It’s been a great year for Garage Sale Thread acquisitions and much like Old Saint Nick, Old Radar has been keeping a list and checking it at least twice.

Since I’ve been accused (once or twice) of being **** retentive, I felt compelled for my own sanity, to track the who, what, when, where and why of the You **** awards as they were awarded.

Here are the stats as they stand this afternoon:

Total You ***** (and their derivatives) Awarded: 482
Number of members receiving at least one (1) You ****: 79
Number of members Awarding at least one (1) You ****: 47
Top Three members Awarding You *****: mikeinri (95); Outlawmws (53); Old Radar (40)
Top Three members receiving You **** awards: bmwrd0 (40)(well deserved PotY!); Old Radar (38); Davefr & saukit tie (24)

Other interesting (to me) stats:

The highest number of separate Suckworthy hauls: bmwrd0 (15); Old Radar (12); Davefr & saukit tie (11)
GhostintheMachineShop and Technologyteacher each had only one Suckworthy haul but received 12 and 9 *****, respectively, for them.

Just wow. Thank you for figuring this out. I do not think that anyone else has ever done this.

So, we have a few days until the start of the new thread, and I am wondering what, if anything, are people looking for, wanting to do, or anything else about our odd, little hobby.

I, for one, am looking for more vintage machinist tools, and am hoping to make it to the big Portland swapmeet. I have missed it for the last few years, even though it has been back in full swing. Also, in the spring I am planning to make a swing through Nevada and California to visit friends and family, and making plans to stop and visit some of the swaps I remember from my time down there, obviously hoping they are still there and operating at some sort of capacity.

So, what are your thoughts and plans?

BMW, I want to back off the Insane hours my work has demanded the past few years, and do some fishing, and dig in and do some serous reorganizing. With the work distraction, its gotten a bit ugly...

No real focus on "What I want next" that seems to evolve as I go. Ofttimes its the little thing's, not the big.

I, like BMW, am looking for machinist tools and accessories for my shop lathe and milling machine. I collect drilling related hand tools such as braces, breast drills, hand drills, and related accessories, so I am always looking for the really odd or unusual hand drilling things. I also am interested in hand carpentry tools such as planes and saws but I am getting pretty fussy about what I buy because I am running out of space to store or display tools. Lately I have been picking up books and old catalogs related to the things I collect, and also books about steam power and locomotives and local history.

Lugs, I hate to be bearer of bad news, but I’m pretty sure musical entry alerts have been a thing since people started hanging bells on doors. Wouldn’t mind hearing a little Ozzy when I walk into a room though.:deathmeta

Now that I think about it, you might be on to something here:headscrat Licensing might be an issue..lol
Well, patent a musical doorbell that can be heard outside. When you look at the door security camera you can remotely choose the tune.
Door to door salesman or other unwanted people at the door.......how about Tiny Tim, Tiptoe through the Tulips?

I usually spend the winter ice fishing if we have good ice on Lake Erie and looking through eBay for pieces I haven’t found at flea markets. I really need to clean my shop up, organize, and get rid of some **** in there.

I still consider myself the new guy, and more of a fan than a true contributor (other than the freebies I've scored at work, etc.).

But, WOW, that statistic is a little scary!

BTW, HUGE thank you to Old Radar for keeping this going, keeping us honest, and keeping it fun.

Looking forward to all the treasures that are found in 2023!!!

1. Organize my storage and bench area so I can finally;
2. Be able to find a specific tool when I need it and;
3. Stop having to stack two projects on top of each other to get space to work on a third, before I;
4. Inventory my many partial sets and;
5. Develop a better organized list of what exactly I need to flesh them out.

Easy...

So, we have a few days until the start of the new thread, and I am wondering what, if anything, are people looking for, wanting to do, or anything else about our odd, little hobby.
I'm going to be looking for vices(standard lot, woodworking, jeweler's, maybe post, etc), woodworking tools, a 48oz ball peen hammer, anvils(jeweler's and metal working), and anything else I can think of that'd be useful to make up a nice multi purpose(wood, metal, pipe, etc. Pretty much anything and everything) work table for my shop. Plus I'll be looking for anything interesting naturally.

Already have some pieces for the table I've collected over the past year(including two small stainless steel commercial kitchen bowls and a small anvil from my recent liquidation lot) but construction is still in the design phase till I've gotten enough pieces to get an idea of the dimensions and orientation I'll need.

Also ideally downsizing my collection quite a bit. Keep finding interesting stuff so I get it before it ends up in a tool rippers hands but I don't have enough interest in everything to designate a spot for it. Have the top of one box filled with WW2 era SO, another Plomb, another misc truck brands, and more stuffed in random spots around my office that I don't intend to use and don't want to go through and start a new collection to begin another hunt.

Congratulations to Beemer & Smoke, and thank you very much Old Radar for running a top notch thread.

I've been super scarce this year due to situation and priorities (nothing bad), but rest assured, I still peeked in almost every day to live vicariously through all of you.

Looking forward to lurking on next year's thread.

Sounds like several of us have a similar need to identify, reorganize & purge. Me too. I call that a thriving hobby!
Another thing I want to do is build a workbench twice the length of my existing one. To do that, I need to recover space by reassembling the dismantled parts of four drill presses, two wood lathes, and a table saw…if only my work bench were twice its present length, so there’d be space to do that…

Most definitely those two.

Plus, organize/empty our 2-car garage so I can get at least ONE car in there when they need work (my wife would also appreciate being able to just park in there).

Same with the shed.

And the basement.

And the attic...

Basically, need to purge and reorganize all of our storage areas that have just blown up over the past 16 years of raising kids.

We've been good, but not great, about getting rid of toys and clothes as they're outgrown.

We did a big cleanout of the house to host Christmas (first time in two years) which feels great, now we need to keep the inertia going to reclaim the storage areas!

After that, MAYBE I'll have time (more importantly, space) to go hunting for tooling for the Jet mill/drill (assuming that doesn't get sold as part of the purge)...

Mike

My goal for this coming season is to add onto my shed outside so I can create some more room in my small/odd shaped garage. I am looking forward to the coming project as I enjoy these types of things. Also am looking forward to the space this will generate in my garage so I can pull a car halfway in to work on it 😱

Well, as others have said, cleaning ,organizing, finishing projects at hand before half-a$$edly starting another. Also a pending change in my eligibility to collect my pension and work situtational changes may be directing more shopping/garage time/less working time. We shall see.

Christmas eve at the in-laws, my sister-in-law, "if you want my mom's cleaning up her garage and you're welcome to anything you want." Me, "ummm, sure." My wife, "that's definitely the best Christmas gift he received this year." For sure :)

H.D. Hudson cistern/pitcher hand pump; old man glasses; brass clip and ring; Stanley 10ft tape measure (30-040); Railroad track anvil; True Temper mason's hammer (no. 12B); Keen Kutter tack puller; S.M. hammer ?; Craftsman ratcheting box wrench (10mm); Cape Cod weeder; rubber and wood mallets; Craftsman 3 1/2" vise (no. 391.5180).

Any thoughts on the maker and purpose of the SM hammer?

That’s a real nice free haul there. Funny thing is I had a free tool haul tonight too. Wife got wind of a woman giving away baby items, household items, and tools down the street. Tools? Everything outside for the taking.
I said no way, can’t be tools. Probably toys, baby toys. Maybe towels. Well, we walked down there in the dark about 7:30 and the lawn‘s loaded with baby items, and the curb had all kinds of stuff.
The wife grabbed a few items. I grabbed two buckets of nice new nails (not pictured), bucket of badly rusted tools that clearly had been wet at some point. Pliers, plumbing tools, concrete, chisels,etc.. nothing photo worthy, just damaged household tools. I shined my light in another box and woah! What do we have here In this oily old baby wipe container?

6176F845-3B30-480A-AAB4-2C87DFFFDDDC.jpegThat can’t be a Williams breaker bar. Wait…is that a?:LOL: No way!

A Williams B-40 and M-51, plus an S-K adapter and spinner. Several bits. The little bar is nothing I just stuck it with the breaker. Not bad for a Monday night.

Heh, nice. I spent the day disassembling the lathe I bought a few months back to get it into position in my basement. Even taken apart, that thing weighs A LOT!
