Small haul today but after 43 days with mostly sweltering heat and no tool sales, I'll take it--for $3!

LS Starrett Scriber
General Hardware No. 78 Automatic Center Punch
"MAC" RBW-5 6pt Ratcheting Wrench, Pat. No. 2,500,835 (Why the quotation marks?)
MAC BO2024 Offset DBE Shorty, Pat Pend
Sturm Ruger Shot Lock (Taiwan)
Springfield Armory cable lock--what I theorize is a barrel lock for 20 inch long guns. It has only one hole in the lock case.
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

In the left behind category, what I've always referred to as an "US" knife and what my verbose GJ'ers with an Army affiliation call something appropriately more verbose. Even if we don't agree on the name, I think we can all agree $42 is too steep a price.

You might be thinking of a different knife, or letting your sense of our verbosity enlarge your memory on this one. Some collectors call them "G.P." knives, which is the same amount of letters, or "MIL-K", which is two more letters, but phonically just two syllables! :)

What was the date? $42 is outrageous, and looks like the seller was making wishful prices up in their head, unaware they're common, but these were made as early as 1945, a fact I don't repeat without giving @gpw_42 credit, since I had always thought of them as Vietnam era forward. Now I check every one I see, and I probably would lay down two Andrew Jacksons for anything in the 40s or 50s. My oldest is a '68.
EDIT: I'm still waiting for Steve's definitive guide on the early MIL-K's, but he posted one in the 'Knife' thread. Just a little before your Western.

I was traveling through a ritzy part of the Boston suburbs after picking up a used fireplace screen/tools/andirons for my mom's fireplace and spotted a second hand store. Since such businesses can sometimes have gems in the detritus, I stopped in. No joy. They did have a tool section, but mostly junk tools. The only interesting thing I saw was a crowntop-era belt sander that I had no need for.

Without question!

Flyers are simple creatures and tend to follow the path of least (mental) effort. I can imagine a conversation with an AF flyer holding that type of knife with someone from our sister service who requests to borrow it for a moment:

Army: Hey, let me borrow that G.P. knife for a minute.
AF: G.P.? All I have is this us knife. See, it says so right here on the side.

Alternatively:

Army: Hey, let me borrow that MIL-K for a minute.
AF: My what??
Army: Your MIL-K knife.
AF: My milk knife?? WTF is a milk knife? You mean a spoon?

OR, don't over-complicate things with your quest for pilot-level simplicity. :ROFLMAO:

In the Army, that'd be "a f'in' pocket knife" or maybe "a f'in' GP knife" if someone was really specific (ILO what OTHER f'in' knife?). It's collectors who make things complex...

ILO = in lieu of

The one that always drove me nuts was inserting "IOT" (in order to) into a sentence, where you could just write "to." But people melted down if you didn't use IOT. Crazy....

Oh, it's hardly a quest--more like a medical condition!
Every Service, every organization, hell, almost every state, county, city and subdivision has some kind of jargon or short-hand descriptors. It's just fun to point them out sometimes.

It seemed like most of the tools had been picked over pretty well. There were some hidden away little gems though.

Ford dust covers, Tap/Die hidden in a mortar training box, Wooden steering wheel with some others and a Rochester Service box

I have had three or four of those stainless U.S. knives, I think all made by Camilus. The oldest had wobbly, worn-down carbon steel blades and brass liners; I have no idea how it came into my possession, probably found it in a junk drawer as a kid and nobody stopped me.
Two I bought new with my dad in the very late seventies (I think ‘79), by mail from Cabelas catalog after having a carbon steel knife rust solid after forgetting it was in my pocket at the beach. They were entirely stainless, and I really liked them. My dad gave me his after I lost mine. Then I broke the spring on that one.
I probably shouldn’t share this, but here’s how: open both opposing blades to 45°, then boil in water until you hear a sharp “click!” That’s the spring snapping under stresses that it was never intended to endure. Works for carbon steel multiblades, too. Bottom line - this is NOT an effective way to sterilize a knife and simultaneously flush debris from between the blades and liners.
My hope is, I’ll find the one I lost (it could happen).
EDIT (found the one I broke)

I was busy all day and never had a chance to post my flea finds from this morning's trip (Lugz 2023_26).

2023_26A.jpg20230_26B.jpg

I have a couple number only Numberalls made for the BELL SYSTEM. These came in this tin with a little wooden insert. Made in the 30's. One goes from A - M, a second from N - Z, and the third is 0 - 9 and some special characters.

The Williams pouch is later than my early, prewar, and wartime Superrench ignition sets, but I've already discarded the chromed partials and moved a full Chro-Moly set into it.

Went to a sale today that was posted as an "Estate Sale" on CL with no pics. They did mention tools so I figured I'd give it a shot as I had an errand to do in the neighborhood. Rolled up to the house and it seemed like a bust until I got in the back yard...family was clearing out their recently passed father's basement and like so many other seemingly innocuous houses in Seattle the basement was a full on workshop. These Boeing guys seem to have an obsession with recreating their workspaces at home.

Anyway it was the first day of the sale and the family was definitely fair but not looking to give anything away. I left behind an older Snap on mid box for $50 and they also pulled out a machinist box with a riveted on Snap on badge but it looked very Kennedy to me. I tried to buy the whole thing for $50 but they wanted a lot more than that so I asked if I could pick some stuff out. They were agreeable to that and even let me into the basement which had several Wiltons and some really big Columbian vises. Apparently they knew what the Wiltons were and had sold a couple already but I told them to make sure they got good money for the Columbians too. I dug through the stack in the basement which was full of USA wrenches but not much of the stuff I look for. I wish I had taken a couple pics of the basement but I was in picking mode and didn't do it:mad:

So here's what I took home for $30...they also had a bunch of tap/die sets and a bunch of other stuff that would be gold to the right collector. I told them to post some pics on CL and I imagine they were probably mobbed this afternoon.

The bigger stuff is pretty obvious, I was excited about the Snap on and BE rats, unfortunately the little Snappy has a broken selector switch that has been jury rigged. The swivel sockets to the right of the rats are also Snap on, then there is some SK 1/4" stuff, Indestro metric sockets, a few Plomb, and some random wrenches including a Circle X 2013.

Overall not a huge steal but these folks were really nice and I spent an enjoyable half hour or so picking through all the stuff their Dad had left behind. Hope they sell it all!

One interesting LEFT-BEHIND. Those are swastikas, but in the Hindu/Jainist sense. They are tobacco silks from the late 1800's to 19 'Teens. I almost bought them just for the novelty. The hems have a hand sewn branding and address in New York.

So as you have seen me allude to in past posts, my solo enjoyment of garage sale/es sales has become a family adventure outing now. My wife and son come along and enjoy the thrill of the hunt. As my wife has seen me do, if I see something I know I can flip for good money, I buy it and post it on local fb or c list classifieds. Heck, I buy tons of tool boxes so I can have a tool sale every few months to make some extra coin.

However, recently it hasn't been me who is killing it, it's my wife. We have recently started picking up inexpensive or free home decoration items and reselling them through fb market place. My wife has a good decorative sense and uses our house interior to photograph items for sale. Case and point

-3 weeks ago, at the sale where I had to leave the vintage coldspot fridge- my wife picked up a free table that I showed a picture of. Less than a week later she sells it for $125

-2 weeks ago, at that sale where I got the vise/workbench and the snappy mid chests and other things, she put a bunch of decorative items into our pile and she has been selling alot of those items for ridiculous amounts. The table that had wicker on the side of it, she sold for $160. (we paid $150 for the whole lot). I did sell the filthy workbench and vise for $125 and will sell the tools at the next sale.

-last week while we were out to breakfast with my son for his birthday, we spotted a "sale" sign in the country. You know, the kind of country where barns are on every property... so we followed the sign. It was the second day of the sale and everything was free. I couldn't believe it. We loaded up a truck bed full of decorative items. I didn't get one tool item but I didn't care because I knew what these were for. She listed the items and so far has been doing pretty well and there still is lots more to sell.

So far from the past 3 weekends of house decorative items we are $500 in the green. I would have not given any thought to most of the items she picked up but now I'm keeping my eyes peeled for sure!

Picture of last weekends "free" haul

Picked this up Facebook marketplace. Came with a bottle of argon, argon/co2 mix, a few spools of wire, and a pretty mint looking spool gun for $500 canadian. I've been wanting to get a mig welder forever to replace my crappy flux core machine, and the spool gun was an awesome addition, I have a few aluminum projects I'd like to do. Can't say I've ever welded aluminum before, but a couple of the welders from work offered to come over and give me some pointers.20230618_195146.jpg

Went to a yard sale advertised as tool heavy. They had a lot of nice stuff in all major US brands and all were marked with prices. The prices were pretty good and they wer negotiable which was nice. While I didn't see anything I needed or couldn't live without, I bought a few things just because the price was too good to let it sit. I grabbed the NOS USA made come along for $15, the Moresafe welding helmet for $5, lot of mini screwdrivers with local advertising on them for $1, the Wright case with screwdriver bits for $4 for a buddy who collects Wright stuff, both baseball bats for $10, and the Huot roller bottom for $10. It's in nice condition with no rust. Unfortunately it was painted red at some point (it was already red from the factory so not sure what happened there). I really don't need it but I will find a use for it. It looks to be 50's-60's to me but not sure. It has square nuts holding the casters on and slotted screws holding the handle on if those are any indicators. All told $45.

An unusual day at the flea. $20 for the new metric Proto set. $20 for the new SK set.
My dilemma; they are so nice I don’t know what to do with them 🤔. May have to sell.
James
Great deal on the Proto metric set. You definitely **** for that one!

I picked this up at a moving sale recently. The seller lost the table and mounting hardware, so I ended up contacting Grizzly and spending more for those parts than the whole sander.

Grizzly disc/belt sander - $100
Table and mounting hardware - $125

Not a steal, but a good deal to me, and only had to drive a mile from home to pick it up.

Hit an estate sale but found almost nothing. I went because I saw a lot of broken furniture and I needed a piece of walnut for a pistol grip. I did get that but also picked up this garden wagon for $25.

I don't have the "chutzpah" that my wife has while selling thing on FBMP. She doubles my initial thought of the listing price and every time it sells at or close to her value. She is the daughter of a wheeler dealer father so she watched him from as a child . . .

Today I picked up a Gilbert fan at the FM.

SWMBO and I are road-tripping up to Maine to meet our oldest and her betrothed for an early birthday celebration for me. Of course, I found an estate sale nearby and we stopped in to look around. Second day of a family-run sale, but the family apparently thought the dearly departed's junk collection was a gold mine. Lots of "collectibles" dragged out of the numerous ramshackle outbuildings, shipping containers and old RV trailers and priced at junk shop prices (or better!) were still there. I found nothing I wanted, but SWMBO dug out two cast iron plant holders. My initial offer of $2 each was quickly rebuffed.
"Well, how much do you want?"
"$15 for the pair."
"How about $10?"
She was already reaching for them..."No, $15 was a bargain."
I gave them back and left empty handed.

See attached pics for other cool left behinds.

Same pawnshop where I scored the SnapOn 1/4 drive haul a couple of weeks ago….

Dropped in this morning to see if anything new has dropped. Ended up bringing home a full set of Matco 3/8 deep Metric impact sockets, an almost full set of Matco 1/4 metric impact sockets, an almost full set of Matco 3/8 impact swivels, a Matco soft grip long 3/8 ratchet, and a Snap On 1/4 swivel comfort grip ratchet.

This batch of stuff is a lot rougher than the last stuff. Both of the ratchet handles are pretty ratty, and the SnapOn ratchet is kind of beat up. The sockets are dirty but don’t appear to have been used an awful lot.

For $125 out the door, I still think I did OK.

I skipped ahead to the pics, missed the lead-in caption, and thought, "I hope he's not talking about the back of that Bell truck and whatever that red dumper is!" I have seen people use just about anything to hold a plant and call it artsy. :)

If that's a "0" after that visible "4" - I don't blame you for passing. I have two, one big, one small, and I got lucky on both.

Went back to Thursday's sale yesterday to see if the 18" Tower and Lyon corrugated sole plane was still there. I didn't want to pay the $24 opening day price and neither, apparently, did anyone else. Settled for $15. Failed once again to take a "before" pic, but spent an hour yesterday and a few more hours today cleaning it up. Most of the chrome is gone but most of the japanning is still there.
O.R. Chaplin's patent date on the iron is May 7, 1872 with a couple of improvements from John J. Tower on July 4, 1876. This is a Type 3 from between 1887 and 1899.
Normally the tote was Vulcanized (Goodyear!) India rubber but the plane was also available with wood or metal totes.

Some stuff from a couple weeks ago. First up. A ?50s? Portercable router with a planer attachment but no blade for the attachment. I'm considering ebaying, since I don't think it is a user and it is well outside my kind of collectable. The baseplate has a funky fence that might have been a prelude to bearings on bits.
