Local estate sale today. Today was the 3rd day of the sale,it was still very cramped,very full and I spent nearly an hour digging. I may head back tomorrow and see what else can be unearthed.

On Friday, my wife called me just before noon, asking me if I would like the afternoon off from puppy duty to go wandering around. Would I ever! I quickly outlined five sales that I would have hit the next day that would still be open in the afternoon. Here are the finds:

The first stop yielded a Schrader knife, odd Wiss snips, and a brass thingy, while at the second stop I found a Plomb long extension and a marine chandlery catalog from the thirties (sails! steam engine parts!). The third stop was a quite messy garage clear out, my favorite, and while there was a lot of tools and such, not too much I was interested in, but I did find an SK hex wrench set, Colombia screw outs in the original box, hex nuts in an unopened box, and a hammer handle. Nothing at the forth stop, but at the last stop, an estate sale I just barely made it to, I found my favorite of the day:

a mission style foot stool, to go with the mission style chair I restored a while back! All told, I spent $20 for the day, and had a great time.

I think you might mean a "Schrade" knife. It appears to be what's known as a split back whittler. If that's the case it'll have three blades and two springs. The springs will be separated by a tapered divider. The small blades are both on the same end and will each be on its own spring. The main blade on the other end will be riding on both springs where they taper together.

A very collectable knife and a pattern you seldom see today. I'd love to see more pics.

MrsLS and I joined my dad for a trip up the east side of Cayuga Lake for the NY90 50-mile yard sale. Rain in the forecast held off till after noon, which we braved afoot till most sellers had tarped over their merch. Came away with a handful of drivers, a WF21 3/8dr Plomb rat, a couple early 1870s split-nut Disston saws, Crown kit wrenches, a “US” 3lb rim hammer, a heavy aluminum cookie sheet, and two Diawa 6-1/2’ spinning rods. Pretty much everything is soaken wet and rusting till I get to it tomorrow.
MrsLS focused on mugs, and gifted me one featuring pipe wrenches and nuts.
We crossed over the north end of the lake and lunched at Parker’s Grille in Seneca Falls, then headed PA-ward down the east side of Seneca Lake, passing through my sister’s previous haunts when she worked at Cornell.

Dragged the kids to a few sales this morning and figured I'd get blanked as I had to stay close to home and none of the sales looked particularly interesting. Was happy to pick up this SK set at the last sale, another guy actually had picked it up and I was trying not to hover hoping he'd put it down. Happily he did and I grabbed it. Paid more than I would have liked as they had it marked at $30 and the guy running the sale was not willing to negotiate at all. Still, I can't remember the last time I found a 1/4 inch set this nice. I'll have to do a little looking to see if this 1/2" 1/4" combo was original. Sure seems like it as the only thing that appears to be missing are the 1/2 dr 1/2" socket that's replaced by a Williams, and I assume that this probably came with a 1/2" ratchet and an extension or two. Even has the crossbar (although slightly bent)!

My 86 year old dad has been visiting for the last several weeks (in the Texas summer...) and although we've gone to the two or three estate sales that have advertised tools, we've always come up dry. I finally got my foot back in the door with this 25 piece Craftsman 5460 T&D set. I'm not especially big on T&D sets, but the box for this one intrigued me. I thought it was some sort of early composite material but according to the 1949 catalog, it's just pressed wood--and I take that to mean pressed sawdust. The box weighs three pounds empty. Prior to '49 it was only offered in a hardwood case. The 1950 & 51 catalogs are not available on archive.org and the set does not appear in the '52 catalog.





The set is missing a few items:
The Tap Wrench (No. 4067)
Both 1/4" NC & NF taps
The 5/16" NF & 7/16 NC taps, along with the 1/8" NPT tap
The 1/2" NC and the 1/4 NF dies are O.K. Jrs. from Greenfield Tap and Die (G\T/D) and the 1/2" NF die is missing
The red Adjustable Die Stock is missing the cam plate and screws
The screw driver was missing but I loaned the set one that is pretty close to pictures on the internet
The red interior contents label
The set included several extra taps, most from GTD, who I think it's pretty apparent supplied the set to Sears.



The Hex Ell had been used as a paint stirrer so I didn't see the COO (Japan) until after I cleaned it up, but it was only a buck.
The Goodell-Pratt No.199 obstruction driver and the LS Starrett No.72 Feeler Gage were only 50 cents each.

OK day today, Great prices, but not a huge volume:

This one I was there 10 min before opening, and the guy opened his Garage door 8:00 on the dot - could not believe it, (everything was setup in the garage - also a rarity!)

I picked up the 1966 Ames Entrenching tool and asked how much, "$5" OK I fond a tool box with a mixed bag adn picked the 430 Channel Locks, 3 "Pebble" style Barcalo Combos, and the DBE's are lectrolite and Williams, Superwrench $6 total, with the Ames!





$3 for a tiny copper "kettle" made in Denmark and a flattened Coke bittle! (I crack open my Cokes, put them into the fridge and drink them flat, WAY too much carbonation for me these days, so a Flat Coke for a flat Coke drinker! $3 all




A buck for this 1963 book on Custer's last stand:




More books, I have 1940's vintage Hardy boy so why not Nancy drew! c1940 (with sleeve) and 1944; 8" Walden Worcester Adjustable (my first in that brand adn my 200th Crescent style Adjustable) A T50 torx "made in USA, and no mfg marks otherwise? and the Mummy and Sarcophagus, $1 all.




Fake 1885 (Morgan) and 1921 liberty silver dollars, But good enough for decorations on something.




Last stop was a TOO Estate sale - Turquoise Necklace - at that price a no brainer.




I was looking through this box seeing if it even had one gem, and she said $5, - I kept looking as I didn't want it all





but saw enough to make me agree, Then as she's getting change its suddenly $2!

True Temper hammer Japan hammer with the wood handle, but seems to be good quality. the multi driver "carcass" is a SO, Stanley USA next to that Cheap metric DOE, Japan angle nippers with damaged jaws so a candidate for another pair of wide sheet metal tongs, Wire forming pliers, Brand X drivers, the small ignition pliers are TRW, the large pair are Diamalloy. Task force Sheet rock saw at the top, and I believe carpet blades at the bottom.

There was only one sale on Craigslist that mentioned tools and it was close so we checked it out first. Top to bottom,

Found some irrigation items at the next garage sale
We stopped by our favorite hardware store in town only to find out it was going out of business. I grabbed the whole bin that I buy replacement screws from for 1/4” drive ratchets and a couple of cans of bug killers.
I cleaned up some of the tools.
The die grinder works like new.

Picked up this large Imperial flaring tool and 1/4”. Tubing bender for 6 bucks. I’m sure the flaring tool is worth more than the $6 I spent.

I had six stops lined up, heading north in the valley.


The first advertised as a tool sale, and it was. The tools of a former HVAC tech being sold by his daughter and SIL. Not much there of interest to me, but I picked up a folding Z rule, two Snap-on V sockets, and a Park headset Wrench for a couple bucks. At the second stop, not much of interest, except for this vintage machinist chest.

I have no idea who made it, but with cast handles like this, there was no way I was passing it up:

It is still in the back of the truck, but when I figure out where I am going to put it until I clean it up, I will get more pics and measurements. Not sure who made it, as I cannot find any S J and Co listing for machinist chests on the "guide".

The third stop was the estate of a guy whose hobby was horology, or clock making. I picked up the Mitutoyo fish, Armstrong threading tool, MT2 adaptor and this:

an UNImat milling attachment and head affixed to a 1" steel plate, so as to be mostly permanent. I was able to talk them down a bit, but I am pretty chuffed at finding this!

The last three stops, one of which was what caused me to head in the direction that I did, where all busts. Funny, how that is.

First sale for me today in probably 3 weeks. It was just by chance on my route running errands this morning. A family run estate sale with the typical mix of household stuff, furniture, kitchen ware and some tools. Prices were very reasonable. I picked through a very lightweight homeowner type 2 box stack and found a few items. The woman running the sale offered the stack with all the tools inside for $15 which I briefly considered but ultimately settled with these for $5.

Two Hazet ring spanners. Top chromed is 7/8 & 13/16, next is metric 22 & 24.
Gedore double open 16 & 17.
Sheffield made scissors, can't quite make out makers name yet [edit: Kumfi Kut dress makers scissors]
And two sockets, one beside the scissors is really nicely made, but while I think I have seen the logo before I can't recall the name? Next is S+K E22 torx socket, never once needed one of those, but added it to the bundle.

Thanks Don! As I was digging around trying to figure out what was going on I noticed that there was actually a sticker on the side of the case with the number 4237. I believe that's the 1/2 inch set. Pretty sure the 1/4" set is the 4098R as they sold both of these in the same time frame that you reference. The only slightly weird thing is that I couldn't find this particular set/box combo in the catalogs. They did have a combo 1/2" and 1/4" set but it had some other stuff like speeders, ratchets, etc. and it came in a bigger box.

Maybe this was just one of those one off post war combos that didn't make it into the catalogs.

Oh yeah and I didn't see it at first cause it was hidden but the 1/4" set has the cross bar too! Score!

Yes, a Schrade. I am not a knife guy, and was going from memory. But, it is a Schrade Walden USA, and I think the back side of that marked blade says No. 4. Not sure, as I have old mans eyes. I thought one blade was broken off at the tip, but after looking around online, now I am not sure.

In any case, I will probably give it a light cleaning and put it up on eBay, unless you are interested in it.

Yes, a Schrade. I am not a knife guy, and was going from memory. But, it is a Schrade Walden USA, and I think the back side of that marked blade says No. 4. Not sure, as I have old mans eyes. I thought one blade was broken off at the tip, but after looking around online, now I am not sure.

In any case, I will probably give it a light cleaning and put it up on eBay, unless you are interested in it.

The small blade is a coping blade and looks fine. That the typical shape for that kind of blade.

A lot of strikes out this weekend but luckily on Friday on short notice a sale popped up on FB for a sale at noon. Ad said mechanic husband has passed away and she was cleaning out garages with tools. Get there 15 minutes early and she is open so ask her about the older Snap-On stack and another Snap-On top box and whether tools are inside them and if so are they for sale separately? She said they are off limits and she has their Snap-On guy coming by later to give her a price for buying the boxes and tools. She indicated the Snap-On guy was a personal friend of theirs. She seemed up on the Snap-On tools which I was actually glad to hear so she didn't get taken advantage of since I'm not one of those guys.

Anyways a whole lot of other tools to look at and some Snap-On, Matco & Mac straggler stuff throw all about so was able to snag some quality stuff at least at very good prices.
