Garage sales have been kind of sparse around here, not like before Covid, but we did stop at a couple of TOOs (seems like either they don't advertise or there are so many places on FB for ads they I can't find them easily). Found a partial set of 3/8 drive SK metric sockets among a lot of junk rusty tools that were overpriced. Only $5 for the SK sockets, but more for some of the junky stuff.20230604_082025.jpg

And then a sweet little Craftsman grinder and these Vise Grip clamps for $20

You **** for the nice little 1/4hp Pre-Block grinder--better than many current 1/2hp grinders.

Passed on this mossberg set for $10, I passed on it because I don’t have any space or desire to have one of these sets.

Smokeshow, the Ford padlock and key came off full sized Broncos from the 1980s era. It locked the spare tire on the swing out rack in back. JimDon
Thanks! I was wondering if it was a full size lock.
Mrs. Radar and I just got back from the long Memorial Day weekend spent with my younger brother and his wife on the shore of "Lake-O-the-Boonies", Indiana. Quiet, peaceful and relaxing, due in no small part to the lack of connectivity. Just finished reading through the last three pages and here are my replies and comments:

Lugz: Thanks for the info on the tool roll. I would not have suspected it was offered separately from a wrench set, but can see how it might be needed as a replacement as a high-wear item.

Alinc100: You **** for that $7 haul!

LS: Thanks for the vector on the Bonney marking on my socket box. If there was something there, it's long gone. Also, a belated Happy Anniversary!

Smoke: I found that same Ford padlock w/ two keys and a silicone pad on the shackle over a year ago for $1 and sold it for $70. JimDon is correct about it belonging to '80's Bronco spare tire racks.

Beemer: You **** for those machinist tools!

Oh those crazy Red Devils! We'll buy anything with 96 on it! ;)

96thBS Coin-1.jpg96thBS Coin-2.jpg
Thanks for the lock info! I just might list it on the bay and see how it does. I like Ford items but not enough to keep it if someone wants to pony up.

Lots of sales around now with the good weather upon us. 3 different towns that border my city for some reason decided to have their town wide yard sale thing going this weekend, man I hate when they double up let alone triple up! They are pretty good about publishing participating addresses on respective town websites but unfortunately they give you no idea of what each address might have unless a participant also publishes on CL, FB, newspaper, etc.

Anywho, from last weekend after much digging at the only sale with any decent tools, Snap-On SAE nutdrivers, Snap-On SAE DBE, Snap-On combo at 10mm!, Gray Canada metric DOE. $1 a piece

Hit only one sale first thing this morning of a gentlemen selling off his late father's tools who had been an engineer at Bell Aircraft. A whole mishmash of stuff to look through but dug out some decent stuff.

Nicholson File set that looks unused, a couple of unused Diamond adjustables in industrial finish and a Blackhawk 3/8 ratchet and corresponding breaker. $20 for the lot

You get a **** from me for the Blackhawk ratchet and hinge handle! Those look to be in good shape.

MrsLS & I are expecting to have all three LesserDottirs and their LesserDogs (and a boyfriend) in the house this afternoon, so we snuck away to Jake’s flea this morning for some quiet. I figured it would be a minor morning, as it is Saturday (Sunday is best there), there is a WWII Weekend not so far away in Reading, and there are multi-family and community yard sales in several nearby areas (Emmaus, etc).
IMG_9173.jpegThe contents of the pic resulted from releasing $68 from my wallet, $60 of which went to Bob the Toolman for the Bonney 3/4dr sockets, extension and PH32 point dinging hammer head. He was sticking to his prices today, so I didn’t get them for as little as I wanted, and left behind a torch-burnt 4285 3/4dr Bonney rat, likewise burnt Bonney 4288 hinge/extension and a 1930s Snap-on 9/16dr 1-7/16” 6pt.
$8 split to another Jake’s vendor and two garage sales on the way home, netting some masonry bits & screws, deck screws, made in Germany sm perfekt driver, Hinsdale belt adj rat, Goodell wood-handled glass cutter, Shaw&Field spade brace bit, Lufkin no8 rule holder, Snap-on feeler, unmarked inside calipers, Henry G Thompson & Son “Milflex Midget” saw, Red Devil S&H Co linemans, Bonney B17 dikes, Par-X 3/8dr 5/8 socket, Wright Barberton MU-52 4/8dr 1/2uni, hickory hatchet handle, Estwing 16oz rip hammer (with bonus 8’ vinyl tape wound round the stacked leather handle, I guess because one disc had a nip out if it), unmarked putty knife, 6” Channellock slipjoints, three Wizard ignition DOEes, 8” Berylco BECU slipjoints, 3 Millers Falls stubbies.
Nice pick up! Estwing and Channellocks

Saturday, I was able to spend the whole day tool and treasure hunting, and had a few good sales lined up to hit, one of which I had been waiting all week for. But, as that was the first day of the sale, I pushed back my planned arrival time and hit a couple other sales first.

The second sale was another big tool sale, and yes, there were a lot of good, older tools there, but sadly, mostly stuff I already had or not in my collecting wheelhouse. But I found a couple things:
52949442897_5edb76d862_c.jpg
The brace bit bag(!) and CS Osborn tack puller came home with me from that sale, while the Vaco metric nut drivers (an almost complete set, only missing the 9mm) was from the fourth sale that day. The stuff in the lower right corner came from a sale last week, but were left in my truck by accident: Klein 3in1 tap, phase indicator, and CS Osborn leather punches.

The fifth sale I hit was a TOO, sort of. It was a last minute (well, I am in this area anyway, lets see what is out there)
52949436782_eb3cf45b2a_c.jpg
This sale turned out to be in one of the nicest area's of "the City", and I was surprised at what was there. But, in any case, here is what I found: Stanley sweetheart #104, Nicholson body file, Millers Falls eggbeater, and Moody jewelers driver set.

The big sale I was waiting for...

The Big Sale, my third stop, ended up being a total bust. The pictures online had shown a lot of tools, but the good ones were being sold in lots with tool truck boxes and I certainly didn't want to drop a grand + that day. Any other tools were either cheapies or general shop tools that had been painted red. No thanks.

But the very first sale I hit that morning was the place of my favorite finds:
52950194459_f904000b66_c.jpg
a Williams breaker bar, and a wooden box!
Why is that so special, you might ask, well, here is the inside of the box:
52950498798_4df52ee71d_c.jpg
While full of taps in sizes I don't have, it is also a Mossberg set box, with a great stamp on the inside, and both tags on the ends:
52950051481_a8936eedf3_c.jpg
very happy for finding this, as I have the set, but the box of that one is in pretty bad shape.

So, even with a bust of a sale, a pretty good day.

Camille Contal is more known to other tool collectors as the inventor of an interesting multi-speed breast drill that isn't very common.
Tres interessante!

Since two subjects are colliding, I will be more specific than I was above. Most collectors give credit to Mossberg for the first socket set, but they're wrong. Camille Contal was selling a pressed steel detachable socket set, known as the Auto-Cle, the world's first, with a tubular reversible ratchet, in France and England in 1902. Railway Appliances Corp. was the first importer here in the US in 1905, then Quincy Manchester Sargent in 1906, then Mossberg, who bought him out, in 1907.

Outlaw,
The extension has a Duro (D-I) look about it to me. I suspect that the hole in the extension may be the same size as the crossbar holes in the D-I spark plug sockets. They are sometimes unmarked.

Don, I think you are fight, no marking on mine, for D-I, but the 3216, (the "1" ia very faint) and Made in USA are there:

D-I 3216.jpg

I haven't verified the hole size, yet, but as soon as the sockets come out...

So these are part of a war tine set, I'l keep them together... I need to pull things together and see how much of a set I can make someday.

That's a cool drill! I have never seen that one.

It seems to me a Mossberg W/E!

MrsLS & I resumed our circuit this morning with a trip down PA309 to the Quakertown flea, then a stop at the parking lot flea at Weil antiques center. I spent $50 on the following.
USMC loose nails shipping box, with two handholes added posthumously, an address of Columbia PA on the “bottom,” and a hand-lettered bonus “PLUMB” added on one side, unmarked shallow red hip roof socket tote, aluminum ice cube tray full of pegboard hooks, Craftsman underline tap drill index, which now I realize must be missing some sort of internal hinge, Stanley Bailey No.5 needing cleanup but otherwise intact, tiny reground Bonney no21 DOE, war-era Bonney DBE, Bonney soft face hammer, two Stanley Handyman drivers, Plomb ignition wrench, Perfekt handle driver, flatsides XceLite 1/4” nutdriver, Toyota P2 driver, tiny Winchester dikes, NeverSlip replaceabke-jaw linesmans, Plomb P2 driver, Blue Point ignition driver, Channellock bent nose pliers needing new blue grips, Snap-on heavy duty dikes, okd Stanley P1 driver, Craftsman underline wheel pulley, Millers Falls P3 stubby, Vacuum Grip battery pliers, Forsberg Whale Nocombo driver, Bonney sockets, Craftsman BE sockets & tee, Irwin Bell System driver, Dural Bell System 6’ folding rule broken at 66”, Duro Chrome “X” 1/2x9/16 short DBE, large old KeenKutter DOE.

It seems to me a Mossberg W/E!
Apparently!

My LEFT-BEHIND's on Thursday included this Mossberg No. 1 set.

I already have a No. 1 Auto-Cle set, with very early ca. 1906 "Q.M.S." (pre-Mossberg) branding, and a huge (double-decker) No. 14 Mossberg set, so I wasn't interested enough for the price.

It was a funny conversation, though, because the first thing the guy said when I started looking at it was, "Made by the shotgun company."

I politely corrected him. "I can see how you might think that, but different company."

His partner (there's never just one, right?) immediately said, "Same family, though. I think they were brothers."

I politely corrected him, too. "I can see how you also might think that, but no, they weren't related."

Sellers who don't know what they're talking about and don't mind trying weird angles like this hoping the buyers are less informed than them crack me up!

Couple other LEFT_BEHIND's included a former padlock collectors' display case I snapped a photo of just for our founder (Pic 1) and a Western Union toy telegraph set (Pic 2) that I, like a ******* in a hurry, forgot to go back and bargain for...

Ok this pushed me over the edge. I've been sitting on a partial set of these. I even drew out a wooden rack in CAD to house them ,allowing for the handle spacing, etc. A guy who sells a ton of tools locally has a partial set ,that would include your 9mm, 3 of the other 4 in the listing fill voids in my set . I've sent him a message and I will tuck the 9mm away (with the Armstrong line wrenches) to send at some point.

EDIT: After a bit of digging I'll have to modify my layout as the 12mm and 13mm don't exist. I can probably stop looking for them now.

I would have bought it, but most of my tools are users, thats not very usable for work, I don’t have anywhere good to display it, and way to heavy to ship to someone who would want it. Yes I should have have bought it but, “If could’s and buts where candy and nuts we’d all have a merry frickin’ Christmas!”

Thanks Smokeshow69, hinge handle/breaker is in very good shape. The ratchet is in very good shape cosmetically but was a little squeaky and rough in operation but fed some Hoppe's gun oil into and working very smooth now.

There is an automobile swap meet once a year at the local fairgrounds. It happens on the first Sunday of June. Today was a good day, mild and dry, with little wind. There were a few empty slots where vendors didn't show up, but pretty busy. I found some interesting items, one of which was a beat up old tool box with a mixture of cast-offs offered for $10.00. After finding a few useful items in the mess, I decided to take on the task of combing through the mess. The seller even loaned me a hand truck to haul it out to my truck! AYFKM!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Yo, if you're not keeping that, PLEASE put my name on it for future trade! I would totally construct a display cabinet out of that for my USMC tools. Can't wait to see more on my USMC thread.

Oh, and...

Well at least we know lugz thinks it's "just ok" :) Tell us how you really feel about it:)

I already misplaced a few things, but this is the majority…

SK, Utica, Globemaster, and Snap-on… $41.

I should have bought so much more of the Snap-on, but I was being hurried out of there by my wife. She had an event that she had planned on going to for ages… but it was so reasonable… I could have, and should have, bought 4x the Snap-on easily.

I messed up the Globemaster pouch while cleaning it. It was basically brand new, except it was covered in 70 years of cigarette tar.

I didn’t really need the 3/8” drive 15mm SK, but I have an affinity to them. I used this style SK sockets as semi-deeps for decades before I had real semi-deeps.

I suppose all those tools are brand-identifiable to those with a will to do the research, but the nested-diamonds Craftman linesmans pliers (41-P-1839) jump right out at me.

They certainly have that look. What is interesting is that Craftsman had very few if any contracts with the Ordnance department. They did have contracts with the Signal Corps if I remember correctly. WW2 collectors have studied the RA PD pictures for years.

I'm supposed to STOP buying stuff LOL. Went to a place that was selling lots of woodworking equipment and casting foundry stuff. Here's my finds. 18" x 19" steel plate 1 1/4c thick, some kind of angle plates?, 2 Emmert 18" patternmaker vises, Columbian quick release wood vise, Barrett Machine fixed base vise, big steel pots, maybe for casting sand, casting crucible, a nicely made railroad track anvil, some of the unfinished castings, 4 carts, 2 large round wheelbarrows and more I'll add in another post.

More parts from the same sale, push cart cast iron corners and wheels, a map cabinet I got for a buddy sitting on one of the carts.

Two sales via Facebook yesterday evening and today at lunch, picked both up after work today, it was a hefty round trip and I spent good coin but a lot of flipping value I hope. the tools in the Dewalt Tstaks are only emptying contents of the Craftsman box so I could lay it down to load. There is one more deep drawer Tstak still in the car for a co-workers set. It's likely I will sell off my spare new Dewalt trolley and use this one as its a bit more well used. These are only a quick preview.

Here is a WW2 image. IMG_4012.jpeg
Don, can you please share other images of what was in the ww2 gmtk? That image is really cool. I’m interested in the other tools included in the kit. Do you have a complete gmtk in your collection?
