I had a pretty great week with goodwill tool finds. Found a DeWalt dwe357 compact reciprocating saw with some giant masonry blades for $20, skill spt77wm saw for $30 that looks basically brand new and even had it's blade wrench with it, Ryobi r160 router for $20 with a case and all of it's parts including the chuck wrench, and a Craftsman 4-drawer tool box with some tools in it for $40. The tools in the box are some lufkin and a Mitutoyo micrometers, bunch of junk wrenches, some old made in usa craftsman sockets, a rusted set of channel lock 420's, and some other bits and bobs.

Goodwill???? I don't think I've ever seen tools at Goodwill. I'm sure a lot of tools get donated but around here the stores all look the same and it's extremely rare to ever see a tool or any "guy" stuff. I've always wondered what Goodwill does with tools that get donated?

Hot, hot, hot, yesterday, so I only had a little time before I needed to get my little dog out and to the dog park, but I managaed two stops with tools.
53045645702_75eced815a_b.jpg
The first stop advertised old tools, and she certainly had them. And she had no idea of the actual value, instead relied on what someone tolder they were worth, which turned out to be somewhere around the cost of my first grandchild. In the end, I picked up a quite nice Stanley #4c type 14, and I might go back today. The other sale was day two of an estate sale, and half price day. Picked up taps, a set of numbered bits, Lufkin auto punch, and the nice little bread tin they came in. All told, $27 between both stops.

Here's that Whatzit. Upon further and closer inspection, clearly neither a stud puller or a knock-type wheel puller or anything like that, as I already said later yesterday. Didn't notice a yellow composite piece at the bottom. Didn't notice it freely spins, either. Those two recessed bars on either side of the one open end activate when compressed must grab something. Appears to be some kind of fitting for some kind of industrial application I know nothing about. Air? Fluids? Cabling? I grabbed it compulsively thingamajiggly curious, but at this point, even my initial curiosity has expired and we already spent more time talking about it than it's worth, although I am sure it has some common use that someone here will undoubtedly recognize.

It looks like an air or fluid quick disconnect?

Based on the book press behind it, I think it’s an old school small scale printing thingie. or a tortilla maker. 😉

I’ve seen both before, and leaning towards the former. Here is a pic from the Basel paper mill, label Joseph Mass, Zurich & Geneva.

From someone in the know: some goodwill volunteers take the tools before they hit the shelf.

Other systems consolidate the tools at one store, when I asked why this store didn’t have any.

I’ve donated tools in the past to my local store, and they never showed up on the floor, so stopped that based on my first reply. I met a former back room volunteer while outside the store.

Small printing press for lead type, or wood blocks. And a book press behind it. You still see these printing presses occasionally, and the trays for the type get sold as decorations. But the lead type and the frames with wedges to hold the type, seem to be much rarer.

Helped a friend finish a small wiring job today, he tells me I left a couple pairs of pliers at his house a few months ago. I had picked these up at a garage sale and forgotten all about them.

I figured seeing a bear on the way to this morning’s Tahoe estate sale was a good sign. I saw a Craftsman roller in the Craigslist ad that I was interested in and was able to grab it. Another early shopper got the matching top box so we helped each other load them in our cars. I also picked up a few other tools. The combos on the left are Craftsman metric plus a variety of other wrenches.

Nothing was looking great this weekend but spied a poorly advertised sale today mentioning Rigid and Williams tools. First and only one there first thing this morning. Sale ended up being basically a small family run estate sale of hand tools from a gentleman who had worked at the local Dupont plant. Picked up a bunch of NOS JH Williams adjustable wrenches and passed on a bunch of Rigid pipe wrenches and William's SAE socket sets. Family had no idea why he had so many NOS/unused tools from I'm assuming his days at the plant.

You guys are scoring!

Lugz, why was the shaver a left behind? Those are great for finish work..

Less than stellar day for me considering. the HS Flea I like so well was closed today (long drive for nothing) I even did some "Due Diligence" and checked their website and such, but apparently the school resealed the lot so it was unavailable. The only good was I hit a TOO that had a Nikon rangefinder and I got that for $5.

I came back home to 2 estate sales and a usually huge (33rd) annual "block sale" of 20+ streets, less than half the streets even had one sale, a fer a couple, so pretty slow there. One estate sale had a good little score of a No. 3 skillet, and the other was the one I hit multiple times last weekend (they are STILL hauling things out) This AM I watched him bring out several Fox skins and a couple Coyote skins; one setup to sue as a "decoy". but nothing new out I wanted.

The Nikon Rangefinder -Good reviews on this one, but no longer available new:

Rangefinder Nikon.jpg

From the Estate sale, The No.3 skillet (still need to ID it) a glass box, mirrored bottom (oldest daughter loves these), and a sewing accessories box (empty) I can use. $1 for all three.

ES- no. 3 Skillet, Glass Box, sewing Accessory Box.jpg

The sheath and Big flys were cents 50, each elsewhere at the big block sale.

Bottom marking for the No #3: it has the rim (3 gaps) the big "3" a "Y" and below that 3 vertical hash marks... I think its a 40's Lodge, but not positive.

No. 3 Bottom det.jpg

This was mostly from a Free pile except for the Auto wrench, that was from a yard sale, but in a box full of more modern Craftsman (USA) tools and he said "Just take it!" so I did.

Box of Holo Krome (US made) 3/8 socket head screws, Brass hi pressure hose nozzle, and a brass double clip, 4 brass cab locks 3 new; air hose, bike seat lock - and the free Indestro brand Auto wrench,

Free-3-8 skt hd scrws, Brass H nozzle, doubl clip, 4 cab locks, air hose, bike seak lock - Ind...jpg

And one other stop in the Block sale, a Montgomery Wards HackSaw, ( believe just before WWII based on the Amber grips. I was excited as initially I thought this was a Sears Craftsman. The amber grips stuff from just before the war are highly sought after. I suspect the same Mfg supplied both Sears and MW

MW Hacksaw.jpg

Same place and for the same $4 this early 50's book:

DB Book.jpg

Later I went back out for a sale that started at 11 AM - all gone and cleaned up before 4? :wtf:

After the good score yesterday, I took the wife for a second visit to the same sale. It’s not that far from my house and I was really looking for the power cord to the ham radio. I didn’t find it but I found a few more things.

Two power strips, a brand new Dell USB mouse, and a Wilson leather football. $2.75 for all.
IMG_0465.jpeg

A vintage Skilsaw and 6 brand new blades for it. Some assorted rulers, square, and level. $13 for all.

IMG_0464.jpeg

About 20 bottles of 2 cycle oil, some assorted motor oils, fuel treatments, etc. Most are new, sealed, a few opened. $7 for all.

IMG_0463.jpeg

Total spent today: $22.75

What is your plan for all those? o_O
Reason I picked up all of them is that I have a family member who owns an old school hardware store so if I see reasonably priced nearly new and NOS stuff I will often pick stuff up and offer it to him or trade him for stuff I need assuming I don't intend to keep it for myself. I know what he is typically looking for or I just make a quick phone call to get a yay or nay.

The morning was nice at the flea until the sun was beaming over. 🥵 I looked like I peed myself In no time.
There weren’t many vendors but tons of tools there today.

One guy had a stash of Powrkraft inckuding some 1/2” in the carry box, but the condition was less than desirable. Another guy had a Powrkraft 3/4 socket set, price was fair, but I held off. Already bought too much. Kind of an interesting haul though.

-PowrKraft box wrenches, 1/4 breaker with 2 cross bars, and punch & chisel set.
-Snap-On 7/8 combo and chisel
-Lufkin tape
-two small unknown metal boxes
-Buchanan crimper
-Craftsman adjustable wrench body with name ground off
-4” Kal wrench for the collection
-Lindstrom Swedish small nippers
-Bernard pliers
-Duro 3/8 ratchet
-King **** doe
-Cadillac doe
-JP Danielson adjustable
-Gerber USA pocket knife
-Perfect Handle pipe wrench
-Snap On drum plug socket for the odd factor (paid up a bit for it)
-Snap On 1/2” speeder with knurled handle
-Williams speeder with plastic knob. This was an exciting find. In all these years I haven’t run into one.
-Craftsman crown top padlock
-Wood hollow handle multi bit driver. Didn’t get name yet. Has all the bits.
-Germany wood ratcheting driver, no name yet.
-unknown but interesting hacksaw
-Plomb 3/8 t handle and unbranded USA socket I have to research.
-Bemis & Call 8” curved adjustable with pipe jaw. Still has much original paint,
-(cut out photo) 1/4 Ampro and Pittsburgh ratchets because they were cheap.
-Sandvik fillet knife
-JP Danielson Controlled Steel set in the holder with 1 larger wrench.
-large odd weed puller

I have honestly had pretty good luck overall with good will and other thrift stores, but I go every day as they are on my way home from work. I got a central machinery 4x6 metal band saw from there for $70, a couple of columbian 3.5" vises for $10 each, lots of hand tools (odly drywall tools seem to be the most common) but power tools are definitely the rarity, especially newish ones like these. More often then not it is a 30 year old tool that is way over priced.

Definitely a 3-notch Lodge. Think you're probably right about 40s, and from the sounds of this, maybe earlier than later: https://www.castironcollector.com/unmarked.php For those not familiar, a #3 cast iron skillet is about perfect size for 1-2 eggs.

3Bay, nice score on the Monkey Wards Powr-Kraft (Barcalo) wrenches with the scooped box ends even not to mention the chisel set. I don't see Powr-Kraft very often. Looks like they will clean up just fine. (y)

Picked up a good amount of straight-to-ebay tools an an estate sale this weekend. However, here were a couple of keeps for me.

Lectrolite .05 van wrench. Seen these here, but first I've come across.
IMG_6627.jpeg

Various Barcola. Don't come across these often.
IMG_6629.jpeg

242B Coleman lantern. Not too interested in single mantles but it was the last day and going to be trashed. If I can figure out how to ship, I might sell it.

Thanks. I looks like almost everything I touched was rusted in some form.
Can’t believe the Williams wrench score you got there! Sounds like a great sale.
Have you seen the speeder with the red/orange knob before? I’ve owned a bunch with the metal knob and seen many more, but not the plastic knob. It also has the W on the end.
