Haven’t been posting for a while, just been focusing on other things. I did want to post something I thought you all might like though.

This “jewelry box” is now on my desk at work full of office supplies I use daily, paper clips, rubber bands, post it notes, alligator clips, etc.

I got it off Facebook marketplace for $60, which I thought was a great deal compared to what I see people asking for them.

I also had an old air compressor that gave up the ghost. 35 minutes after I put it in the scrap bin I came across this on another site I’m on. New old stock from a guy I know who buys pallet auctions. Hasn’t even been broken in yet.

Husky 30 gal 2 stage, discontinued model but brand new. Got it for $250. Considering how bad I needed one, I couldn’t get my cash out fast enough. Very sorry about the sideways picture.

The trickster in me would have to load that up with some tiny tools and try to fool people on the toolboxes thread. "Just picked up this stack..." lol. Followed eventually, after the head scratching, with said paperclips, alligator clips, car keys etc for actual size context. :)

An interesting, although unproductive sale this morning. House was jam packed with all manner of interesting items of every description, from puzzles to encased precision balances and sailing ships to Erlenmeyer flasks to African and Asian wood carvings to marble eggs to geodes to those little Christmas village houses--and just about everything in between. Almost every wall was covered with overflowing bookshelves. Pretty overwhelming for a 3-bedroom house. For tools, the garage was heavy on bench-top woodworking power tools--several lathes, a old planer, sanders, routers and all their associated paraphernalia. Not really much in the way of mechanic tools and what there was, was meh. All I picked up was this Starrett No. 79 Outside Caliper and a cheap Chinese laser level for $2 each. Only decent looking sale was a professional run 4-day estate sale that actually started yesterday and ran from 4-8. Didn't get their until 5:30 or so but surprisingly still did okay. Husband had a been an autobody repair guy and his still living wife were also avid antique/general collectors. From the photo's it looked like a a lot of tools were long gone before the sale but still a decent amount once I got there. Thankfully the relatively new estate sale company seems to be relatively cheap on tools other than clearly marked Snap-On.

Anyhow, MAC 1/4 ratchet, Herbrand 3/8F/3/8M ratcheting adapter, Mac (Witte) bit set. and after much searching and digging I pieced together a MAC 3/8 drive metric impact socket set.

Vulcan and Snap-On body hammers and a 3lb Blue Point hammer.

Dang, you guys are killing it this week (I fell off notifications sometime Sunday...)

I planned two stops today. “Antique tools” caught my eye so I went to that one first even though the other one appeared to have more inventory. Beelined it for the garage and pawed through the CM stack tucked away in the corner and blocked by a lawn mower. It was empty except for one drawer that the estate agents obviously overlooked. It was full of pliers and a few DOEs but none jumped into my bag. I was a bit miffed because nothing in the garage was anywhere near “antique”—except for one thing that did make it into my bag—more on that later.

I asked one of the agents where the advertised antique tools were and was directed to a back bedroom. Sure enough, the room was full of tools but still no antiques. There was a gentleman looking through the tools and I could tell he was looking for the same “classic USA” tools I like because he was keeping up a running commentary with himself about what he was looking at—“Oooh, a Proto, and made in LA. Nice Craftsman, but it’s later than MDF.” Out of nowhere, he turns to me and says he had come from a sale that morning out in Boerne (pronounced Burney) that was disappointing because even though they had a lot of tools, most were **** from Harbor Freight. Since that was the sale I had planned on going to next, I thanked him for saving me a 60 mile round trip!

Giving up on finding any antiques, I wandered through the house and suddenly found them in the living room. Several braces, a MF chest brace, a corner brace, a few eggbeater drills and monkey wrenches—all well over what I was prepared to pay. Oh, well, I was happy with the antique I found first off in the garage, a brass hose nozzle. With no price on it, the guy wanted $4. Four dollars!? Hey, it’s brass! Hey, it’s locked up—how about $1? He took it and couldn’t twist it open either, so he said Yeah, okay, a dollar.

Once I got it cleaned off a bit, I saw two patent dates: Oct 16, 1877 and June 2, 1885.

The Eaton, Cole & Burnham Co. New York with what appears to be GEM after the dates, although the “M” is nowhere near as clear and sharp as the GE. The first patent was granted to John Gilchrist and Alexander Anderson (196216) for an Improvement in Hose-Nozzles. DATAMP lists 15 patent awards for the second date—none of which sound plausible—but when I try to follow the links, I get a “The page isn’t redirecting properly” message. I’ve had this issue since about the time the new USPTO page rolled out. Anyone else having problems with DATAMP? Also, I can't figure how to, or if it's possible to search USPTO with just a date.

Anyway, I let Kroil penetrate while I scraped the remnants of several washer generations out of the hose end and it now twists smoothly and shoots a strong jet. The only problem is with what I would call the inlet cone on a jet engine—except the flow is reversed with a hose nozzle. When twisted to restrict the water flow to “spray” the cone leans to one side producing an unbalanced spray. Oh, well, when 135 years old I am, work as well, I will not…

27 Oct 22a.jpg 27 Oct 22b.jpg 27 Oct 22c.jpg

But OR's find of a 135 YO hose nozzle blows all other Hose nozzle finds out of the water! Dang that's awesome!

I had this sitting in my rig for quire some time, it surfaced when I cleaned it out for my hunting trip, adn I jsut got pics going:

Mitotoyo NOS Dial indicator, adn a set of 4 glass carpet protectors.

I received this Zenith Royal 500 transistorized radio last week and just completed an electrical restoration. This radio sold for $75 in c. 1957!
A reminder of Rule #2 for this thread...
2. :needpics: Without photos – it never happened.

Edit: Excellent! You slipped the pic in (or it was finally processed by the site) while I was posting the reminder.

I missed posting one from yesterday - also from the Free pile - A Plano soft fishing case, apparently never used, just garage dust. The front pouch still has a new plastic wrapped Plano organizer.

Plano.jpg

And that Segways into today nicely, as I had a TOO just blocks from my house, and this a great score for fishing gear, Mostly boxes of flies!

I started with this: the box case is broken but "usable" but look at the gear inside:

T1 box.jpg

Then the Fly boxes: a solid brass mini fly reel, and an egg jar carrier, exactly like the two my dad had - it is also missing the little "egg skewer" from its spot on the frame.

T2 fly boxes.jpg

More Box details: the PO was Paul A Sheppard (more later)

T3 box2.jpg

This one is cool if containing a really cheap organizer box: Big initials are NTH - the opposite side has a nice hooked Trout engraved

T4 box1.jpg

T4 box4 trout.jpg

Inside, from Norman (T) Hunter to Capt. Paul A Sheppard on July 4th 1939! Both common names, I could find no sure hits Googleing.

T4 box2 signed.jpg

And inside - A felt flap for rigged flies, and the box:

T4 box3.jpg

Other boxes: some were loaded:

T5 Boxes.jpg

T6 Boxes.jpg

All in for $35!

Dang, Pic limit hit! more to come...

Cont:

Some cheap things that caught my eye at other sales - The wood box may become material if nothing else, Bamboo is hard to get. and $$ from sources...:

TA1 Bamboo, Candls card case.jpg

And I wasn't skunked on tools: Plvmb DOE, an Awl, (had part of TUCK inside a frame visible, but rust and a pin are obscuring the view...), An unmarked oil can, A Daiwa 500C mini reel - this may be the smallest practical reel I now own, if so it will go on a super light rig I want.

And the pot came from the last stop - not Revere Ware but similar - a Norris Stamping and Mfg co. Thermic ray 1 Qt pot with a heavy copper bottom. I may do a boil test this vs. a Revere Ware just for grins...

This morning, SWMBO said lets go to a tag sale. She found nothing she wanted. I found unused M6 helicoil, a very old thread die (couldn't read the manufacturer), a Chicago Pneumatic impact wrench that may or may not work, one Plomb socket, a box of gutter screws, an SK extension, antique door handle, and an old Craftsman lathe. $30. Anyone know a match for that particular shade of dark blue King Seely used for craftsman in the 30s and 40s?

1667072194694.png

A few weeks ago. I picked up this old SK machinists chest from the infamous scorned ex-wife. The coolest thing about it is the Douglas Aircraft badge. She sold it and a set of Snap On metric taps & dies for $50. The tap & die set is missing 4 or 5 taps. I was surprised to find afterwards Snappy isn't using HSS taps. I'm still not sure if I should pass it on to someone with access to a truck, or fill it in with Irwin. 1667073118092.png

28 Oct 22a.jpg

I went back to this sale today for their 50% off day, but first let me correct an oversight from yesterday's report. One of the most interesting events yesterday was a brief sighting of the elusive tin medic--only the second appearance this year and he's still using that tired old excuse about the pressures of work. Blah, Blah, Blah...

Speaking of pressures, this time of the barometric kind, the mercury barometer was still there and I scooped it up for $10.
It was made by Princo of Southampton, PA, the apparent industry leader for the last 60 years and the last company to manufacture these mercurial Fortin type barometers. Princo stopped all production of mercury based instruments in 2007. This is their NOVA model 469, designed for laboratory or classroom use versus the slightly more complex Weather Service barometer. And it is complex--more so than I thought it would be--much more complex than those with the needle that points to Fine, Change and Rain! The 24 page instruction book has tables for temperature and gravitational correction, and some pretty hefty formulas like this:

Multiplier for temperature correction and its derivative with respect to temperature:
Mtc = [1+L(t–ts)]/[1+M(t–tm)] – 1, dMtc/dt = – [M–L–ML(ts–tm)]/[1+M(t–tm)]2

I don't know if I'll ever challenge the local weather forecast, but at 42 inches long, it'll look cool on the wall.

A progress report on one of my finds from earlier this year: The Singer 221 featherweight is finally back operational!

It had a half missing plug, which Eprey was used to provide replacement parts, and the bobbin case (critical) was MIA -

That one took some careful study as there are a lot of Chinese knock offs that will not work... and the old originals have gotten stupid expensive. After a LOT of study (and knowing the primary resource for parts for these old beasts had a Chinese replacement that worked) I risked $15 on one and today loaded a bobbin, installed it, strung everything (thank God for PDF instruction manuals, as you are NOT going to guess this right...) and a WAG on the tension knob, adn the first 2" test stitch went perfect! I did a little work with if (a foot or so of sewing) and all works as it should!

Next is a complete lubrication, and a change of thread for some straps I need to do.

test stitch:

And the diminutive 221 Featherweight:

I did pretty well at two estate sales today. The first one had very motivated sellers. I picked up the wire strippers, a set of Craftsman Torx drivers (which looked unused) and nice leather bound handbook, "Audels Carpenter and Builders Guide", published in 1923. It is in excellent condition. I got all that for $10.

The next sale had a few more interesting items. I found a rather rusted Craftsman RHFT 1/2" ratchet that should clean up well enough. Adding to that, I found a pair of Crescent pliers, two files, and a ratcheting screwdriver, all for $5. Tomorrow will be clean-up day.IMG_1300.jpgIMG_1301.jpgIMG_1303.jpgIMG_1304.jpgIMG_1299.jpgIMG_1302.jpg

Last piece is a Buffalo Japan 8# sledge with handle guard.

Forgot these, pieces I'm not sure about keeping/still working on. Wiss garden shears, mystery rod with flattened end(might just be a homemade tool), craftsman flat tip brace bit(brazed to 90° rod), Blackhawk 1 or 1-1/8 socket(button is frozen after evaporust and oiling)

Finally the lot is finished, now only two handfuls from other sales remain for tomorrow.

Replied to an add in a car club newsletter. A corvair was found on a recently acquired property and the owner wanted it gone. I went to retrieve the car. When it was on the trailer he said look through the scrap metal and see if there is anything you want. First saw a boom pole for a tractor. That went in the goes with us pile. While we were getting the pole we were standing on scrap metal that turned out to be 9 sets of scaffolding. That too was in the comes home pile. All for the cost of a couple hours of loading and driving and a handshake

Jacobs976, the three black-handled items in the first photo are Dzus fastener tools. Sort of screwdrivers. The Dzus fastener was developed for aircraft cowling and inspection cover retention/access, and releases with a quarter turn.

I’ll second that.
Dunlap catalog listing for the carbon scraper. 67E11E11-BD35-495B-885B-75C70DD23D68.jpeg
From a time that a company would actually lock in a price & print a catalog that would last a season or two.
Now days the price can change from when you put the item in the shopping cart, till you make it to the check out.

Bonney 3/8 deep well socket set, craftsman Kromedge metric tap and die set(missing the tommy bar and screwdriver, threading bits may not be the right ones. Tried finding a proper example to check but couldn't find anything listing the parts), KD extractor case
My best guess is the 28 piece set listed here:

Went back to the greenhouse last month and picked out a few pieces that were still there, overlooked a few originally since it was overflowing with random stuff before.

Everything was in the valley so it needed some more effort to clean up, the terminal pliers looking like they had been in a flooded compartment of a boat for a decade before cleaning with the rest just having hard spots.

Superior Chicago fence puller, Crescent D27 slip joint pliers, 60R duck bill pliers(not marked Snap On or vacuum grip but has the vacuum grip pattern), Plomb 218 terminal pliers(marked KCCR and L.8.6.L on flats with Plomb 218 on side, no other markings), mystery socket/bit(almost 1/2 drive female, just a hair too small, with hand brace bit male), Williams 13/16 raised lettering wrench, mystery wrench(marked 24 with forging mark an M in a circle)

Also this piece which I've had trouble finding any info on but got my attention. Bluepoint Supreme 3/8 wrench, looks to say S-1014(S-10 is clear but 14 is a guess because pitting). Brazing is just splatter. Only 16" long with a bend about 1/3 down the handle.

Also this lot my father picked up for me while I was working on the Snap On top and bottom box. There's a little corner off the highway going an hour north where people set up stalls, last time I went there was a guy selling a semi load of Craftsman, Husky, DeWalt, and Milwaukee tools(all new with open box or individual pieces, ie guy had about a hundred ratchet wrench sets all new but bound with zipties then a few dozen new Milwaukee impacts and batteries without boxes). This time I guess it was all older tools and cheap stuff. He brought me the two wrenches for $6 and gave me the case and the socket from the Snap On universal socket set he bought.

Snap On KRA-229(1963) 1/4 flex ratchet set case(no plastic insert), Snap on SW32A 1/2 drive flat tip socket, Williams 1-5/16 1-1/8 DOE, Bluepoint 1-1/16 1-1/4 DBE(bent on one side, hard to tell if it was done with a torch, hammer, or as a prybar given the chrome missing like it is)
