the "key" spline socket for the lug nuts on my tahoe needs a 20mm to drive it and i think the heads of the drive screws on a coil spring compressor, but i could be wrong about that one, havent used it in awhile. On a plus side, i didnt realize i must have atleast 4 prestine 20mm sockets

the odd fuel filter is about all anyone will use one for.

I've always thought it was a little odd that the 20mm was almost never used, but you
can find loads of examples of uses for 19mm and 21mm.

20mm? Let's talk about 23mm...evil.

I've used my 23mm more than my 20mm. Track rod lock nuts or something else on suspensions. And 28mm for Jeep ball joints and Mazda 6 ball joints.

Hmm maybe because 19mm is 3/4" and 21mm is 13/16"? Many of the common metric/DIN sizes are in line with imperial sizes.

And yet no mention of 18mm. 19 and 17 are very popular yet I've only needed 18 once and had to go out and purchase an 18mm wrench as the set from 8-19 did not include it.

18 and 20 mm = Weatherhead fittings on Euro equipment. I think the 18s are pretty common on Asian cars, too?

18mm is common for sway bar links on gm cars. Also tie rod nots on lots of cars. 20mm socket is rare. Use my 20mm wrench more often for fuel filters. But sockets maybe used em a handfull of times. Not many. Ive used every other size from 4mm up to 36mm.

When I was in my Japanese sport bike phase, I seem to recall using a 20mm on more than one occasion.

some perkins diesel engines have 4 20mm headed bolts that are essentially bushing nuts that hold down the valve cover. They screw onto a 8 or 10mm stud. Dont ask me why.

16mm is probably my rare one in the bunch.

An oil drain plug on a regular mazda 3 is 23mm...all of the different socket sets I have (which most people would find excessive) did not contain a 23mm socket.

You need a M13 tap to go along with your 20mm socket just in case it breaks.

Never seen an 18mm on an Asian car that I recall, but they're EVERYWHERE on newer Ford, GM and at least Jeep if not all Chryslers.

I can't remember ever needing a 20mm socket, just a wrench for fuel filters. Can't say I've ever needed a 23mm or 28mm either, but by that point I'll either go a size up to the 24mm and 29mm I do have, or just use the SAE equivalent.

Don't recall ever using that size but with redundant stuff my mind is kind of meh. Sure it exists on something...truck drivetrains (pickup trucks) maybe. Check the caliper mounting bracket bolts. Might show up there.

It is 17mm, just did it last week. MT drain/fill plugs may be that large though just from a casual glance.

I *think* the oil drain plug on my 2012 F150 EcoBoost is 18mm. Its been a few months since the last oil change so I'm a little unsure. I think I also used my 18mm combo wrench at least a couple of times when I was swapping out the Dana 35 on my TJ.

I use 16/18 mm all the time on our European built forklifts. I've used my 11 mm 6pt once. Had to borrow an 11 mm 12 pt. once for a VW crank sensor.

Snap-On even have 19.5mm and 21.5mm sockets for this application.

Funny you guys mentioned the 18mm and the 20mm sockets. A buddy of mine stopped over a few months ago and asked if he could borrow my 18mm and 20mm sockets. We went out to the garage to get them and it turns out I didn't have either size, but I do have a 17mm, a 19mm, a 21mm etc. I have no idea why I don't have the 18mm or the 20mm. Apparently they didn't come with the set I bought, not sure why, they just didn't, and for reasons I don't understand it never dawned on me that I didn't have those sizes.

Anyway, I went out and bought the 18mm and 20mm 6 point sockets just so I would have them on hand in case I needed them and they are sitting here right by my computer. My buddy didn't come back to borrow them so I guess he must have bought his own sockets. I guess I should take them out to the garage and put them someplace close by my metric sockets, not sure why I haven't done that yet either.

23mm socket fits the drain/fill plugs on some New Holland tractors. As mentioned 18mm is quite common on John Deere equipment. Now WTH uses 11mm?

Well now there's hope I'll use that MAC 18mm wrench I bought new 23 years ago! Still has the $2.15 price tag on it.

18mm is very common on gm and euro vehicles
Where I have never seen an 18 on Asian vehicles they use 17 and 19

Now a 20mm socket I have only used on lug nuts that are 21mm/13/16 with the chrome cap that came off where 20mm fits just right

Now I use the 20mm open end flare nut wrench for gm fuel filters and chrysler hydraulic system lines.

Now what about the infamous 26mm I have never used them except maybe as a quick driver for spark plug tube seals on valve covers

I was once told that 16mm & 18mm are the new 17mm & 19mm

For allot of European cars this seems to be the case.

15mm is one I discovered I don't ever use. I was changing out a unit bearing on a friend's Chevy and I went to grab a 15mm wrench and found out I didn't have one in a my standard box end wrench set, but I happened to have one in my Proto ratcheting wrench set.
