Jake’s Flea Mkt opens next weekend. Bored after the long famine, I spent $5 to enter the Supergiganticgaragesale at Allentown Fairgrounds this morning. $14 more brought home a No1041B Bonney doe, Snap-on ratcheting dbe, Switzerland-mfd rasp w/ USA handle, a few Mossberg stamped-steel does, and a Harrold parrot-head pliers. Not much else caught my eye.64EA1722-8E89-4547-B0CE-546801FD9384.jpeg

Yesterday, I hit my first estate sale in ages. Intentionally went later in the day (other commitment...), and was not surprised when someone had already scooped up the WW2 vintage .50 cal ammo can in the pre-sale pics.

Major addition was some stuff from HJE which isn't really appropriate for this thread, plus the CDs. Think that's the first time I've seen Zeppelin CDs at a sale. Details in thumbnail.

Only "real" tool purchase was a Starrett No. 135 3.5" level, in the box. Expensive enough that I balked, until I saw eBay asking prices. Glad to get it home and rub it with my Flitz cloth (just residue, no fresh Flitz), as it shined right up.

Pair of American brass locks, US marked. Use the same key, which was nice.

400 and 600 wet or dry paper, just in time to redo a steering wheel, perfect!

Set of heavy measuring spoons, which I'd planned to throw in the camping gear. At checkout, the lady told me they're shaped to go into the round spice bottles. SCORE - they go to the kitchen!

LL Bean flannel shirt.

Chineseum drill press vise.

Estate sale this morning. Wish I could have been there yesterday. Pretty much picked through but after some digging I found a few things. $5 for everything. Nice.

Stopped in on the first day of a 3-day sale. Mostly mancave stuff, but all ridiculously pre-priced. The back yard was full of surplus highway signs marked at $150-$300 each. I left empty handed and nothing I saw will bring me back on Sunday, either. Best of luck to the seller.

I see some of those around here, but usually in a business (antique stores, flea markets). The home-based sales around me don't seem to have much of any tools lately.

I didn’t go back to the car swap meet today, instead I went to a couple flea markets about an hour away from home. First one was pretty lame but I did pick up a couple things there.

Bonney wrench and sockets and a Craftsman socket I thought I needed.

At the 2nd flea things got a little more interesting.

2 Toyota wrenches for my son in law

A Snappy 3/8” nut driver, Blackhawk and New Britain ignition wrenches, Blackhawk combo, Armstrong DOE, USN Superwrench combo, Easco DOE, Herbrand combo, and sockets by MOPAR, Indestro Super, Blackhawk, Bonney, and Cornwell.

Good but odd day today.

I pulled into the flea market with a flat tire. Warning light on the dash. Step out and tire’s hissing. I said screw it, I’m enjoying myself first!

I made the rounds and found a bunch of things.

Later on when I was about ready to get to business I hit up the porta-john to relieve myself first. Man, I wouldn’t let my worst enemy’s dog use this particular john!:puke:

I then remembered there’s too much junk in my car. “Oh look, a hobby train dealer.“ “Hey sir, would you be interested in a _xyz train piece?” I sold him a Lionel piece that I paid $1 for weeks ago at a random yard sale. He looked it up in his guide book and everything and offered me $15. Sold! Glad to get it out my car, and happy he offered that much.

So my car was parked in the field. Tire entirely flat. A small screw was the culprit. Decided a plug was difficult but possibly doable while on the car.

Moved her into position with little room to get at the tire.
Then I set up shop with the dog’s blanket on the ground to keep ants off me and got to work. I know some people were probably like “Man, this guy’s a die hard flea marketer camping out in in the parking lot!”

Didn’t go too bad getting it plugged.

The day’s haul:
Little rusty, little dirty, partial 1/2” Kobalt SAE and metric socket sets, the Williams made version. I like those. Seller‘s bin was marked $1 and I was ready to pay $1 each. I asked if that was his price. He goes “I wish!” He charged me $6 for the Kobalt pile plus two others.

Random sockets of the day are TRW, Plomb, S-K, Snap-On+ ext., Stanley (Mac) +ext., Mac, a d Husky spinner.

Utica ignition plier.

Ratchets are Matador Germany (no plug) 1/2 , Vulcan 3/8, Thorsen 3/8, and Duro-Chrome reefer.

Wrenches are Snap-On BP 12” adjustable, Snap-On, Armstrong, Bluebrass, Bonney, Mac, and Craftsman 6 incher.

Also, a couple of mystery boxes!

Barely started hitting the yard sales last weekend. There was a whole lot of not much. Didn’t take many pics of what I got.
Was only able to break away for about an hour this morning before the tree service I hired started cutting, and it was yard sale insanity out there! Made two stops. Normal fare I guess. No vises out there😕

Mystery socket box #1:

A mixture of 3/8 and 1/4 Chromium Vanadium sockets (all Duro made) with a 3/8 breaker bar and cross bar. The bar is unmarked, but reminds me of a Bog with it’s offset drive sq..

1/2” Blackhawk set with one Indestro. I‘m not sure if the box is correct or not. Really nice condition stuff.

Needless to say the flat tire didn’t ruin my time!

Hit another sale today. Scored this Milwaukee metal chop saw and this caulking chisel display someone made. I was really hoping the ceiling chisel was a plomb and I was right! $24 total

Here are the last few days of pickups, first one is from last weekend but I never got around to posting it.

Dragged my kids to a sale that I'd been to the day before in order to grab this little challenger box, turned out to have some decent stuff in it in addition to the Duro Chrome breaker and Penncraft rat. There are a couple Snap on E sockets, Plomb, Long C, and Challenger plus a few random others. Also grabbed a bunch of wrenches, a Plomb screwdriver, and more sockets. I can't remember exactly how much I paid for this, $23ish maybe?

IMG_3880.jpg

Next batch - Proto rat is LA, got the 60 1/2 and #4 pretty cheap, hoping they clean up well. More wrenches also
IMG_3881.jpg

Another estate sale haul, they had a lot of this stuff bagged up so I bought some stuff that I probably wouldn't have otherwise. Anyone know whats going on with the Plomb t handle looking thing? Home made I assume, isn't the label for a DBE? Anyway, all this plus the next pic was around $35 if I remember correctly.
IMG_3884.jpg

Also grabbed a bunch of Wards Masters at that same sale, some dual branded SK - Lectrolite as well.
IMG_3883.jpg

This sale was a guy cleaning out his dad's place, he allowed me to pick some tools out of the toolbox even though he had it listed as a package deal. He had a specific use for the big Snap on 27mm but couldn't remember what it was...is this a common size for something? 15 bucks on this set.
IMG_3885.jpg

Dug this batch of stuff out of a big tote after a guy buying the tool boxes dumped all the drawers out. I spent quite a while looking for missing Walden ignition wrenches but unfortunately came up empty. $15.
IMG_3886.jpg

Some interesting little Snap on bits in this bunch, everything moving down from the black oxide DBE's is SO. The longer black oxide extension is Armstrong. $10 on this. This sale had some excitement as a guy fell down outside and I helped the estate sale people get him off the ground. Had to get the first aid kit out of the car, but fortunately he was just scraped up and hadn't hit his head or anything bad.
IMG_3888.jpg

And finally some random stuff from several sparse sales and a ReStore. The hunting knife is JC Higgins and the folder is Kamp King. The big combo is Billings and the hand drill is a Craftsman.

Holy Crud you guy are killing it! I thought I had a decent day. Guess not!

I followed up with a strenuous day packing more of my mom's stuff, and helping her sort decades of paperwork for keep, shred, recycle...

But the Yard sales:

First one was gold:

$12 for this old oak machinist box - Missing 6 corner caps (I'm pretty sure I have them) and the front cover. Drawers need felt mostly but all work fine! Similar to a Pilloid, but different joinery was used. also the Drawers ride on metal guide attached to the sides of the box - Odd.

An Optimus 324! Seems like it should fire right up! Pumps and holds pressure! Schrade Folder, threading die and Stock, Mini Skeleton keys, Brass "Tin", Pin/Clip (issued to marines even today), Lt. Bars and a couple of campaign ribbons, a glass battleship, and a Winchester collectors Tin, and it has the knives!

Only one other stop produced:

I bought the small paper cutter, and the glass ashtray, (I have 4 like this now - I use them as coasters. 2 were my dads, back in the day.), old school Mech pencil and pointer, Plastic capsule, 4 alligator clips, a 25 ft roll of aluminum, and a green prize. the book was free. (71-72)

Dang, saukit, you find plenty of cool stuff. We went to a community garage sale that was almost a complete waste of time netting one small Fairmount DBE wrench, next was an estate sale that was picked over that produced just a couple of squares. The last sale was close to home. Although it was expensive, I found a partial Thorsen set that was very close to the one I received for Christmas when I was 15. There were a few other finds as well.

It was an infrastructure kind of day today. One neighborhood sale yielded nothing except 4000 steps and a few familiar people, and some garden things.

A late starting storage clean out from several weeks ago popped back up, and she had moved enough junk out to see a few interesting things. First off saw a double stack of Ikea wood shelves, without the upright pieces. I have a double wide pair in the garage now, and like them for their size, so bought 10 more shelves to build another double wide set. Then saw a made in US Harper pneumatic tire hand cart, 600# capacity, but a reinforced nylon frame. Bit of rust on the tongue, so did a quick primer coat while cleaning the layers of dust off it. Also saw a few pairs of Ikea desk trestles ( think wimpy adjustable height saw horses), so grabbed two, great for temporary table for certain projects, like rescreening, box cleanup, etc. Lastly, saw an 8' Keller aluminum ladder, which will make roof maintenance less of a hassle, hidden behind a 6' tall shelf of junk. Moved some stuff from the side, and slid it out the door.

Ladder strapped to the truck roof rack, hand cart stacked on top of the shelves, and the trestles strapped on top of a bag of dog food, we drove the 2 miles home.

Also have a promise to get first dibs to pick up three more sets of shelves, one Metro style, two heavy garage style, after she thins the herd out a bit further, when she gets the stuff on it stuff sold or destined to move. GF was making nice with the hostess, so hope the promise holds up. Don't really have space for more shelves right now, but need the storage pretty bad.

$5 for everything.
Craftsman heritage box with removable tray. 54688560-53BC-4810-B1F3-313158130775.jpeg
That’s a you-**** deal. I like the chain links, but a leather replacement will not be hard to source, if you want.
Weird pliers with no mark other than a diamond on one handle. 88EE2917-550F-4795-A54F-94AC976C7CFE.jpeg
Those are typical combination pliers. (Some models more closely resemble regular slip-joints.) With no manufacturer stamp, might be difficult to ID. The bare diamond may indicate production for general hardware stores. The Button’s pattern wire cutter in the throat (instead of between the handles or on one side) and the hex nut (instead of round with two flats) might help narrow the possibilities.

Thanks for the pics and Link, Alinc! - I believe you are right. looks to be the 5/2 National Star. The Handle brackets look the same too.

The rails are nailed in? - I assume you have one? I'll try to get some pics of the drawer joinery. Main hasp has been changed, I can see the wider hole pattern, and the side hasps are MIA as well. if you have one, some close pics of the originals would be helpful!

I found 4 of 6 needed corner brackets so far. Does the front bottom comers have a strap similar to the ones on the top of the main box in front?

How wide/thick are the rails on the front panel? That should be an easy one to dupe. I may even have aged material.

The Star that I have is sitting on my larger toolbox at a shop I don't current work at. I'll try and make a call and get some dimensions/pics . Or possibly even stop by there. At some point that box is gonna have to come home, but I've been avoiding it as I have zero space right now.

If the earth seemed to tilt slightly to the northeast on its axis today, it may have been because it was Garage Sale Thread Emeritus Host Reunion Day at Collingwood Flea Market, where the esteemed Beemer (@bmwrd0) joined me for some early morning picking on his way to Brooklyn. I was a little worried when I read the weather report last night (38*F, windy, and overcast), and even more worried when I pulled in to the PL at dawn and saw that it was pretty dead with maybe only twenty or so vendors and only a few of the house liquidators. But Collingwood never fails, we had a fun time pawing through various bins and boxes, and I was happy he found a few things he liked. (I won't spoil his fun or report, which might be delayed due to a laptop failure, his visit in NYC, and his return cross-country road trip.) I can happily confirm what others already know, which is that he is just as eagle-eyed, just as shrewd, and twice as friendly as his online persona. (I must say that the effusively "colorful" language he must work extra hard to keep in check here was unexpected!)

Here are my take-homes (Lugz 2022_19A)

2022_19A.jpg

That safety handle hacksaw frame is an L.S. Starrett. (I have a few others just like it with other brands.)
The canteen is a PALCO.
The ornate shears were made in Germany.
That homemade speed wrench has an SK 1/4-inch drive 3/8" 12-point socket attached.
The 1/4-inch drive ratchet is a Walden 3150.
Singer sewing needles case.
Unopened, never-been-used Aviator pinochle deck with intact 1940-1964 IRS stamp.
The ditty bag is, quite literally, a stenciled "DITTY BAG".

Saw a small ad on Craigslist for a sale. Saw the word "TOOLS" and hopped in the car. Ended up with a nice haul. A Monarch 219 vise, a Littlestown No. 25 vise, dolly on casters, wood plane (don't see any markings), NYS license plate, and a few hand tools-JH Williams 1/4" ratchet, SK Wayne 3/8" ratchet, Husky and CMAN extensions, Crescent adjustable, Williams T-Handle, SuperRench DBE's, and a Bondhus ball end hex driver. I know the Littlestown is a common vise and the jaws are missing but it was $10 and it lead me to the Monarch vise ($20) which I don't know much about but the 70ish year old man said it was his grandfather's and had been bolted to the bench forever. I had to break the bench to get it off. He also had a HUGE 6" give or take 1/2" Chas. Parker that he wouldn't budge with. Asking about that one lead to the Monarch. The Monarch is crusty but is smooth as hell and should clean up nicely. Anyone with info on it please let me know. All said and done I got it all for $50.

Does anyone know what this kitchen tool is used for (looks like a press of some sort) ?

Nice NB box Gidge! It‘s a good day for NB here at GJ. Went to the car swap this morning and the first vendor I stopped at pointed me to an old carry box behind his tables. Didn’t have much in it but I was delighted to find a nice None Better 1/4“ ratchet, then hid my excitement when I noticed the 1/4-3/8 drive plug inches away!31DF13AA-8284-4864-B78E-5D5B9385ED6D.jpeg

That is a transitional plane, much despised in some circles. They make a nice user if the mouth is decent. Usually their sole is very worn, which is fixable. Usually marked on the wooden toe. Makers are usually Stanley, Sargent, Birmingham, Union, and a few others.

Here is how I fixed a few with gaping mouths, slapped a piece of ipe under it.

@NYBODYMAN You definitely **** for the vises!

Mike
$20 for that Monarch has to be the take of the weekend! There’s no way not to make money on that.

Went to the first sale I'd been to in many moons ... what I actually wanted was already gone, but I picked up a nice little 4" vise and a couple of nearly-full cans of spray paint for $13. Anyone know whether the "ACE" is private-labeled for Ace Hardware? or..? There's also an M stamped into it in two places. The diamond shaped bosses on the dynamic jaw look familiar but I can't place it.
