ok... my follow up post.. I call this technique:

"Are you gonna eat that?"
It is a technique that has yielded some good deals recently at estate sales. I buy some items at asking price if they will throw in the odds and ends that I am looking at. I end up getting the scraps, the junk, the leftovers that nobody wants thrown in.
At the Estate sale this weekend, I bought the vise and paid their (reasonable asking price). But, in return for paying full price ... hmmm. would you throw in some of these dust covered things that nobody else seems to be looking at? How about that rusty old ratchet in a broken wooden box? Oh there is an old screwdriver and some little pliers in there. And how about these old broken wooden boxes, because I might be able to use some of the wood to fix up that box the ratchet is in.... the ratchet set was really only filthy, not even rusted.

The old busted up wooden boxes and scraps look very promising after a quick cleanup....
20220307_175829.jpg20220307_182306.jpg
a quick cleaning with 0000 steel wool and some GoJo hand cleaner... it still needs more work, a little glue-up and some bees wax... but it is promising. I originally grabbed only for the wood, now I plan to keep it.

20220307_184413.jpg
and while I had the GoJo out... I wiped off the scraps... they will get put to good use.
20220307_184515.jpg
another way to get "age appropriate" wood... is (******?) wait... NO! I mean ... well... maybe... but... wow.. umm.. buy old table leaves from long gone oak dining tables. They also often go for free to a couple of bucks.

Saukit,
There is that S-K 7/8” socket you needed and you found it in the wild!👍
Nice Visegrip roll. I’ve run across a couple of those.
-Don
Yeah, for once I actually looked at the list on my phone of what I needed instead of grabbing every socket in the bucket. :ROFLMAO: Also needed the 1/2" so I have a whole set now! Thanks for posting your vice grip sets, I was wondering if the skinny pouch was supposed to have something in it...

Sometimes when I bid on auctions with bad, fuzzy pictures I get good deals. Sometimes, not so much.
A box of pipe/ monkey wrench handles. Most are missing the moving jaws.
There is a complete rusty Ridgid 10" pipe wrench and a Stillson with the wooden handle missing.

I think I’m doing this right, thought I’d share my tool haul from a recent estate sale, and ask for help identifying the manufacturer of this colorful vise.
Chisels and carving tools are in excellent condition. I lucked up while there and met a fellow who was sitting on a bunch of new 10yr old stock Craftsman tools and toolboxes. I picked up a work bench from him.

It’s discontinued no instructions anywhere but somehow the hardware remained after all these years! I pieced it together the way I think it was supposed to look and added my own wood top. This thing is a dandy!

The Footprint chisels were $15, Craftsman chisels and Sorby tools I snagged for $20 and got the work bench for $40. Never in my life scored such sweet deals!

"Crusader" was a private label brand sold by Belknap Hardware & Mfg. Co.

Crusader / (see Belknap Hardware) / at least one known example manufactured by Barcalo see https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=8321274#post8321274 /

Belknap / Belknap Hardware & Mfg. Co., Louisville, KY / "Blue Grass" "Crusader" / http://www.hangoutstorage.com/banjo...rchived/files/belknap-history-54179132014.pdf / http://www.collectors-of-schrades-r.us/belknap/ /

Interestingly, your Belknap Hardware & Mfg. Co., "Crusader" branded vise sports the ubiquitous "symbol formerly known as an asterisk" and trademarked by Peck Stow & Wilcox of Southington, Connecticut. (TM 359484 - see attached)
Unless I'm mistaken, Peck Stow & Wilcox was a competitor of Belknap.
Perhaps another member here can explain. ;)

(* or was PS&W selling "Crusader" branded product? o_O )

(edit: attached a couple examples of "Crusader" documentation. sorry, no vises among them.)

On my phone, I wasn't sure what the handles were. Thought they were something else. All I really saw was the 2 more or less complete wrenches
The ridgid wrench is worth what I paid for the whole lot.

SWMBO and I were out near another ReStore today and gave it a try. Very little in the way of tools, but I grabbed two brand new scrapers out of boxes of dozens plus two sander sponges, all for about three bucks. SWMBO found six drawer pulls she liked for twice that. We were out the door for under $10.

So my dollar copy at the local university library booksale was a good deal-- but I knew that when I grabbed it. And my wife got the first edition for me for Christmas when it first came out.

We went to an estate sale today put on by a company we usually avoid due to high prices but I spotted a couple of interesting items in the sale’s pictures.

@Username already in use will appreciate the irony in a few of today's flea finds (Lugz 2022_16).
(Maybe I should tell you something is uncommon more often if I'm going to onefellswoop three of them the next day! :)) Coolest find, maybe all year so far (my book) is the NUMBERALL rotating punch. The NOS Armstrong box has drill press wedges in it. Blue-point center punch. BHM DBE.

Lugz What's the wrench/caliper looking thing above the number punch? And I'm drawing a complete blank on what a "drill press wedge" is.

Good question. I don't know! Some kind of quick clamp or gauge. It slides on that beam and you lock it in with the set screw. No graduated measurement markings. It was in a metal box with a 1960s era Navy label and markings, along with the punches, but I think the PO was just re-purposing it for smalls.

Drifts and set-ups. Milling machine maybe more accurate with these.

I'd guess small quick clamp, though the cuts on the moving jaw look quite decorative, so maybe typesetting?

With just a wingnutt, not a lot of clamping force, so maybe just holding 5x somethings together while its stamped? So many options. Almost simple enough to be shop made.

Well, it does have a rule, of sorts. Depth, apparently, on the jaws. That's 1 inch, in 8ths, from the throat. Judging by the owner's marks (W. BARR), maybe the former Attorney General was using it to measure his [I could think of a few clever things to insert here, but don't want to get banned!]

Is there another initial in there between W and Barr?

Seeing it apart, nicely made. With the style of the marks, line and a terminus, makes me think it is quite a bit older than both of us combined.

Hmm, Wilson Barr invented some check printing and recording machines around the 1900s. None are a clamp, but there was an M Barr who patented a clamp and other printing and engraving devices Hoping he wouldn't get his own initial wrong.

Okay, enough chasing down rabbit holes and avoiding work. I really should get something done today.

I had a great day an estate sale today. My dad and I picked up this 1975 10 drawer Craftsman red and grey chest with a 1970 MBC Century 7 drawer bottom with fair amount of tools for $95. We got an old B&D impact, an Ingersoll Rand butterfly impact, bunch of US made impact sockets, pre/during war Plomb and Blackhawk sockets, an incomplete Craftsman 1/2 deep set with heritage logo on the box, and a Powr-Kraft 1/4 set with Craftsman and Thorsen ratchets. Also two perfect handle screwdrivers which are the first I've ever seen in person so I got those although I did pay more than I would have liked. $123 for the rest of the stuff.
While I was cleaning the top box a cold front started to come in and it looked like rain was coming so I had to close up the shop quickly, and that's why the pictures are a bit hurried. It's going to take me a while to get through everything. The one thing that's bugging me is that I can't remember who made those spiral handled screwdrivers like the one in the last picture.

plus 4 pipe wrenches, 3 ball peens, a few old Williams wrenches, two Jorgensen bar clamps and a bunch of other stuff.
What a haul - love those V-Groove pattern wrenches!

Lesserstore, great haul!
There were two sales today that mentioned tools. The first was an estate sale and I was pleasantly surprised by how many tools were available and how low prices were.E6A0E178-46EC-4788-B657-6CD587610AB7.jpeg
