Hello,

I just bought a table saw and it's currently set up for 220v. per below:

  • Motor: 2 HP, 220V, single-phase, prewired to 220V
  • Amps: 1 8A at 220V

The cable that comes on it is 6-20 for 220V. I would like to switch it to something with a twist lock feature (NEMA L6-20), AND I need to make a 25 foot extension cord with the same connectors.

My hope is to standardize across my woodworking shop to a single plug, and I like the option to have the twist lock.

  • IF you were starting over, which 250-300v capable plug would you use to standardize? I want something that locks
  • Can I use 12/3 for this table saw and extension cord, or do I need to use 10/3 wire? I was also considering just buying this
  • The circuit this will be on is a dedicated high voltage circuit with a double 20 amp breaker (see below pic)
  • Why would you choose instead of L6? Is one more common (ie at Home Depot)

L6-20 seems reasonable and if you are keeping that extension cord <50' 12/3 SOOW or SJOOW is good.

Shop eBay for your electrical supplies.

+1 on the 6-20.

12/3 cordage should work. Remember that with cordage the ground conductor is counted where as with building wire such as NM-b its not.

Some one will be by shortly to tell you why this is wrong, but if you are going to standardise on a plug, I suggest a 30 amp plug. Put in the the 10 ga wire now and sleep in peace forever. One can get a great deal on 3 PH equipment, the 30 amp will be helpful in future to run the rotary converter etc.
