Last week, I went to the ReStore and donated about 20 pounds of sockets (all Taiwan, SriLanka etc.) Nicely necklaced up on 12ga wire- makes me feel sooo green not to ashcan them. Then to the nearby recycling place to dump a big trashcan of circuit boards. This chip shortage must be for real- they brought about $2 a pound! I saw that they were paying 87 cents a pound for stainless, and that made me think of the ReStore - they were giving away stainless sinks for $1 each. Four of them and they weigh about 5 lbs. each. My mercenary soul started counting the sheckles, but in the end I decided that would defeat the purpose of ReStore, so left them to be hopefully re used in a house.

I know there’s a separate thread for tools found in the road, but today was an unprecedented day for me, it looks more like a sale haul.

Saw the large Channellock early in the morning, half near one side of a busy road and half near the other side. Figured it was a goner considering it had been run over. Was able to collect its remains on my sixth passing, after work, in my own vehicle.

The Pittsburgh deep socket above it was at a nice controlled intersection i stopped at.

The yellow Stanley pliers and Proto extension top right, were on the shoulder of a very busy street, about 30 feet apart. I went back for them after work. Surprised they were still there considering all the foot and bike traffic!

The whole other mess, I turned on a very busy street and thought I caught a glimpse of a ratchet shining on the other side of the median in a turning lane. I turned around and went in that turning lane. Luckily it was just a lane to turn on a neighborhood street. I spotted the 1/2” ratchet and then realized there was a 3/8”, plus sockets everywhere, tools in the median and around the other side. “Is that a 1/4” ratchet too?”. :ROFLMAO:

I found myself with an armful of tools and heaved it all up in the truck. It was a bit hard to gather because the lane was a mess. Some was in dirt under the bushes, and among numerous bits of crash and shredded tire debris. After work I went back and found seven more pieces under the median shrubbery. I was literally lifting the bottum of the shrub and pulling out the extensions.I know there’s more in that loose soil. Save some for the landscapers!

Yesterday I picked up a K Line tin for $1 that was full of mostly cheapo Japan stuff but had 2 Snap on and an SK sockets (kept those). With the exception of the ratchet and flex driver I took the rest to work. I have a free bin there the guys can take whatever they want from it. They’re always losing stuff or leaving stuff at customers homes.

I also grabbed a handful of screwdrivers for $1. Snap on, Proto driver, Bonney, XCelite pocket, and a Jensen mini.

Grabbed this 3 1/2” Craftsman vise at my last stop for a $20 bill.

Nice vise - MOAO had one of these -same size and all- when we met. It was one of the things that attracted me to her. Half a century later, she still has both!

I stopped by the local steam and gas tractor show A couple weekends ago and made my way through the flea market section before grabbing some to-go breakfast.
Unfortunately a lot of the vendors hadn’t opened yet but I still managed to pickup a few things.

Dewalt drywall screw gun, some oddball utica pliers, 3/8” sk extension, and a greenfield tap handle. $8 total.

I recently picked up another lot of tools but some of that is still in the evaporust and will get its own post.

I haven’t been able to make it out as much as I would like (working the mid shift makes extracurriculars a bit challenging at times) and so I am living vicariously through you all!

Catching up, however, 2 recent hauls netted the following:

Snap On 1658 Pinch Bar
Snap On 1/2 x 3/8 deep socket
Proto 5280 3/8 Speeder MFD
Proto 5216M 16mm x 3/8 Pro
Proto 4714 7/16 x 1/4 LA
Proto 4714-L 7/16 xl 1/4 Deep LA
Proto 7183 1/2 x 10in extension Pro
Proto 5418-H 9/16 x 1/2 Hex Pro
Proto 5226-H 13/16 x 3/8 Hex Pro
Plvmb NAF-1110-12 7/8 x 1/2 Deep
Plvmb 5022 SP 11/16 x 3/8 Deep
Plvmb 5344 11/16 x 1/2 Deep Grind-off
Plvmb 5426 13/16 x 1/2 (AC) (Chrome)
Plvmb 5420 5/8 x 1/2 (FB) (Chrome)
Plvmb 5420 5/8 x 1/2 Grind-off
Plvmb 5418 9/16 x 1/2 Grind-off/shortened

Of particular interest was the Plvmb NAF 1110; my first…

Lastly, I’ve been keeping my eyes open for a magnifying lamp to assist my fly-tying, soldering, and various others tasks requiring a bit more focus than what my beat-up peepers can provide unassisted. While killing some time last week, I poked my head in the door of a junk shop and, 2 ft from the front door, found a Dazor 8MC-300 on a Dazor floor stand which I was able to acquire for the princely sum of $13.

Nice pick on the lamp! I've accumulated several magnifying lamps for the same reason. I carry a pocket magnifier when picking, and it really helps when markings are faint or small.

Found an ad for a craftsman toolbox with tools in it a couple weeks ago. However, the box and tools had lots of rust as it had been left in a storage unit that was leaking. I grabbed what I thought could be saved and things I needed.
After lots of evaporust most of it cleaned up well but some has some deep pitting unfortunately, especially a few of the metric wrenches and the bases of the 3/4” sockets.
Nothing too special but lots of usable stuff for my tool boxes.
Spent $140 total.
In no particular order:
Snap on 1/4” ratchet and 1/4” extension set (my first snap on ratchet)
Snap on adapter set and ratchet attachment
Challenger Proto metric and sae wrench sets missing a few that I’ll have to find now.
Craftsman metric and sae wrench sets
A few craftsman ratchets, 3/8”,1/2”,3/4”
3/4” craftsman sockets
1/4” deep craftsman sockets sae and metric (not pictured)
3/8” deep craftsman sockets sae and metric
1/2” deep craftsman sockets sae and metric
2 snap on 3/8” speeders

Wow, they sure cleaned up well! Great find!

3Bay: that's quite a pile of roadkill! I've never seen a broken pair of Channellocks like that!

chenry318, the more I look at your post and your pictures, I'm gonna' say You ****. The Snap on items alone would be a "good deal", but throw in the 3/4" drive set and you are in the "great deal" category. Adding in everything over and above that and yeah, you ****.

If I came across a pile like that for $140, I wouldn't be able to get my money out fast enough.

Nice score. The cleanup is half the fun.

Right place. Right time. Here are some photos of a recent find of Plomb tools and toolbox. I haven’t even had time to clean/inspect them yet, but I have to say, I am pretty excited. I will post more specifics in the Plomb thread soon.

I don't know how well I did with the made in Taiwan Belt Sander I bought for $35 today at an Estate Sale. The rest I paid $5 which included Palmer Pliers. No brand names on the other tools.

^ You're making me scratch my head now. There were variances among different models and makers in respect to how the replaceable jaws were designed, inserted, and attached to the handles.
You're going to want to search through "Todd's Patent" and "Carew" - it gets really muddled in places.
Run a search on "Meridan" and "Hotchkiss" as well.

These are too rusty to tell right now. Double screws, but I don't think double cutting edges. They say Todd's patent, and don't have the big mouth of the later patent.

I was just at AA, and they had one with an E in a hex....

These screw in from the top.

Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
On Thurs, I hit two estate sales, two thrift stores, and two Restores. Half of them were busts, half good.
52036880432_b9a20b5e13_b.jpg
The ES was family run, and they didn't know anything about tools. So, there were baggies of mixed sockets, everything was individually prices, some high, some low. Anyway, Challenger ratchet, Craftsman flex, Snap-on T-bar, Proto flextention. A bag of minature wrenches yielded some goodies: Plomb, Thorsen, Craftsman, Herbrand, Walden. And a bag of acid brushes. All of that for $11.

52036859987_f2a959efbf_b.jpg
The Restore turned up this interesting little saw and the stock refinishing kit for $7

The real find of the day was from a thrift store,
52041249392_480eb2e001_b.jpg
half of a set of exact reproductions from the '40s of Burtons translation of the Arabian Nights.

On Friday I had some appointments, so I wasn't able to do any real hunting, but I did manage to find the following:
52040025142_c7e2c07a2e_b.jpg
Alligator wrench, interesting old glasses case, Cornwell flex, P&C flex, unmarked (SK?) breaker bar, and a vintage flaring set in the box. $4 for all of that.

Saturday, I did something I generally try not to do; I went chasing the missing Arabian Nights volumes. No luck in that, sadly, but I found a few things in thrift stores, Restores and at a used tool dealer I like.
52041471289_96b4f7cf8f_b.jpg
a Wright era Speedmaster ratchet in primo condition, a very beat up Wright era Speedmaster socket box, Williams and Plombpire sockets, and a Stanley #36 sweethart level that is slightly dirty but all bubbles are intact and original!
Also, picked up this
52040026802_8182d2e3ef_b.jpg
A '29 reprint of Dashial Hammett's (Maltese Falcon) second book. VERY happy with that!
I've switched to a kindle now but I would've hopped on the Arabian Nights. As a kid I read Burtons translation from a paperback that was as thick as a Tom Clancy and Steven King lovechild.

You **** Fred! What is the story on that haul?
That Plomb haul gets a you ****!..........well done(y)
Thanks guys. I just kept looking. The boxes that are easy to get to have almost always been picked over. I was pulling out old boxes and finding nothing. I was balancing precariously, like Mike Wolfe on "American Pickers", thinking that I was going to fall, and I finally pulled out a box that contained the wrenches. The toolbox was found separately and was a surprise to the owner, as well as to me.

Thanks! This cleanup was definitely a challenge.
Now I just need to find the missing wrenches….

There was only one listing for an estate sale today but it did mention tools. When we arrived there was a fairly large roller with tools in it they wanted to sell as a package. I asked to look through it and only found a few things that I wanted and the guy overseeing the garage didn’t seem to mind as long as most of the tools remained in the box. Apparently the previous owner worked for Chevron. My wife found his flashlight in the house.

Picked this box up yesterday at a local auction.
Seems to be a wartime parts box for ATA/ARA Navy radio for planes.
It is in amazing condition except for some paint spatters I am going to attempt to clean up gently.

A few days worth of finds:
52055338364_2069a57176_b.jpg
I swung by the Restore the other day, and it was full up on tools! Most of which I don't need, but I did pick out these: SK Wayne metric socket box, Millers Falls plane (later one, and I might should have passed on it) and a heavy duty flathead.

On Thursday I hit the few sales that were going on that day
52055590185_843f86e421_b.jpg
Vintage sharpening stone (with very nice cardboard slip), Hartford socket chisel, Plomb war finish breaker bar, and a mini driver - possibly from a Stanley 45. From another sale, a USS pattern T&D. That wasn't cheap, but I am a sucker for things like that.

Today, I hit two sales that I am planning to go back to tomorrow.
52055605925_beef19688b_b.jpg
The first sale I spent a bit of money, but I will make it back with that SK long handle. Other things include a plane tote, Cornwell combo, PEXTO chisel, Snap-on t-handle, Blackhawk speed handle, chisel handles (Buck Bros. and Craftsman) Stanley chisels (Everlast and 750), along with a rebranded Triplett 310. I can never pass those up, seemingly.

Last sale was a company I don't really like, but they often have incredible deals on tools. In other words, they don't know what they got!
52055371864_4cf960dd1c_b.jpg
an old book on armatures, misc. vintage sockets (Snap-on, P&C, Craftsman, Cornwell, etc.) a weird 1/2 to 3/8 adaptor, Delta scroll saw die files, New Britain and SK ratchets, and in the bottom right, Blackhawks sockets, about half of which are chiefs head!

I was able to go to a few sales this week. The weather has been rainy and I had caught up on work until it dries out. The first sale was Thursday, and it was a fundraiser for aiding Veterans. I was able to get a few things and help out a good cause. Photo #1:
Charity Sale.jpg
Mossberg 748 drain plug wrench
Barcalo DBE 11/16 x 3/4
Long-C 1031 DOE 25/32 x 7/8
Husky CS41 1/2 dr. ratchet
Thorsen 88JNR 3/8 dr. flex ratchet. Head is broken, but the guts are good. Donor for parts.
Thorsen "Vee" 1021 combo 21mm
Williams 703 engineers wrench 9/16
New Britain M104 brake adjusting spoon
Stamped ignition DOE 17/64 x 19/64 "E"
Mac hose pick
Drill bits (all USA) 1/2, 9/16, 11/16, two 3/4
$19.00 total.

Photo #2 are the finds at the Restore today:

Truth 1/2 dr. 12-pt. sockets in 7/16, 1/2, 5/8, 11/16, and 7/8
3.5mm T-handle allen wrench
$3.15 total.

Photo #3 is an estate sale from today, The photos and description sounded good, but there was not that much there, and prices were high on some interesting stuff. I did well on the tire iron at $3.00 ($80.00 new), and came out for $22.00 total.
Estate Sale.jpg
Ken-Tool 34747 (T46A) tire iron for big truck tires
Walden-Worcester 1020 TeeFlex 5/8
Snap-On XS-1012 DBE 5/16 x 3/8
Proto LA 96 7/16 punch
Thorsen 1012 combo 12mm
Barcalo "Scoop" TB1618 DBE 1/2 x 9/16
P&C 2118 short DBE 1/2 x 9/16
Ford "M" DOE 7/16 x 1/2
Champion Los Angeles hose nozzle. The second I've found lately. They work very well and I just used the first one with my fire pump to wash off a bulldozer with 150 PSI water.
Craftsman WF 1/8 screwdriver. I have many of these, and keep them handy. They are a very useful size, and quite tough.
New Britain NS60 1/2 dr. swivel
3/4 to 1/2 impact reducer

Last was a TOO garage sale on the way home. Didn't look promising at first, but the roll of wire is useful, the stainless pan has handles and will come in handy. The 22-inch Jointer plane has no identification at all, and is a little rusty. It may be a Craftsman or Fulton (pre-Craftsman), which only had decals, rather than cast-in or stamped markings. All the screws and adjuster turn freely, and the blade is surprisingly sharp. I bought this so my niece can plane off a plank table that has been beat up. It will get some use! Total spent was $17.00.

Pretty dead here unless I want to burn a lot of gas and time. One local with possibles, but only a book worth getting (a buck)

Northrup book 1.jpg

Don't let the "Aerospace" fool you - the first two editions were titled "Aircraft Maintenance & Repair" (I don't think "Aerospace" was a word in 1949....)
Northrup book 2.jpg

Contents makes it clear, we are not speaking of spacecraft:

Northrup book 3.jpg

A couple of days ago I received this off of Eprey - a Lyman Alaskan (2.5X scope) with a Litschert "Alaskan Targeteer" 6X "booster" on it - I didn't steal it, but I didn't pay a premium either. it came with Buehler rings adn a base (not sure what the base fits yet)

I still want to find a 2.5X Alaskan.

It's garage season here, so I figured I'd brave the storm and venture out.
I didn't have big expectations, so I was not disappointed to find only a few objects at the two places I drove to, both of which were within 10 minutes driving time.
The first place had this gigantic Proto Los Angeles 9710 screwdriver and tiny wood-handled screwdriver. I probably paid too much for the big one, but I had no change so the little one was a freebie.
The second house didn't have a lot of stuff, but I did find these rusty old Krauter "Victor" pliers in a corner of the garage. They didn't have any price tag on them, so the lady insisted that I take them for free.
I suppose I'll need to go pick up some of the magic "Evaporust" stuff.

If somebody's looking for that LA screwdriver let me know.

Went to a few sales this morning. I spent $4. Made in Switzerland Dumont 3C tweezers, Clauss scissors, and a Blue Point magnetic pick up tool.

I haven't had time to make it to many sales this weekend, only got to two and one of them looked abandoned so I didn't even go in. However, the one stop I did make yielded a pretty sweet non-tool find, I figured I'd post it here because I know there are some bike guys in here. I initially went by the sale for the tools, but I saw this sitting in the corner with a $150 price tag on it. After a brief negotiation I took it home for $100:

It's a brand new Surly Ogre frame, it also came with the fork. The huge contraption on the rear wheel is a Crystalyte Phoenix II rear hub motor to convert the bike to electric drive.

In addition to the frame/fork/wheel combo, I also got this crate of stuff which includes the controller and display for the hub motor. Only additional thing needed to make this thing fly is a battery (other than the front wheel, crankset, brakes, etc of course)! Turns out this hub motor although a bit dated is pretty well regarded and they still sell them for quite a bit of $.

Hit a hugely under advertised estate sale today, only a few pix, and none really showed the magnitude of tools available, just text saying lots. This was a hoarder's garage and shed. When I arrived at the opening time, there was already a couple of people quarrelling in the garage, profanity clearly heard from outside the front of the house. Entrance was through the side gate, into the backyard, where there was a shed, and two spreads of tools in the yard, plus the packed to the gills garage. Right next to the cashier was a pile of stuff, including a couple of OLD vises, the single attachment swivel type. Turns out that was someone's pile. Argh. A skinny walkway, past the Craftsman stack seen in the ad, piled with extra stuff, boxes and piles of stuff everywhere. The stuff in the yard was only slightly interesting, the shed had three people in it, so I tried to get into the garage. Guy I knew was coming out, probably one of the sources of profanity. Next guy was rolling out an anvil (~30#) on a small cart. Helped him out, then worked my way in. First cross "aisle" had a large vise sitting on the edge of the piles on either side. While protecting that, I managed to look into various boxes and piles and cupboards, looking for more. Off at the end of the pile was a greasy box with what looked like a plane peaking out. Grabbed two planes, and decided it was time to commit, so I relayed my heavy vise, and other goodies to a pile near the cashier. I had no idea what they were going to ask for any of this, and didn't dare ask. I went back in grabbed a lot more stuff, then went into the shed, found some exotic wood stuffed into the rafters, then circled the yard piles again. Grabbed more goodies, then went to check out.

Got a good price on the lot, much less than I expected to pay just for the vise. I loaded all my junk into the truck, and went back in for another pass through everything.

Was fun once the early birds all left, guys helping each other extract heavy as hell tool boxes from a cabinet, with 4' wide piles of ****, joking about how this was probably "the guy" to fix stuff in the hood. As we unearthed stuff, found a Clausing vertical mill, Craftsman DP and metal lathe, and a 14" vintage grinder. Lots of survey rods, guys carrying them that had no idea what they were, lotsa clocks and old radio equipment in various stages of disrepair. Heard someone fire up a circ saw to try to shorten some 2x10s, and when that failed, he tried a hacksaw, ignoring all the 30 handsaws laying about. By this point I was hot and sweaty, my glasses would no longer stay up, so I gave up. My second batch cost almost as much as the first, probably due to the nice Proto puller, with all 4 pairs of jaws.

The sellers goal was to empty the house, and get stuff to people who would use it. Two or three of the buyers seemed to be flippers, most others seem to know how to use what they were buying.

Anyways, here are some images of the haul, too much for clear pix in one pass. Many things will be posted in the appropriate sub threads. A few items may get flipped, or I may upgrade my stuff with this stuff.

PXL_20220507_190644625-X2.jpg

Part of the first pass L-R, bigger brace, 4.5C and 8C Stanley planes, Chas Parker 206-1/2 vise (128# of goodness), 3 skewed rabbet planes, matched T&G planes, 2x Stanley 67 spokeshaves, Thorsen box in nice shape, 2x auger depth stops, IOB, Starrett 99 12" Level, rough IOB, Starrett dial indicator in a different brand box, tapered pin reamers in a Snap-on socket box, Machinery handbook 13th edition from 1940's, and an Alford hand vise, no other accessories.

PXL_20220507_191514319-X2.jpg

5x Disston & Sons saws (1 panel, 1 thumbhole rip), and a Keen Kutter too.

PXL_20220507_191827488-X2.jpg

Exotic Wood, I think the two on the left are purple heart, the one in the center may be ebony, one looks like walnut, not idea on the other.

PXL_20220507_185646588-X2.jpg

The second pass through, L-R, Japanese sharpening stone, drills, sockets, rethreading dies, Jacobs chucks, sockets, parallel clamps, 6" pip wrench, Thor copper face hammer, 1.75#, small files, gouges, 2x auger bit sets in rolls, Proto puller with 4 jaws, Estwing hatchet and a bunch of NOS handles.

The wife is encouraging me to return tomorrow, see what else has been unearthed, but I'm running out of places to ditch stuff right now, need a major cleanup prior to bringing more in.

Went to a giant auction here today. A 60year starter and alternator rebuild shop. It was well over 100 degrees so lightly attended. Mostly scrappers. I bought several items from them after they bought entire lots.

My two favorite buys
