I've been working on the Emmert 18" pattern making vises I picked up recently. This one was laying in the dirt, dried mud on it and rusty. Everything was stuck including the main screw. I power washed it and put it on the work bench to work on. Over a couple of days I used a hammer to TAP all the movable pieces to loosen them up a little. The main screw was still stuck though. Today I decided to play with it a bit . I started to look for for a can of PB Blaster and found a can of Kroil instead that I picked up at a yard sale. I used that on the main screw and other parts and used a broken breaker bar handle to work the main screw back and forth. I took a break and let the Kroil work its magic. I came back and the main screw was starting to turn!!! I wire wheeled the slide and worked the main screw back and forth and put more Kroil on. I could now run the the main screw and jaw all the way back! Now ALL of the vise functions work, swivel, tilt, taper, all 4 bench dogs and of course the main function of clamping! Enjoy the photos! PS I paid $20 each for both Emmerts!

Sometimes a guy can get lucky at good will. I was there when they opened this morning and as I went in they were setting out these three metal cabinets for $20 each. Based on the mfg they are old office supply cabinets. Have a total of 13 shelves between the three and they are 36" wide by 18" deep by 72" tall. I grabbed all three as even spending $60 is still half the price of one same size generic metal cabinet ordered from Amazon. They're going to be great for some storage needs. It's always fun when I find stuff like this because the only vehicle I have is a two-door hatchback. Luckily these were able to halfway slide in and I could ratchet strap them to secure them lol. Took 3 trips to get them home.

Outlawmws, it's been there about 10 years talking to the family member. I was real glad how quickly I got it back in operation.

Unfortunately no, but the guy working at the store recognized me, or at least my little car, when he wheeld them out to load. I have also put some similar sized shelves in there, plus some even sketchier loads. Only pick I could find is of a desk, so here is that lol.

Left behind for you guys. This was sitting at the end of a driveway during our travels. I thought for sure it would be packed with tools. Maybe a spinner ratchet. Nope, nothing. The wife thought I was lying. In the owner's defense, it did have the tray.

'Round these parts, anything at the end of a driveway is usually considered free. Something lightweight like that would probably disappear, regardless of marked price.

In my area, that price would be wildly expensive for that box.

It would have to have tools in it or be new in the cardboard box to sell for $50.

Snerk.

Same.

That would be wildly expensive WITH a mess of miscellaneous tools in it in this area (Koinkidinkilly, I just posted a story about the Heritage era version of that carry box stuffed with tools for $10 in my spotted- toad-in-a-cup post.)

I suspect it was FREE and someone forgot to take the original loaded with tools price off.

The wife says no more tape measures.
I will PM you my address! :)

No, seriously, that is cool. I love anything bicentennial. You should post that in the tape measures thread.

A couple highlights from this weekend's trip:
At my first stop, a retired mechanic was laying these out on a tarp on the driveway.
The hub puller was in a plastic bag.
I recognized what it was, but didn't know Craftsman sold these, (made Western Forge)
I took a look at an ebay listing for the puller & have an idea that's where it's headed.
For a tidy sum of 10 bucks...
The Craftsman puller
A brass Schrader air gun that works.
Valve stem puller
Craftsman strap wrench
KD depth gauge
Craftsman C-Clamp

P1010002.JPGP1010003.JPGP1010004.JPG

At another stop, was disappointed to see another fella digging long wrenches out of a 5 gallon bucket & making a pile.
I waited till he was done & he left me 4 Proto metric double box.
These are thin walled compared to my Craftsman that I have in this size.
For a buck each.

P1010005.JPG
At another stop for a dollar
This table top swivel vise
Only stamping I can see is MF Co, Made USA
P1010007.JPG
And for another dollar, A Plumb hammer, handle stamped Leader
And an interesting Keystone RR stamp.
I am not a RR buff, anyone have any thoughts on that>

Maybe the seller priced by eBay standards? Figures he’s saving the buyer $15 shipping, LOL. This one has the newer plastic handle. I like the one in your pic better, with the rubber-coated rolled steel handle.

Yee Haw!!! Emmert K1 patternmaker 18" wide jaw vise #2 is fully operational! I worked on it for a few hours today getting it unstuck. The main screw came loose quickly but the dynamic jaw was stuck in the main body. I removed the main nut and the swivel mount and got out the Kroil. I wire wheeled the slide that was accessible and went to work. Using a dead blow hammer I managed to slowly tap the dynamic jaw loose. I wire wheeled the rest of the slide and reassembled the vise. I could now turn the main screw by hand even without a handle. All the other functions, taper jaw, swivel, tilt and dog legs are working. The two front dog legs are broken but they are available for a reasonable price. Enjoy the photos! Looking at the identification chart this is a U5 version.

The next door "son-in-law" who is helping them clean up 40+ years of hoarding calls it the "magic curb" - anything you put out there disappears.

I put stuff out at the curb and if I have a lot of smalls I will put out a table. Last time I did that someone took all the stuff off the table and took the table. Now I have to put out a FREE STUFF except table(s) sign.

I did some picking this weekend and came up with this cool old drop front box. It has black krinkle paint that is just falling off the metal. I can't make any sense out of what is left of the logo. Any help?

Cheers

Jim

It took a while to decipher the letters, but I found a reasonable answer. Themac tool post grinder. Tool post grinders often came in a drop-front steel box in the last century.

https://themacgrinders.com/

The parts list for the discontinued J2A model lists a carrying case, part number 603P, which may be a plastic replacement for a metal case.

LesserSon beat me, but I researched more information!

Our first Tahoe sale of the year was rather sad. There were plenty of tools to go through but almost all of them were imported and I don’t mean that in a good way. I found a couple of Snap-on short metric combos mixed in with the discardable wrenches and when I went to check out the seller snatched them back up as if I was trying to steal them. At least my copilot found some things for the granddaughter at some other tool free sales.

Great job on the research! That is definitely the Themac logo on the box. I tried a number of combinations of the letters I could decipher but my google-fu failed me.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the box but the paint is in horrible condition so it's likely to get repainted. I'm not sure if I can or will recreate the logo.

Cheers
