great finds!
Yesterday I went to an antique store and got some nice keys for the collection.
Today I hit up one "fancy" estate sale on my street, for 2 bucks I got a mug for my dad that says "My lawyer can beat up your lawyer" and an Insinkerator cord kit
Jeff you **** for those railroad keys. Railroads guard those things like gold. Railroad collectors pay big bucks for them.

How about side of the road in a box for free? Quick clean and paint on the Palmgren and cleaned up the Heinrich. My buddy's actually. *******!

Got a freebie today. One of the guys that comes in every once in awhile just to talk and try selling me something gave me an axe.

Had quite a bit of surface rust and a bit of pitting but I cleaned it up best I could along with an Estwing 14A I had(to test a new cleaning method before going all in). Cleaned the edge up too so it's just waiting for some linseed oil(currently soaked in rust preventative) now.

Seems like a decent axe.

108 again today.
very few sales, but did find an el-cheapo home safe w/o combination for $5.
should receive combination from mfr in a week or two.

as with a toilet that won't stop running - just jiggle the handle a bit...
figured the numbers and then got it close enough to open.

and... the combination (yellow post-it) did arrive a bit later in my email...

last two pics are of the moslers picked up over past few years, plus a few more in a storage unit already opened.
brother #2 is the real pro with these.
as with rollaround toolboxes and vintage stereo gear - there's a bit of an addiction...

Nice axe, and cant argue with the price!

I'm continuing to enjoy seeing everyone's good finds, so here is another quick contribution of my own. Things have been a bit slow for me the past two weeks with a lot more misses than hits. Garage sales, while plentiful, have all been duds, for both tools and anything else I may be looking for.

547226170ac8c6491f5f4c78464806c402981985-1.jpg

Goodies from the last two weeks...

Induestro 36mm socket. Did not have a 36mm, so picked this one up from a goodwill with the Proto DOE wrench for $3. Bit beat up but should do the trick.

Pair of MAC SAE 3/8 drive sockets. Got them in a bag of mostly junk sockets at a goodwill along with a Matco socket that was sold. Rest of them went in the junk box "to deal with" box.

Pair of Cman 1/4 drive sockets. Dont remember what I paid, but were super cheap, and went in the sack of 1/4 sockets I hope to one day make some matching sets out of.

Pair of Duralast E-Torx sockets. I'm lacking a lot of E-Torx sizes so for $1 for these two an the Cman ignition wrench (below) figured they would at least fill some gaps.

Newer style SK 3/8 combo wrench. $1 at a restore. I'm working on a shadow box display of American made 3/8 wrenches and may use this one in it...

Cornwell 10mm Combo Wrench. Was stoked to find this one at a different ReStore visit for $2. I'm actually pretty stoked on this one as its one that I can actually use. I've had decent luck finding used Cornwell tools the last few months, though this is the first metric one.

Proto DOE wrench. From the same goodwill as the Industro 36mm socket. Am slowly putting together some SAE proto wrench sets. Not sure why honestly as I dont really need them. They also had a few Industro wrenches there, but dont need to start more SAE collections.

Craftsman V coded ignition wrench. $1 with the two E-Torx sockets. Slowly putting together a set of these for electronics work. Not sure if this was a size I needed or not, but the price was right.

Wednesday morning at Leesport flea market to try out my new wheels (2-wheel shopping cart I got this weekend at a meighbor’s garage sale for $2). $25 brought home a Bishop-branded Disston handsaw, two VacuumGrip pliers, Bonney, Plomb, New Britain and Duro speeders, 1-1/2 Pony pipe clamps, Kraueter DOE, Mossberg extension, Alligator wrench, 2 Bonney wrenches, 2 Stanley screwdrivers, New Britain 1/4dr spinner and stamped steel kit DOE, two small wheels, turnbuckle, and a pegbord hook.
$.53 at the nearby ReStore got an illustrated bio/commentary on Richard Wagner, and two stops at two different Tractor Supply stores finally put a gallon of EvapoRust in my possession for $28.

a Bishop-branded Disston handsaw,
what do you mean by this? Was it the Geo Bishop Co restamped by Disston after the buyout, or what exactly?

Should be a great old saw either way?

I’ve only got a handle and nuts from them that I know of.

Went to a joke of an estate sale this morning. It's been weeks since I've seen anything advertised that held any interest for me--and this one was borderline... The ad emphasized this was a "cash only" sale and mentioned at least six time in all caps that CAMERAS ARE IN USE.
The short story is that everyone in the garage was holding up ridiculously priced garbage for everyone to laugh at or shake their heads in stunned disbelief.
Typical prices included a run-of-the-mill air nozzle for $18.50;
A Chinese 3/8 ratchet whose drive head had very intimate knowledge of a grinding wheel for $14;
A 1/2 copper tee for $3--that's just one tee!
Finally, a 14" perfect handle screw driver for $40.

At least I know why they advised everyone that CAMERAS ARE IN USE--they knew no one would actually BUY anything at those prices!

Early bird gets the good ****! My $5 score this morning. 2 snap on ratchets snap on sockets and a craftsman 3/8 flex head. The guy had a ton of stuff. I dug through 2 buckets and a box of sockets looking for the missing ones. No luck. IMG_4670.jpegIMG_4669.jpegIMG_4668.jpeg

You ****!

Bucket 4 - not bad for $40 all in.

No kidding. You **** too!

Today’s restore finds. Was definitely tempted by the Kennedy boxes!
I'm surprised they're still there. I saw them Tuesday when I was there, figured they'd be gone by now. You **** for that mini ball peen hammer! I picked up one from the ReStore a long time ago and have been looking out for another ever since. :ROFLMAO:

I’ve seen the CS-19 sell up to $50 on fleabay, I paid $20 for one with some stuff in it, and I also got one for free. The CS-16’s seem a little less desirable, I don’t have one but my dad does.

sale "operator" in our area has same issue. when once asked how she arrived at pricing, she rather stiffly replied "straight off ebay." many shoppers - self included - turn and leave as soon as they see her at the checkout. she's been fired more than once for failing to liquidate due to pricing.

My best find a Marketplace so far. A complete set of Bluepoint 1/4 and 3/8 short in deep socket for $90. It looks to be a service set that snap on sales but the top half of the case it is missing. still I thought $90 is pretty sweet.IMG_2287.jpeg
113 sockets for 90 bux!!? YOU SUX!!

Geo Bishop Co restamped by Disston after the buyout
By “Bishop-branded” I meant Geo H Bishop & Co Cincinnati O used as a brand, but apparently Bishop was still independent of Disston? From Glover’s patent date on the medalion, I’d date it 1888-1896. IMG_0069.jpeg
This “No.8” is a D8 clone in every detail - skewback, radiused let-in to plain covertop apple handle. IMG_0068.jpeg
When did the buyout take place?

Looking in my 1999 version of Handsaw Makers of North America, it says Bishop was active in Cincinnati from 1882-99, then shows them in Lawrenceberg IN until 1920. They have an ad for them from 1914. The ad shows a #8, which from its little 1.5” long view looks like yours. BTW, a Disston of the era you claim would be a #8, not a D8, those started in 1918

Could be there is more newer information unearthed since then.

There is a list of 1906 era saws, about 80ish, by number and brief description. 8 is a hand skew back, for $22.5/doz

(IMO, It was not uncommon to see look alike saws, down to stealing the numbering. Other forum’s members seem to share that opinion.

This implies a 1920 buyout, but I’ve found nothing concrete. Other forums complain about the dearth of info as well.

I actually thought you had a dual marked, which would have surprised me.

Thank you for the info, RTM.
As for 1918 as the beginning of the D8, Disstonian Institute gives 1880 as the year the D8 was developed from the No80 Choice (1874 patent) with an improved handle. (Where is that patent? IMO, the radius inset is a leap forward for production.) The 1918 catalog shows both D8 (p133) and No8 (p135), describing the D8: “This is the original skewback saw…originated and patented by HENRY DISSTON in 1874,” implying it has been immitated for some time.

I have one of them small ball peen hammers but it doesn’t have the knurled part, if you have the means to make a new handle for it, I’m not partial to it.
IMG_1974.jpeg
Those little steel hammers are usually referred to as machinist hammers (at least down here in Tejas) they are almost always shop made, because they are a good end of course project to assign a student at the end of his intro to the lathe class, are marginally useful, and the materials are easy to scrounge from most cut off bins or drop boxes. The construction gives the instructor a pretty good gauge of a students grasp on basic turning, facing, threading, knurling, and finishing. Almost any machinist you ask can dig one out of the back of their tool box somewhere, usually with a grin and shrug about their perceived mistakes, x years down the road. :)

I tend to pick them up as they are handy for gunsmithing and lutherie, and if you have several, you are less likely to be doing something somewhere and suddenly need one without it being available... YMMV, naturally.

I've always had the same thoughts about them being school shop projects.

Slipped out to an Annual 12 family YS (1 week before an adjacent old section of town has their 2-3 day sale - this guy/family doesn't want to have to compete with that..)

I look forward to both every year!

All smalls from the "dollar table" I got 16 things for $15, exactly half tools half "Stuff" they had a lot of other good stuff., but not stuff I wanted.

Red piece is an ancient and intact mirror, possibly Willys?, old vintage possibly antique, stringer chain, 3 Oar locks, a low flow shower head (I use this type for my "wash Stations" for camping, another Hose nozzle, Corona Extra bottle opener, gas spigot, and the lockog latch hande has a bit of a story, I found the handle,, then later found the keys. and said "Hmm will it fit? What are the odds! it did! I was shocked!

aMirror Stringer Oar locks latch opener Hose noz Gas spogot shower head.jpg

Tools: Wire puller a "special" tool no clue what its for, Krauter Wire formers, Unbranded Pruning Scissors, (Bonsai I think) a beat Plvmb WF DOE, (bent and straightened several times) New Britain 1/4 Drive Breaker, a Diamond scribe, and a flat blade bit for a brace.

Outlw, if you are talking about the small tool to the bottom left of the fish-tape puller, my first thought was that it seemed similar to (but not exactly like) a bike valve stem tool. Possibly broken? The next thought I had was for something like wing-nuts or other flat-bladed adjustments.

The one I have is an Indestro made piece, if I'm remembering right. Very nicely made and has come in handy quite a few times. I don't think I paid more than $5 for it from the ReStore. WELL worth the price IMO. I'm not surprised that they would be a student machinist project, seems like an excellent project.

I may take you up on that. While I don't have a way to make a knurled handle at the moment, I could probably come up with something. Just have to find the time is all. :ROFLMAO:
