grim here locally - and to add insult to injury -Yesterday the Porta-Shop was "on time to be delivered" TODAY.

NOW its:

And infuriating. Somehow, I don't think 'We think it's somewhere close to its destination at some undefined stage 3 facility, but we have no idea when it will get there or why it's delayed' is what management or shareholders want the graphic to convey!

At least with USPS Tracking you can kinda sorta tell when it's hit a regional warehouse, a local PO, and even the truck. I've had some interesting international tracking, though. That Tona set I got recently was in Slovakia for weeks, and then I watched it suddenly change to 'out for delivery' as if it went from Bratislava to my front porch in a day. It just never got logged in anywhere between their customs, US customs, the USPS facilities at LaGuardia or Kennedy, or the regional facility.

I'm just distracting you. I know it can be nerve wracking. Hope it arrives soon.

That *****! And not in a good way. Last year, I had a similar situation. Local Postmaster told me, "it was likely sitting in a distribution warehouse with too many packages to process. Could take weeks to sort out." I did get the package, but long after I should have. You might want to screen shot this to your seller on fleabay. Let them do the legwork for finding it.....

Sometimes you get the bear and sometimes the bear gets you.
And sometimes Ol' Ephraim appears in the form of a skunk, which I only barely narrowly avoided this morning with this single tool haul (Lugz 2022_4).

20220115_085444.jpg20220115_085529.jpg

As I always say, if you're only going to come home from the flea market with one thing, it had better be good. When it's 15*F, I can count the vendors and shoppers on two hands and feet, and that one thing is not too common GMTK spec correct Fairmount 8" combination slip-joint pliers with acceptable wartime logo, it's going in the (wets index finger, makes 'chalking it up' gesture... ) 'good' column.

Temps close to 10°F with wind chill driving it easily below 0°F, but MrsLS and I suited up for the Jacktown engine show, an outdoor venue mitigated by bonfire and sunny skies.
Despite a lack of labeling, I think I may have got my hands on a Bonney MB76 2-drawer box. Also bought 7/8” Bonney forged tee wrench, Duro 1/2dr ratchet, Albertson & Co Sioux City IA valve lapper, C’man ballpein, and two Utica pliers (not visible). $26 for all.
