Outlawmws, that blue mat looks like an exercise mat, I use them for working under cars instead of creepers.

Cool family outing, Lugz;
Thanks.
...that Typography book looks interesting, too.
If anyone was going to comment on any of the ones I left comment-less, I figured it would be you! Very happy to find it. It is informative, in an entertaining way, but like a work of art itself. Small press. 1964. (I had to slip that one out of my bag before we all shared our finds, because I plan to give it to DD2, a design and merchandising student.)

The last of it; This cool old book:

E1a Book 1.jpg

Sounds ominous:

Cummins was a member of the James, Younger gang:

E1a Book 3.jpg

Book published in 1903, adn an Attestation that he's the "real" Jim Cummins:

E1a Book 4.jpg

All in all, I'm happy with the days haul even with only the ax and O'scope as tools (Well it could be argued a lot of the rest are cooking tools)

@Private Lugnutz - we attend 2 local AAUW Sales in our area. They are a great organization to support. I am slowly filling my bookcases with my new and old favorite authors.

Today we hit a few ES targets and I picked up a Parker retractable ballpoint pend for $3.00.

Later in the day we were working the last weekend of "Curbside shopping" and stopped at a GS in my hometown. The sale was being run by the 2 daughters of a Mechanical Engineer who had passed recently. He had a ton of drafting equipment, cameras and other cool stuff. I was chatting with them and they showed me Dad's 2 "Not for Sale" machinist chests in his basement shop, wooden National chests - both chick full of quality tools.

I picked up 2 Esterbrook fountain pens, a Starrett ruler in a leather pocket protector and 2 Starrett note pads. I got a really good price on these items, I think because I was so interested in all the cool stuff Dad had left behind.

Cheers

Jim

I went to the Branch 15 swap meet in Brooks, .
hey wow, following on a theme, I met up with @bmwrd0 at the same swap meet, on Saturday. Arrived about 7, started at the back, and made it to the front by 10, when I had to run to make my next event.

It was nice to put a face to a name, and enjoy a different set of eyes and perspective on why they grab certain things. The vendors themselves were all a pleasure to deal with, unlike some at our regular flea.

Lots of small items, from many different vendors, mostly in the $1-5 range. The big purchase was the 18” firm joint Lufkin caliper, a Starrett whatzit, and a German made PH type screwdriver, from a guy who is the face of the PNTC organization, and hosts many club events at his place. I’ve tried to coordinate work and pleasure trips to hit one of their swap meets. Eventually.

The biggest left behind was a guy had a bunch of Teeny Tiny bicycle wrenches in very nice shape, but with the appropriate price tag. Forgot to take pix.

The X-Acto box is a bit newer, the Starrett bar to the right of it has a broken off thin piece of metal, too thin to be a lathe tool, so Whatzit #1. The next thing under the box is a Plomb stud remover, looks like the two wedges are in it, the next thing looks like a piloted counterbore, a Thorsen 3/8 ratchet, 9/16” Indestro auto wrench, a recessable bench planing stop up to, the German made PH driver, and some thing that looks like it clamps down on something drill bit like, and then brings an edge to it. Two whatzits, yeah.

PXL_20230624_180302488-X3.jpg

The smalls were $5/ bag, so I grabbed 1-1/2 mortise bits, a Craftsman ratcheting right angle driver, flat head and Phillips, 3 brace screwdrivers and a countersink, unmarked and Pexto chisels, felt wheel holder, and a Proto stubby.

RTM, that "counterbore" tool looks just like one that was used to put retainer grooves on valve guides for stem seals. Does it have any markings?

Last two carboot sales I was at (monthly here) I picked nothing at all, this one I got stuff but not much.
Club hammer head is in perfect condition, 2kg so a decent 'lump'
Maples and sons counter sink, Lucas Elliott round nose pliers, and a ridgel seem roller.
Not much, but I'm happy to have found anything this month!

I am surprised Provincial left anything for the next day, but when I heard RTM was in the area l shot off a quick message that an event that he would find interesting was taking place. And, as he said, we had a fine time searching and pointing out to each other.

I would post pictures, but after making a couple stops on the way home, the wife and I headed to the coast. So, look for those tomorrow.

Esterbrooks are great work pens. Interesting nibs, or just normals?
I'm not a huge fountain pen guy but they appear to be "normals".
Many years ago I used 3 Levenger fountain pens at work, so I could take notes during meetings in 3 colors. The 10 year old boy never left me apparantly.

Good variety haul (Lugz 2023_22) this morning.

2023_22.jpg

- The handle on that red leather-clad fiber box with the twist-toggle clasp is brass. No idea what I am going to do with but couldn't resist.

- Genyoowine "U.S.N." marked pith helmet with a WWII contract

- Wrenches include PLVMB DBE & DOE, wartime Billings M-1723A DOE, Bonney CV and Bonney TuHex DBEs.

- The knife is a VALOR Black Cat, an older vintage Made in Japan copy of the famous Mercator Black Cat K55K (which I own).

- Big old possibly hand-made turnscrew with brass ferrule and pin

- Bridgeport BELL SYSTEM cabinet screwdriver

Oh, and I am quite literally "keeping something under my hat" in that photo. It is not an amphibian. And I did not find this one at the flea market, but in the middle of the road on my way home. Which means it's time for another round of....

Some big estate mechanic type tool sales around recently but judging by the sale photo's and not to mention in person attendance the most used common tools looked to have picked out before the sale was advertised. Folks end up looking to get rid of big tools, specialty stuff, foreign junk, mishmash of stuff so minimal luck recently. Thus minimal pick-ups

A Few MAC stubby drivers, Craftsmans Pro 10mm wrench, Thomas & Betts wire strippers, well at least only $1 each - lol

I went to a sale last year that looked really good; two three car garages, the regular two car, basement, etc. Apparently the night before the sale, the executor let some family members in to get some "personal items". Well, they grabbed all the tools and high resale items. The estate sales guy was PISSED. He had spent a lot of time preparing and was also losing out on a decent percentage from the sales.

It sounded like lawsuits were going to be flying around, as other family members were losing monies willed to them, the estate sales guy had his contract broken, and so on.

These things are complicated.

I have not looked close enough yet to see. A quick glance during the sale didn’t reveal any. But a quick google search makes you seem correct.
RTM, your Whatzit #1 appears to be part of a No. 65 Center Tester.
Again, correct. The piece broken off seemed a touch heavier than beer can, which surprised me for that usage. I don’t recall if I have a complete one at home, several pieces of Starrett measuring stuff waiting to be IDd.

Will look at these both closer when I get home, but I think you are correct on both counts, thanks.

Outlaw ***** for that axe, and doubly so if it's a Norlund!

Hit a few sales yesterday and blanked on the first three. The 4th turned out to be pretty good though, they had a big tool box listed for a couple hundred bucks and I figured they wouldn't let me pick through it. After talking to the guy though he was really mellow and didn't really care what I picked out. The prices were also quite reasonable, I paid $25 for everything and probably could have low balled even more but I didn't really feel that was appropriate given how nice these folks were.

Another little clamp vise, this one is pretty rusty but the label is in great shape. Any recommendations on how to de-rust from you vise restoration experts? Normally I'd just dunk it in Evaporust but I'm pretty sure that will destroy the label.
IMG_4727.jpg

Cool little Ward Master cabinet, has a few drill bits and taps in it.
IMG_4726.jpg

Probably my favorite pick from this sale, I've never seen one of these Buckeye DBEs before and this set has all the sizes from 1-5/8. Need to do some research on these as I have no idea who made them.
IMG_4728.jpg

And the random stuff I picked out of the tool box and off the wrench wall. The bottom DOE is a Plomb 3020, also stoked about the little P&C 2114 DBE.

Here's a few more things from a sale a couple weeks ago. The guy that passed was a logger and he was pretty hard on his stuff. The socket set boxes are absolutely trashed. There were a lot of nice axes and woodworking tools as well but they were asking ebay prices for most of that stuff so I just stuck with the mechanics tools as those were more reasonably priced.

Bunch of random wrenches, I can't remember how much I paid for these but pretty sure it was between $5-10. I don't see many VlChek sockets/ratchets/extensions so that one stands out to me a bit. The rest of it is pretty run of the mill.
IMG_4730.jpg

Partial Williams socket set that I picked up for the ratchets. Think it was $4.
IMG_4731.jpg

Partial Blackhawk set, the ratchet is a Wizard and some of the smaller sockets are random brands. Hoping I have the stuff to fill this out, I believe this one was $6.
IMG_4732.jpg

And finally I couldn't leave a flying lady box behind for $3. No idea what this originally held as I haven't looked it up yet.
IMG_4733.jpg

It had a few random bits in it, the extractor set is interesting but sadly incomplete.

Found these Lightening Pliers today. I've never heard of Hjorth Tool Corporation before. Couldn't pass up the $5 price tag on these odd pliers. These are 12" long & are very heavy. Has a screwdriver & a nail puller on the end of the handles.
Odd is always cool. And the time to buy them is when you see them. The old I'll buy it if it's there next time doesn't always. Least not for me l
