Raineman, what did you pay for the Herbrand set? It looks like it is in amazing condition. That is my favorite kind of vintage.

You did great all around.
Let’s just say I’d have paid a lot more than it was marked. I’ll play this one close to the vest in the event alinc does in fact want them. I intend to get some mileage out of this one, haha.

I love the faux bois metal box.

I have ignored Herbrand for years, but that set is pretty fun.

Wow, lots going on. I’ll have to take a minute to unpack all the posts.

In the meantime, I had a cool day, but one of you might hate me in a bit.

Estate sale this morning by a family. Heard about this one a month ago and couldn’t get there, but they set out more stuff this weekend. A buddy called me yesterday to give me a heads up.

Plumb hatchet, and drilling hammers and a Craftsman hammer, all appear to have original handles.
IMG_4440.jpegIMG_4441.jpeg

From the top left, 3 Snap on pieces, SK, andSK Wayne swivel socket, MAC socket combo, Herbrand mini pliers (alinc), SK socket combo, and 2 Snap on drivers. Got all this and the previous ones for $20

IMG_4442.jpeg

Then went to a flea market. One tool guy I get a lot from was there and got the following from him. Bonney combos, and a Blackhawk combo for a set, and I found this Blue Point 12oz ball peen at another vendor. $8 for this lot.

IMG_4444.jpeg

Now…this is gonna leave a mark. While I was looking through combos at my tool guy, my Mrs. started laughing at the other end of his tables. She said, “Hey baby, didn’t you just send one of your GJ buddies a bunch of Herbrand stuff?”.

“Yes” was my reply. She picked up this tin and walked it over to me. I just shook my head, reached into my pocket and grabbed cash and handed it the guy.

This is proof that when you quit looking for something, it shows up. I sent alinc a couple empty Herbrand tins I had been trying to find pieces of for years. Not a week later I find this. Unbelievable. Yes alinc, this, and the mini pliers are in your care package pile.

IMG_4445.jpeg
IMG_4446.jpeg

Its complete too, and it kills me because I collect 1/4” drive sets.
Oh No,buddy that is all yours. I don't collect enough of any brand to warrant that . You've got a keeper with that wife..and that set. I gotta look ,but I might have the pliers.I was just playing with a mini Channellock set a couple hours ago. But I did buy a differently marked MEB13 and some Blackhawk wrenches today,

Our first ES stop today was advertised as a "diggers delight". It wasn't quite a "digger" by the time we got there on the 2nd day but there was a lot of stuff. The workshop was immaculately organized with everything hung nicely on the walls or organized on shelves.

I picked up a cool Temperature/Humidity gauge and 2 Sucrets tins for $3.00 total. I bought the Sucrets boxes to show my kids the precursors to Altoids.

Only one sale listed on Craigslist and it didn’t look worth going to but we had to go to town to pick up mail and eBay purchases in the afternoon so we drove by. My first impression was correct but we poked through the free pile and came up with a perfect evaporust tube like the one I have in the Bay Area plus some rusty Vise Grips and a highly modified ball pein hammer.

For bmwrd0 here is my adjustable wrench like the one he found today. IMG_7429.jpegIMG_7448.jpegIMG_7449.jpeg

Ecotec, based on how hard it is to find in my area I’d say keep ignoring it. Its like hens teeth.
It is common here. I see it all the time. Not as nice as the set you found. That is a really fun look.

For hardline, like sockets and wrenches… I stick to the four truck tool brands and industrial brands like Proto (and Blackhawk and Challenger), Armstrong, SK, Bonney, Wright, and Par-x. If I can find metric Snap-on, I had a good day.

I broke my 3 week winning streak this weekend. I didn’t find anything I wanted. I better hit the flea market in the morning, if I want to appease the metal god. He needs an offering.

The fifth stop. Oh boy. First, I am glad I didn't try to get there at opening, as it was a madhouse apparently. And, from the ad, I can see why: https://www.estatesales.net/OR/Portland/97229/3697242
This place was packed to the gills with the type of things that flea marketers, junk dealers, antique stallers, and others of our type go nuts for. Here is my haul:
52980439503_3dbc03b3bc_c.jpg
Heritage socket box, book on HF (1927), partial RTEC socket set, Klein flush cutters, unmarked ell handle, Lectrolite DBE, Williams combo, Wright socket box, SK Tools holiday tool roll, Williams brace, Walden & Snap on socketry, TW DBE, vintage BB's, tap sets, and an adjustable I have never seen before:
52980129089_840acb9575_c.jpg
Also, the SK roll is two sided, and here is the other side:
52980358575_175db13966_c.jpg
And finally, I found the Heritage socket case out back behind the garage, upside down in a bucket. I wasn't sure about it at first, and then I opened it:
52980363085_3b896d26e4_c.jpg
While the set is incomplete, what is there has the original BLO coating still on it! And, the missing pieces of the RTEC set were in it!
52980363480_0e714a76ce_c.jpg

All of that was only $25. I was plumb tuckered after an hour of searching, and never even made it into the main part of the house. I am going to try to make it back on Sunday, as that is half-price day, and I just know there is going to be more to uncover.

Some pretty good suckage here! I wasnt able to make that sale today but I'll swing by tomorrow and see if I can find any cool scraps!

I was probably just going to go to Royal Oak flea market, but will probably go to breakfast for Father’s Day. I forgot about it.

We went to Greenmead, in Livonia, a couple weeks ago.

Happy Father’s Day to all you guys.

I had to scroll back a few pages. As others said, lots of goodness posted lately. Hard to not mention more people.

3jakes- gets a YOU **** on those Bahco beauties.

Alinc- nice find on the Craftsman earlier polished panel wrenches. YOU ****.

Squez- welcome. Lots of goodness in that box. Bewtween the Williams set, the newt little Klamp Klaw box set (haven’t seen those in a while, need more pictures), plus a magnifying hammer, can’t tell if it’s Starrett? I would say you deserve a YOU ****.

The vintage gas can with glass fill dial is cool as fudge, as is the Raybestos dolly, and the antique screwdriver, and I was pleasantly surprised to see an early script New Britain logo on the 12 oz. ball-pein, but the best thing about today's Father's Day flea haul (Lugz 2023_20)...

2023_20.jpg

... is the story surrounding the triangle.

It was on a table in a jumbled mess o' miscellaneous tools and when I picked it up, the vendor cackled. He was having a good time with a couple friends, a full set of teeth between them all, maybe, every time someone grabbed it, thinking they were picking up one wrench.

"Do you know what it is?" he asked me.

"Of course I know what it is," I said. "I grew up in the sticks."

He stared at me blankly.

"It's a triangle. To call the cows home. And the men and kids, too. For breakfast, lunch and dinner."

"No," he said. "It's an instrument. You know, like the Rolling Stones drummer. What's his name?" And he took it from me and pinged one side in atrocious rhythm a few times.

"That is, indeed, also known as a triangle," I said, taking it back. "But I'm pretty sure this one here is probably more like a ringer."

When I took it back and slapped that clanger around all three sides as fast as I could, everybody in the general vicinity of the flea market stopped talking to see what the source of the alarm was, and the geezers all got this even more slack jawed look on their faces, like, oh, ****, I think he's right.

One Father's Day YS - one box of "grandma's tools I've stored long enough, I don't even know what is in there"

Post "cherry picking" and for ten bucks - Not everything was a cherry, but...:

Orange box is Oxwall, nobody's "cherry" but the Meteor ignition wrenches were also in there, and the 2 "Oxwall Like" on top - I wanted the box as much as anyting so I have a place for the "Oxwall examples" - Plane missing the front knob is a Stanley, Crestalloy dykes, 3 Powrcraft, wood chisels, one Fulton, the puller turned out to be C.S. Osborne, and derusted nicely!

You could not see the lettering before the rust was removed:

The handle has tiny "pinstripes" both ends:

Good story. That screwdriver has kind of a Winchester look about it.

Pretty sure it is. As I was standing there, I couldn't find a marking, and I couldn't remember exactly who made them with the dove-tailed, keyed, or "lug-and-notch" (as they referred to it in the catalog) ferrule until I got home and I checked my drawer and notes. Then I found a "CHAMPION" branding on the shank. Very happy with that find.

I am googly-eyed ga-ga for the gas can, though! One of my coolest finds this year. Glass dial (let's see who is paying attention...) shown in Pic 2 below. Additional cleaned-up close-up teasers, too.

Lugz, somehow I had assumed in the original post that dial was a sight plug, I didn't realize it was a gauge - that is very cool!

Is it a gallon? and what doe the smell tell you of its contents? gasoline? white gas? something else?>

The cap also looks, odd... And Am I seeing a handle on the bottom on the gauge side?

That file is great for yard tool type work. I keep one on the outside of my box, closest to the driveway, for hoes, shovels etc that need a touch

Question for the collective: -is Evaporust safe for Japanning?
If the japanning is solid, yes. Otherwise, a **** shoot.

Not sure yet. Gas or white gas.

Boy howdy!

You are!

Your questions are shrewdly sniffing this out! :)

I'll post more on the Gas Containers thread later, but, for now, the gauge is... upside down. :)

In my experience a soak in Evaporust plus a wire brush will remove Japanning. If you just soak it and then wait for it to dry before any scrubbing then it doesn't come off as easily. I avoid soaking plane bodies now though unless they're in terrible shape rust wise. If I do have to soak them I try to stick with a plastic brush.

In my experience, just a wire brush, powered or stiff metal, will also take off japanning. A soft brass brush won't. But if you are far enough along that you are considering Evaporust, your japanning is so far gone anyway.

Electrolysis is generally good at protecting solid japanning also. But if it's comprised, it may come off as well as in Evaporust.

Thx on the E-rust input Guys, I think I'll try it on one piece I have from yesterday -that bit brace taper cutter. I have been using a tooth brush post E-Rust, but that can wait til it dries too.

I am planning to be there around 10-10:30, and I am sure there is gonna be a ton of stuff still. That was a true digger sale.
I went today...not much to be had but got a few things.
It was near the end about when they farmed out to MIC, and got the "Crab claw" wrenches.. :wtf:

I suspect those are Gearwrench made? Any markings for MFG codes?
These wrenches are made by western forge. They were sold in the mid 2000's. Their mechanism isnt as smooth as gear wrench. These can be highly collectible. If you have the socket adaptors that go in the end of the ratcheting box end, they are selling for around $200 on ebay.

There is damage but there is a lot of bare metal parts that need the rust off. same on that Stanley plane, but I suspect that is paint (light blue)

The cutter is in the E-rust container, and that is on the USC.

I went to the "digger sale" that Bmw and I were referring to. It was a true digger sale. The house was MCM and it was pretty wiped out today. I would have been proud to own this house. Really cool layout with a ton of land. With that being said, the garage was a bit rough. There was alot of junk/trash/ rodent excrement inside and the lean to behind the garage hadn't faired well. The roof had leaked and there was alot of ruined things from the rain ( who knew it rains here in Portland ? ). In the left behind category- there was a really cool vintage "coldspot" fridge in the basement that was working and would have cleaned up well . But alas, I couldn't get it out and today was the last day of the sale. The ES company said I could have it for free and it took everything inside me to walk away but I did. I really wanted that fridge.

But on an upnote, I and my wife and son got the following items for free!

-I scored some cool old auto/marine/machinery tins, boxes
-brands present are echlin, auto light, Even scored an allis chalmers belt in the original packaging

-cool old lufkin cloth tape measure
-bunch of really old spark plugs-vintage brands like firestone, champion, ac and others I haven't even heard of
- 2 vintage produce wood crates
-pieces of what I believe are craftsman varislow drill press parts ?
-Also my wife scored this cool old table ( in the basement near the fridge)

All in

Have actually been out to some sales lately, it'll take a while for me to sort through everything but here are a few of the things I still have laying around in the dining room:ROFLMAO:

This was an interesting sale, the pics had bins full of tools but when I pulled up it was a gated apartment/townhouse complex. I wasn't feeling too optimistic until I got into the garage and saw a bunch of bins full of wrenches and sockets. Initially I was looking at some of the larger wrenches and the gals running the sale said everything in that bin was $5-$10ea so I almost turned around and left. But then they pointed at another bin and said "as much of this as you can fit in a gallon ziplock you can have for $25". So I got to work! I was amazed at how much I got in there and they didn't give me any flak about the ends of the wrenches sticking out of the bag:LOL:

Armaloy combos:

IMG_4705.jpg

Armaloy long pattern combos:

IMG_4706.jpg

Herbrand, Craftsman, Armstrong 3/8" ratchets, rest of it is pretty run of the mill although I'm a fan of the Indestro DBEs
IMG_4707.jpg

Craftsman =v= combos
IMG_4708.jpg

The rest of the haul...top is VV, bottom is VA, bottom left is metric. I did have to pay an extra $4 for the mini anvil!

That gas can reminds me of the fuel cans for old kerosene fueled cook stoves, commonly used by the Amish around here. Is there a spring valve in the cap that would open if the can were inverted into a receptacle, such as the fuel inlet on the kerosene stove? Most of the kerosene reservoirs for those stoves were glass or round, however.

Looking at the plane, I would use Sandflex blocks on the cheeks, as needed. The Sole would get a quick check for flat, and then use my Scary Sharp system to flatten and derust in one step. What little japanning I see looks ok, but can't get a good view of the tail.

As a blue plane, it's very late, and it is a lower grade of plane, minimal adjustments, no mouth adjuster, but I think it is still japanned. Think 1960s vintage 110.
