I finally made it up to the recycling place in New Hampshire that buys old catalytic converters and exchanged the ones I had replaced in my brother's and daughter's vehicles for $311. By the by, if you don't know, early 2000s F-150s have four cats that bring $200 all by themselves!

I immediately exchanged 125 of those dollars for an entire 80+ piece hubcap collection! Some of these are destined for the garage wall, but the majority will go to duplicate another yard art project I saw online (see the last picture).

Meanwhile, if anyone recognizes models and/or years (many makes are obvious), feel free to sing out!

Cochran Speednut wrench,
Nice find! I am an unabashed fan. They work magnificently and the design is still being copied by FACOM, Wera (google Joker) and others in Europe, but obsolete here for decades by major mfgrs. As an aside, Cochran is a distant relative of the site owner, and the site background features many of his patent diagrams. Lastly, you know I'm going to say it - we have a thread! :) See the Sticky Index.

I worked at a place called hubcap warehouse back in the late 80’s, those Cadillac hubcaps in the middle of the first picture were like gold back then.

In the bottom of the first two pics, I don’t know what those 3 white ones with the 4 sets of ribs are, but they’re cool. That moonish looking “R” hubcap makes me think of a Riviera, but that’s a total guess.

I discovered the Google lens feature that can search by image! The 3 white ones are, I think, Ford hubcaps from the 60s, and the moon-like hubcap with the R is a Nash Rambler cover from the 50s.

I’ve had both of these two on my Corvair camper van. IMG_7574.jpegIMG_3209.jpegIMG_9636.jpeg
The two van pictures were taken about 30 years apart.

I seem to remember in the past there were 2 categories. PICKER of the year and PICK of the year. ???
I don't think so. Believe it or not, in 2018, when I started this craziness, I had FIVE awards!! Oldest Find, Rarest Find, Best Deal ($), Best Haul (could be biggest or luckiest etc), and overall PotY. The idea was to spread the peanut butter, and yeah, celebrate some single picks, as opposed to consistent hauls. You may be thinking of that. But even I would admit it was too much and the next host reduced it to just PotY, rightfully so, I thought.

Smoke has a cool trick up his sleeve, though. I won't spoil his fun.

Old Man Roger is right: Caddy hubcaps always got serious money. And those small white Chevy truck caps.
My old man had the entire exterior of the building covered with hubcaps, but he never thought to make a tree out of them.
Very cool.

Thank, OMR and four.cycle! I'll probably eBay-evaluate all of the hubcaps, sell off the more valuable ones to pay for the whole acquisition, and then use the rest for a tree decoration next year.

When I was a kid, I got 25 cents an hour to go out with a long pole with a hook on it, pull the hubcaps down one at a time, buff them up with a can of "Turtle Wax Chrome Polish" and then hang them back up.
But you could buy a Sgt. Rock comix book and a handful of Bazooka Joe bubblegum for that wage! At the age of 10 I was on a scaffold painting the sides of our white clapboard house, burning leaf piles, and taking things apart that needed to go to the scrapyard. Can you just imagine this today, though? My kids like to joke with me now that I'm lucky they didn't report me to "DIE-fuss" (DYFS, or Division of Youth and Family Services) for some of the chores I made them do, which was mild. Our parents would've been locked up!

Hey, sgt rock was my favorite comic! I had to read all of my dad’s old comics from the 60’s but none the less! The Huns never saw sarge coming until it was too late.

^ I bought a new 10-speed bicycle at Rhodes Brothers for $52.92 (including tax) when I was 10.

funny when I think about hubcaps I remember that when they finally took all the hubcaps down (in the mid-1960s), they hauled them all in the back of a pickup to our house, and dumped them all behind the chicken house, where they promptly started rusting away. we had a miniature "chrome junk yard" in the back yard to play in.

Comic books!! When I was a kid, early to mid 1960s, the local 2nd hand/antique/junk store bought your used comics 2 for a nickle and sold them 3 for a dime. We were encouraged not to keep them long but to keep the buy/sell cycle going.

I've been out of action from knee replacement surgery for three weeks now. Last week I stopped by the local charity store and bought a cane to use during my recovery. While there, I checked out the limited tool supply. I don't check that often, since they rarely have anything that interests me, but this time there were some items worth purchasing.

Estate sale ($20): Atari 2600, 13 Games w/ manuals, 2 joysticks, 2 paddles, 1 touchpad, Atari game center case.
  • Joyfully it came with Adventure, which I played the heck out of when I was 10-11. The interesting fact about Adventure is that it was the first video game that had an easter egg, which of course I found. Didn't know it was there, didn't know what it was, and had no one to tell. Ahhh the day's when the Atari was one's best friend.

There's a burned-out house up the road from me. Recently I noticed somebody pulled the burned car out of the garage and put it up on a railroad tie. I assume to take the cats off, lol.

I added 14 more to the collection. However, I didn't check the box-- there were supposed to be 18. Amongst the cooler missing covers was an iconic Studebaker hubcap. At $60 for the lot, I'm over $5 per for 14 caps, more than I wanted to pay for an art project. I messaged the guy to see if he had the missing ones, but I'm not optimistic I'll even hear back.

Estate sale ($25): Taylor 36" No. 22 bar clamp; shot put 16lbs; SK sockets and socket driver; Craftsman 1/4" ratchet 43185; Armstrong 3/8" ratchet No. F-50; Divided box.

Wow, a cannonball, I thought. Nope, just a shot put. However given that it is the official men's olympic shot put weight, I can now say that I am only shy of 70' off the record throw.

Not a whole lot going on around here, so, as is my usual bent, I have been stopping by the Restores that are near my daily wanderings. Here is what I picked up today:
53413326891_3f91dffa7e_b.jpg
Glock tuperware container, wiring block, Williams and Chrome Vanadium (Duro) sockets, SS wire, and, best of all, a small mill vise, something I have been looking for. All that for 12 or so.

It's officially winter, -1*C, and really starting to get into the serious pickers' season at the flea market now, when you don't have to walk as far, because all the sellers are grouped up, and there's little to no beanie babies and household bric-a-brac.

Today's visit (Lugz 2023_44) yielded:

2023_44.jpg

- a couple wartime MOPAR manuals
- a Crowntop era drill index
- pliers from Fairmount, PENENS, and England (T. Williams)
- unknown tappet wrench
- early pressed steel Hinsdale DOE wrench
- GAMM MFG nested screwdriver(s) catnip
- Light switch plate (late stocking stuffer for my son, the chess and poker player extraordinaire)
