Thursday, I slipped out for a sale, with decent finds
53126415609_0c92b2d342_b.jpg
A piece of steel bar, three Blue Point line wrenches, a Plomb line wrench, and a Proto line wrench. Duro type 1/4 breaker, a packet of Snap-on saw blades, and a TRW 4" adjustable. I found that last one on the seat of my truck, and remembered buying it a while back.

Today, I hit a few sales just south of me, including the estate of a diesle mechanic.
53126410324_cf104268bb_b.jpg
The estate sale, while it had a lot of tools, it was mostly cheap junk. I did manage to find a Goodell Pratt spiral screwdriver, a box of screws, rusty WF 8, Craftsman 8-point sockets, a hex t-handle stand, and (in the last photo) a Toyota wrench. One garage sale yielded a Schrade lockback knife, Williams extension and frozen ratcheting adapter, along with a Diamond Horseshoe C-7, which I have no idea what it is for (it's the object at lower right). A final stop at the Restore and I found a turnscrew and a Dremel logo box lid. Not sure if that last one is homemade or not, but I liked it just the same. I was pretty disappointed in the diesel estate sale, as I had been wanting a good sale to sink my teeth into, so to speak, but that one was either too junky, New Craftsman (no interest in) or too much of a project. For instance, there was a Walker Turner belt/disc sander, but it was missing too many parts for me to pay what they were asking, especially as I have too many projects right now, and no space. Oh well, there is always tomorrow!

Looking in my 1999 version of Handsaw Makers of North America, it says Bishop was active in Cincinnati from 1882-99, then shows them in Lawrenceberg IN until 1920. They have an ad for them from 1914.

Could be there is more newer information unearthed since then.

This implies a 1920 buyout, but I’ve found nothing concrete. Other forums complain about the dearth of info as well.

****, bad form replying to my own post, but I missed part of Bishop’s History

In 1920, Bishop joined up with Ohlen to form Ohlen- Bishop, 1920-1938, still in Lawrenceberg, but now with sites in Columbus, Oh and Boston, MA,

So the 1920 buyout implication is obviously pure fallacy, more digging to come.

And a reputable source of old tool info, the proprietor of Sydnassloot.com back in 1999 said: Note that "G. Bishop" was used as a brand name by Disston, but there is no known connection.

Thank you again, for going the extra mile toward a buyout date.
I thought I recalled “G Bishop” as a Disston brand (like “Harvey W Peace”), but the No.1 hand saw on p136 of the 1918 catalog is clearly labeled “C Bishop” - probably a jab at Bishop & Co, but like you say, no known connection.

Here you go. This is the smallest cabinet, they made them in several different sizes if you search for sold Craftsman parts cabinets on Ebay. Most of the ones I find have cracked plastic drawers, paint splatter all over them, or are missing or gouged up Craftsman logos. Wards Master Quality (Montgomery Wards) had an all metal cabinet of same size thats collectible too.

Those little steel hammers are usually referred to as machinist hammers (at least down here in Tejas) they are almost always shop made, because they are a good end of course project to assign a student at the end of his intro to the lathe class, are marginally useful, and the materials are easy to scrounge from most cut off bins or drop boxes. The construction gives the instructor a pretty good gauge of a students grasp on basic turning, facing, threading, knurling, and finishing. Almost any machinist you ask can dig one out of the back of their tool box somewhere, usually with a grin and shrug about their perceived mistakes, x years down the road. :)

I tend to pick them up as they are handy for gunsmithing and lutherie, and if you have several, you are less likely to be doing something somewhere and suddenly need one without it being available... YMMV, naturally.
I have two. One made by my father and one made by myself. They are most useful for cracking nuts. I may have used one for something else over the years but I wouldn't know what for.

Picked up some things at the flea market today. Nothing I really needed, but cool stuff none the less.
Indestro 6272 3/8” ratchet in good shape. Cleaned up the inside and threw some superlube inside and it feels great.
USA made Husky 3/8” 6 point sockets in 13mm, 14mm, 16mm, 17mm, and 19mm.
1/2” KINGCR Japan speed wrench. I don’t have a speed wrench, so I will start using this around the garage some to see how I like using it.
Xcelite 3/8” mini nut driver. This was pretty neat and compact so I had to pick it up.
7/16” Gearwrench ratcheting wrench. Nothing special here, but I don’t have a ratcheting in this size as most of my stuff is metric.

A good day, Spent well above average, and almost 6 hours at it (Long drive for the HS Flea, which was LIVE this month - I emailed last week to confirm they were having it), but it shows!

The Flea Market:

Smaller Kruater Needle nose with slip on grips, $2; $5 for the Fedderal BB's; $5 for Danialson 6" crescent with broached hanger hole, 2 Indestro Combos, Herbrand DOE, Cornwell combo, Early Craftsman "V" series (not sure it's plated?) and a PEXTO rivet set.

BFM1 Krauter fed BB Dan Indest Her Corn CM PEXTO.jpg

The Guy wanted $50 for the Cheny anvil Vise, (Cheny Anvil and Vise Co) but I got him to throw in the Atha/Stanley hammer, and the Marble Match Safe. for the same. 2-1/4" Jaws, I would call this 2" max opening. 8 Lbs, 14 oz.

BFM2 Cheny, Atha stan Marbles.jpg

Coleman #0 Copper funnel $10m $5 from the same guy for the 2 small CI pieces, the Fry pan" is 3"; $0 for the wrenchesm 1 is made for Rambler, the 4 DOEs' are Westline

BFM3 Coleman F, C! westline Rambler.jpg

The Glass shells were $5 each as were the cap guns, the bank Bag was a buck.

Off to YS's the hydrant wrench was a Buck at a TOO near he HS FM. the rest was YS's closer to home, Case ** throwing knofe/Sheath, and sharpenign stone - $2, the soldering Copper #2 Philips and scissors were a buck each at the place I revisited from yesterday.

YS2 3 4 Sissors, PH2 small S CU Hyd rench CAse XX S Stone.jpg

Another YS: 1/4" Craftsman RHFT, Armstrong DOE, Cornewell DBE, Proto Ignition wrench, Coleman Focus 5 heater, and a gallon of fuel for $15. I left a 220J lantern and a 426 B 3 burner stove. 2 is enough and it was a project...

YS1a CM RHFT Armstrong Cornwell Proto.jpg

YS1b Focus 5 CF.jpg

and a TOO Estate sale: for $5 - Mystery BP Hammer, I'm hoping for markings under the rust, Old, mostly skeleton keys, SK 3/8 breaker - No markings but like a large Xacto knife with wood handle, Krauter NN, and a near full box of blades I believe these fit my carpet cutter...

YES1 BP SK Kraute Xacto blades Keys.jpg

And I went back out to a Church FM, Vlchek, Combo, SK extension, Husky metric ball drive, BMW, Billings DOE's and a Tanto style folding Knife. $5 all - I figure that Folding knife is a beater for the rigs so I have a knife I don't care much about.

Those are literally the best locking pliers ever made. I have been looking for a pair for years. Great find!

We decided to make it a Nevada sales day since there were no worthwhile sales listed in Tahoe on Craigslist, plus we could hit Carson City’s Costco and Trader Joe’s. We always fill up with gas while we are there since it is significantly less expensive than gas in the Tahoe basin. The first (and best) sale In Gardnerville featured a lot of long C Craftsman and a few more modern pieces.

IMG_0028.jpeg

We checked out a few more sales in Carson City and picked up a few tools here and there. I overpaid for the Big Mac pry bar but it looked pretty useful. IMG_0044.jpegIMG_0047.jpegIMG_0046.jpegIMG_0032.jpeg
The final Carson City sale had quite a bit of Thorsen at very reasonable prices plus my wife found some china pieces that she collects.IMG_0030.jpeg

I drove all over the place today looking for yardsales with zero luck, then on the way home, when driving through my hometown, there was a yardsale on a back road I had never driven down. I found some pretty neat items.

Crossman Quest 1000X
20230819_132552.jpg
Several step drills. Some unused. Also a pair of Utica forming pliers, Utica precision needle nose pliers, an unused set of Proto screw extractors.
20230819_132536.jpg
A cool old set of Stanley punches, a nut breaker that is just marked "Made in England", an unknown ratchet with unknown swivel, a cool set of Utica "Cannon Plug Pliers" whatever those are..... and some random SK socket bits.
20230819_132526.jpg
Peterson Vise Grip sheet metal pliers, Channellock 414 Nutbuster pliers, and the coolest shears I have ever seen.
20230819_132531.jpg
And finally a set of Blackhawk reversible ratchet wrenches. I didn't realize two had been replaced with Westward until I got them home unfortunately.
20230819_132522.jpg
I paid $85 total for everything shown.

Here is a set of large shears for scale. These tailor's scissors are enormous. I believe they are Heinisch tailor's shears. The guy said he bought them off of a leather worker. From the little research I have done, they are very old and some can be quite valuable.
20230819_132857.jpg
And super thick. These scissors are screaming for their own Tool Polishers post.

Small moving sale yesterday morning advertised tools but I didn't see any. Lady says her husband is in the basement getting them out and sends me inside and downstairs. Bought this as soon as I saw it, didn't argue on price! Guy says he needed to get out some personal stuff and on the walk to the car the lady stops me and asks if her husband removed the love letters from her that he had in there. I told her no, I had to pay extra for those! Although she laughed she wouldn't let me leave until checking with hubby. Box says H. Gerstner & Sons.

Got these for $6 total. I think the Ford wrench is a Burlington railroad? I'll be using all 3 at work tomorrow.

Pulling the bottom drawer and cover should get you to the stencil. The Guide might help you with the date of mfg. Although it looks like your logo is after 1959 https://sites.google.com/site/theguideforwoodmachinistchests/pg-68-gerstner-stencils-year-dates

Here is my haul from yesterday, a reasonable score, from two occasional repeat vendors. Spent the early half of the morning hitting 4 relatively dry holes, people aren’t posting many pix these days, and minimal descriptions.
Based on the high number of tourists in town, we usually try to go all the way one direction, hitting those on our right, then head the other direction, again hitting right, to avoid left turns without stop signs or traffic lights.

The vendor who supplied the majority of the tools was a flea market regular pre Covid, and now has them out his house. Should have gone here first, but didn’t recognize the address. Scored a panel gauge, Plumb hatchet head, 18” pair of dividers compass for use with a piece of soapstone, and a very rusty pair of Starrett 18” outside lock joint transfer calipers. Also grabbed a Stanley H4 Gage plane, very rusty and very cheap, realized when I got it home the nose had been broken off and re welded on. Finally, on my way out, grabbed an old hatchet handle. Most expensive item was the panel gauge.

Last stop yielded a pair of Polk atrium speakers, and the metal frame fastener organizer, bought for the drawer full of big brass wood screws. Real close to the house, they recognized us for our dogs.

The first stop that yielded anything, furthest from home because I had to grab something from a store that direction first, yielded the portable fire pit, half a tank of propane, and a drip irrigation tubing cutter. Fired up after a few minutes, then continued to burn after I turned it off, apparently someone had barbecued on it, and the grease needed to burn off the stones.

Nothing fount here today, stopped by 2 local. maybe a late opener later?

I think the Ford wrench is a Burlington railroad? I'll be using all 3 at work tomorrow.
Auto wrench, not Ford, (needs a Ford script and that's a Diamond) But where are the RR markigs?

Curious what the Auto wrench will be used for. I have one as a specail use for lantern/stove repoair, but rarely sue them for general use.

An old wooden hand grenade carrying case for $5.

I like that, especially for a fiver -How big inside? That looks big enough to use a as lantern case for a coupel of lanterns stood on end.

NOS Baldor 1 Hp, 1 Phase Industrial motor for $25.

Definite suckage for that.

I’m very interested in what the main nut looks like inside that Cheney, if you have an inclination to open it up. I have a 4” one that someone replaced the main screw and filed the nut (probably also a replacement) so I’m not sure what it’s supposed to look like or how it is supposed to fit. The existing nut pops out of position under pressure.IMG_0087.jpeg
