This may be a dumb question but I'm asking anyway.

I have a 20V Lithium Ion Dewalt impact/drill combo set it came with 1.5 AH batteries. I lost a battery (long story) and was planning on getting a replacement set. I also plan to get the high torque 1/2" impact gun. http://www.dewalt.com/tools/cordless-impact-driverswrenches-high-torque-wrenches-dcf889hl2.aspx

I noticed that comes with a 3 Ah battery. does the larger Ah just mean it lasts longer? or does it actually produce more power? Obviously I'm not very knowledgable about electronics or what exactly all the different abbreviations mean.

As others said, just longer run time, most likely. The 4 AH cells are likely newer tech and if high quality, that could be an extra 0.02 volts. Likely unnoticeable for tool applications, though.

You can switch from all different amp hour packs. Id atleast buy the 4.0 packs or maybe even the new 5.0. Only thing about the bigger packs is they are heavier.

If you can afford it, step up to the 36 volt impact wrench.---I couldn't afford it but got all implements in 36 volt anyway, no regrets.---All use the same battery so I can keep two or three batteries charged all the time.---I have as yet to find an car or pick-up lug-nut that it won't break loose.---Haven't tried it on semis yet.---Hammer drill lasts twice as long as my 24 volt drill---7 1/4'' skill saw with carbon tipped blade will cut anything my corded will and never bog, and you can take it any where void of a power source.

There is pics of a prototype brushless dewalt impact floating around the net... I'm waiting to add that my lineup when ever it's released... But if I were you I'd have a look at Amazon for some 4ah batteries

IMO if you can pick up the impact with 3.0 Ah batteries for a great price, that will be an upgrade to the 1.5 batteries mostly for increased run time. Small increases in power claims may not be noticed. Depending upon which marketing genius is at play for example, Milwaukee claims more power:

M18 REDLITHIUM™ XC4.0
Upgrade. Outwork. Outlast.
Milwaukee’s M18™ REDLITHIUM™ XC4.0 provides up to 2X more run-time, 20% more power and 2X more recharges than a standard Lithium-Ion battery.

Moving from 18V NiCad to 18V Lithium in the same power tool, I did notice a difference in power/torque delivery, the old power tool was rejuvenated.
