Would it be poor form to use alcohol to remove the price tags,
I’ve had good luck with wd40 removing permanent marker, but nail polish remover or straight acetone probably wouldn’t hurt them.

Alcohol is my Go-To for marker removal. it is the solvent used in MM and I also use it to rejuvenate old markers that are drying out. It usually works on even semi-porous things like plastic containers. Unfinished wood, it will fade the markings but rarely gets it out, but niether will sanding unless draconian

a micrometer diopter rear sight for my vintage diana 45 air rifle
Nice find!

Kirk, those Adjust-a-volts, or VARIACs as I know them, are great for working on older AC equipent, where too high a voltage, like 120vac, can blow delicate wiring.
We use them in the display shops to build heating elements to bend acrylic sheets. They allow us to dial in the heat across (nickel?) plated wire.

Grabbed this old Motor Service magazine from March of 1948 for $5 and this old Domestic ******** (interesting company name😂) sewing machine for $10. From a quick search it's from the early 1900's. The magazine has a lot of nice ads and articles about the latest tools and equipment from 1948.

A small find this week. Oddball ball pein hammer for $2. Starrett #20 square - $8. Toy cannon $10. Apparently the cannon is functional using some kind of concoction of water and magnesium with a flint style ignition.
P1100877.jpg

That's a Big Bang cannon that uses calcium carbide mixed with water to produce acetylene gas to make the boom with a Zippo flint sparker. Same chemical process used in old miner's head lamps -- minus the explosion.
Had one when I was a kid. We also used on old paint can -- punch a hole in the bottom, add water and carbide, stomp the lid on and touch her off with a match. Great fun on the Fourth of July!

Michigan And Florida too!
Thrifting has been really slow for me but I got out today.

IMG20230826130812.jpg

A garage door hinge and partial roll of paper. 1 buck.

IMG20230826130505.jpg

Metal Arko-Mils parts bin. Three trays are kinda broke. 10 bucks.

It's a 50/50 mix of good and bad stuff; air/gas fittings, anchors and random fasteners.

My wife actually woke me up and asked if I wanted to go to some yard sales. She never wakes up before me so who am I to say no?

Anyway, I we went to 5 total and only two had anything good.

First one, I picked up an unused Mac Harmonic Balancer Install tool for $5.

Second yard sale was my favorite kind. The messy garage with everything in it for sale.

Total paid $55.

Bosch Hammer drill with several drill bits, a variety of Snap on tools (extensions, line wrench, ratchet wrench, 1/4" drive insulated nut driver, and small flat screwdriver), Walden ratchet, Diamalloy and Channel Lock brand tounge and groove pliers, exhaust cutter, vise grips, Porter Cable pneumatic stapler, Thorsen torx socket set, Channel Lock pliers, Diamalloy adjustable wrench, and a White Tail Cutlery pocket knife.

Estate sale ($45): Power Pup Triple Dog diesel downloader (40500) ($175); Bayco trouble light; Sandvik 51 bowsaw blade; Craftsman =v= 44975 1/2" ratchet; J.H. Williams S50 1/2" push through ratchet; Armstrong Armaloy open end wrenches (1033-C 1, 15/16; 1733 1, 7/8; 1034-A 1-1/16, 15/16; 1031 7/8, 25/32); Craftsman =v= 1" combination wrench; 1/2 pint Platte Valley straight corn whiskey; Victor Miller Falls 9C smooth plane corrugated bottom; Victor Jersey No. 776 swivel vise; 2 - 5' x 3' deer hides.

Always happy to see the whiskey... I mean vise :) The diesel downloader is probably VIN locked, but no way to find out. The Miller Falls is kind of neat in that there's screw for adjusting the frog, which I've never seen.

After some household chores and getting ribs into the smoker I was able to get Wednesday's FBM pickup out of the car and into the shop. It was advertised as a "Craftsman tool box",which when I arrived we were dodging a monsoon,an unruly dog, behind a fence and we managed the transaction over the fence gate. The "Craftsman" part bugged me as I saw no obvious logo/badge in a quick look. Thursday after work, before dodging later thunderstorms and tornadoes I got a closer look. turns out that it's a Gerstner O41B,now with the plate missing from the lower drawer I can only estimate based upon "The Guide" a date range of 1942 to 1959. So far it is cleaning up pretty well .Some interesting tool finds, the round TUIT,30 and out button, and the Imperial knife. While cleaning up I found several catalog ads for "Craftsmen's" chest, which is how I believe the seller arrived at the brand/ad header. I'm not sure how clean I am going to get this one,but I will most likely stop long before a full on refinish as I never seem to complete them.My Union B-20 still un-assembled will attest to that.

OK the kick off day (yardsales only) for the "Antique Fair" tomorrow on Sunday wasn't bad! Quite a few tools and other goodies. I walked 5 miles all told, and drove even more:

First score was the Channellock dykes for $2, then I think the lantern below and at the same place the can opener, (needs cleaned for brand) and the "Sky-Line" peeler w/Julienne slicer cutter, which was made in England, After that it gets muddy which came with what, but - Williams Hook Spanner, Proto, Pratt & Whitney Aircraft PWA 2400 obstruction wrench, Hand drill ($10 on that one) a "Strike out" Plvmb (XXXX) A PH 1, - may have markings, Boker Duckbill pliers, and SO sockets, Mostly a buck or less each.

N1 CL Kit, Prots Will H drill Plvb ** PH1 Boker SO.jpg

The lantern is a Coleman QuickLite, (I think its a Jan of 1927 L-427 or 220) and other than it has very old RUG in it with a god-awful smell , in very good shape! $30
:

Bronze Oarlock, Shucker, 2 wooden boats, and a backwards? US Flag Patch: Still doing a buck each:

N3 Boats Br Oarlock, shucker, Flag.jpg

2 dozen NOS Vintage Flashbulbs, for $5, and the same for the display box of flies:

A buck total for the 3 drivers and Chisel grip, Less than a buck each for Proto Drift punches, 2 drivers, 2 P&C combos, and the Keencut specialty scissors, I think these are for trimming flat lantern wicks.

N5 Proto drivers P&C Kleencut.jpg

A small aluminum square ($2), Stiletto (blue) and Firestone Deluxe hatchets -$3 Each.

N6 Square, Stiletto Firestone.jpg

Another 40's Lodge, #3, 6" Skillet (3 recently... I think I have another in Camping?) 2 rings for the ladies, ($5 each), souvenir bell for the Redwood Highway, (Spoon handle?) an Ibbotson Brothers carving knife and unmarked Fork; the fork definitely has a Deer antler handle, $2.50 for both, Butter knife, silver plate at least. cents 50

On the way home I happened across a Frwe TOO - Mostly books Mostly old, mostly about China and the Chinese? I was left with the impression an old Professors book collection?

The book on the left is a Beekeepers book -Originally printed in 1877 - reprint is 1944. I have a number of Yerby's books; this one replaces a paperback, and the "Wild animals" book is from 1927.

YS1a Free Bee keeping, Yerby Wild Animals.jpg

This one is 1901, and the preface is in English, the rest is on German? :dunno:

We were up early this morning and the neighbors joined us for a morning of local Tahoe garage sales. The Craigslist offerings were kind of sparse so we hit a few TOOs. The first listed sale started at 7:30 and I didn’t want to miss a Pennzoil can for my basement display. Fortunately it was still there when we arrived. It was priced at more than I wanted to pay but I was able to negotiate it down by 1/3. IMG_0100.jpeg
I grabbed a Blitz 2-1/2 gallon gas can (20 gauge and made in 1983 for those interested), along with a couple of other items. IMG_0103.jpegIMG_0102.jpeg
Several other TOOs added these to the haul. The level turned out not to be Craftsman even though it was a perfect fit in the case. It’s a Macklanburg-Duncan.IMG_0116.jpegIMG_0117.jpegIMG_0109.jpegIMG_0105.jpeg
The last sale was my fourth and final visit to a fairly productive moving sale. I think the tray is Craftsman and what looks to be a #3 Phillips is actually a Reed & Prince of equivalent size. IMG_0114.jpeg

My haul for the Pacifica City wide garage sale, about 50 sites, 6 or 8 listing tools. Found a few other sites with tools, which was a bonus. One site had two boxes FULL of chisels, many nicely rehandled, a Reed 104 1/2 vise, and a few other fun WW tools, but nothing I needed, and he knew what it was worth.. Wandered thru a few other houses on the cul-de-sac, then moved on to the next few on the list. Moved in a circle, got to a house about 2 blocks away, and he had a box of hardwood by the curb. Homeowner was doing a little woodworking in the driveway, so we chatted about his current project. Offered me a great deal on the two boxes of hardwood, and the veneer next to it, which I couldn’t turn down. Before we walked away, he mentioned a great carver and Turner two blocks away. Said I’d been there already, and couldn’t afford much.

Couple of other fun stops, one was an older woman, who used to do lutherie and other WW stuff, but was now doing indoor metal sculptures. She had started WW stuff in the mid 80s, and had a nice swivel jaw carving vise, and some German made HD F clamps. Quite pleased to get those.

The last fun stop was a repeat seller with some nice antiques, and some nice chatting. He had an approx 1500 page catalog, which being in poor shape, he let go cheap, along with an early Disston rip saw.

The vise, well swiveled.

I hit a garage/estate sale yesterday that looked, from the photos, to be worth my time. Well, not so much, but I did find this cast iron lamp base and box of misc. brass:
53144413705_e7cac01735_b.jpg
Not sure what I will do with it, but I liked it too much to leave it behind.

Today, I went big game hunting. Three or so weeks ago, I had seen an ad on Marketplace for something that would love, but between having to leave town the next day and it being of general desire, I whistfully set thoughts of it aside. Well, last night I was checking to see if there were any sales of interest (and there really weren't) when, lo and behold, that same ad was running, but the price, already a deal, had been dropped a hundred. So, thinking it had sold but they just haden't removed the ad (which has happened to me before) I said "what the heck, you have nothing to lose" and asked if it was still available (by the way, I find it silly when an ad has something to the effect of 'don't ask if it is available, I delet those messages'. I mean, come on. People are just being polite). And, holy smokes, it was! So, we arrainged a time to meet, and off I went this morning.

A Barker PM, bench top horizontal mill. Technically, it is a second operation mill, but for a home shop, it will do what you need. This one is from late 1970, or just before I was born, and is in good condition. Came with collets, the motor is a 3/4hp quick reverse (way over motored, but I will take it) and a coolant pump. Some of the parts aren't original, but that is fixable. And I had a great conversation with the seller, a retired machinist. I do need to find an appropriat size vise for it, and a place to put it in my shop, but I am very happy with this. I got it for less than the price of a milling attachment for my South Bend, and it is much more flexable in use.

Now I just need to patch the holes in my savings account.

It is about 22"x24"x18". The actuating lever has been extended at some point, so I need to look into that to conserve space in my tiny shop, but, yeah, it is quite small. Still 175#s though.

I went down south (into Bmwrd0's territory) to see my ailing grandma. The last of my grandparents alive. She is a 1932 model and her health is failing her. But it was good to see her for about an hour and talk for a bit. I brought my son and wife with me. After about 1 hour she was getting tired and we were getting quite warm from the temperature of her house. So we headed north through the back roads and old highways towards my house over 1 hour away.

We found 1 sale to hit up. It paid off. I found the Record vise for $40 and then I spotted a beat up husky lower roller box. It was beat up and had seen a hard life. I spotted some dual marked plomb/proto wrenches in the roller box. They wanted $125 for it and wouldn't budge on price. They also didnt want to sell any of the tools out of it either. I was able to talk them out of the wrenches since I bought the vise. This is the most dual marked wrenches I have ever found in one place so I was stoked. I already have these sizes but once I clean them up I will see if any of these are nicer than my current ones. While we were out and about we also hit a goodwill and I found these new in box USA made saw horse brackets for $10 so I bought those as well IMG_7127.jpegIMG_7125.jpeg

I wasn't intending on going anywhere, but I saw a Yard Sale coming from the store and decided to stop. I noticed it had plumbing stuff. I told him I was looking for Solder being it's getting expensive. The owner said he just retired as a Plumber. He went into the garage and came back with solder and flux saying I could have it for free. I saw the sockets on the table and asked how much. He said $7.

Top left is non USA SAE sockets.
Top right is non USA Millimeter sockets.
Bottom left is S-K & Craftsman SAE sockets.
Bottom right is S-K & Craftsman Millimeter sockets.
S-K # 40990 1/4 Inch Swivel.

He tried to give me change from the $10 I gave. I told him please.

Went to an estate sale yesterday where they don't give out entry numbers. So I got there early and stood in line for about 90 minutes. I was number 11 in line. They let in 15 to start. Surprisingly, nobody even looked at the knives besides me. I came home with these seven for $90. Three Schrades, three Cases, one Camillus, all older USA made, mostly mint.

Monthly carboot sale was on this morning,

20230827_154854.jpg
And once more from the top...
Double open is saltus 20 & 22, side shown is in good condition, other side not so much, some rust to deal with.
Halfords advanced 15mm combo, decent quality, I wouldn't have bought it on its own, but bundled it in.
Stubby is craftsman 15mm, whether it's -VV- or -W- I don't know, don't see much craftsman this side of the pond.
The two 1/4 drive swivels are also craftsman 10 & 13mm, both GK.
Two grouped 1/4 drive deep are Teng , 6 & 12mm.
3/8 drive Teng 9mm
And lastly a Teng 1/4 drive swivel.
Saw a few stahlwille, a brand I quite like, but SAE, so not stuff I would get use out of really, and I am trying to avoid picking stuff I won't really use much, have plenty of SAE already.
Also saw Blackhawk sockets, first time ever seeing that brand, looked cool, but again SAE sizes, also some of those Blackhawk tee handle wrenches, I was really tempted by those, but no.

Happy with my picks, they can all go straight into the working tool toolbox, and not the 'well I have that because it's cool' toolbox.
Oh, also saw my first koken socket, sadly damaged but they look really interesting, will be looking those up.

Turned out to be Williams, with a real nice non-chrome NM-110 spinner inside.
Nice find.
For those of you who have noted me collecting them over the years, I've always said I was going to use them to build a firewood rack. Well, last weekend, my son and I finally did it
Wonderful!
2 NOS Tuffy screwdrivers, one 1/4" flat blade, one #2 phillips, both 9" long.
Nice find. I have two flat blades, always looking for more.
Double open is saltus 20 & 22
On this side of the pond, this brand is synonymous with the colloquial term for the type of wrench with one open end and one hinged box end, which they first invented and made. No matter who made them, they're always called "saltus wrenches". I can count on one hand examples of other tools from the same maker.

Findings from the last 3 weekends or so. Some good sales and finds but also a lot of strike-outs.

Snap-On alignment? tool, Snap-On brake tool and Snap-On 3/4" T-bar & extension

Snap-On 3/8 drive long extension, some 1/4" Mac stuff, Mac SAE line wrench, Snap-On SAE combo, Vulcan Pliers

Mac SAE nutdrivers, Craftsman 3/8 ratchet, Vulcan extension, Williams electrical combo wrench set.

Bunch of Snap-On 3/8 drive SAE stuff.

Blue-Point USA Tap & Die set, Vulcan flaring set.

Yesterday went to a family run all tool estate sale of a former independent tool sales guy, mostly S-K, Bonney some MAC and a mixture of others. Got there about 1.5 hours after opening and was one of two guys there perusing the goods at that time. I figured they would have mostly full sets of stuff but that was not the case, mostly things sorted and put in plastic Sterlite tubs so much digging required. Dug out the Proto line wrenches which look like NOS, Big Indestro body hammer and a Stream Line? body hammer. And after digging through the bin of ratchets at the bottom I found the Craftsman spinner ratchet, first I have ever seen in the wild in say over 13 years.

Tbh that style is what I knew them for as well, never seen one though, in fact I am fairly sure that's the only saltus I have actually seen.

Alinc100 - Many years ago I got a really dirty Union machinist chest at an auction and posted on a WW forum and received the following advice for cleaning up wood cases.

Mix equal parts : Turpentine, Denatured Alcohol and Boiled linseed oil together into a container. Apply liberally to a small area and scrub with something with some bite/texture - he recommended burlap - I use green scothbrite pads. Wipe off goop and continue.

I have used this mixture several times with success to clean and even out the finishes on wooden machinist chests. You don't get a factory finish but it's pretty nice.

Cheers

Outlaw and S-K Tool Fan--That's a lot of suckage, gentlemen!

You ****, massively, for that lantern. And just about everything else in this post!

Thank you Gents!

Day two, (The actual day of the "Antique Faire" ) A bit slower, bought seconds from a couple of people, passed on a lot of overpriced stuff, Passed on some that was fairly priced, just Higher than I was willing to pay, (two fly poles, one steel, and one bamboo with multiple tips for instance). A mile less walking (I parked once and walked most of it, so I was surprised. I also got 33 vs 22 "Heart points", so I need to rethink my plans for day 1 next year - every year I tell myself use a bike and maybe a trailer...)

Tools: First up was the 7 Plvmb and 1 Long C sockets for $10; Then the US marked Pick head, I was surprised at the markings considering the red paint - maybe repurposed to USFS?; $5. DOE's were P&C adn Proto LA Pebble A buck each; and the Tommy bar, unmarked of course, 8" long, seems sized forth 3/8 hole? Anyone know who's it was? - It was Free "I have no Idea what ti even is!"

Purple Pyrex: these and the Blue Flameware are prized by collectors. I got both got $4.

And post Core ares at a TOO a wood box, adn a Camilus 3 blade pocket knife. the box may go for camp gear, it 11X12X9 and may for something. the Camilus needs cleanup but the edges are surprisingly sharp but done with a pretty rough stone so what I class as a "Savage" edge:

That was it! I did well yesterday, a lot slower today but pretty normal unless someone new pops up as a gold mine, or new stuff is brought out, and I've seen both happen. It's rare for the "Man drag" Sunday sellers to have deals, as they mostly think everything is gold. I can remember going back to a Sunday seller once a few years back for a Prentiss Bulldog, and negotiating, and while no steal, it was a better price. No one wants to reload and haul a 72 lb, item!

We hit an "Antiques" FM this weekend and I found a Stanley # 34 1/4 Ruler to add to my "measurey things" collection. I have to laugh that the hole is drilled off-center . . .
