I almost didn't get out to the flea this morning, with a glance out the window at some dreary weather that has since burned off, but my gleanings (Lugz 2022_29) made me glad I changed my mind!

20220527_085950.jpg

- I have not yet dated the contents of the Carter carb rebuild chest, but the Registered TM symbol under the logo is NET 1946.
- The filet knife sheath is just generic but in good shape.
- The ignition wrench is wartime Williams ALLOY, just because I never pass them up.
- I am hoping the Bonney obstruction wrench is not a dupe. I only have three and they are not at all easy to find.

I plan to have some classic GS thread fun with the OD green pouch. Stay tuned.
That Carter drawer set draws a real vacuum! Nice find

The od- is it a veterinary kit?

On Thursday there were a couple sales listed that caught my interest, but sadly they both turned out to be busts. Pro-tip, don't put pics of tool boxes in your ad and then decide not to sell them. Irritating, but so it goes. Anyway, I stopped at the Restore on the way back home, and picked up a couple things:
52101978538_1b8a970531_b.jpg
Williams spinner marked Special (I am guessing that due to the odd amber color and markings this was before they started making these a regular item) Dunlap #3, a pair of Lectrolite RP's, and a Western Giant (Herbrand).
Same type of story here, ad full of pics for Estate Sale, on the work side of town, so I go as there is a desirable Craftsman cabinet in the pics. Cabinet is in the garage with a sticker of $20.00 dead center. Tell the lady overseeing the garage "I'll take the cabinet, please empty the tools and I'll get a cordless screwgun out of my car to unhang the cabinet" Get the cabinet off the wall, discover it still has keys, bonus!! and guy come out of the house and says" I wasn't planning on selling that" So I asked" why is there was a $20 price tag on it ?" ..Oh "that's not from this sale,I'd have to have $35 for it" Since I already had the cabinet off the wall,I bit my tongue and gave up the $35. Start looking at the 3 box rollaway,"oh that is sold as 1 piece, full for $500,come back Sunday if you want individual tools" I was satisfied with the cabinet, won't be returning for Sunday. Just another poorly ran sale. Pics later.

Okay, dear quizzlings, put your thinking caps on, because it's Guessing Game Time!

This one is going to go in two (2) rounds - and I am really repressing the urge to leave some clues behind in my verbiage here.

If you get it in Round 1 you are Utterly Amazing.
Government Issued muffler bearing thread repair kit.

Government Issued...
Yes.
...muffler bearing thread repair kit.
No. But I can see the little cranial gears were turning on that guess with the round-shaped pocket and bottoms of other visible tools.
...a desirable Craftsman cabinet...
Understated, to say the least. Some of you may remember I found one a few years ago with a couple speed shop stickers on the door. Bought it for $35 at a flea, sold it to a guy in California for $250 + shipping!

Nice find.

don’t think knowing how and where to look is cheating. Post it!
Who's game is this?!

No! You can PM me for credit, but I want to post Round 2, with hints, if necessary. Just to see if someone gets it on contents. Don't spoil the fun.

I was thinking some kind of a carburetor tool kit, but the Government Issued clue kind of has me second guessing.
The US Army definitely issued carb repair kits, but they came in a metal box.
PM sent, carry on.
Answered. Thanks, Mike.

Um, er, I will let everyone decide for themselves. I will stay away from the word cheating. But it's not exactly fair, either.

Mike copied my photo to his computer and the blackout had a slight delay, like it does when loading on my own computer, from the original photo, to the blackout markup, which allowed him to see the marking.

No offense to Mike. As I told him, it affords me the chance to segue into a clue, when I say that it was clever detective work!

That is a WWII era Federal Stock Number, and the 6-inch rule also has one. I will post a lot more photos on the Lugzsonian thread.

I can't explain the multiple colors.
I can't either. I plan to do some research or wait for someone with historical forensics experience to explain it.

My son went out of state to visit an old college buddy. He has been there for a day and the buddy mentioned that he bought several pallets of NOS tools. Military stuff. From WW2.

He started texting me photos and asked did I want any. Uh-huh . . . . yeah. I can't wait to see what he brings home!

I left the house this morning, in the wife's car, no less, in pursuit of a specific thing I had seen on Craigslist this am. And after securing it's purchase, I hit a couple estate sales on the way home.

52103891038_7c04f7cc04_b.jpg
"How to Work with Tools and Wood, for the home workshop." by Stanley tools. I paid market value, but the woman was nice, and she will let me know when her late husbands plans are being sold. The other book was from the first sale, which, if I hadn't been in the wife's car, would be the source of much for furniture restoration. I will go back later this weekend, when I have my truck and they are ready to deal.
52103888328_04a44ebc80_b.jpg
Light fixture, KAL 1/2 drive box, Proto 1/4 drive box, unmarked spoke shave. The auto repair book about is from 1917, albeit a 1920 reprint.

The second sale is one I should would have been willing to wait in line this AM, had I known it was happening, but I will have to be happy with the scraps I picked up:
52103844886_e7eb61d254_b.jpg
Plomb and MAC deep sockets, KR Wilson box, Klein snips, small drill bits in plastic holder, Blue Point woodie, import drill stops, Proto puller, (2) Stanley squares, Disston square, and a Proto screw out. In the KR box are drill bits and taps.

Dude 😱😱. I pulled this one off the bay but would love to find a pallet in the wild! So cool!

Those brushes really looked like extractors, but even seeing it open, I would have guessed it was a shaving kit..lol

Maybe the different colors are for use on different surfaces?

My wanna-be garage dog and I went to a barn sale yesterday, way on the south side of town. Pictures featured a leg vise, an old bench vise and several rusty, vintage tool boxes buried in the clutter. All three boxes I unearthed were so rusted I couldn't get the lids all the way open without tearing metal. What I could see inside looked exactly like the bottom of my dirty electrolysis tank. What a mess. The bench vise was a Columbian 404 that was aready sold ($100). The leg vise was priced at $45 but was so heavily rusted that I immediately lost interest. The dog marked several spots outside in case anyone who came after was interested, and we left.

My dad and I went out to the Springfield Swap Meet today. After a slow start, we landed on a vendor's booth that made my day.

$5 Wright Tools impact socket set
20220527_194935.jpg
$15 for this complete, almost new SK socket set
20220527_194849.jpg
$45 for this 3/4" drive Rockwood socket set with Thorsen and Williams ratchets along with a mix of Williams and Blackhawk sockets.
20220527_195744.jpg
Metric and SAE US made Craftsman Professional line wrench sets and US made new Triumph drill set $30.
20220527_200342.jpg
20220527_194905.jpg
And then a 10" Milwaukee bench grinder $40. This thing is AWESOME! I put it on a cheap stand I had lying around, and it makes almost zero sound and doesn't vibrate at all. So much nicer than my 6" Craftsman grinder that I have to chase all over the shop floor and that stalls everytime I put some force on it.

Then after popping the cork on my wallet, I bought a few more things.

One tool I have been lacking a quality set of is hex keys. I have been looking at these Bondhus sets online for a few months, but never pulled the trigger. They have also been out of stock everywhere. Well today I found a vendor with the sets in stock and cheaper than I found online.
20220527_200742.jpg
And then spent $5 on a bag if hollowpoint .40 cal, a bag of 32 S&W, and three .50 rounds.

Hi,
So after all the years of hearing you all brag… I mean Enjoy your “Special Deals” at your local garage sales, I finally got my chance today.
And yes, today is a Friday. I did not even know there were garage sales on Friday. I think the people must be getting things out for the whole weekend and will just cover them up over night? I guess that‘s possible. It seems like a lot of set up and teardown to do two days in a row.

I have to admit it did pay off for them. Which brings me to the story…
It’s Friday afternoon, maybe around 13:00 or 1PM. I usually take a break and walk to my local coffee shop about 7 or 10 blocks away. It’s about two miles round trip. So not far but not close. Walking back, coffee in hand, I see down a street two blocks before my normal route a bunch of lawn furniture up close to the sidewalk. Then I see a sign that simply says, “SALE” parked in their driveway. I thought that was weird for a Friday but decided to check it out.

I get there and one older woman is on the phone sitting on her porch. Another is bringing things from the garage in the back to the driveway. The whole driveway and front patio/lawn area is bordered with tables that have all their things on it; games (2 travel chess sets), books, records. A few boxes of parts and a few old tools rest on the ground. I already have nice older tools and I already have a nice travel chess set. I glance at the collection of classical music records. I notice some boxes that have doorknobs sets. A plastic tackle box, a larger metal cantilever type toolbox are all on the ground farther in. You can’t see these from the street. The cantilever box is very dusty and I can just make out the name on the corner… “Kennedy”. Really? I think to myself. The box is wide with 3 latches, two clasps on either side of a latch for a padlock in the middle.

i-Dms2VWv-L.jpg i-3wrcpsV-L.jpg

I try to open it but there are so many boxes around it that it only can swing open part way. It looks empty inside. I can see cardboard lining the bottom. Covering what exactly? The outside is dusty but no major rust or dents. The bottom looks good with no rust and minor scrapes on the otherwise good paint.

They are asking for $20. I go to the lady on the phone as the other rolls a bicycle out from the back. I pull out some cash, $17. and say, “Would you take $15? I’d like to use the last two for lunch later.” She laughs and says okay. I told them I’d come back for it and hid it under one of the tables.

i-q7sBTSf-L.jpg

Before and After brushing out the dirt. I looks almost new. I wonder how old it is?

i-3pc7DSW-L.jpg

I handed her 3 $5s and went home, returning with my truck to load up.
When I got back, maybe 45 minutes later there were a lot more people there. I was surprised and happy that I got the box early. Some of the guys were looking around and poking through some golf clubs and equipment they had. Luckily I’m not a golfer! Leaving with the best thing there, I got it home and took these pictures.

i-DHBQBQz-L.jpg

i-kGBkJV7-L.jpg

i-tDCHNjJ-L.jpg
The box DID NOT come with any tools.
I am not planning on setting up the box like this, but I wanted to see what would/could fit and how it might look.
The ratchets are top: Snap-on extra long 3/8 (I think it’s 18” long), middle: Craftsman Low Profile 1/2 drive and the bottom is a Hazet extendable 1/2 drive ratchet. I think in this short form it’s about 16 inches long.
The sockets are a Craftsman 3/8 spark plug socket, a 1/2 Craftsman deep socket and a 1/2 Snap-on set from the 1970s,.

i-TQdQJnP-L.jpg
Note clearance of deep sockets with lid closed. Plenty of room!
Took some extra pix if you were curious too.

So anyway, that was my big Garage Sale pick up for the year. Actually the first in probably decades since I don’t usually go looking for them. This one just started up as I was walking by. Pure luck.

Let me know if you can tell how old this box might be.
I looked around but did not find a Kennedy toolbox thread. I might have to start my own, but I do not want to if there already is one.

Thanks for your help.

I’ve always wondered the same. There are quite a few out there with the special stamp, I have a few myself. Yet,it was a catalog item. It must have been very popular so they added it.
Nice find on the KRW too.

ShadowBoxer- great find on a nice box

Lugz- love the Carburetor!

Floyd- those are some serious YOU **** prices!

Alinc- great buy even at that price you did well. That’s the box I was hoping to have found last week, lol.
