We went to two community wide garage sales yesterday and although we saw plenty of sales we ended up completely shut out. Today my wife, daughter and granddaughter went plant shopping, leaving me on my own for a couple of hours. I checked Craigslist and saw a block sale in Berkeley about 10 minutes away so I checked it out. Nothing worthwhile to be seen but I talked my way into a seller’s basement and came away with this rusty 18” Stillson wrench. Here are the before and after pictures. Is it Pexto or is it Walworth? Maybe both. IMG_8680.jpegIMG_8681.jpegIMG_8682.jpeg
After cleanup. IMG_8696.jpegIMG_8694.jpegIMG_8695.jpegIMG_8697.jpeg

Took a long drive in the country Saturday, heading for two sales, both of which had a few things of interest.
52879577763_ea0c3da1dc_c.jpg
At the second sale I found the two-headed adjustable, Craftsman ratchet and boxed pipe reamer, along with an almost complete set of Bonney Whitworth sockets, and I searched high and low for the missing 3/16W socket. The first sale, a barn/shed with some tools, is where I found the woodie driver and Blue Point T&D box. Sadly, the box is in pieces, the bottom part broken, cleanly, into three parts. So, I do have some work to do on it. But, it seems to be a metric box, and I might shuffle my BP metric T&D set into this box when done.

This was a great week for tools here, both vintage and modern!

First were small hauls from Habitat and a pawn shop.

Habitat: pair of tack pullers bundled together, W. Johnson of Newark, and a USA Great Neck. Handful of vintage sockets stuck out in the mix, including 2 old Cornwell, 2 Snap-On 9/32 drive, Powr-Kraft 8 pt, Husky, and a real gem of an adapter.

Adapters for dummies. The sizes are on it, how smart. Long before the import brands did it.96979231-0FA8-474E-979D-FB10F73CD71E.jpegPawn shop find. There wasn’t much as far as tools.

Another Shrade, with sheath! Had to ask about it, and the price was reasonable enough. Apex bit driver, and a minty looking P&C 1/4 extension!

Some nicer newer stuff for a change. A regular had a load of Snap-On and Matco. It’s not often I see his table before it’s picked over. It hit the wallet a bit, but I bought what I thought was priced affordably.

sorry about the dark shots

-Snap-On long trim clip tool
-Snap-On striking prybar set
-Snap-On 1/4 socket driver
- 3 Matco locking ratchets: black standard length and long 1/4”, long 3/8”

This was my favorite find of the day, from the seller with the Snappy and Matco above.

Saw the tin on another table and it had a couple pieces inside. Odd hex drive t handle and rare Snap-On screwdriver? I’m in! I was shocked to see the knurled sockets scattered on the table. I looked all over and there were only six sockets. I kept my cool and offered $5 for the lot after buying the tools in the last post, and he accepted. :bounce:

Later I circled back looking for the lid, and noticed a bin of taps I’d overlooked. I spotted one hex drive socket that goes with the t handle and grabbed that!

Then I saw it! The spinner! It’s square azz ended self mixed in with the taps. :shocking: I had to keep my poker face. I turned around and tell the seller I found a couple pieces. He laughs and tells me take them! Man, am I glad I circled back there.

Went to mondo "manly man" estate/tool/shop sale during lunch on Friday. Prices were plain outrageous - at or above new cost. I bought a new-in-wrapper cassette tape and saw maybe two or three others actually make similar small purchases. Everyone else walked out empty-handed and shaking their heads.
Shelves were still full at 1pm and actually heard the gal working register say "Looks like we're going to have to go to at least 25% off tomorrow." I didn't even bother to go back.
Saturday, tho... didn't get farther than 20 miles from home before busting the budget before noon.
Had to cut grass and help junior study for geology final today so haven't finished sorting.
Pix to follow.

As an addendum to the conversation last week about selling garage sale/estate sale finds, sometimes its about waiting for the right buyer. Saturday, I received a $75 payment for the rusted out, barely cooling $10 Coldspot fridge I bought back in 2015 (here: https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/attachments/1fe147851a8e026eb770f33715f892e4-jpg.1237426/ ).

The "buyer" was an Eversource rebate program for turning in old appliances, and they even came and picked it up from my garage. That works out to a tidy 49.63% APR return on my initial investment. Sadly, the market for rusty old fridges doesn't support an enduring investment strategy.

Now, before the preserve-old-things crowd gets too riled up, know that I'm a card carrying member and still have and love my '49 Coldspot garage fridge, which is fully operational and in much nicer condition. This other, smaller Coldspot was too far gone to be worth saving, and even the parts were beyond what someone would want for a restoration. Sometimes, you just gotta let them go to the great metal shredder in the sky. And when Eversource will give quintuple your investment to do so, all the better.

Wow! I got busy doing (and supervising) some landscaping work around the house for a couple of days and suddenly find I’m three pages behind on my favorite thread!

There’s a lot of Suckage to go around so I’ll keep it brief.

Bluebolt for the Tetanus threat of a lifetime

Jacobs976 for the precision tools and drafting sets

jb books for everything! Great haul!

Raineman for the $3 sprayer and socket rails and $15 Little Giant ladder

10thanncobra for his Starrett, Snap-on & Milwaukee haul

And 3Bay for the cobbled together Hex set and Snap-on tools

I've got a couple of finds to post, but for now I'm back out in the yard!

Long day in the yard. I'm beat and won't last much longer.

Friday sale had lots of disappointingly "meh" tools. I spent $15 on the tools that interested me. I was intrigued by the clutch of 3/8" drive tools with only the C-** part number and no branding--the 1/2" is R-10. Using my research skills, finely honed by my time here on GJ, I discovered a Penens discussion between Lugz, et.al. and found they are more than likely a contract batch from Penens. Good to know. Thanks gentlemen! The 8" tommy bar is, of course, unmarked but the thin flaking chrome is very reminiscent of Thorsen. The other 3/8 hinge handle is a Duro Chrome 4481. The brass hose nozzle is branded Royal and has Pat'D Italy and 75 on the opposite side. The rusted Western 648B knife caught my eye for reasons I can't determine, but using those research skills again found a site that was particularly enamored with them--especially if they have bone stag versus "bone stag Delrin", whatever that is. Sounds synthetic. Anyway, to make a long story even longer, I was cleaning it up with Simple Green and a nylon bristle brush and was surprised as I watched the chalky white scales turn dark brown/blackish. When they dried, they returned to chalky white. I know nothing about knife handles. Can anyone tell if bone handles normally react this way?

05 May 23a.jpg05 May 23b.jpg05 May 23c.jpg05 May 23d.jpg

Saturday I went to the second day of a sale that was offering old tin & enamel advertising signage--mostly sporting thermometers. I was interested in a round Verner's Ginger Ale thermometer just because it's the best ginger ale I've ever had. Fearing the exorbitant prices these things go for I didn't bother going on the first day. I was surprised the Verner's sold the first day--probably because it was "only" $75 and not because anyone in Texas recognized the brand. Most signs were priced at $200-$500 but a long, thin Ex-Lax sign had a $1000 tag on it. I'm not sure I'd hang an Ex-Lax sign in my home for any price.
On my way out through the garage, I noticed a beat up red tool box on the floor and had to open it. What I saw was a 3/4" wrench set covered in dirt and dried grease. I was barely able to discern the name Chief Wrench Set and 14BD on the remnants of the inner decal and picked up a few sockets and drive tools to confirm they were Blackhawk. The tools seemed sound but the box was a mess. Someone had burned the front of it brazing the latch back on. The paint is badly deteriorated and the what's left of the inner decal is barely there. And it had a $75 price tag. After citing the many flaws, the lady running the sale declined my $25 offer, pointing out it was the first day. She did come down to $35 but wouldn't budge any further.
It took me all afternoon to de-grease the tools and box. I found I'm missing the 1-1/16 60034 but have a Bonney 1-3/16 HD-38, a size this set did not include. The tools are vastly improved but the box didn't really get any better.
All tools and sockets are stamped either 1-, 1, -1, or 2. According to AA's calculations for the year and design factors for the decade, I believe this set comes from 1952. Polished chrome eliminates the '40s, while the 1953 catalog changed the set number to 14B (vs. 14BD). My only doubt is the catalogs show (I know, I know!) Bald-Head ratchets in the set vs. mine which isn't really a Freewheeling rat either.

Beautiful ratchet and great set! That ratchet mechanism is circa 1947 from New Britain. Came in 1/4-3/8 drive and they’re fairly tough to find. I don’t know the patent for the mechanism, couldn’t find it, but here are some NB examples. If course the handle is traditional Blackhawk but some cross references.

OR-You **** for the 648B (and Blackhawk set). Those are fairly sought after by the "Fred Bear" archery community, as that is the knife that came in the Fred Bear knife set.

Many years ago, original sets were going in the $400 range. I've not followed the market closely though in a while. They are reproduced now (the sets), and the guys reproducing them scarf up those 648's when they can find them for use in the kits. That may be salvageable depending in the pitting. I would guess that the handles on yours are delrin and when that material breaks down, it gets white like that as any petroleum based material does over time when kept in less than ideal conditions (wet/damp/dark etc.) Similar to 3Bay's Schrade Sharpfinger shown a few posts ago (which I add an additional **** for just for that knife). I'm sure I'm not telling you stuff you don't already know. Everyone who has seen (and smelled) a deteriorating plastic handled Craftsman screwdriver knows what I'm talking about.

I do not think that Delrin breaks down like the butyl in acetate handles.

It is a lot more stable.

Agree with Raineman about the knife's delrin handles/scales. Perhaps a better description would have been "imitation jigged bone, made from delrin." OR, not sure if there's a way to preserve or restore the delrin.

For anyone not aware, we have a vintage knife thread located here, showing a variety of civilian and military knives from the 18th Century (IIRC) through about the 1960s or 1970s:

I'm still working on the Bandit Shed. Yesterday was mostly cleaning and demolition of an old wood cabinet that was home to 2 large rats and 2 babies, their home is now on the firepit. I did come up with this cool find, this Schrade Handyman 5th Anniversary Charter Member knife and case.

Two estate sales and a handful of garage sales ($57): Revere Ware 8qt, 6qt stockpots; 6-Wentworth 250pc wooden puzzles (1-NIB); IOxygen 42-4 cutting torch; 27 early machine cut nails (1815 - late 1830); Columbian D-63 1/12 vise; Moooi Corks stool (by Jasper Morrison); 11" blue/gray coral; Triner Postal Scale (pre-1919); Richards of Sheffield Kwika-Kut scissors; Henry Disston D-23 crosscut saw; Cannondale Hobo C854 backpack .
Pic 2: Agaitized coral 7"x7"x3".

The winners were the puzzles and the Moooi cork stool. Learned a lot about vintage nails.

Made it to a few sales this past weekend with 3 producing some nice stuff. 1st sale was a continuation of a barn sale/living estate sale from last fall. Sadly the gentleman has passed and the property has been sold so the family was selling the remnants. Lots of good stuff, Snap On, Mac, Proto, Blue Point, etc. with fair prices but not as good as the during the previous sale. Spent $112 in total for the following. 40" 12 drawer Masterhand(?) tool cabinet/roller. ($100) Great condition other than the faded paint and some random stains on the drawer fronts. I might try to freshen them up with my PC random orbital polisher. Ball bearing slides and double slides on the bottom 2 drawers. Looks to have been sold at Tractor Supply a few years ago. Nearly a direct copy of the Craftsman/Waterloo design. Also grabbed 2 body hammers (Mac), stanley hacksaw, Napa version of the 3/8 RHFT ratchet (stamped USA NB 47, so new britain I guess), and a lightly used sharpening stone, $1 each. Scrounged some free items out of a dump trailer parked in the driveway (with permission). Full can of liquid wrench that looks like it rolled around the back of a truck for awhile, masterlock with key, snap on stubby straight blade driver, blue point 90° snap ring pilers, goldblatt 12" taping knife (needs clean up). From inside the house, Canon A580 digital camera ($5), Klein 10 in 1 screwdriver (marked 25 cents) which they combined with a porcelain figurean for my wife for $2.

Sale #2 listed tools but nothing special, I did find a Craftsman BE 1/2" breaker bar for $1.

Sale #3 was listed as an estate sale but was more like a big yard sale spread throughout the house. I managed to find 2 nice carabiners, Black Diamond & Petzl, $1 each.

Nice find on the polished handle ratchet. Tougher to find unlike their Craftsman, Easco, etc. counterparts. Those are Easco made. The part numbers likely followed their earlier New Britain socketry part numbers.

@bluebolt -- That's a nice commemorative Handyman knife set! I've got a Handyman lapel pin if your interested in an even swap! :ROFLMAO:
@ctuai -- Interesting hunk of coral. I've never seen one that has undergone that process. I'm pretty sure, though, it is displayed 180* out from the way the little coral polyps engineered it.

It's an agatized fossil coral colony geode with botryoidal and drusy formations (I think). It's the state rock of Florida. It's also a reminder to never go into the mines of Moria.
