My $2 haul:

07 Dec 23a.jpg

Most tools were incredibly overpriced, but in a $3 zip-lock bag o' **** I saw the Yankee No. 2H (Pat. Pend) ratcheting driver and the Stanley and offered $1 for the pair without the ****. The magnifier (with stand and case) was the other $1.
Since they couldn't legally sell alcohol, the unopened Gordon's liter and the Chivas 50ml were free!
07 Dec 23b.jpg

In the left-behind pile was this The Craftsman Tool Co. Conneaut, Ohio 14" spring loaded self adjusting pipe wrench. Pat 870,781, 12 Nov 1907.
I picked up a 12" model in 2020 (for $5) and would have grabbed this one but the $43 price tag took the the shine off my desire.

Over the last couple days, I had a chance to stop in at a few Restores, here is what I found:
53382702021_0c74d14b26_b.jpg
Stanley Hurwood driver, Armstrong SOE, Lectrolite raised panel, two Lakeside Spintites, brace bits of distinction, pliers marked only #2, and a Stanley Yankee push drill with most of the bits. All of this set me back a little over $10

... Just realized that I forgot to put pictures of my purchase from October 10 (I posted the Williams toolbox for which I got a credit when buying the tools). Sorry for double pictures (upper and lower of layout) - wanted to make the brands more visible.
I also did not make pictures of the sockets as they were dirty and then I cleaned them and just put them in the box
The sockets included
Snap On STMM 4,5,5,10,11,12,14 (1/4 drive, deep, 6 point, model with double black line) some chrome defect
Snap On SFSM 9,11,12,14,15,16,16,18,19 (3/8 drive deep, model with touble black line)
Snap on 17mm impact
Snap On S-19
SK 46124 impact
Proto 1/2 drive 22mm, 27mm
Williams 1/2 drive 30mm
Craftsman =V= 3/8 drive 9,12,13,15,19mm
SK 8413 13 mm deep socket
SK 45124 3/8 drive 3/4
SK 45159 extension
True Craft Japan 3/8 drive 12,14,15,16,17,18,19
Craftsman -V- 44372 3/8 Phillips
Craftsman =V= 1/4 drive shallow 6 point 9,10

Snap ON 70 (3/8 finger spinner with chrome issues)
Snap On 67A 1/4 drive ratcheting adapter (after sitting for a week in ATF it works and looks like new)
Snap On A-4 1/2 to 3/8 adapter

... and few others

Sorry for lack of pictures - I will eventually post Snap On with double black line sockets in Vintage SO thread once I get the full set (slowly working on them - not buying from E=bay at this point...)

...$40

I drive an hour north to pick up a Studebaker 289 V8 engine as a future swap for the flathead 6 in my '53 Studebaker Starliner. Advertised as "running when pulled", the engine was replaced in an early 60s Champ truck for a German who bought the truck here but couldn't handle the three-on-the-tree. They put in a Buick V8 (?!) and an automatic and then shipped the car to Europe. I got the engune for $300, and it will almost triple the horsepower of the 6 cylinder that's in my Stude now.

I think that was the engine my dad swapped into a mid 50's Jeep panel wagon - I was in the 3rd grade helping as I could. I think he got his out of one where they had swapped a Caddy engine into the Studebaker. (Common swap back in the day)

The socket with the large square opening is a Chrysler ball joint socket and the OTC socket is for Ford rear axle hub nut socket 80s and 90s.

^ this is the result of Garage Sale people formulating prices from ebay "sold" listings. I went to a garage sale like that about a year ago. I had quite a pile of stuff picked out and set it on a table and said "How much do I owe you?"
The woman grabbed her cell phone and started checking ebay "sold" prices on each item and then stating a price.
I walked out before she got to the third item.

My picking has been narrowed down to finding items through trades/deals among folks here and the interwebs. I haven't been to a GS/ES or flea in a long time this year.

I came across one of my target pieces on an ebay alert from my watch list and immediately snagged it up. Blue Point Supreme S-3642 DOE. 1 1/8" x 1 5/16. It was one of 2 that I need to complete my set and is the first one I've ever seen...anywhere. Got it to my door for less than $20.

Now I only need the elusive unicorn S-4446 and my worlds will align.

I also went batty on some ratchets. I had been looking for a MAC XR8FPA to add to my collection. I saw a listing on the webz for one that was listed with a MAC XR11FPA, which I already had. Also in a separate listing from the same guy there was a MAC 1/4" SPINFLEX. I combined the 2 listings and pulled the trigger on all of it. I payed through the nose for them, but these are in exceptional condition and I was going to pay up for an XR8FPA alone if I found a good one. I was going to sell the current XR11FPA that I had, but now I've decided to keep it too. Just becuz. I also know of a pawn shop that has a red handled version in 1/2" drive, and I guess I'm gonna' have to PAY them a visit again too.

Yeah, I went to a sale in P'up a couple years ago, just killing time between meetings, and an guy tried to do that. He was way over his skis on this sale, and was scrambling to price things, of which he didn't know how. There is a reason antique dealers get involved in that end of the business; they have seen so much of this stuff, been a buyer at estate sales, and know how that world works. All of them have different methods, but it all comes down in the end to clearing out the estate. Garage sales that are family run? Whole nother ballgame. Sometimes they just want to get rid of stuff, sometimes they think they have gold.

I often check on eBay "sold" listings to get an idea of what something I might sell "might" be worth. I know that if I sell it on eBay, that they will take almost 30% of the selling price and that I will have the nuisance of packing it up, taking it to the post office, etc. , so I often figure that half of what it might sell for on eBay is a good starting point. Depends, of course, on lots more, especially condition and part of the country you are in compared to where they sold for a lot.

Beautiful car and design. We had a lot of family members owning 50's & 60's Studebaker's back in the day.

Two sales were listed on Craigslist and as usual we went to the wrong sale first. At least we found a Christmas tree stand that we will be using soon. The second sale was put on be an estate sale company that I’ve had good luck with in the past. Today was no different. There were several Machinists boxes offered but fortunately I’m all stocked up on those. Here is a picture of everything. IMG_1686.jpeg

I love those for camp stoves! I'm curious; in the thumb actuator, Camping scene or more printing?
there is a spare flint "Magazine" just behind the button - a fingernail lift to open, should be 2-3 spares in there
if you salvage the flints from a dead BIC lighter, thera re 2X longer adn stil fit.

...and so GJ'ers fifty years from now aren't trying to figure out who made it! :)

Zactly!

I think a good line for those Eprey Pricers might be "Do you think the winning bidders of those auctions are coming to this yard sale?"

A better answer is either “thank you, I will pass” or make a cash offer. You have seconds to change their minds on pricing so no reason to push them to not go your way.

^ it's not 30%. there's a discussion about it in another thread
With eBay you are dealing with a business and so you have to think about things like a business. Selling on there, you are basically paying for a table at a flea, a flea that the whole world comes to. But the bad is sometimes you will get jacked. It has happened to me a few times, and you just have to roll with it.

I was able to hit an interesting sale today, with a few good finds:
53385227296_76d8107ff6_b.jpg
Snap-on M-3, number punches in wood cylinder, drill index, Blackhawk DBE, tommy bar, SK 1/4" extension, drawer pull, Indestro Super breaker bar, Toyota lug nut wrench. All of this for $10.

After that I stopped by another sale and picked up a few books:

Thanks for the education guys, didn't mean to derail the thread. I've never sold anything online, but have bought quite a few things.

^ off-topic stuff is the nature of the beast. this is not the only website where it happens. as bmwrd0 notes: make sure your cost is covered, and make sure the rent is covered. the thread I cited above shows some numbers from other members.

And this is why I don't really worry too much about eBays fee's; I bake those into the rent aspect along with other incidentals such as printer ink, my time to pack things, etc. Am I perfect at this? Good lord no. As I was saying last week, I got over my skis in valuing some stuff. I still came out OK, but that is also baked into the rent aspect: the ability to mess up. As a high school kid, I worked as the stock boy at a clothing store, and it was there I found out that clothing is dirt cheap, but is sold at a high mark up at first, as they price into it that a lot will go on clearance as it really isn't returnable to the wholesaler in that business model. Which is unlike books, which can be sent back for credit, and so there is a much higher cost per unit from the distributer. Again, this is priced into the business model.

The big thing about eBay is, as I have said time and time again, you have to treat it as a business. Understand were your costs are, what is recoupable, and what you need to cover. It is when someone pays to flip something, and doesn't understand this that they get burned and angry.

^ thank you.

I'm not "worried" about the fees, I just don't believe they're being honest, and no matter how I crunch the numbers, I'm coming up with a much higher number than 13.5% on the piddly little nine sales I've made so far - their take was significantly higher.
Unfortunately I've been unable to get connected to anyone on their phone lines who has even a rudimentary command of the English language. (I don't speak Hindi or Urdu, sorry.)(or Spanish.)

I wonder if the difference between your fees (not 13.5%) vs DaveFR's 13.5% is due in part to the volume of sales. It isn't something I have looked into, but I do think he as sold a fair amount of things and thus might be getting a volume price?

Dunno, something to think about.

You are right, they are fairly opaque about the fee's, and I am not too surprised you cannot get someone on the phone. I have a good friend who works in Silicon Valley and that isn't a place for old-school styles of communication. I do wish there was a good, general competitor to eBay, but, until that happens, we are kind of at their mercy.

Anyway, it is early and I need to get ready for todays hunting of treasures.
