On the knife sharpener patent subject... When BB handed it to me and asked what it was (it was a test, he already knew), I recognized it because I have a similar vintage style (with the rotating discs) that mounts. Figuring out the first from all the "improvements" would probably be a rabbit hole, but if anyone wants to try, here's one data point.
OK, finally found mine in the wrong part of the garage / storage area. Mine is patented Nov 17, 1925, to a Herman L Wittstein, #1561895, assigned to Atlas Manufacturing Company.

PXL_20220921_010922883-X2.jpg

What's the difference between mine and Lugz'? mine was for improvements to make it cheaper and easier to make. Lugz' was for the little wings that protect the fingers. The prior art button didn't get me much help til I eliminated most of their search terms

This is the first that looks reasonable.

One less thing to look for in the mess.

Well as near as I can tell that box was not available in a catalog until 1939. The logo graphic was posted on a Craftsman Group on Facebook by Jim Lovelace. I cannot be certain they are 100% accurate.

craftsman labels.jpg

What we do know is Craftsman in the 1930's is very hard to pin down exactly. I can find no mention of your box before 1939,but if the graphic above is true ,same logo as 1936. The other thing we do know is there was overlap/use of inventory/ changes in mfgs. and even availability by region.
This came up on a facebook group and it is definitely 1939 by my process of it's not in the catalog in this tin, under a Craftsman name before 1939. Nice vivid colors on the logo.

A little Facebook and Ebay netted me two items in the mail today. A vintage Metric DOE set and a 1/4" 8pt socket to continue filling a Circle H set I got last week.Only 2 pieces to hunt down now.

Just got around to taking pics of last weekend's acquisitions. First couple pics came from the swap meet, as usual no screaming deals to be found but there are a couple interesting pieces. I think I spent around $50 for the first two pics, about a buck a piece.

Klein pliers on the left next to a Bonney hinge which is unfortunately pretty buggered. The female rat is Husky, a BE Craftsman below that and a Long C Vanadium DOE. A couple Mac combos, Challenger DBE, the DOE's are P&C, Western Giant, and Plomb. Combos are Penens and Proto. DOE on the top right is Williams, combo is OTC, and the DBE is Handy Hex.
IMG_4306.jpg

I don't need any more SK sockets at all but I couldn't leave these ones behind. The Circle U sockets are the first I've found in the wild and I'm pretty excited about the 1/4 stuff! There's also a None Better and a couple Long C next to that. Below that are Bonney, Plomb, Cornwell, and Snap on. The hex drive set I assume is Indestro, don't know why I can't stop buying these hex sets...
IMG_4307.jpg

Next set of pics is from an estate/garage sale. I got there a couple days late and assumed that most of the tools would be gone. I was pleasantly surprised to find a decent pile of wrenches so I grabbed a bunch. When I asked the guy how much, he said $10, so I immediately started grabbing more stuff! I saw an ammo can full of sockets so I grabbed that and some more stuff and offered him $20 for everything, and he accepted. Here's the haul:

The PowrKraft set is complete, the ratcheting wrenches and DOEs below that are Cornwell. The rest is Craftsman except for the little Proto combo at the bottom.
IMG_4308.jpg

Here are the rest of the wrenches, I thought the None Better stuff was cool as I don't see much of it. Then a couple VlChek pieces and a token Snap on combo.
IMG_4309.jpg

Here's the ammo can that was full of sockets, the impacts in this picture are foreign but the top row is Craftsman, and in the middle are Proto, Williams, and Snap on. The real prize (and the reason I bought the can) is in the next pic...
IMG_4311.jpg

Here's the rest of the stuff that was in the ammo can. All Cornwell impacts. Unfortunately the sets aren't complete but I should have some stuff to fill it in I hope!
IMG_4310.jpg

Finally, I stopped by another estate sale and this little heritage box followed me home. For $7 I couldn't say no. It was mostly full of garbage but there are a few things that I salvaged, those are in the next pic.

Stopped at an estate sale on the way to one of my pump stations. Got the at 8:55. 5 minutes before it opened. About 30 people waiting to get in. All of a sudden, neighbor across the street starts yelling about people parking on his lawn/road. Screaming “this is private property! You can’t trespass!” On and on.
Grabbed a small 3/8” drive Crowntop box with extras in it. An SK Wayne crescent and a Snap On 3/8” breaker bar. $20
But that included entertainment too. 😎

That's pretty sucky. Any pics of the top of that box (and logo)?

Picked up this little score of stuff yesterday and fit it all in my MK4 Jetta lol. I don’t know much about the tank stamps etc. to know if they’re still within date, but oxy has ~1500 psi in it and haven’t checked the acetylene. Victor regulators (VTS 400 D and VTS 410 A) and torch (CA1050 torch and 315 body) and all on a nice sturdy home built cart. Does need new hoses and flashback arrestors. 2’ square for size reference. Neat little craftsman toolbox and some USA c clamps and some hammers and puller. $110 for everything, so I felt pretty good about it!

Picked up these two boxes and tools for $40 this morning. Smaller box is a 1936-39 Chrome X Quality master box. Guess I have a new set work on! Sockets ranging from Hinsdale, Plomb, SK, Williams, "chrome vanadium" USA, and Craftsman. Williams 1/2" t-handles, a Owatonna 1/2" breaker bar, several super investor wrenches, a lectrolyte wrench, and some machinist reamers?

Why did you leave the signal corps binoculars behind? Price? Those look really neat.

BD,. are the tanks owner, of lease? Some shops get fussy about owner tanks without paperwork..
Good question; I’m not sure 😬. I think it’s likely they’re owned; we’ll see. I was a little worried about it but for the price I wasn’t going to balk too much and the Norco I go to is pretty chill.

If the bottles have a company name (usually forged or cast into the surface) on the ring surface below the valve, they are rental tanks. That ring is unmarked on private bottles except for an occasional hand stamping.

If they are private bottles, you **** for that haul!

Mostly because I don't want to add another category of things I collect. I think it was actually reasonably priced at $30.
OR, I hear ya on the binos being another category of collecting. But at $30, those WW1 era field glasses were a steal IF the optics were clear.

Nice find. Chase patent, c.1897. If you search the "Oilers" thread on Chase you'll find a few, including Outlaw's and mine, and more info.
Picked up these two boxes
You didn't say anything about the larger one, which is wartime, used primarily by the USAAF and Navy, and made by Kennedy. You will also see them made by Simonsen. Classic deck and flight line box.

EDIT: Both built to Gov't specs, they are nearly identical to the untrained eye. Easiest tell, if no decals, is the shape of the indent stiffener on the side uppers for the lid. Kennedy = triangular. Simonsen = round.

Walked a flea market I had not visited in a few years. Sadly sprinkles/threat of rain kept many vendors from untarping/unwrapping/showing up so I'd day 2/3rds went unseen. After making 2 laps between two booths I dug this small bit:

Check out these $1 pliers. I’m stocking tool boxes for my daughters and reached for these because they are smaller than standard pliers.(knife for reference) This has to be the same Lectrolite which became part of SK doesn’t it?
Also pretty stoked by the $2 Walker jack.

I took a quick look through them and didn't notice any glaring issues--but I wasn't really looking for issues. They gave me a much more WWII vibe--what makes you think they are from WWI?

Friday I hit two sales. First stop had a couple of tubs of hand tools that were unpriced and when I asked if we just make a pile and get a price, the lady monitoring the garage said “Oh no, this is the first day—no piles! The vintage tools are $5 each.” When I blanched at that, she said I could ask the boss. After rummaging for a few minutes I came up with the PL∇MB 4769 Spinner and the Snap-on F70A (1934) ratchet. Then, at the bottom of a box of rusty bolts and auger bits, I turned up the PL∇MB 4749 Pebble Ratchet (minus a screw), proving once again, it occasionally pays to look through a pile of junk. Since there wasn’t a single USA socket in the garage, I went in search of the boss, mentally noting my offering price of $7 for the three items. The boss examined the tools and said $7. Sold.

23 Sep 22b.jpg

The second place was a complete bust for tools so I wandered through the kitchen. I’m on the hunt for an old wooden potato masher to actually mash potatoes with since those serpentine wire things don’t do it for me. On the counter was a flat tray with about three dozen silver plate utensils priced at $24. Normally I don’t give that kind of thing a second glance, but a decorative cake server caught my eye. Classic German motif that called to my heritage and my time assigned there. Went to ask if they would sell it separately, thinking I would offer $1, and they looked for a moment, shrugged and said $1. Sold. BTW, it was 25% off day so it was only $0.75!

23 Sep 22c.jpg

Mrs. Radar wasn’t all that interested since it’s not her style—until I showed her an ebay post I found…

23 Sep 22a.jpg

We all know you can ask anything you want to on ebay but it’s the sold prices that count. I’ll keep my eye on this to see how it fares.

The Tahoe sales seem to be winding down but we made a morning of it with the neighbors. We came home with a few items including a bucket of miscellaneous chain and a Toro leaf blower. The baby had a long day yesterday and slept most of the day so far so I got a fair bit of cleaning done from my buy the other day.

IMG_4090.jpeg

Some notable finds include a Plomb socket that was part of a Rolls Royce Merlin Engine tool kit

IMG_4091.jpeg

and loads of electrical stuff. First time seeing this type of fuse

IMG_4092.jpeg

Can anyone identify any of these below? There are two punches (Cornwall and something starting with a "MA" in a diamond which is the checkered one) but the rest of the items I have no clue. I would assume something to do with electrical work.

IMG_4096.jpeg

Don't know what this long this is, but the end has a copper weight with a "2" stamped on it. Old fuse puller, fuses, screwdriver, and I more unknown things in the top right.

And those old fuses were terrifying as unknowing people realized they could use a penny to replace a blown one. Surprised the house across the street from us never caught fire growing up , they kept a handful of pennies in their fuse box.

Top right in soldering iron picture might be transfer punches, if each body is a different diameter by a 32nd or 64th of an inch.

Bottom items in picture w punches look like old spark plugs w the electrode hanging out. ( But we will find out later in this thread they are Clecos)

Properly called a Soldering Copper, but yes. The "2" should mean 2 lbs. 2s & 3's are fairly common, I have 1 pounders, and even smaller.

My first "House of my own" (rental) was a 30's duplex, I had the back half and 2 of 3 one car garage compartments Only power out there was a single light...

In the basement (my side...) I tapped into one leg of a glass fuse box run, and the second (from the front plex... all ceramic post and knob wiring... ) I had to take it easy on the welder I made the 220 for! Blew a LOT of 30A fuses!
