We moved to the Texas hill country from western Texas. Found a house with 3 acres in the country, and low restrictions in the neighborhood. Since I had 10 cars, I was ready to build a 40x60 like I had before. But, isn't it amazing how quickly a budget can go away, vanishing in to thin air? So, this land had a 20x20 storage building, and a 16x16 concrete slab. I decided to build a garden shed on the 16x16 and convert the 20x20, and that lead me here. Reading, looking, and learning, I have started on my conversion.

I am doing this with a really tight budget, about $1000. The structure was there with half of the attic built and with 3 windows. I want to put down some race deck flooring, and will as soon as I can gather the funds. I finished out the ceiling/attic floor, and insulated all the walls. I added an A/C to help cool it down a bit.

I build/restore Buick muscle cars, and build quadrajet carburetors for people, so I am adding one 9' garage door for a car, and the rest will be workbench, equipment, tools etc.

The outside will stay mostly the same, but I will have to take out the two swinging doors and add the garage door. Also, will have to add some concrete or a ramp up to drive a car in.

Inside was a huge mess, and I have always had a messy work area and always hated it, so I am throwing stuff away, giving stuff away, and I am going to clean this thing up!!!

More of the inside before I started.

I hauled outside everything I could, and put everything else in the middle for now. I insulated the walls after adding an A/C to cool it down some.

I got a quote for drywall, that is something I can't do myself, and quotes were between $2000 and $3500. So, no thank you. I bought some 1/4" sublayer wood panel sanded, and put it up on the walls. I also put sheets of pegboard up on the back wall to hold some things.

I am working on the cabinets over the workbench now, and retopping the work area. Will also add the garage door. I am hoping to finish most of this over the weekend. I work during the day, so building this, my cars, and the quadrajet business are nights and weekends only sort of thing.

This looks like a great space to remod. I like the style of the building and the fact the walls were unfinished. This gives you the ability to wire and insulate properly. The size looks good and I like the framing. It is going well as you have done quite a bit so far. You can install a garage door without too much trouble. It looks good to me!!! I will be interested in the finished product.

Best Regards

If you ever do DW it, leave the 1/4 in place. It can hold small screws/light loads as a sub base to the DW, and if you use butterfly anchors it offers even more holding power.

Thanks y'all. Yes, it is tough to go from the 40x60 to this, but I started purging stuff away. I had some sales, and gave a bunch of stuff away, and then threw stuff away. And I still am getting rid of stuff I just don't use much any more.

Got some cabinets up today, and started putting some things in place.
