It all depends on the pricing 😉. If sockets are .25 and wrenches are $1, no way am I pulling out my list and going through it. I just buy them, put them in my bucket and then clean and sort when I get home. That way I can take my sweet time comparing tools and keep the nicer ones!

Pricing is definitly a factor! My "average tool cost" for hand tool keepers hovers at just over $2 (not counting power tools and boxes), and does not include the following (not yet in the inventory:

Antique Hand Tools
Screwdrivers
Files
Punches and Chisels
Drills, Hole Saws, GL punches
Taps and Dies
Engine building tools (Specials)
Specialty tools
Soldering tools
Planes
Hand Saws - Wood
Hand Saws Metal

Ahh, stress: When you send a 1930's set cross country and the buyer sends you this pic: holey.jpg
Good news was the contents arrived safely and intact.

Wow, that would be tough to replace.

Reminds me of a similar situation (I was the buyer). Bought a new item via ebay, never arrived. I contacted the seller, he told me to wait it out. After several weeks of denial, the tracker still showed it stuck in the same place, and the shipper (USPS, IIRC) had no answers. So, he eventually sent a replacement, got an insurance claim from the shipper, and life moved on.

About a year and a half later, I received a box that looked worse than yours. Sure enough, it was the missing items. A YEAR AND A HALF LATER!!!

This could probably be a topic for its own thread...

That is why I always attach the contents securely to a piece of heavy cardboard or something (I've even used plywood) before padding it heavily enough to fill the space within the box and use filament tape all over the outside. I also reinforce the corners, since that is the point where impact is most likely to cause damage.

A good packaging job is time consuming and, unless you are recycling padding and stiffener material, more costly. It usually doesn't make a difference in shipping cost if you can keep it from getting into the next step up the price scale.

I had that happen too. Tracking showed a box of very uncommon hand drills and bit braces stuck at a USPS center, and the seller messed around until the post office wouldn't pay on insurance or even admit the problem--partly my fault for not stopping at the post office more often, but I was out of state for awhile. Ended up never getting anything and the seller on eBay seemed to disappear. All around a total mess, and I was out money and the tools.

I had a compound bow sent from an Eprey buy. Both limb ends were hanging outsid the so-called packaging by the time it arrived. One of the worst pack jobs I can recall receiving - again I was lucky it arrived undamadged.

@WisJim I don't understand how that could be spun as your fault, even if it was at your local post office, they should have returned it to sender after enough time.

Mike, it was at one of the intermediate postal centers, and they apparently found part of the shipping label. No one answers the phone at the local post office and I got a run-around when trying other means of contact.

Most definitely can't be construed as your fault, IMHO.

Picked up a few items this morning. Excuse the non-tool mixed in.
The Gold filled bifocal eyeglasses made me laugh. I can remember a time when this was a common phrase. Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat Doctor, how long has it been since that was a specialist category?
Three nice tin boxes. A small knife with no makers mark but well made with leather handle cover.tlsE.JPGggE.JPGgfeyeE.JPG
The long pliers with the curve attached have me puzzled. Some kind of puller/bender I would guess.

FWIW, I remember "Ear, Nose & Throat" from the 70s, but our eye doctor was separate.

Contents were all vacuum bagged ,tightly. Larger piece was wrapped in paper and shrink-wrapped. The entire box was wrapped with packing tape. The contents were not going to fall out, but the right pair of hands could have likely pulled out some of the content through the pictured hole. Very often I find myself building plywood boxes/reinforcements inside flat rate boxes. I didn't this time due to severe cold making my shop very uncomfortable this time of year, and its a total mess.
No pic of the contents...For Shame!!!
Been sitting on my FBM page for months ,finally sold.

A decent day, despite the weather, mostly due to estate sales - 3 for 3 and all three produced! Not a TOO to be seen.

ES #1 and $10 all - 6" Cincinati butterfly C Clamp, Champion DeArment 420 Channelocks, (#18!) w/patent No's, CL Needle nose, Brass from a trophy shop - no marks, Blue agate for my oldest daughter, SO file handle and 5/8 combo, Craftsman 9/16 combo with the "ratcheting" OE, Electrolite DBE, an old Ice pick (4 digit Phone No.) and a cheap hand vise (probably for my daughter.

ES1a Clamp CL Br agateAO CM Elect Ice pic Hand vise.jpg

ES1 also had this Blow up:

ES1b Pumpkin.jpg

ES#2 Another old Ice Pick - remnants of "Coca Cola" and "in Bottles" on it, and a Blackhawk Portapower, operational, and I'm guessing 1-1/2 ton? (marks are near gone; maybe after cleanup of the "garage Gunge".

ES2a BlackHawk Port-a-Power.jpg

Same Sale 1500 lb, Beebe Bros, (Seattle) Chainfall, Not sure I'm keen on 3/16" chain holding 1500 # though!

$15 all in here.

ES2a Coke Ice pic Beebe Bros Chain fall 1500.jpg

And the last stop: Second and last day so 1/2 off, Only spent $8.

Finger jointed box - needs a sliding lid - , 4 flat bars, "India" sharpening Stone, a Duro Chrome Ignition wrench, and a Steel Stamp for "McC".

ES3a Box, Bars S Stone Duro Stanp.jpg

Steel ring reinforced mallet, 2 wood handled drivers -Small one is I believe a Yankee #95, 2 awls, one is a clamping handle, a painters knife, odd glass cutter (I liked the wood grip) and a bamboo ink "Pen" for calligraphy?

ES3b Mallet deivers Awl holder awl Pnt knife G cutter BB pen.jpg

Weather beaten bass. I'm thinking I'l use some lemon oil on it clean it lightly adn cal it good.

And possibly my favorite of the day find was the Spintight stand. It cane empty, but I already had the wood handled Spintites, so more that enough to fill it - not sure what sizes are proper... I've been wantng a stand for these for ages!

I'll strip most of the white paint off with SG, I'l need to work on the decal very carefully!

Not much yards sales this time of year. Got these 3 this morning for $5. The proto on the right should clean up nice, mech is smooth. The ratchet on the left is a no name, but the mech was too well made and smooth to pass up. I thought the Blackhawk in the middle was a torque multiplier. Surprised when I found out what it is. I'll be using it at work alot.

Loving the Spintite stand!
Thx OR!

I got a little more info on the glass cutter: The cutter has SHARRATT & NEWTH LONDON, and found an ad from 1919 for SHARRATT & NEWTH - 43-44 PERCIVAL ST., LONDON. Other indicators say they go back to at least 1862? (1862 London Exhibition)

This one does not use a wheel like we see today, but and embedded diamond. The head has the ability to swing a few degrees, I ran it against a glass bottle from recycleing, and sure enough, it scribes a heck of a line! The handle is rosewood and that was most of what made me pick it up. I'm very surprised it was still there second day.

The ice pick with the 4 digit Phone number had a company name that I believe is "Mountain Water Ice company" ("Mountain" was half obliterated) and that may have been in San Bernadino? Not sure yet. it also had an address of 116 E st. but that ahs many posible connections, but the ones near me are residential streets.

and yeah.. gracesguide.uk has some print ads from 1862 for that Sharratt & Newth outfit, but I'm guessing they're probably older than that if they were exhibiting stuff in London in 1862... that gig was a huge deal

Andy, I gotta say, you have been on a friggin' roll this year. I've always known you were a machinists' chest guy (serious question, how many is that in your possession now?), but I never thought of you as a tools guy. You have been bringing them home in droves, and unless I'm mistaken, with fairly wide diversity, too. Are you stocking yourself, family & friends, flipping or putting keeper sets together?

If I've counted correctly this would be #13. I gotta say this Kennedy ,without a front panel, weighed in at 82.5 lbs when I brought it in the house. I had concerns the handle might break away. I've got it mostly empty and it still weighs a significant amount. Tomorrow I will put it back on the scale.
Most everything I buy it destined to be a flip, a set or two to a co-worker in need, possibly help out some of the apprentice carpenters and millwrights here in Detroit(as of yet none have come forward with any of the items I've offered up,free or very low cost, on our Union FB page) .They'd rather use a speed square than a combination square that would last another 100 years.
My garage is full, my obsession isn't. I still have to feed it. It seemed like I was few and far between on buys until recently and it's came in droves.
I made mention in another thread ,it is likely I will not return to a former(long-time) employer as the display work/tradeshow/autoshow market has changed significantly since COVID. I have sought, and obtained work in a different facet of carpentry, now doing commercial office interiors. Which at age 55 I'm still buying different tools/methods/practices to assist in the day to day. Thankfully my former employer is gracious enough to allow me to store my 68" Harbor Freight in their warehouse. I suspect as the weather gets warmer ,I will be making an effort to get that box home, placed into my garage. Which ,long winded I know, leads to my 35-40 years of buying tools and the work box,and the home boxes have serious amounts of duplication, so there lies another huge amount of tooling to go through. The garage sale would be legendary. Hell, I might even expect Rickster to drop by on a early morning ,it's only about 9 hours from Eastern PA.

I miss the auto show. I made 65k at the auto show the Superbowl year between October and the NFL Experience.

The auto show was the best job of the year.

Outlaw,
I have every reason to believe that my Spintite stand has its original nutdrivers. I just ran down to the basement to check the sizes. They are 1/2”, 7/16”, 3/8”, 11/32”, 5/16”, 1/4” and 3/16”. Some are a little hard to read so I got out my magnifiers.

Yes it was for many ,many years. I worked it from another angle building everything in a shop and then sending it to Cobo Hall. Our O.T. began long before November and ended in March. Pre-COVID the industry began changing, smaller ,quicker set-ups and many in our trade(carpenters) were warned the writing was on the wall that the $30-50K in 3 months Cobo Hobo wasn't going to be around much longer. That train was leaving town. Now they have 2 weeks of set-up. Many are frustrated, angry, sad because they don't put buildings together with wingnuts and windex.

We braved the rain to check out a little estate sale in Richmond, CA. The selection of tools was minimal but we came home with these. A rawhide mallet, Wiss tin snips, a Powr-Kraft wood chisel and a nesting screwdriver hammer.

Thx Don! I'll see what I have in those sizes tomorrow, (likely most) but I may purposely select sizes I use a lot. This will become my "Indoor bench set" -Or maybe I'll make an "extensfion rack" - looks pretty simple!

A decent day, despite the weather, mostly due to estate sales - 3 for 3 and all three produced! Not a TOO to be seen.

Same Sale 1500 lb, Beebe Bros, (Seattle) Chainfall, Not sure I'm keen on 3/16" chain holding 1500 # though!

$15 all in here.

I'm always a little nervous about hoisting heavy things with a tool that has "fall" in its name

I love true chain falls, this one is more of a chain come-a-long... But its light so likely to become part of my camp/hunting gear.

This seemed to be the weekend for books.
This was one of the first weekends I was able to get out to some tool featuring sales, as my wife had drug me to the coast the last couple weekends (it was my birthday, and she seemed to think that was a big deal. There is nothing big or great about turning 52.)

So, on Friday, I was able to get out and hit two sales before I got caught in freezing rain at the dog park. The first was exceptionally good:

It was the estate sale of a man (he was married, but I didn't bother with the house) who restored vintage Fords. specifically A's. So, I found three Model A service manual repops, a book on steam engines, vintage model A brake lining in a cool box, Stanley and Yankee drivers, two Cadillac wrenches (!), and a Craftsman keyway cutter,

Next was another estate sale (after two sales that had nothing of interest) which yielded a Snap-on speeder, two Proto impact sockets, Yankee hand drill, small Penen's wrenches, CS Osborn tack hammer, Mustang ratchet, and a Texaco home oil bottle.

Today, Saturday, I hit another good sale:

Another hoarders house with lots to look at, but not too much I wanted to bring home. War Dept. Machinist manual from Nov. 1941(!), Air Gun Digest from '77, Principles of Wookwork from 1930, Electric Railways and Machine Shop Work from 1907, and a marked Union Tool wooden drill index.

Next two stops were busts, so I went back to the Ford restorers sale from the day before

here I found even more paper! A KR Wison catalog from '26 (reprint), Simplex/Servicycle manuals, Craftsman Atlas lathe manual, Pacific Machine catalog, Chanslor Lyon Automotive catalog from '21, put-together hex socket set and (left on from seat of my truck) Mac and Blue Point wrenches, and Plomb WF extension. All of that was $3 as they were looking to get rid of everything at that point. One exciting thing happened while I was there, a 4'x8' sheet of 1" steel plate that no one had noticed leaning against a wall was accidentally pulled down, crashing into someone and catching another persons hand and forearm underneath. So, look out at these sales!

Well, after all of that I was still early for meeting a friend for beers, so I swung by the local Restore, and picked up the following:

A wooden handled multitool with bits, and a Mossberg ratchet. I paid as much for those two as for everything else I bought, and they were still cheap.

Jeez! That's 1300 pounds of steel. That would squash you like a bug. Did they send for an ambulance?

Not much this morning (Lugz 2023_05).

- Tom Bombadil's salt shaker.
- The irresistable tobacco can, just because of the old joke, and they're good for keeping small bits in just like our father's did.
- A bound edition of "Miggles" (1899), the classic short story by Bret Harte, way before he became a WWF champion.
- BELL SYSTEM E pliers and knife sheath.
- And kitchen shears with two different bottle cap openers.
