Been pretty slow around here unless you are looking for mostly HF or your typical Craftsman tools neither of which I'm typically looking for. Hopefully things will heat up with the better weather upon us. That being said, have been able scrounge up some stuff over say the last month but it hasn't come easy.

William's ratchets, S-52 & M-52, Blue Point wrench & Snap-On adjustable. The adjustable works fine but am surprised at the bright chrome finish over relative rough steel forging, at first glance when searching it looked like a cheap Chinese wrench to me.

Pretty complete sets regular and deep Vulcan 1/4" drive SAE sockets and a bunch of other Vulcan stuff. Took awhile to search multiple hand tool boxes to track down all the Vulcan stuff but in the end worked out well.

Tool-type things have been a little slow in the land of the buffalo. The hills and mountains are greening up, the streams are moving, and most normal folk in SW Montana are spending the majority of their free time drowning feathers and fur tied to small hooks, a pastime we refer to as “fly fishing” (for a full explanation of this phenomenon, refer to Saint Norman MacLean). Notwithstanding the temptations of the myriad trout streams and their piscine denizins, a slow troll through rustier environs netted…
Ah-ha, sheer poetry.
Not a coffee can man, I see.

I went to a car show and swap meet last week. I was looking for a big block chevy intake but came back empty handed. However, I did manage to find a 1965 chevy truck owners guide and protect-o-plate in the original sleeve (I have a ‘66 truck), some Atlas dynamite pliers, a little brass fire extinguisher, and a brass hammer. Today I stopped by my favorite used tool dealer and got a Craftsman long c two drawer chest with a bunch of old Boeing and aerospace machinist decals for $20

While I'm here, wanted to show this big screwdriver that followed me home.
It was on a $2.00 table & couldn't say no to that.
32" overall.
The handle reminds me of a electrical insulator.
I imagine that it will be hard to grip when wet or greasy with the smooth round handle.
I can find no maker identification.
Curious if anyone recognizes it.
Its amazing that it's straight and hasn't been beaten up with a hammer. That handle doesn't look like it offers much of a grip either. Very cool!

Hit some sales last weekend. One great sale, and one ok sale. The Ok sale was a mix of Snap On and Craftsman metric, about 2.50 per piece. The great sale was a Kennedy 2drawer mid, with all kinds of ramndom I threw in it, for $20.

Originally what drew me in was a 4-wheeler, but priced higher than I was interested. Then spitted this little guy and asked about it. Previous renters had abandoned it, and he just wanted it gone. Free! Had to stop back by later to load it up.

Will be starting a thread on me bringing it back to life. Sears Free Spirit moped, 1978. Has a Puch E50 engine, air-intake and carb jetted for 1.5hp. Looks pristine under the dirt and grime, should clean up nicely.

I remember I guy I went to high school with found a moped in a ditch when we were freshmen. After three months the police returned it too him as no one had claimed it, he titled it and rode it around for a while. Man, did I want one too! Such is being a kid.

Colorado will let you self title it, $5 for a 3-yr registration. I also have a Bridgestone 50cc two-stroke with a 4-speed transmission that is in the "to be fixed later" pile. That one is siezed somehow, so need to drop and crack the engine.to see what it needs.

Man, a free moped is a USUCK for sure. I've been watching for one that is not stupid $$, for a while now with no luck.

That or an electric bike. those are expensive also...

Forgot to mention, engine is free, and seems to have compression. No spark off the old plug so far. A few pinhole leaks in the top of the gas can seem to the worst of it, along with needing a new back tire. But will put all of that in the thread...

Local sales today are weak or non-existent, so I'll post up last week's scores, which were enough for AT LEAST 2 weeks!

The beginnings of a tool set for a friend's 18 y/o son.
Walden 3/8" dr. SAE
Proto combo set (missing 3...)
Proto ratchet
Mini-Mag (batteries still work!)
Stanley tape measure
Did some shopping through the dupes in my garage, will add C-man G-series metric sockets (not pictured) and some screwdrivers.

Lots of WW2 vintage tools, highlights:
Barcalo 25 DOE, 2ea.
Barcalo manifold wrench
Barcalo LDBEs, 2 different sizes
Bonalloy 3/8 x 7/16 SDBE
Duro E-series ignition wrench
Fairmount 27C
Plvmb 1222 combo
Mayhew punch
Walden DLBs (1130 and 1131)
S-K 1/4" 2" extension (thanks for the point-out, Don!)
S-K 1/4" set w/breaker, plus a Walden breaker and a D-I socket. Second S-K set in as many weeks.
TAFX2A marked armorer hammers, pair.
TL-29 knives, pair. ROUGH shape on both, and no scale markings.
Unmarked GI toolbox, covered in white paint. I've started removal, but this is going to be an ongoing project.

A bagful of Weaver scope mounts and a Williams receiver site.

3 pair 70s era camo pants, not pictured. Tried on the pair the same size as I wore in 1990 and was pleasantly surprised. And a PX-purchase ripstop OD laundry bag.

I grabbed a 1980's era NOS Craftsman wood hammer handle for 50 cents today. That's about it and not even worth showing a pic.

two little doo-dad cabinets with drawers. two Thorsen "V-groove" DOE wrenches (1108, 1110) eight 5/32" twist drills, and a toy cash register that actually works.
not shown: Mini "MagLite" that somebody hogged the end cap down on so hard I had to use pliers to get it off, only to discover the batteries had leaked all over the insides. It went straight into the garbage.

garage sales: 3
red lights run: 0
total spent: $5.30

I haven't had time to make it to many sales this weekend, only got to two and one of them looked abandoned so I didn't even go in. However, the one stop I did make yielded a pretty sweet non-tool find, I figured I'd post it here because I know there are some bike guys in here. I initially went by the sale for the tools, but I saw this sitting in the corner with a $150 price tag on it. After a brief negotiation I took it home for $100:

It's a brand new Surly Ogre frame, it also came with the fork. The huge contraption on the rear wheel is a Crystalyte Phoenix II rear hub motor to convert the bike to electric drive.
IMG_4001.jpg

In addition to the frame/fork/wheel combo, I also got this crate of stuff which includes the controller and display for the hub motor. Only additional thing needed to make this thing fly is a battery (other than the front wheel, crankset, brakes, etc of course)! Turns out this hub motor although a bit dated is pretty well regarded and they still sell them for quite a bit of $.

IMG_4002.jpg
As a bike guy, I want you to know that you absolutely ****. Nice haul. I have owned many Surlys, if that one fits you, it will last you forever.

^ If I had to make a call, I'd say you have pretty clearly stamped "Z" and "2" and "7" there (top to bottom.) No idea where the "Z" fits in:

I remembered I had a couple of the other wrenches in that advertisement. The carriage wrench has an unambiguous E-in-a-circle. The Arnholt, maybe.

I think I have a brace fitting like the one shown, too, but haven’t located it. I remember there were a couple wrenches like these in the sheds where I grew up, and I see them at the flea markets from time to time.

I have one like the "E" wrench, only it has a hex box end. there is a faint number in the shank groov, (pretty indecipherable) yours looks like it also has that LS?

Going to be late with any reports today, Planned a longer drive to get to an item at an estate sale my youngest is interested in.

Yes, I think something illegible is there, Outlaw. I hoped it would align with the model numbers in the advertisement, but I can’t say it does.

I'm hitting a wall on that second one. The "E in a circle" is definitely Eberhard.
The second one - as near as I can figure - is called a "Deering TYPE" wrench, but not necessarily manufactured by Deering Harvester Co., which merged in 1902 with McCormick and three other companies to form International Harvester Corporation. (The early genuine Deering wrenches have the Deering name on them.)
I'm not finding anything definitive on the Arnholt unit, which appears to be the same as the "Deering type". (Not sure if "Arnholt" was a tool manufacturer, an implement manufacturer, or a brand name. I did see one mention of it being a private-label brand, but there was no documentation for that claim.)

Here is my nice and small haul from today, from two stops. The C clamps are Brinks and Cotton, the cigar box is a Cohibo, and I have several in that flavor, hoping they are the same size. The SS hemostats and scissors came from a storage unit clean out of a skin care lady. And an LED clamp on light, just because.

I went outside my usual bounds and we got the small desk my daughter wanted. Then off to several other estate sales since we were out there anyway. Nice desk for her, especially at $30 - 44" wide, two cols of drawers, all dovetailed front and rear! Solid wood, nice secondary wood adn looks to be oak veneer under the flat black someone sprayed it with. that gets stripped. and refinished Pic from the ad:

I did well at the 3 estate and one sale a 4th was a bust, but I think I did OK for $39 total:

Metbo mini grinder, I need to open it as while it runs, they bypassed the switch? :wtf: , Road Flare storage canister, Berg Wood chisel, Hinsdale DBE, Bog ratchet wrench, Plvmb DOE and the other DOE between is not marked with a possible "G" at one end of the "rails".

ES1 Flare can Metbo grinder Berg Hinsd Bog 2 DOEs.jpg

ES2 had this SK 1/4" box full of Allens, 2 Craftsman, chisel adn pinch sets, Dunlap 8" pipe wrench, (measures 7" closed...) Barcalo Starter wrench, Schrade folder, (bread and muffin?) Boker Dykes adn Krauter NN.

ES2 SK box Dunlap PW Barcalo CM P & Ch Krauter Boker Schrade.jpg

Outlaw, that Bog ratcheting wrench is for adjusting Ford Model T brake and reverse bands. The thin edges of the hex are a tip-off. Should be marked T-306 and be 11/16" hex.

Nice haul! The desk has potential!

So it has been "curbside" shopping season around here as a local town has been doing bulk pickup for the last 2 weeks.

It has been a Rubbermade couple of days . . .

I first found the 1304 Utility cart on Thursday eve. The large wheels are "frozen" but it's otherwise in good shape. My plan is to get the wheels rolling and resell it.

I found the blue Brute rolling recycling bin first. It's in perfect shape . . . This is a twin to one I found last year.

I found the grey Brute rolling garbage bin next. The lid is missing but I have a spare in the shed from last year.

I found the green Brute barrel last - it's also in perfect shape. I can retire a 31 year old can that the bottom is worn thru from dragging it along the driveway.

Sorry for the pic - poor lighting.

Some nice scores guys. Great freebies too.

Yesterday I dropped in an antique shop on lunch. I fished out some old wrenches and an emblem.

Niagara, Mac line wrench, Jaguar.
Malibu emblem.
Four angle wrenches that were packaged together. Two Blue Points, a Duro Chrome, and a New Britain.

3bay - what is the opening size on that Niagara?

Outlaw - I've never heard of a "Rapid Fire". Does that hose connect directly to a standard isobutane canister?

Caught one sale today--got a late start so my expectations were not high. The listing looked good but not great and things were indeed picked over when I got there. No quantity but nice quality on the stuff I did buy. $4.00 for the breaker, $2.00 each for the others. Interesting that i don't see the VVK code in the Craftsman mfr. codes.

Friday I hit a couple garage sales that didn't pan out, and a couple estate sales that did.
52070895752_c7740db39c_b.jpg
First sale was was a very well organized garage and house being cleared out. In the ad I saw a lot of interesting stuff that I knew would attract a lot of guys (Stanley 10, Stanley 45 in parts, etc) and when I got there an hour after it started a lot was already gone. But I found more than a few pieces: Snap-on valve adjuster, diaper pin, Blue Point DBE, Vlchek bearing scraper, clothes pin, Herbrand flex speeder, Walden and Bonne T-handles, Goodel Pratt push drill, Plomb 1/4 speeder, ratcheting screwdriver, letter stencils, Plomb puller, Eagle oiler.
52072607517_d916c8b336_b.jpg
Drafting lamp I found in the back of a shed, and the sales girls had no idea if it works, so $5 (it does)
52071583547_854ef7ea05_b.jpg
and a couple books: Steel yard line catalog and Modern Gunsmithing (1933).

Second stop looked promising, but after wandering through the garage, shed, and house, it looked pretty bleak. But I took one last lap through the garage, and what do I spy on the shelf but some old books and pamphlets:
52072174784_1bd294c78d_b.jpg
52072746056_8415cd0783_b.jpg
a couple older welding text books, and a dozen railroad repair manuals from the late 30 to the end of the war. Great stuff! If you wanted to know how to repair tracks, inspect yard cars, load an open top, and run a steam engine, it is all here, with the war dept. manuals, also.
