20x24 garage costs?

hey i just joined tonight. you guys really have some awesome diggs. im 22 and bought my first house 1 1/2 years ago. i finally finished remodeling the house, so now its time for the important things. i just ordered some blueprints for a 20x24 saltbox style garage. i was wondering what some of you have built detached garages of this size for. my budget is $10,000 but i was just flipping through the gallery and saw an insanely nice garage that they said they built for 5-6k. ill be doing all the work myself with the exception of the electric and water. i was also wondering if anyone has build a garage from Behm design blueprints. i just ordered mine yesterday so im still waiting to see them. thanks

Well, my 20x24 cost $96,000 8.5 years ago, but it had a house and 1.5 acres of land attached.

You're looking at $20.84 per sq/ft, that might be kinda tough using standard framing construction. I have no idea what a "saltbox style" garage is, probably a term relative to your region of the country.

I will say that the 20' dimension is pretty tight, the extra 4' makes it really nice. I have a buddy with a 24x30 and that's the smallest 2 car shop I'd suggest if you have the room. Room on the sides and room to work at the bench up front with both cars in. He's even had a old MG parked sideways up front before for a total of 3 cars.

I agree. My current garage is 20x24, and it's not nearly enough for 2 vehicles, not including all the other **** that gets dumped there...
I'd consider 24x24 a bare minimum for 2 cars and a workbench or shelves.
If you go to Menards website, they have prices on some pre-priced garage packages (or pole barns if you want that route). If you need a rat wall/foundation, figure the concrete will cost you at least $2500. Then you'll need electrical... The list is endless.

yeah i really want to go bigger but my house is so small i dont want to overwhelm it. i also dont have to much land. the garage is only for a couple of years. i plan on moving in about 3 years. a salt box is where one of the roof lines is longer than the other. the one wall will be 12 ft high and the other will be 8 ft high. its the best way i can build to accomodate a lift.

I am currently building a 24 x 24 attached garage and will have about 10k in materials including: lumber, trusses, minor plumbing, electrical, finishes ( inc drywall ) and concrete. I'm doing it pole building style to save on foundation costs. The labor is all me so $15000 to $20000 would be ballpark if I had someone else building it.

Cost is all relative to location, even if you are doing it yourself. My 24x26 detached garage cost me more than $20k to have someone else build.

If you're certain you will move in three years, building a garage may not make financial sense. Check with local real estate agents to learn if the garage will add enough value to the house to cover the cost of building the garage. You might be better to rent a shop for three years, or maybe move up your timetable and move sooner.

I concur, you don't want to lose money in this.
