This afternoon I went to the first flea market I have ever seen in my town. There wasn’t much in the form of tools, but I did manage to find a Duro 1/4 4533 extension for $1. On the way home I saw a sign for a vendor mall that I have probably driven past a hundred times but never noticed, so I decided to stop. Inside it was probably 95% Star Wars and Hot Wheels, which are both cool, but I was hunting for tools. Tucked back in the corner I found ten small boxes of tools. For $2 each I managed to find a Plomb 5464 extension, a penens 1/4 spinner, proto mfd pliers, a proto la keychain, a proto la 1214 combo, a proto professional refrigeration ratchet, a proto nut driver, p&c 2726 combo, two p&c round shank dbes, two p&c extensions, p&c dykes, and a 41-w-900 ignition wrench

Hit an estate sale Friday, 5 minutes before closing. Had to move fast and not spend much time evaluating what I found. Presale pics were not very informative. "The Guts to Try" is a 1990 book about the aborted rescue attempt at Desert 1, in Iran. Plvmb WF-37 1/2" dr. breaker, FairmounT 33C and a partial pre-war/wartime SK set, with a SnapOn M3 sliding T. The little wooden box is now holding my vintage X-Acto knives and some blades, but is slightly too small for the plastic blade holder I picked up loose somewhere along the way. And a couple of Plano small organizer boxes.

I saw a late Craigslist ad for a one day estate sale in Concord, CA so we checked it out. It turned out to be the same company I got a good quantity of tools from last Friday. There weren’t many tools at this one but I spotted an 8” Delta grinder to possibly replace my 6“ Delta that is starting to make bad noises occasionally. It was priced high but just like last week I made an offer that was less than half of asking and it was immediately accepted.
Here is what we brought home minus my wife’s Pyrex pie dish.F5E60C30-F04E-43D6-9B0C-7978884D0547.jpegBF43CDE4-4117-4A58-BC39-DBB773DC1881.jpeg
The pliers are 8” Diamond and the screwdriver is Bell System.3797080B-21E5-433B-9AD7-0B9AE95B2492.jpegFC27059D-AB98-4047-A346-64C75156C89B.jpeg
I just grabbed the Craftsman DOE because it was metric 5D7D0856-67F1-45C4-87C8-4383309D01F2.jpeg
Did a little cleanup on the lightly used grinder.

Dribs and Drab today, adn one thing went missing in the car? :dunno: A drift punch. I know it made it to the car I looked at it between stops...

This pic should have had the punch- OLD spool of copper wire, A spring clip I liked, Champion High pressure nozzle ( a dupe of sorts - the marking and basic stuff is the same, but the outlet hole is significantly smaller? Rougher finish as well), A shard of a thunder egg, and the cool old Camel patch kit - the back has a copyright date of '46! The bits came from the inside which still has the cement tube, and most of the patch material. (something else was in there at one time as it has a glop of red stuff - RTV?

I found a few good tools at a couple of sales today. The first stop was at an estate sale in Hillsborough. The prices were ridiculously high for all of the tools, with the exception of a Milwaukee hole saw for $2.50. Not bad.

The only other sale in the area that looked promising was a moving sale with plenty of tools. The owner was retired from the trades and was moving to be closer to his children. I picked up up a fairly nice draw knife that should clean up very well, a Craftsman 1/2" speeder, a nice woodworking chisel (use with a lathe?) and a rusty oiler which should also clean up nicely. All for $10.IMG_0803.jpg

Had pretty good luck today. Paid $20 for this practically new LS 2 helmet in my size.
20220430_132649.jpg
Reed Model 31 for $10. Missing swivel base unfortunately. No chips or cracks but handle is bent. And paid $8 for the telescoping bore gauges.

20220430_132936.jpg

I then went back to the former Snap on dealer to find the missing parts from my toolbox purchase last week and loaded up on the following. Paid $100 for everything else.

NOS Snap on E torx set

Cornwell charger to keep in the barn.
two sets of Snap on AC gauges. Not sure if they work, but i now have a kit to repair them.20220430_192736.jpg

*Not sure why all the previous pictures got mixed up*

The former Snap on salesman was also a former SWAT officer and this was some of his gear. Found these in a box in the cor er of the garage. Two .38spl. Speed loaders with old ammo still in them, pepper spray and a couple holsters.

We decided to try two sales that mentioned tools that were pretty close to home. The first one was a bust but the second one had some really rusty tools for very little money. The 1/2” drive speeder is Blackhawk, one doe is Williams (I think) and the other Fairmount. The rusty adjustable is still a mystery. The little lineman’s pliers are Pexto. The evaporust will be working overtime tonight.

Not much picking going on this weekend, did get out one day for a bit but burned a lot of gas without much to show for it. I did still have some stuff sitting around from last weekend that I hadn't sorted and photographed yet so I'll include that stuff as well.

From last weekend, first sale was a continuation and I'd already been there twice. Fortunately the sellers had finally realized that their ridiculous pricing was going to leave them with a lot more junk than they wanted to deal with, and they were much more willing to bargain this time. Here's what I got for $20, if I would have paid asking it would have been nearly $100...

Up top is an old Duro 672, beneath that are a bunch of Starrett calipers, a Proto 1/2" ratchet adaptor, some Proto and P&C wobblers, and a few Snap on drag link sockets, one of which has been ground down but I still couldn't leave it there.

IMG_3990.jpg

Next sale was a guy cleaning out his garage, his sons were there and thought pretty highly of the stuff. I haggled a bit and got this bunch for another $20. SK adjustables, SK Wayne 1/2" rat, New Britain 1/2" rat, Proto LA offset DBE, Handy Hex DBE, Craftsman 1/4" extension, Proto impact socket, a couple Snap on impact sockets, and a few random SK sockets.

IMG_3989.jpg

Next sale was another one I had been at earlier in the weekend and I went back looking for some pieces that I had needed for sets I had bought earlier. I really need to get more disciplined about doing this the first time around, this time I came up empty on the pieces I needed but got the following for $22:

The bp hammer is Vaughan and Bushnell, the box I just kinda liked, and the snaps are all USA made and I'm sure I'll find a use for them. Then there are some Craftsman ratcheting wrenches, a Long C DBE, Long C DOE, a couple Superrench DBEs, two "Chrome Alloy" DBEs, a pretty old looking Snap on ignition? wrench, Blue Points Chicago DOE, Bluepoint XS-2024, "Chromium Vanadium" DBE, and some Bog hex drive sockets. Oh yeah, a couple Mossberg looking bits also.

IMG_3992.jpg

Ok, now back to this weekend. First sale didn't have much that caught my eye other than this stuff for around 12 bucks if I remember correctly. A Williams B-58A torque wrench, Craftsman reamer, and a few little Proto bits in a kind of Proto looking box. A couple interesting things about these (in my mind at least) are the chromed piece on the cad t handle, and the Skyway ratchet. There's been some speculation on this board about whether Skyway was part of the Plombpire but the couple different threads where it was brought up never really went anywhere. Maybe we'll never know...

IMG_3991.jpg

After the previous sale I wasted a bunch of gas driving to a couple sales quite a ways away since there weren't many interesting sales in the immediate area. The first stop had a treasure trove of vintage knives but the guy wanted way more for them than I was willing to pay so it was a bust. Another stop had a really nice old Snap on box but the guy had it stuffed full of hydraulic/pneumatic fittings and wanted $150 for the lot. He refused to separate out the box and I wasn't willing to drop that much on it. Finally I stopped at one last sale before I had to go grab my kids and found a few Powercraft metric wrenches along with a Snap on and Proto LA socket for 2 bucks.

Again not something from an actual yard sale, but from my moms old house, where she has no place for this in her new apartment in assisted living.

I love this painting; it was in her sunken living room above a 9 ft couch for the past 54 odd years. My dad got it from his work (moving and storage and a very early "abandoned storage sale") and they had it cut down a bit due to some damage, and re-framed. Unfortunately the artists name and possible date went away during the process (why not at least tack it on the back of the frame? :dunno: ) In any case I took it, and I just took down two shelves to move them on an opposite wall, and hung it over my 1880's roll top desk.

Sorry for the glare -- there is a fisherman's cottage (about where the glare is), and they are either drying or mending nets - off in the distance are 2 sailing boats on the water

I hit up a community wide in the little town of Rosharon Texas. I got this argon bottle for a dollar! Couldn’t believe that deal. The guy said it came with his MIG welder and he only uses flux core, so to him it was yard art. Then I bought this Metabo 7 inch grinder. It’s a beast! Paid $40. Sitting right
next to it was a Dewalt 4 1/2 inch and they wanted $60! I guess they don’t know the difference in quality between the two.

Almost a bust this weekend. Saturday I tried for a 3/4" thick glass dining table, but it went in the first 30 seconds. I wouldn't have paid full price anyway. Consoled myself with an unopened gallon of Evaporust for $6, passed on the unopened quart for $4!! WTF??

Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
On Thurs, I hit two estate sales, two thrift stores, and two Restores. Half of them were busts, half good.
52036880432_b9a20b5e13_b.jpg
The ES was family run, and they didn't know anything about tools. So, there were baggies of mixed sockets, everything was individually prices, some high, some low. Anyway, Challenger ratchet, Craftsman flex, Snap-on T-bar, Proto flextention. A bag of minature wrenches yielded some goodies: Plomb, Thorsen, Craftsman, Herbrand, Walden. And a bag of acid brushes. All of that for $11.

52036859987_f2a959efbf_b.jpg
The Restore turned up this interesting little saw and the stock refinishing kit for $7

The real find of the day was from a thrift store,
52041249392_480eb2e001_b.jpg
half of a set of exact reproductions from the '40s of Burtons translation of the Arabian Nights.

On Friday I had some appointments, so I wasn't able to do any real hunting, but I did manage to find the following:
52040025142_c7e2c07a2e_b.jpg
Alligator wrench, interesting old glasses case, Cornwell flex, P&C flex, unmarked (SK?) breaker bar, and a vintage flaring set in the box. $4 for all of that.

Saturday, I did something I generally try not to do; I went chasing the missing Arabian Nights volumes. No luck in that, sadly, but I found a few things in thrift stores, Restores and at a used tool dealer I like.
52041471289_96b4f7cf8f_b.jpg
a Wright era Speedmaster ratchet in primo condition, a very beat up Wright era Speedmaster socket box, Williams and Plombpire sockets, and a Stanley #36 sweethart level that is slightly dirty but all bubbles are intact and original!
Also, picked up this
52040026802_8182d2e3ef_b.jpg
A '29 reprint of Dashial Hammett's (Maltese Falcon) second book. VERY happy with that!

I recently bid and won this lot of 2 Justrite oily waste cans. They are the large 21 gallon size.
There was an auction at SOG knives, I guess they closed the facility nearby where they make the knives. Paid $29 for both.

OUTLAW, I like that painting! Oil on canvas? Subject and style-wise, I’d say it’s earlier than your 1880s desk. German or American Romanticism / Hudson River School / probably early 1800s.

Well, (to me) that’s what it looks like in the photo. Maybe mid1800s? Later in the 1800s, there would be a shift toward Luminism, then Impressionism. The style could be immitated by an artist of any later time, but I’d not think they’d put so much effort on the detail.

EDIT - looking harder, maybe there is a little Luminism, but that usually goes with flatter landscapes. The trees and mountain silhouettes are more stylized than a first impression gave me, which may suggest later, even Asian export. But my gut says first half of nineteenth century.

LS, I did a little reading up on that movement, and I'd agree. With the 1848 death of Thomas Cole coinciding with new fads for art collecting in the United States and the limited resurgences in latter decades sort of small - certainly the original/modified canvas frame looks old enough! Who knew? :dunno:

Too bad most of the major art museums for this style are in the New England area.

My son and I were coming back from the store and noticed a building we have driven past hundreds of times was having a sale of some sort. We stopped and apparently it's a antique/junk shop. I walked in and it was loaded to the rafters. Tons of stuff everywhere and you basically just pick through and negotiate a price. An old lady walked in behind me and let me know that the owner was very good, there was a lot of good stuff, and he has great prices. Sounds good to me. I don't know how I missed this place all these years. I only had a few minutes so I have to go back again. Has a whole floor of tools!!!
I grabbed a Bell System First Aid kit for my dad (former telephone worker), a George Brett Wilson glove in great condition which I know I can easily flip, and a hand painted Body Shop sign that is allegedly local all for $35.

I feel that someone identified them at some point, but I don’t recall what they are. I’m pretty sure I had more, but can only find one other, now. Interestingbthat they are both “E” on one side, and have the same number on the other, except for the letter suffix.
Turns out the first character in those Eberhard numbers was different - Z & 2, not 2 & 2. Today’s finds included 7338A or is it 7388A? I have not found a pdf catalog yet, though there are several mentions of the company in industry periodicals. 094DDB40-529C-434D-8597-23E1004ED9AD.jpeg

^ If I had to make a call, I'd say you have pretty clearly stamped "Z" and "2" and "7" there (top to bottom.) No idea where the "Z" fits in:

Outlaw, that red goop is probably the remains of a red rubber patch. Around WWII this material was used to make inner tubes and patches. It didn't hold up well, and tended to melt and solidify into a pretty hard puddle of red plastic-like material. I once had a pair of antique airplane wheels with mounted tires that suffered this fate. I ended up selling them off to someone who was more optimistic that I about removing the red mess.

I notice that your bottle has "Airgas" stamped into it. Usually, this means that the bottle belongs to the supplier. Customer-owned bottles have no stampings in that area.

Most welding supplies will not refill a supplier-owned bottle unless you have an account that shows you are renting it. If you already are renting an Airgas bottle that is the same size, you can now have a spare to swap, but they will have to think that you are trading in the rental bottle.

This is probably why it was so cheap.

Mystery item looks like some sort of manual impact remover for stuck fasteners or studs?

I remember those. You are probably right. I think maybe the current "rubber" Mfgs/Suppliers are taking lessons from the past...

I usually swap out the bottle rather than get it filled. If my normal gas supply place says no, I’m only out a buck.

Thanks for this heads up.
