2023 Garage Sale Thread

Got back last night from a 10-day cruise around the Caribbean (@Outlawmws -- This is the way I've been "camping" for a lot of years!).
It got off to a rocky start due mostly to our late arrival (thanks United...) and the deluge Miami suffered on the day of our departure. We were literally the last to board the ship and it was pouring down in buckets. The crew temporarily "misplaced" our luggage so without fresh clothes, we decided to eat in our cabin. Due to the storm's wave action, dinner took 1.5 hours to arrive (Mrs. OR was starting to chew the carpet...), the food was luke-warm and the wine was corked and tasted like bad Kool-aid. But boy did we sleep like babes with the rolling of the ship! Unfortunately, the storm battered our side of the ship to the point water infiltrated the balcony door and we woke to a half soaked carpet. Nearly everyone on our side of the ship had wet carpet so it took a couple of days for the maintenance guys to get the water sucked up and everything to dry out. After that, it was smooth sailing and we had a great time.

I thought I was more-or-less keeping up with the thread while away but I somehow missed @ctuai's Johnny Ball find and subsequent eBay windfall. (Some of Lugz's comments make a lot more sense now!) Congratulations on an astute find and a 6.022 X 1023 time increase on your investment--You ****!

***** also go out to @wtn1271 for those new tires and to @Michael_in_DE for his $18 Baby Wilton!

Hopefully, I'll find something to get me back in the game this week.

@bmwrd0: Yes, vehicle battery prices are most definitely NOT for the squeamish anymore...

I wouldn't have gone anywhere without eating, even if I had to stop on my way to the parts store. Everyone around me would have paid dearly otherwise, LOL.

At least you were able to salvage part of your day for treasure hunting!

Went to visit a location where there will be a spring auction but was told by the owner that we could go in before the sale. Unfortunately, everything I offered on was "That should really go to the auction". What a bummer because there was some pretty cool stuff. Any way, I at least came away with some oil cans that I'll probably use for trading.

For what it's worth, as I sell items I update my previous posts with what the item actually sold for. While it was fun to chalk up the Johnny Ball, the more insightful "sold for" update was the Aug 3: 23 - Stanley 45 & 55 combination plow plane cutter blades. Should one sell them individually or as a set?

Went with individually, currently 14 sold and I'm up to $337. So it turns out that if you come across a set of plow plane cutters you'll likely come out ahead in $ if sell them individually.

Oh Most definitely. If you are up to the hassle of selling, the components are worth more. Just saw a guy selling plane parts for 3-4x total what a complete plane would sell for. Breaks my heart to see people tear down good tools, but so many of us have 3/4 of a set of plane irons, or whatever tool. One guy tried to get me to break up 90% of a Yankee radio set so he could complete his.

Got some unusuals. 4 planking chain clamps, CM 3/4 HP block grinder, 75/25 welding tank, interesting chain come-along, box of four new commercial door hinges, box of heavy fishing sinkers, and a Rockwell drill press, all for less than the drill press is worth. Already have a nice block grinder, so put the one from today in the classifieds cheap. Needed another tank for TIG, so that was good. Planking clamps will become garage wall art. Chain come-a-long will go in electrolysis, and be restored to perfect working and then become wall art. The drill press will go to someone else to pay for it all. Gave me something amusing to do today, don't get many sales this time of year.

Here are a couple pics of some C-Clamp shaped chain hooks that I have never seen before. Nothing cast into the body of any of them to help identify them but there was one other kind of similar clamp in the box that has Durkee Cony City cast in. For what it's worth they were not that far from...

It doesn't compare to ctuai's Johny Ball Ebay windfall but this set of 5 Chevrolet 61-63 C10 hubcaps I bought in October eventually brought $500 plus shipping on Ebay after my buddy selling them for me and I agreed to a $500 offer. My cut was $425, since I only paid $20 for them I'm happy!

The guy who successfully bought those from you must be very happy. I can't imagine the dealers originally sold very many sets of those hubcaps. Did they look totally unused? Did the seller give you any backstory on them? Maybe a previous truck owner took them off and just put them aside.

Only one interesting sale listed on Craigslist today so we checked it out. The sale was listed as tools and supplies being sold by a retired electrical contractor. When we arrived it was obvious that he had retired due to health issues. The only item that I liked was a half gallon Swingspout for which I paid the asking price.


On the way home we spotted a sign saying “Fun Estate Sale” who’s sales we’ve experienced in the past are NEVER fun but it was the only TOO that we saw so we stopped in. My wife spotted the only worthwhile tool in the place. It was a like new Estwing small sledge, a junior version of one of my favorites. I paid double what I would have liked to pay but I liked the hammer.
