I definitely went through a period where I bought everything. Now I try to complete vintage sets, either because I found an original box for them or I find enough at one time I am willing to find a box. But, this is my hobby (or at least one of them) so as long as I stay within budget I am happy. I will buy stuff that is pretty easily flippable when I run across it though, no matter my personal interest.

I’m still using yard sale tools I picked up 20 some odd years ago. It’s been pretty fun getting back into hitting them again to see what pops up. I’ve got several sets I’m trying to complete, but end up mostly starting new sets to start working on now. The funnest though has been finding these antique pieces. Been thinking about picking up a nice Kennedy type top box to fill with the best pieces. The rest, if it doesn’t fill a need at work, the service truck, the trail rig or the house, will either be resold, donated, or scrapped.

Just a thought that has been going through my mind as I read these posts every week (my favorite thread by the way)....I see a lot of guys buy random sockets, wrenches, etc. What exactly does everyone do with them? Make sets, make mismatched sets, trade, sell/flip? I used to buy anything USA made but have cut back because I found that the resell market is soft (for me at least) for anything other than MAC, Snappy, or Matco in my area. Other stuff will sell but not too well. Now I just look for the unusual or something I need/want or something that is too good to pass on and I can flip quick for my car/tool fund. So what's everyone doing with these treasures?
Switched fields from guitar repair to automotive a couple years ago and I've been using garage sales to "try before you buy" on different brands as I build up my box. Always worked on my cars before this but was blissfully unaware that better mechanic's tools than Craftsman existed.

This toolbox is for sale by an acquaintance after her husband's death. I have never seen this brand before and have no clue as to its value. The tools are not included. Does anyone here have any idea of what a box like this might be worth? The new ones I have found online seem to be rather expensive (in the Snap-on range). I asked her for a price and she feels it should be worth $3000 .
Anyone have any opinions? The stack is over 60" high.

I am unfamiliar with that brand. The tools that I can see appear to be low end import. I would say that it is not worth her asking price unfortunately. I understand you are in a sticky situation being that you want to help her and don’t want to low ball her. Maybe just offer to organize the tool box and sell them for her. Without seeing all the drawers I would not offer more than $300. What brands are present?

The stack in my garage is taller than me, SO,Mac and Craftsman, if some one offered 3K it would be gone, that's a big nope from me.
$300 would be top end.

People have very high estimations of what they have is worth. And I understand not wanting to get into the middle of a bad situation.

What I would do is (and this is me speaking for myself) offer to help list it online, Craigslist or Marketplace, and put it up at her price. If it sells, good job. If it sits there, well, that speaks volumes also. If the price is way off, I don't think you will get too many lowballers, but you never know.

Found a few things this evening. Not entirely sure what one does with a NOS Herbrand socket set but I reckon I will figure it out. If someone needs it, let me know. The SK set is a partial, also picked up some other misc items - hammers, sockets, clamps, etc

Freebie on the curb, found onthe dog walk and went back and picked up with the truck.
Got it running for a few seconds in the short time I spent.
might flip but I hate cutting grass.

Apparently they are pretty rare, or they moved into higher priced boxes shortly after completing these two sets ;)

I saw a free tractor come up locally, I can't get to it right now due to my trailer being fully loaded at the moment.

RE: Electrolux drop light, you know that was the optional cord reel for a model *** don’t you? To my knowledge they were never sold as drop lights. I have been looking for one to make a light myself….Very Cool!
So, after looking at this again, there is a male plug on the retractable end. If it was a drop light or extension reel of some kind, it would have a female plug on that end.
So, a cord reel you say? For what exactly? :dunno:
EDIT: ah, got it now. The *** model Electrolux vacuum.
looks like there’s a ‘cordwinder’ on the back of this one.

I don’t know diddly about vintage vacuums. I just grabbed it because it was cool (and cheap).

Like I said, that was an option, they didn’t all have it. The chrome reel was later offered painted to match the machine, presumably to make it cheaper. I know I could get one on the bay, but I prefer to wait for one to show up.. Making a drop light out of it would be pretty easy. If that reel is made like the rest of their products of that era it will likely still work for decades.😉

I seem to remember my mom having a roll around canister vacuum similar to this with the cord winder. My parents were/are pretty cheap and my mom would always buy canister vacuums at garage sales in the 90’s and guess who always had to use them for family chores? I hated those things then because they were horrible to roll around and would constantly fall over but now as an adult they actually look kinda cool!

Wow, that’s a blast from my past. My parents had the same vacuum when I was growing up.
Thanks for bring up memories of me dragging that tank around.

Found a very Cool JC Penny polished combination wrench set!
Mild use if at all.
Some wrenches look unused.

My friend and neighbor Steve has been dragging me to the Flea Market lately.
The last time it was for extension cords, this time for drill bits.

He got himself some nice new USA made bits and I found an almost complete set of JC Penny combo wrenches.
3/8 to 1-1/4 with 5/8 missing along with the 3/4 and 1-1/16 AWOL.

I asked the Seller what happened to the 5/8 and 3/4?
He just shrugged.
Can't remember.
Although he did say that he never had the 1-1/16

If anyone has the 5/8 (3454) and/or 3/4 (3456) that I need to complete this set, Please let me know
Let's make a deal!
Even the 1-1/16 (3463) if someone has one

jcp1.jpgjcp2.jpg
Awesome! I have a JcPenney 3/8 ratchet I picked up over 10 years ago. I also snagged an almost complete 3/8 metric socket set in a metal case years later...

Thanks everyone for the help on the Champion toolbox value. I think her late husband bought it new and she thinks it should be worth a large percentage of the original price because it's in good shape. I really am not interested in it because I just don't have the room and unfortunately, the tools are mostly ****. There is a guy who buys garage cleanouts coming to see her today and hopefully she will listen and let the stuff go. I didn't mention it but she has to have every thing gone by May 10 due to selling the house.
Thanks again for your help.

Hopefully both parties can come to a good agreement! Sometimes the best way to help is to stay out of it and let someone else be the bad guy 😂👍

Gotta love it when there’s both a “must be gone by” requirement and a “no lowballers” demand. In other words, “pay me top dollar as fast as you can”. The notion that you’re not going to get both is over some peoples heads.

They usually get neither. And, often have anger management issues when you try to inject logic and market pricing into the equation. Heaven forbid, pointing out all the flaws on their item making it not "new" anymore...

don't forget the oft-stated "i know what it's worth" claim.
unless it's something really necessary (read - nothing) i don't even bother to bite on those ads.
am often entertained by how often such ads are updated with new dates - or even better - when item goes unsold and ad remains active far after the original deadline has passed.

family friend was the local electrolux dealer. remember "riding" one of these (early '50s model LX) through the house in younger days. folks finally traded it out for a model 1205 in early 70s.

I have been pretty busy lately, and haven't had time to look for tools or to report when I find any. I'll try to get caught up, but it will take couple of posts.

We took a couple of trips and stopped in a few stores in Northwest Washington also Northeast Oregon. These stops resulted in a wide variety of items:
Walden Worcester 3318 1/2 dr. 9/16 12-pt. deep socket
Plomb WF-77 11/16 wobbly
three 1/2" NC taps
Vlchek 723 DOE 3/8 x 7/16
MAC DA-12 3/8 DOE obstruction
Westcraft H2052 DOE 1/2 x 9/16
Caterpillar Feeler Gauge (no part number, but appears to be a 1B9660)
Snap On XV1618 DBE 1/2 x 9/16
P&C 1208-BS combo 1/4 BS and 3/16 Whitworth
Ford DOE
Tools from Trips.jpg

An estate sale the other day resulted in this group for a total of $2.00.
Home-modified 14 gauge extension cord
S-K 40954 1/4 drive spinner
Ullman screw starter
Bondhaus 5/32, 9/64, and 7/64 ball end Allen drivers
Master Mechanic pocket screwdriver
13" tin snips
10-1/2 Greenlee wood bit
X-acto knife handle
General scribe (the point reverses to store inside the handle)
tweezers
Proto 41-1/4 center punch
Vermont American 6312 tap handle
Vlchek W2830 DOE 7/8 x 15/16
Hubbell 120V 20A plug
Estate.jpg
Monday I chanced across a few wrenches. The P&C combo was sitting in a pool of rainwater, so I had to rescue it! Again, $2.00 total.
Williams 966H Tool Post wrench 1/2" square
Williams Superrench 5/8 combo
Plomb USA 1135 DBE 11/16 x 3/4 (fills a hole in my set)
P&C "100" P2724 combo 3/4

I stopped by an out-of-the-way shop Monday, and found that they have increased the supply of used tools in their inventory. I spent $10.00, but found some interesting pieces:
Photo #1 -
Armstrong 52-214 14MM combo
Nissan (?) DOE 10MM x 12MM
Bonney 23610 10MM combo
Bonney 23817 17MM combo
Bonney ME DOE 14 x 15MM
Proto 9784 #2 Phillips wood handle screwdriver
Proto Professional (chevrons) 1214 combo 7/16
Plomb Pebble 3026 DOE 1/2 x 9/16
Barcalo DOE 1/2 x 9/16 (fills a hole in a set)
Barcalo DBE 9/16 x 5/8

Photo # 2 is a group of Crescent LC-series "Scoop" combination wrenches. LC-08 to LC-26 (1/4" to 13/16") missing the -16 and -24 sizes. I have others up to 1" (-32), including the -24 missing from this set, but I am also missing the 7/8" (-28), so I'm still looking for the -16 and -28 sizes. The three smallest wrenches have 6-point box ends, the rest are 12-point.

The story behind these tools had their own thread, but figured I would add them to this one so I can make them official garage sale scores.

I picked a former Snap on Dealers garage as he was in a retirement home after having mulitple strokes and his wife was selling their house. I don't know if I got a killer deal or not, but feel I did pretty good.

KB2100 and KB2001 toolboxes. They are in good shape, just need cleaned and put back together. After his stroke, he could not remember the combination to the lock, so they had to break into the box. I should have the parts to fix this.

And a variety of other tools. Not everything is pictured. The toolbox was full of stuff also, just not Snap on.

There are other tools that weren't worth much to me that didn't make the pictures. I will probably give them to my boys.

I paid a little more than I wanted, but I still think I did pretty well.

I hit two estate sales today, a bit farther than I would like to travel, but what are you gonna do?
52019507102_515a2a4c57_b.jpg
The reason I travelled as far as I did to the first sale was seeing this wonderful little steam engine, and I also picked up a Starrett parallel clamp and a nice copy of Boccaccio's The Decameron, a delightful tale of people hiding in a nunnery during the plague.

The second sale I only hit as it was close to the first

An Thorsen 1/4" speeder, which DOESN'T fit my Thorsen master 1/4 box (grrr...), an early Cornwell combo, and a Schwinn/Raleigh brake lever. Not sure which yet, but in any case I will end up needing it.

Great to see you here, (@Provincial) Jock!

Today's flea finds (Lugz 2022_25) include some good context reading for a novel I am writing that alternates between 1776 and 1976, and, at the very bottom of the pic, a cast iron multi-tool that was patented almost 100 years between those two years ("AUG. 24. 1875"). Funny how it goes at fleas sometimes. The seller has been unloading the contents of an old working garage for months now, most of it overpriced, and the first thing I go to buy from him, he says, "Just take it," derisively, with a sneer, because he thinks, not entirely inaccurately, that it's a junk drawer item. I insisted on giving him $1.
