I had the kind of haul (Lugz 2022_11) at the flea market that would make me say, 'I had a GREAT day, even if I do say so myself,' and judging only by my own standards. Which is funny because I almost didn't go. Saturdays are not the best, usually Fridays and Sundays, and I'm kind of into a good novel right now, but it was 60* F at 0730, and it's supposed to snow tomorrow, believe it or not.

But I'll have to itemize it - and tell a funny story - later.

For now, go ahead and guess what zazzed my zing the most.

Is that a Williams ratchet or Vulcan? That would be my choice, although some cool finds there.

I need to do a little catching up from this week's sales.

Thursday was a pretty good day.

First sale I found an almost compete S-K No. 4347 set from the early '50s. It's a combination set with 1/2" drive and included the 1/4d No. 4097 set. I initially saw all the sockets lined up in order on the table and planted myself in front of it to ward off interlopers. I then saw the 1/4" box and grabbed that. Next came the 10" extension and I ask for a price as the garage monitor walked by. He said $12 for the 1/2" set and $3 for the 1/4" set. I immediately scooped them all into my bag. A little more rooting around turned up the rest of the drive tools and a 13/16 deep socket--but as usual, no cross bar. Of course, my definition of "the set" and the agent's was different. When he saw that I had gathered up the drive tools, he started adding additional dollar figures. "Yeah but, yeah but, they're part of "the set!" I lost that point, but after some negotiation, we settled on $20 for the 1/2d set while the 1/4d set remained at $3. I also mentioned that these tools would most likely have come in a flat green metal case and did he have that somewhere? No luck. When I got home I noticed the 13/16 socket was from a later period but I had a replacement. The 1/4 set is missing the 5/16 socket and I still need to check my extras for that.

The second sale didn't have much I was interested in and when I saw this I forgot about whatever that might have been...

10 Feb 22a.jpg

They had it marked as $50 for "the set"--there's that term again!! Looking inside, about a third of the things in there were not Mossberg. I went to find the guy in charge and explained I was interested in the set but not all of it. He sent one of his guys to see what I was talking about. He took a quick glance at it and said they didn't concern themselves about specific makers and the box and the tool it contained were $50. Perturbed by the flunky's attitude, I went back to 'splane it to the boss again. He had a much more congenial attitude and accepted my offer of $30 minus the shiny tools I wasn't interested in. Sold.

10 Feb 22b.jpg

Researching, I read Lugz's account of another couple of No.82 sets back in 2018. My set is complete minus a "connector box" which I would dearly love to see a picture of, since I don't know what that is. The gentle cleaning I've given the universal and the ratchet adapter (lower left) have been quite successful.

Also in the box, (but not shiny!) were the Snap on No. 71 ratchet (Patent Applied For), the Owatonna hinge handle and the Armstrong S-140 universal.

The North Bros. (Stanley Div.) Yankee ratcheting Phillips and the Snap-on No. 5 were $2 each from the same sale. I thought initially the SO had an E code but it is probably a 1963 block 3.

OK, Kent-Moore is the brand? Function? Purpose?
Brand. Kent-Moore Organization (KMO) is a peripheral automotive specialty service tool maker. Not quite as long as K.R. Wilson. More like a Miller Mfg. One of those companies that caters to Detroit. I don't know the function. I would guess big drain plug or something else that does not require a lot of torque.

Haha. I KNEW you were going to say that. I've been waiting all day - where the hell have you been?! It's the only thing I haven't posted or said anything about yet. Vulcan B-59.

Feel free to post it on my thread when you're ready. The decal is MUCH more vivid than mine, which is the only Mossberg No. 82 set I know of on GJ. I'll answer questions there. Oh, and...

Not to keep bogarting the thread but I never told my story and I never posted LEFT-BEHINDs..

THE STORY

As I am walking around the flea market, I notice a kid in his 20's walking around about the same pace and in the same direction as me, lugging a large Shop-Vac. Sometimes I would pass him as he stopped at a table I was not interested in, and sometimes he would pass me. It was not a small Shop-Vac and he was moving it from one arm to the next, or sort of hipping it, if you know what I mean, at times. When I made my way up to one of the three Estate Liquidator places (no tables, everything on the ground), I had just started looking around when he walked up, and we finally ended up at the same place at the same time for the first time, and I heard him say to the vendor, "Would you be interested in a trade for this Shop-Vac. I saw it on You-Tube and I thought I'd try it."

Naturally, I thought he had bought it at the flea market and was hauling it around with him instead of paying for it and having the vendor put it aside for him to pick up later, like normal people do.

The vendor, not understanding, said, "You saw the Shop-Vac on You-Tube?"

"No, no," the kid explained. "I saw a guy on You-Tube take things to the flea market to trade instead of paying with cash."

'That's a first,' I thought to myself, which is more or less the kind of thing everyone who was rummaging around in the area said to each other.

I was expecting the vendor to guffaw and tell him he's trying to get rid of things, not get more stuff to haul home, but he surprised me and asked the kid if there was anything particular he had in mind.

The kid said, "I don't know, I didn't look yet, I'm just going around asking first."

To which the vendor told him to go ahead and look around and he would let him know depending on the thing.

I was already bored and I moved on before I found out if the kid ever made a trade for anything with him or anyone else, but it was the strangest thing I had seen in awhile.

That’s funny Lugz. Probably a garbage picked vacuum.

Nice ratchet. The bent handle is one I still don’t have. Had the feeling it was Vulcan.

This morning I made a mental list of a few sales to check out. An estate sale, final day of sale. Good prices but not much left. I’ll have to post my couple finds.

Next, a yard sale close by the house. Yesterday I passed a million YS signs everywhere during work, so I was jonesing to go somewhere. Found one wrench.

Last...I planned on a third sale with tools, which I had no idea turned out to be a community sale. I got sucked into the parking and checking out every sale...probably about a dozen..and for the most part they sucked! Maybe two nice sales but shoppers were hitting those hard. No one was offering much in tools.

I found myself making three trips back to the neighbor’s sale. For 50 bucks I got a nice quantity of these to mess with and barely had to leave home. I couldn’t beat that deal and the convenience of it even If they were free elsewhere.

Even if you take the Mossberg out of the equation, you **** on the S-K. If your S-K tools would have come with this box it would be almost complete. The 1/4“ set only had a few more sockets, no ratchet. 1D610E03-F0E0-4495-B634-62A47D1FD4BE.jpeg9813E64A-E538-4BE7-BA5F-BA96E33365A4.jpeg

Thanks. Available for trade if you want it. You already know what I want in return! I will even sweeten the deal with other Williamsy things. :)
Thanks. Maybe, just maybe if I were desperate to change some hard to reach spark plugs or bolts, I would consider. :ROFLMAO:

I’m not sure if you know it though, but I have this really, really neat adjustable wrench, that has this really handy dandy adjustment screw on the side, that looks really good where it is. :ROFLMAO:

Haha. Oh yeah, right, since when did you start actually needing a use for all of the gazillion ratchets you have in redundant drive sizes! :) But okay, I give up now. I find a Vulcan ratchet I know you, Mr. Ratchet, don't have - sure it would do the trick, and it's still not enough!

picked up a Stanley Tools catalog(Great !) ...

Congrats RV! Are you a Stanley woodworking tool collector/user/both?

DIL is just 3 months along, but these kids these days want to know everything right away! We always preferred the surprise.
We were the same way Lugz. And both our kids were like your DIL. I was hoping to hear how the kid w/the vacuum story worked out. I can't believe you shorted us on that ending!

OR You **** on the S-K kits for $23! Keep it up and I'm gonna make good on my promise to head south! :p

Slow weekend here. Hit two worthless estate sales Sat morn then had to get back home to make a sell of my own. From that perspective it was a good weekend.

Been a long weekend, hitting garage sales, estate sales, and such. Here is the breakdown, starting Friday.
51880466968_ac656ef079_c.jpg
An estate sale, that seemed to have more in the pics than was there when I arrived, much more, suspiciously more... Anyway, I ended up going twice, picking up the following: Pocket Tacklebox, Bonney wrench, Park cassette tool, Ford V8/Lincoln Zepher distributer tool, Lufkin box, English bicycle tool, VAR cone wrench, Bicycle Research cone wrench, and a pair of PAR-X wrenches. The pick of the liter is the VAR wrench. Oh, also this box
51879177287_fdd2096bb3_c.jpg
A Duplex machinist box. A little more beat up than I like, but I couldn't leave it behind.

Next was another estate sale:
51880710969_98bbc0a378_c.jpg
A partial Thorsen set, a pick set, and a sixties Wilson A2170.

Saturday was a GS day. Started with a tool garage sale:
51880393346_dd22dd6d5b_c.jpgCornewll, DOE, Herbrand Tapet wrench, Armstrong and Craftsman DBE, a socket tray, and a small driver.

Wierd garage sale (tweakers clearing **** out?)
51881038705_db2672b3d3_c.jpg
Mossberg inch/pound torque driver, Stevens Walden impact set in a very cool box (missing the 1/2 and 7/16), Blue Point DBE, Opinel #9, Park chain breaker.

Next was a Restore (one of my favorites):
51880696319_29788595c0_c.jpg
New Britain swivel, Lutz handle, Williams tappet, Herbrand combo, Cornwell DBE.

Lastly, I went to the Estate sale I hit on Thursday, hitting half price day:
51879434187_568c9e9615_c.jpg
Cork gasket material, Weaver tip-off scope rings, Brass box, socket rail. And, to top it off:
51881049475_89d9d1bfc7_c.jpg
Vintage swag lamp for parts.

Altogether, a good weekend.

Did some driving around this weekend and did not meet my goal of not buying large piles of **** just because they were *kinda* cheap. Got a few things I liked but also acquired several large sorting/uncompleted set projects, I don't know why I do that to myself! Oh well, on to the pics:

First was a garage sale that the guy was throwing while his real estate agent was doing an open house...of course he offered me all the tools on the table for $40 so instead of just taking what I needed I grabbed everything that was USA made for $13. And now I have another pile of Craftsman to organize and complete. I also got a cool old Carhartt jacket from him with a bunch of Mopar patches but figured that didn't really fit on a tool post.

Lots of craftsman wrenches...

IMG_3763.jpg

And sockets. The little proto ratcheting wrench I liked.

IMG_3764.jpg

Next up was an old farm house with a lot of potential but very high prices. Also not much in the way of tools, here's what I dragged out of the shed, $7 I think for these: The little ratchet is marked New Britain (NBM), but no USA stamp. Anyone know if this is USA made? Looks very similar to my 1/4 husky stuff. The Plomb 3435? was a nice surprise but unfortunately has had one end ground on both faces.

IMG_3762.jpg

Today I elected to stop by an estate sale that I had previously avoided due to lack of pictures for anything tool related. When reading through the description again I saw that they mentioned "some" tools so I gave it a shot since I was planning to hit a few mini swap meets in the area. They had a few bins full of stuff downstairs and when I saw all of the challenger wrenches I figured they were all part of a set and just grabbed them all. Of course there were a ton of duplicates and no complete set, I should have take the time to go through them before I checked out.

The worse part was that I waited in line for quite a bit and even though it was half price day they counted every piece I had and wanted to charge me $60 some dollars for all of it. At that point I was going to put all the Challenger stuff back but when they knocked it down to $40 I paid up. I'm not too thrilled with the deal but there were a few things other than the Challenger wrenches that I don't see often.

Here's the challenger, 3-4 multiples in a number of the smaller sizes, the duplicates are piled above their size in the laid out set.

IMG_3766.jpg

Here's the stuff that made the sale worth it and took a bit of the sting off my ineptitude with the wrenches, 4 different Proto adjustables, 3 plastic handle drivers and 3 9704s.

IMG_3768.jpg

Also some SK stuff in nice shape and a few other bits.

IMG_3767.jpg

Finally, there are a few impromptu swaps that show up when it's sunny and I try to go by when I'm down south as you never know what you'll find. I spent around $10 for this stuff, of course neither of the ratchets work but I'm hoping I can get them running. The big P&C is a 2232.

I'll ask around next time I'm there. Or maybe he'll be back with an air conditioner or something.

Husky was an NB brand after 1934.
I also got a cool old Carhartt jacket from him with a bunch of Mopar patches but figured that didn't really fit on a tool post.
As long as it's not a pink size 1 Carhartt jacket onesy with a spitup bib and tiny little Mopar patches (see post #1, end of rule 4), you're okay. :) Seriously, what Outlaw said, and the patches make it more automotive than alot of things that I and others sometimes stretch the theme and limit on.

saukit--No one here will attempt to constrain or restrain you or your urges to procure shiny (or rusty!) bits of metal. And as Outlaw and Lugz pointed out anything but baby clothes bought at a yard/garage/estate/rummage sale or found at the curb or in the road is fair game. Even though I shy away from newer CM myself, and would have contented myself with the Long C items, no one can deny that's a big pile of tools for $13--so you ****!

Outlaw Thanks for posting pics of your camp setup! I did not see the jacuzzi though. But seriously that looks like some comfortable camping. The older I get the more and more I like it as comfortable as possible.

Here's the jacket, all the kids are buying these things for way more than they're worth so I was happy to get it for $20. I'm not a Mopar guy but this guy had a beautiful Dodge Challenger sitting in his driveway, and he was antsy to get all his stuff sold so he could move it back inside. Kinda ironic given my challenger wrench saga later in the weekend :ROFLMAO:

Yup the kids/hipsters love the carhartt right now 🙄. A bit ironic given that it is workwear and most of those kids are not using it for work😂. Around here they love the beanies and the pants rolled up so they look like loggers 🙄. I get weird looks from them when I wear my carhartt with ripped knees or paint or grease stains on my clothes😂👍. It’s like they have never seen what real work clothes look like in their natural environment 😂

I picked this up this weekend at an auction. It’s in really good, barely used condition.
Any guesses as to the age? The graphics on the lid looks like 60’s to 70’s to me.

A little Googling never hurts, but in this case, didn't really help. I found some of the same kit (same graphics), seemed to be model 8200, with claims (from sellers) that they were from the 60s, but nothing definitive (like a dated catalog, magazine ad, etc.).

Looks amazing, though!
