I don't have to go to a yard sale to find used tools, all I have to do it dig around a little in the garage and empty the cardboard boxes that haven't been opened since I brought them home after my father-in-law passed away years ago.
Today a neighbor came over to borrow a tool and asked why my Baldor buffers were outside. I told him that I needed to make room to replace the garage door operator, and they were in the way. Haven't used them in more years than I can remember. Time for me to start thinking about divesting the clutter.

I was at a college reunion years ago, and some of us started spontaneously knocking a volleyball around a court. People were watching, playfully joining, and then rotating out when they got tired or just wanted to go do something else. It so happened that the AD came by, and grabbing a pad of paper, took down names and worked out a roundrobin tournament to formalize, codify and systematize the play. About ten minutes later the court was empty, and it stayed that way except for the ball and net.

I've seen that happen with plenty of sports.

Good sale for me yesterday. $20 for the Coleman 1850 powermate generator and $5 for the barely used Dewalt 18v Hammer Drill. Already used a converter and 4ah 20v battery. The drill hardly has a scratch on it.

If nothing's wrong with the generator, that's a You **** deal [said Captain Obvious, fully aware of the irony of the situation (see discussion referred to above)]...

Finally got to see my new to me mini excavator today. Still need to find a way to get it home though. It’s an old John Deere 25 aka a rebranded Yanmar. Best part is that it’s Free!

I'm late to the party, but the Vise-Grips are sheet metal seamers. They are made for gripping an edge of sheet metal (like a turned-up edge for overlapping seams) and bending segments of it one at a time. They also come in handy for gripping any fairly thin object, pinching off hose to shut off the flow, and grabbing leather or fabric to stretch it for tacking.

I bought four of these at a sale 40+ years ago, and have found them to be very useful.

Nice mix of goodies this weekend.
Small cast iron skillet for the wife to paint on. 4 Cman corner clamps and a Stanley Sweetheart panel gauge and a nice old scoop. Got 2 of the small parts boxes this weekend, one a Wards Master Quality and the other a MAC box. A fuel filter and a Coleman LP Gas Picnic stove in pretty good shape. And old 524 Coleman 2 burner stove with the original style round tank.

Also got this theatre horn (per the seller). It is LOUD !!! Think a ships fog horn going off in a small garage. The wiring is suspect, I was careful to turn it on remotely

You **** (goes without saying...)!

What's the backstory? How did you find it, does it run / need anything, and why was it free???

RV - the LP stoves can be ahrd to find fuel for depending on the canster.

the 425 - Nice find! is there a letter after the model No.? If not it is a "No Letter" (NL), and first of the model. adn would make it 1948-53

I like those Parts boxes!

An old man had it for years. Said he emptied gas and ran it dry after every use. Oil was golden like it had been changed. Checked plug, it was dirty and top with nut was rusty. Thought I’d give it a try. I added fresh gas and it started on second pull. My father had a brand new plug in his shop that matched. Swapped out the old one and it ran even smoother. Plugged in some construction lights to try under load and runs and operates perfectly. Pretty excited to add it to my tools for $20!!! Thanks, Mike!

I hope to flip both stoves and there is no letter !! I dont pass on those small parts boxes, I keep the nice ones and flip the rough ones (like these two).

You can't do better than free--unless it's delivered! These people ****:
Outlaw, for his giant free pile haul.
HPRifleman for his free Block grinder and heavy duty stand.
Bobcat753 for his free excavator.

Apparently the other tool thread is only for new tools so I think this acquisition is appropriate to this thread.

I was picking up some stuff from my dad's place and noticed this grinder next to his other grinder. He told me I could have it if I hauled it away.

NICE! Free is best. Is it 1/2hp or 1/3hp? The stand is one I haven’t seen, but fits well.

I found a "double wide" Globe Wernicke barrister bookcase on FBMP. After a quick trip from suburban NJ to Brooklyn NY it's all mine!

I have a soft spot for the "double wide" barristers! I have a GW double-wide that is very similar. My only issue is that I have not found a good way to install LED light strips without drilling for the wires.

no good sales for me in a while. We have had grandkids visiting and I have not gotten out. But I love watching the thread and seeing what others are picking up.

Duddly - lot's of vintage goodness in that picture!

Your GW is beautiful - much nicer than mine is. Did you refinish it or find it in that condition? The finish on all of mine are a bit alligatored and I haven't had the nerve to start the refinish effort.

I have the same issue w/r/t lighting and barrister's - I don't want to drill access holes either.

OxyLED sells battery powered LED strip lights. Some have a USB recharge feature, others have AAA batteries, chose carefully. Poke around 'til you find the size / motion detector etc features that you want. Not terribly expensive to try a few to see if they will work for what you want.

I put one in a closet, and unfortunately, the USB recharge failed because we put too much weight on the cord, and damaged to socket. We should have just pulled the light off its magnet and moved it closer to the charger.

Forgot I grabbed this very clean tap and die set. I would guess it's from the 70's based on the Made in Japan stamp.

Just scored this Dake No 1 arbor press on Craigslist. Seller was asking $100 and I threw a hail Mary and offered $75 via text message. He obliged and I picked it up 3 minutes from my house. Works smoothly and is in great condition.

For the story on the Mini, it was the machine my good friend bought when he went into business. Bought it new and only ever run by him. He has put about 4000 hours on it and still runs excellent. Fast forward to now he’s retired and has bought a Deere 35g a few years ago and said it was time for me to take his old one

There is also a 100 mile yard sale from Statesville NC to Wythville VA on Hwy 21 this Friday Saturday and Sunday. Forecast looks like good chances of rain however

While selling at the fleamarket 2 weeks ago, an older gentleman asked if I would be interested in coming to his place to see if I would want to buy some of his clutter.
He said that he already had several people over to pick, so I wasn't too eager, but the weather finally cooled off to the 80's & my jones kicked in.
I went over yesterday.
Here is my pile for $25.00
Grain scoop, Galvanized bucket, Coke case
Score is the Wards Master hatchet
P1010002.JPG

P1010005.JPGP1010004.JPG

The 12lb sledge is plumb
Thought the 32oz hammer might be as well but can find no markings.

P1010008.JPG

Boy Scout leader's manual I believe 1943 printing
And a watchamacallet, maybe a nut cracker, sort of looks like an English walnut.

P1010007.JPG
P1010010.JPG

It was an enjoyable session.
The seller was an 86 year old barber that still cuts hair 2 days a week.
He and his wife rehabed a barn as a home, nice place.
Definitely a hoarder as the underneath of the barn was filled with auction dollar lot boxes.
It was fun to pick through.

Big sale of a current estate sale operator shedding some of his hoard. Pictures of loads of old tools plus a B-52 Bomb Squadron Patch that I have history with. I called last night to see if I could get on a list and he obliged. Glad I did--I was #17 and there must have been 50-60 people on the front lawn when I got there. As usual with this company, the sticker prices were much higher than I care for, but poking around brought up a few little treasures that were reasonably priced. The squadron patch turned out to be just a print on paper--not even a sticker--and at $8, I passed on it. Another good thing about this owner is I can show him my finds, comment on the prices and he will look them over and give me a "bulk" price.
27 Jul 22.jpg

The first thing I grabbed--not pictured--was a mostly full pint of Teak Oil.
Next was the Hexall No. 1 set. I can't find any specific info on the set, but I can narrow the manf. date down to 1917-20. R.F. Sedgley incorporated in '20 and started using "Inc." at that time. This set pre-dates that event. The little curly wire holding the pawl is the subject of the 1917 patent. I don't know if the set is complete, but it is sure full. The sockets have absolutely no marks--not even a size. I would say that cardboard and cloth are horribly ephemeral things to make a tool case from, but the damn thing has lasted over 100 years--although you can see someone handy with needle and thread has made a repair on one end.
The Cleveland Twist Drill Index was a surprising find as was the Ford branded ratcheting hex wrench from Mossberg--I cant find anything on the model number 16-Z-1411, though...
The Long C circle-H 1/4" ratchet and the Miller's Falls No. 63 ratcheting screwdriver were no-brainers and who could leave a 3" caltrop marked at $1? $30 for the lot and I told him I'd be back on Friday!

A search engine which would need to include terms like "hard vacuum" along with "low pressure system" and so many other words of praise. And since I'm the former host who started the whole concept of a Picker of the Year to begin with, I suppose I only have myself to blame! :) Honestly, BB, as much fun as it was, and as much excitement as I'd like to conceitedly think it pumped into the thread that year, lately I've been bemoaning to myself how much it may have changed the thread in ways I find myself disliking.

Very interesting.

I've never seen that before. I have some welding models that have wide jaws but they are not solid like that. I wonder what it's for. Glass maybe?
Here are a couple of Vise Grips I have that are useful for holding materials being welded.95D6441C-0AB2-42CA-8384-59028E738A7E.jpegEF0E4C07-D8FF-41BE-90CF-88A2F5072401.jpeg

11/16”? AA shows similar Model T reverse and brake bands adjuster. If you scroll beyond that, there are a couple different Ford kit tools at the bottom of the page that have a “Z” in the middle of their model numbers. Maybe it’s a Ford kit-specific number?

Thanks LS! It is an 11/16. Using my eyeball caliper, I'd say mine is a slightly thicker gauge steel but the second layer does not extend the full length back to the tail. It stops and is welded just aft of the ratcheting mechanism. Since there is no guidance for specific use as in the AA example, Ford owners were probably allowed to use it on any 11/16 nut they found. ;)
