I’ve never been able to put mine into use either.

Thats a beauty!
I don't think I could carry it loaded anyway. The fellow I bought it from was a retired millwright who had fabricated a wheeled cart (which I didn't buy) to tote it about the plant he worked in. I guess that explains the pristine bottom on the one I scored.

That is mind-boggling. Why does anyone collect those, and why would they by so valuable???

The pic with the PBR can was a nice touch, BTW...

Mike
One of the bidder wanted to know whether if it was a true medium aqua as it looked a little lighter than normal. I sent the pic as a reference and that the original photos were taken with a 5500 Kelvin CFL.

Yah I was also surprised at the size of the glass insulator collector community. Take a look at the depth of their price guides. https://www.nia.org/publications/GIFONA_price_guide.pdf Here's an example for identifying color:

"The progression of color from the very lightest to the darkest shade is as follows: Green Tint, Ice Green, Light Green, Green, Dark Green, Deep Green, Green Blackglass." (GIFONA, p. v).

My librarian side really appreciates the community's ability to describe, organize, find and value specific insulators.

Nice score!
If you don’t need the block grinder, you could probably sell it and recoup your $80. It has the more desirable metal lamp shade.

Nice scores Guys!

CT that hewing hatchet is my favorite type. that should have a hardened inlay on the flat side of the blade and another facing the "hammer" head.

Nothing for me in the wild today. I went to a Flea but it only had 3 booths one of which was the HS kits food stand whee I took pity and overpaid for a doughnut.

Stopped by my Mom's niche where her urn rests.

Stopped at one estate sale but nothing of interest there either.

I did stop by an old school Ace adware store in an older part of that town I'd never been in and picked up a bottle of butane for refills. Those are hard to get anymore.

I forgot, I did win a bid on another vintage Everdry match case. so I have a really nice one for display and this one for using.

Rust; are your trays Plastic? It may nave been intended as a fishing tacle box.
Nope, steel. They have some removeable plastic dividers. Style # 1022-446979 It has the fixed, angled socket divider so probably not intended as tackle box. Gotta say though that at 22# empty I'd rather tote this thing full of fishing lures than wrenches and such.
Once I'm done admiring it I'll probably sell it

Flea Market season is over in my neck of the woods. I still made a trip to my favorite tool guy vendor’s home though. $35. Both AutoCut’s were new in package. Klein duct knife was gently used. Same with the 1/2” drive craftsman USA H extension set.

Not a screaming deal but the widows husband was an aircraft mechanic so I gave her a fair price for all of this. 60 klico pins and 12 klico clamps. The pins are the 4 common sizes plus 4 bags of assorted roloc discs ans abrasive polishing thingys.

I remember those licence plate tags from when I was a kid. I think the expectation was if you lost your keys they could be returned to you, or maybe for valet parking... Either way, a better age.

Sometimes you just get lucky. Late one night, I was looking for some vintage tool brands I love. I came across a Blackhawk tool chest that had been posted for sale about an hour earlier. The three photos were blurry, but the price was extremely reasonable. I emailed, texted and left messages to the Seller to confirm I wanted it, but didn’t hear back. It is an older Blackhawk Master Mechanic Wrench Chest.

I started to work on the next step, which was how the heck to get it, as it was located nowhere near me. I thought of everyone I knew nearby and finally remembered a cousin (now she has been renamed FCM as in “Favorite Cousin Mary”) who I texted because it was too late at night her time.

The next morning, I received a text that the chest was mine and how was I going to pick it up? FCM was willing to be the go-between and one of my daughters Venmo’d her the money. I massively underestimated its size or dimensions, which of course were much too heavy for her to lift. The dimensions are 27” x 13” x 11” and it weighs 67 lbs.

Somehow FCM got it to a UPS store which quoted her more than twice the purchase price to transport it to me. Then, real luck happened. She remembered that one son-in-law may be driving out here in the following 6-8 weeks for a short business trip. Of course, he’s a big strong young man who delivered it door-to-door! I can’t stop admiring it. It is in great condition, and it did come with the original key. The Blackhawk sticker says it’s a Blackhawk “Chief” Wrench Set.

I do not know what tool set came with the chest (any help appreciated). The PO did not have any Blackhawk tools to go with it, so any help/trades there is also appreciated. In any case, a little luck, divine intervention, good family, or whatever, makes for a memorable tool day.
**wow Fredknox, thats an amazing find! In good condition with original paint and badges! You **** sir. Excellent story as well.
Screen Shot 2023-11-17 at 7.07.57 PM.png Screen Shot 2023-11-17 at 7.11.11 PM.png

Ok made a mistake, the $ winner wasn't the Rifleman game it was the Guy Wire Strain Insulator or Johnny Ball (JB 50). 1 of 3 known. I just sold it on Ebay for... $3684
**well done! excellent return on investment. I love it when people who pick up items loop back around to report how they did on the open market! Keeps everyone on the lookout for the unique item most others would walk right by. Yes, you **** !**

*** Pick of a lifetime story***

This weekend I returned the town that I was born in (Corvallis Oregon) and where generations of my family had both lived and attended the local university. My great grandfather started a sand and gravel/ paving company in 1911 called Corvallis Sand and Gravel. My grandfather went on to buy the company from his dad and ran the company until it closed in 1975. When it closed my dad was still in high school and I always wanted to see the site. It still exists but most of the buildings are gone now and a new unrelated business occupies the site. One of buildings that still stands is a large wooden structure seen in the back ground , which was where the company trucks and equipment were repaired and maintained. I always dreamed of going back in time and picking that shop when the doors closed....both for sentimental reasons as well as for collector reasons.

So my dad and I went to the site and looked around. Luckily it was Saturday so there wasn't much commercial traffic for the current business so no employees asked what we were doing. We looked around the dilapidated shop which is largely in a state of disrepair as it hasn't been maintained over years and really will probably be torn down in a few years as the roof has leaked for years. There wasn't any tools or automotive related items to be had but way up on the wall was this amazing sign. I seriously couldn't believe it. If I could have fired up the old delorean and hit 88mph back in 1975, I know I would be all over this. I looked at my dad and said "I'm going to go ask if they will part with this sign" thinking there would be a no way/ no how response. I was mentally calculating what this sign is probably worth given the condition (excellent) and then thinking about what I would offer. I walked into the business office and spoke with a supervisor. I introduced my self and explained why I was in the office and my relation to the site. I asked if they would be willing to part with the sign. I explained I wanted to hang it in my garage and the high sentimental value. I showed them a picture of the sign and to my complete amazement, the guy said yes, go take it. I seriously couldn't believe it....didn't even ask for payment, just "yeah go grab it".

My dad and I hightailed it out of the office and my dad went into the shop building while I walked to my truck. With tears in my eyes I had a minute to ponder what I was actually about to do....I was going to do something I had dreamed about for years. I had to pull it together though because I had to go climb a ladder and I didn't want to splat on the ground because I couldn't see through the tears of joy. I grabbed the tools and went into the shop and shot up the ladder in record time. Luckily the roofing nails used to fasten the sign into the wood were not pounded in all the way so I was able to remove the 6 nails in a few minutes all without damaging the sign. I got the sign back to my truck and had a chance to really examine it. It has a ton of cobwebs on the edges which make it look damaged but it's not. Also it has grease flung all over if from the belt drive pulley system my dad said operated alot of the machinery in there. The sign it's self is made of masonite and measures 48"x24". I am trying to research the sign painter but maybe someone with way more google fu could help me? It looks like the guys name is Ray Hardwood or Ray Nardwood?? Also I'm in the process of cleaning the grease off the face with a plastic razor blade and then I will hang it it. I am still pinching myself for this one :)IMG_1573.jpegIMG_1577.jpegIMG_8210.jpegIMG_8211.jpeg

That's awesome! So so cool they let you have it.

I dream of finding the sign from my father's grocery store. Unfortunately his step sister's awful son stole it and used it to patch his car decades ago. :twak:

Ctuai gets a congratulations on that pick as well! :eyecrazy: Meant to post that the other day.

Ok made a mistake, the $ winner wasn't the Rifleman game it was the Guy Wire Strain Insulator or Johnny Ball (JB 50). 1 of 3 known. I just sold it on Ebay for... $3684
That is mind-boggling!! Did you actually receive a payment? The bidding numbers look like two guys left their Ebay accounts open and each had a cat walking over the number pad.

Picked up a pile of random testers for $6. Most were severely beat-up or off-brand junk, but I mostly just wanted these 3. The Greenlee GT-11 non-contact voltage tester, the Vaco TK-550 6-24v tester, and the Sperry outlet tester. Not a huge score, but it's stuff I can use for not much moolah, so I'll take it, lol

Nice work Smoke, but you know what you forgot to do?

Call your friend who lives down that way and has a boatload of stuff for you!

(Seriously, that is way cool. I am not sure where that building is though, and now I have to go look.)

Paid out. From my side it was even more confusing as it was all last second sniping. I figured I got $566 and was pretty pleased then all these numbers came rolling in when ebay sent it next update.

Okay, I went back and actually read the original post...

I'm going to have to ask Mrs. Lugz about this piece. Several years ago she made a stop at some backwoodsy place in WV, just a guy like us and the collection in his barn, that evolved into a huge insulator museum.

First off, you're just a kid! Who knew? :)
Secondly, it's very cool that sign has family history, but even if it didn't it'd be perfect for any collector!

@ctuai
I've only been half skimming this developing story. What is that little green magic ball? Seriously. I have no clue.
"What is that little green magic ball?"

I've goofed around with it and when powered up it seems to reach out and connect to the other two that are known to exist. Once connected they allow for a form of mental communication. I've only tried it once and I only get a giant eye, which seems like a lot of fuss over nothing See pic.

Copy and paste from a website about the hobby..

JB 50

Very rare "baseball" style strain, only a couple known in the hobby. Pretty much a round 3" ball, but very crudely made so dimensions are nominal. Not sure how the mold works: there is no pouring port or grind marks, and the mold lines are as all egg insulators, with two halves meeting in the middle, doesn't seem meant to slip. It's got a serious underpour, but that doesn't seem to be where the glass was added. Hmm. Aqua only.

Saturday I hit three yard sales in the neighborhood and scored tools at each. Shocking, I know. Nothing grand but I should have a few items to post when I have more time. Did score an S-K 1-1/2” polished combo at the first sale.

Then I did the drive- by at a fourth sale which was all baby stuff, so I moved on to the flea market.

It was key ring screwdriver day. One seller had the VFW Welfare Fund driver, the Plomb, and the Vaco anniversary driver. A second seller had the Powerful Pete. Not bad at $3.50 for all 4.
